The 5 Most Disgusting Foods. Ever.

PIZZATHEHUTT.JPG
YouTube: Simotubbo
There are some real gross foods out there. And most, you'll find at the local supermarket, like greasy bacon, trans-fat packed cookies with a 10 year shelf-life and chemically engineered diet sodas. But, it could be worse, a lot worse!

So, the next time you're mad at your stomach and want to teach it lesson. Give it a hearty helping of cow entrails with a side of maggot cheese and then, wash it down with a hot steaming cup of poop coffee. Seriously.

Scorpion Kebab

SCORPIONKEBAB.JPG

Somewhere lurking in a Beijing night market is the scorpion kebab. This treacherous snack is crisp on the outside and smooth in the middle and as this street vendor says, "Healthy, delicious!"

Now, despite their menacing appearance, most scorpions are timid. Even their stinger is usually harmless to humans. But it'd still be awful to get it caught in your teeth. Eek!

Durian Fruit

DURIAN.JPG

It's hard to imagine a fruit, which smells like a rotting corpse, is considered as the king of all fruits. Durian fruit, native to Southeast Asia, has actually been banned in some hotels and public transportation because its reeks.

However, inside its thick thorny husk is a yellowish custard-like flesh that tastes a lot like almonds. Yeah, rotting flesh almonds.

Casu Marzu Cheese

CASUMARZU.JPG

Maggots in your food is bad! But not if you're eating Casu Marzu, sheep's milk cheese infested with insect larva. Found mainly in Sardinia, Italy, some say it tastes like soap. You eat it by smearing it on bread, maggots and all.

Casu Marzu, also called maggot cheese, has been outlawed, because it becomes toxic when all the maggots die off. Now it's sold on the black market.

Tripe Meat

TRIPE.JPG

It looks like a dingy dish towel and smells like stale urine. So, let's eat it! Tripe is a type of offal, the entrails and organs of butchered animals. Very popular in Italy, beef tripe is made from the first three chambers of a cow's stomach.

And here's the kicker. Typically, tripe, guts and other undesirables are used to make dog food, not people food. The stink means it's unfit for human consumption.

Kopi Luwak Coffee

KOPILUWACK.JPG

Kopi Luwak or civet coffee is made by brewing the undigested coffee beans in the crap of the Asian Palm Civet, a weasel-like mammal. The civet's stomach enzymes break down proteins in the beans giving the coffee a less bitter taste.

And even though the coffee is made from feces-beans, a single cup of Kopi Luwak can cost as much as $50. Now, if you'll excuse me. I have to go vomit. Bleh!

The scorpion kebab doesn't surprise me since the Chinese eat A LOT of things. I'm Chinese btw...but haven't eaten any insects or weird animal before (think dog meat)

Durian is an acquired taste, either you love it or hate it (I love it). I come from Malaysia, which is part of South East Asia and durians is a local seasonal fruit here. MOST foreigners (western or other asians) can't stand the smell, as it is too strong and pungent. That's the main reason it's being banned from hotels and other establishments where tourists frequent, not because it's deemed ghastly or unhealthy. I call it nature's custard!

About the cheese, saw it in a food documentary once, still can't believe that people can eat something with maggots in it.

Tripe is also used in certain chinese dishes, but rarely.

Civet coffee is one the most (if not, the MOST) expensive coffee in the world I believe. It's mind-boggling sometimes to think someone would pay so much to drink something that is brewed from once feces-covered beans. Must be either really good or just really rare...

Ahh Durian, it took me 3 trips to Malaysia and a whole lot of determination to understand the fanatical love some people have for this crazy piece of nature. I'm proud to say I now get it, and am looking forward to my next trip so I can sit on a plastic stool in the street somewhere and savor this smelly wonder.

Tripe is very common in the Vietnamese Pho soup. I've had it. Trust me, it won't kill you. I had fried pig intestines recently, which isn;t bad if it's cleaned well. Tastes like fatty pork.

Balut is a popular dish in some parts of Asia. My Filipina gf loves it. I haven't had the chance to...um, "experience".... it yet.

I've tried Durian - smells like hell and I'm not exactly lining up for more.... it really is a cultivated taste. But hey I grew up on a farm where we ate tripe and I love it. Also entrails that are properly cleaned, don't smell one bit and are perfectly delicious

Tripe was my grandfather's favorite dish.

Tripe was very popular in the UK until relatively recently. There is a big push by Chef's to get it back on our menu's as part of ensuring sustainability in our food chain.

And if prepared, cooked and stored right it does not smell like urine, it doesn't smell of much at all.

Tripe is not that bad if prepared right. Anthony Bourdain loves the stuff.

Reply
Cathy on 02/ 2/09

Tripe is actually really tasty if you know how to prepare it the right way. If it smells bad still, then it might mean it's not fresh anymore.

