Obesity Liver Damage Worse Than Alcohol?

When you hear the words "cirrhosis of the liver", you probably think of alcohol as the cause. Most of us are aware of the link between obesity and diabetes, high blood pressure and stroke - but we don't realize how much damage excess weight can do to our livers.
Professor Christopher Hawkey, President of the British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG), told the UK's Guardian newspaper that:
[Obesity] is now projected to overtake alcohol as the biggest cause of liver cirrhosis within two decades.
Cirrhosis is an advanced, irreversible, form of liver damage: obesity is already the main culprit responsible for less serious forms of liver disease.
Some statistics from the BSG:
- Liver disease is the fifth most common cause of death in the UK
- The average age of death from liver disease is 59
- The main causes of liver disease are alcohol, viral hepatitis and obesity
The rise in obesity needs to be increasingly tackled on a national level - or our health services are going to be struggling more and more with the need to care for seriously ill, obese, patients.
That's not an excuse, however, for us to give up on our individual efforts! If you've got excess weight to lose, why not try Diet Blog Share for support and inspiration?
Those fries look really good.
ReplyYeah and they taste good too.
ReplyI think a lot of people think that only alcoholics get liver disease, but when you're obese, your body stores fat in your liver and it's definitely bad news. Think about how they make foie gras...they force feed ducks until they're super fat so their livers get nice and fatty.
ReplyTrue!
I am actually reading a book about this right now & was written by a high protein couple.. & also say saturated fat is fine.. I am just into it so I have not got to the meat of the book. I will be reviewing it on my site with a giveaway this month. It interested me as I am not a low carb person (I am more 40-30-30) & I have always thought of saturated fat as evil SO I am taking it as a way to learn another view on things...
ReplyI "always thought saturated fat was evil" until I started reading books like the one you are reading! 'Protein Power,' and 'Good Calories, Bad Calories.' I recommend you open your mind. What's evil are the man-made fats that are truly poisonous ... we should not get getting our fat from corn and soy, we should get it from natural forms like meat (and possibly dairy). It's the carbohydrate that spikes our insulin and tells our body it's time to store much of the fat we eat.
ReplyI drink whole milk now with all that evil saturated fat in it and never felt better!
ReplyI've skipped whole milk and gone straight to half-n-half and whipping cream. YUM. Also, have never felt better. Bring on the sat fat!
ReplyI think I know what book you're talking about...6-week Cure for the Middle-Aged Middle...? They're low-carb proponents, authors of Protein Power, and I remember them talking about Fatty Liver disease in the book. It's interesting stuff.
ReplyYes, that is the book. I just got back here so sorry for the delay in response. If you are interested in the giveaway, it will be Nov. 16th on my blog.
And TonyK.. thx!
I ma not a fan of the food on this diet so.... My prob was always sweets, not the meat, heavy cream, butter, bacon & that stuff. I don't even like that stuff so for me to live long term on this plan would be hard... BUT it is interesting to read about it for sure!
ReplyHow satfats affect your body is context dependent. I wouldn't recommend a lot of Satfats to a sedentary, overweight person with a stressful job who doesn't eat a lot of fruit and veggies. For fit, active hardbods (like Jody!), satfats can be beneficial.
Replyactually fatty liver is common in overweight/obese AND thinner people but in most cases does not cause serious problems.
ReplyHow is it common in thin people unless they are alcoholics?
ReplyHah, aren't those the fries that never manage to decompose? I think the dude from Super Size me did a test on them once.
They looked the same for like 2 months or some sh*t. Now that's messed up.
ReplyLOL, yeah.. We've all had fries that we've dropped in the car... only to have our cute little puppy dig up a few months later deep underneath our seats. They're just as fresh as when they were delivered in the drive-through window.
ReplyThat's seriously messed up stuff. Real food gets spoiled fast! That proves bacteria wants no part of McDonald's fries!
ReplyHow do you make foie gras? Stuff a duck full of corn. How do you make human fatty liver? Corn and other starches. The writing is on the wall, our low fat ways are making us very, very sick.
