Eating Fiber Helps Cut Belly Fat

Nobody likes belly fat. It's probably the biggest reason people keep eating right and exercising.

Comedian Kevin James has a great line about it: "I just want to lose enough weight so my stomach doesn't jiggle when I brush my teeth."

It's the truth! And keeping that belly away could be as easy as eating more fiber.

You can't digest dietary fiber, which is found in plant foods, but it helps with digestion by absorbing water, and easing defecation.

And a new report, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, suggests eating more fiber may help reduce abdominal fat.

Among participants, 85 overweight boys and girls, ages 11 to 17, children who ate less fiber had 21% more belly fat, compared to kids consuming more fiber, who reduced abdominal fat by 4%.

Experts recommend young people eat about 30 grams of fiber each day.

Getting fiber is easy, just don't get swept up by all the "multi-grain" or "whole wheat" babble on packages. Try eating fruits and vegetables. Duh!

Fiber is filling and satiating so you end up eating less.

Big surprise.

This is a bit misleading. I doubt simply taking a fiber supplement will significantly impact your weight. The reason eating more fiber is slimming is because it fills you up and tends to come from lower-calorie foods. Obviously, if you snack on a fiber-rich apple instead of a twinkie, it will have an impact on your waist ... And I bet you will see just as much of an impact if you peel the fiber-rich skin off the apple and eat it that way.

I agree plus you "poop" more with more fiber.. as long as you up your water intake too! More fiber & no water intake .. not a good thing! :-) But yes, Ann, so true!

If I didn't eat a high-fiber diet, I'd be the size of a house. The fiber helps to fill me up so I'm not starving between meals and it helps move everything along down there. If you're overweight, the best thing you can do is to start incorporating more fiber into your diet. It gives you pretty quick results and it's an easy lifestyle choice that's sustainable long-term.

People make it seem like adding fiber to their diet is difficult or taking a pill. It's not. I make sure I'm eating my fruits & veggies and at least one cup of beans a day. Sometimes my lunch is just a cup of beans. It is very satisfying! I call it my bean diet. I have never felt better. Oh and beans are cheap too.