I'm kind of disappointed with this post. Being a diet site, I was hoping it would be more of this: http://www.diet-blog.com/archives/2008/06/02/the_most_sugary_beverage_is.php and not just unusual food from around the world.

that "DRINK" is really disgustin...not the tripe. I think that who talks about tripe, and all the other foods, have not tried them before then tellingthat they are disgustin. I can talk about the tripe as it is th eonly one that i eat and believe me, if it is coccked as it should be, it can be really good. I agrre with the fact that it is not that nice to see, but once it is cooked, cut in small stripes into sousage and mint...well, come in italy and then we can talk about that. As we say in italy:" Don't eat with your eyes!"

Oh and try telling the millions of people that eat Haggis on Burns night that tripe is not fit for human consumption!

Oh goodness, Hilarious! My favorite fruit is featured. I never thought it smelt bad, just really powerful. I was frightened though, when I first tried it as a kid but then the deliciousness won me over.

Tripe is also a favorite. Wow... This was a blow to the Asians. You ought to focus more on Scottish food. I hear they're really horrible. =)

You know, I never like lists like these. All this means is that these foods are considered disgusting (or even just smelly) according to a specific Western mindset. I prefer Michael Pollen's thought, that things considered seven stages beyond edible in one culture are a delicacy fifty miles away.

Have you ever heard of Delicious Monsters? It's a tropical plant that gives you a mouth full of acid if you eat it raw. Wait until it ripens and it's supposed to taste like fruit cocktail.

I like that show "Bizarre Foods" with Andrew Zimmern. He's really fun to watch...he eats/has eaten most of the things on that list, plus more. I think most of the "gross" foods that he's tried really weren't "gross", just foods that are an acquired taste. I could see durian being an acquired taste. It does sound really gross, but it's probably not any different than, say, Roquefort cheese or something.

I haven't tried any of these foods, but I have eaten mealworms and some interesting fruits in Central America. Lots of the flavors are just a bit different, but some were pretty yummy.

hahahaha...i love durian. i can eat that for the rest of my life and nothing else.

the tripe meat is part of the asian cuisine, so that doesn't shock me.

Reply
Hayyley on 02/ 5/09

ohkay..... firstly, durian does NOT smell like rotting or decomposing corpse! The first time anyone smells it or tastes it might give the person a shock, but trust me, the second time you eat it, you'll actually like it! It doesnt even taste bad at all! people here make durian cakes, sweets and all, used as flavors in many desserts, let alone the fruit itself.

and second... tripe meat or whatever, that cow stomach thing, doest NOT smell like stale bladder! it doesnt even HAVE any smell! i eat it often, i mean, it's sold in the markets, and it's used in soups and stuff. PLEASE, do NOT convey such wrong understandings and statements.

AND THIRDLY (ALTHOUGH MOST IMPORTANTLY)
QUOTE:
"Typically, tripe, guts and other undesirables are used to make dog food, not people food. The stink means it's unfit for human consumption."
Emphasis : DOG food, unfit for HUMAN consumption.
dogs are animals, what makes YOU any different from animals or in this case, specifically, dogs? To tell you the truth, i have eaten dog pellets just to have a taste of it, and my dog is allowed to eat any kind of "human food" so long as it's not going to cause harm to it. I can understand and tolerate the fact that there are many choosy eaters or people who criticizes food they do not accept, but i do not tolerate that thing about dogs.

Tripe is not very popular here (Chile) but it is common, its even sold on supermarkets. And with the right tomatoe suauce and moshed popatoes is pretty good, I love it, not smelly at all, and not hard for the stomach.

I recomend it.

Once upon a time, I waitressed at an Italian restaurant to pick up some extra cash. This was authentic Italian -- owned and run by Italians, and patronized almost exclusively by Italians. On Wednesdays, the special was tripe, and I swear every elderly Italian from miles around would descend upon the restaurant for a dish of tripe in sauce. It may be considered gross in the States, but the old Italians adore it.

my baby girl now 25 was brought up on trout as a toddler lol! she loved it mixed with lots of vegetables and mashed..it was considered a good nutritious and easily digested meal here in the UK..Spain too. I never remember it smelling of urine..in fact it had hardly any smell at all. Smelly tripe is not fresh. I never had the guts (excuse the pun!) to try it but my baby girl loved it and thrived on it! I was a very young and hard up for money mom so it was a great to have access to this cheap but nutritious food.

I would make it in a big casserole with rice and veg then freeze it in portions for her supper.

We have had many a good laugh about it as she now could not stand the thought of having eaten tripe as a baby!

I am also scared of Yak Butter tea, anybody had that?

What is actually "disgusting" is pretty subjective; I'm not insulted, but I feel like that should have been stated instead of being made to sound like people who eat said foods are off their rocker.

I've lived in Singapore my entire life and the first fruit that I ate and loved was Durian. Depending on the tree, Durians can actually vary in flavour, from more pungent and intense to lighter and sweeter. People who like them also might prefer a certain kind more than the other.

I've never tried the "poop coffee" - unlike fugu where it has to be specially prepared or you could be poisoned/dead, I've ever heard of anyone falling sick from the coffee.

Stumbled on this page.

I find it hilarious that any editor/contributor to a site that promotes/critiques different methods of glorified starvation is calling food from other cultures disgusting.

I'll take a slice of maggot cheese over a sentence of eating cabbage soup or handfuls almonds and cottage cheese anyday.
