12 Shockingly Absurd Food Inventions

When you think of the great inventors and inventions of our time, you might consider Alexander Graham Bell and the cotton gin--at the very least, the PEZ dispenser.

I DOUBT you'll think of the spinning ice cream cone or the dude who invented toilet candy. But yet, someone thought our world was LACKING without them!

So, just how ridiculous is the human food-mind. Let's find out...

Twirling Spaghetti Fork

TWIRLINGFORK.jpg

For a mere $8.99 and 2 AAA batteries (not included) even the novice pasta-enthusiast can eat with the skill and zeal of your uncle Tony.

Car French-Fry Holder

FRENCHFRYHOLDER.jpg

If driving while drinking coffee, doing your makeup and talking on the phone wasn't enough. Now you can eat your fries--and KETCHUP--too.

Pita-Toaster Prototype

PITATOASTER.JPG

It looks like Pac-Man, but it's actually an experimental attempt at toasting pita-bread. The female version has a pink bow.

A&W Floats in a Bottle

AWFLOATS.jpg

No reason to order 2 straws at the soda parlor. You and your sweetie can enjoy your very own A&W ice cream float, in a bottle.

Widgets in the Guinness

GUINNESSWIDGET.jpg

Nope, it's not the name of an Irish horror movie. Actually that little ball in your Guinness can is filled with pressurized nitrogen--it makes beer sudsy!

Sour Flush Candy Toilets

TOILETCANDY.jpg

Get a load of this crap! Yeah, that was TOO easy. Now, if you've ever wondered what your TOILET tastes like, for $19.80 you can lick 12 of them.

The Pizza Cone

PIZZACONE.jpg

Is it deep-dish or New York style--who knows! Either way the wrapped up "Pizza Cone" is taking the world by storm. Mama mia!

Focus on Your Coffee Mug

LENSMUG.jpg

You can thank the advent of the digital camera for this. Bulky outdated camera equipment has given way to bulky NEWAGE coffee mugs.

Bringing Back the Automat

BAMNAUTO.jpg

BAMN! The automat is back. With a little loose change you can open doors to ALL the fast-food you can stomach.

Butter like a Glue Stick

STICKBUTTER.jpg

Take your spatulas and THROW them away! If you like putting together scrapbooks, you'll LOVE buttering your toast with this!

We All Spin for Ice Cream

SPINCONE.jpg

If you've ever sprained your neck licking a lollipop, the motorized ice cream cone is for you! Please, fork over the $12.99 before you hurt yourself.

Electrolux Scanner Toaster

SCANNERTOASTER.jpg

With Sarah Palin, Howard Stern and the Virgin Mary all appearing on toast, this scanner lets you bring your own holy deity to the breakfast table.

No doubt, Albert Einstein is WHIRLING in his grave!

That Guinness widget is the only thing that allows them to sell the beer in cans and bottles and have it be remotely like a draft beer.

It's a good invention, and a good thing for dieters. Guinness is a relatively low calorie beer without all the taste/quality compromises of a light beer.

Many of the others are ridiculous, but the widget is an ingenious solution to an actual problem.

Widgets are an awesome invention - only way of getting a decent guiness (or Kilkenny) if you're not in a pub with it on tap.

To say that the widget is ridiculous shows how little I should pay attention to this list!

I really like the pizza cone idea, none of them really promote healthy natural food.

Reply

I like the pizza-cone, too. I don't see why it's so horrible. Calzones are widely accepted...they are basically just pizzas folded in half.

i dont know of any parent who would want their kids to even pretend to eat out of a toilet, no matter how "novel" it is. wow. some of this stuff just absolutely boggles my mind. although, the camera mug was hot :D

haha i have actually gotten the candy toilet ... i used it as a center peice for my brother's 21st birthday cake... he was potty trained by my mom telling him that He Man used the big boy potty so i thought it would be funny to have He Man and Skelator on the cake fighting over the toilet... it turned out great... but by the end of the night He Man was drunk and Skelatore was pattin his back while he puked in the toilet.. i think i have the pics still somewhere.. i have to say it wouldnt have gone that well if i haddent been able to find that candy toilet thing... hahaha

I think a couple of those are good inventions. The widget in the guiness and the a and w pre mixed floats?

Reply
Chelsie on 09/29/08

Those float things are actually REALLY horrible tasting. They were on sale at our local grocery store awhile back, so we bought a bunch thinking they would be awesome. As it turned out, they were really gross. It was kind of like drinking a think melted orange push-up, but much worse.

Reply
Sue Lester on 10/17/08

We've tried the "pre-mixed" root beer float...NASTY stuff

I saw on tv the other day a Knork... it is a fork that has a sharpened edge so that you could cut your food... this seemed stupid to me... a sharp edge on the fork you are putting in your mouth... if it is sharp enough to cut thru a steak it will slaughter your cheeks, i'd think anyways

Reply
Eo on 10/17/08

I am not in the habit of rubbing my fork against my cheek personally... maybe I eat strangely but unless the edge is as sharp as a paring knife I don't see an issue?

Reply
Fran on 09/29/08

(I ... kind of like that coffee mug.)

There's some awesome WTFery on display here, though. I laughed out loud at the butter stick.

And yeah, that girl really does look like Ali Larter!

As many have already pointed out, Guiness widget is completely necessary. They have a device in their bottled beers too which aerates the brew. Tap is still preferable, but the widget at least brings you a step closer.

The twirling fork thingie reminds me of something I saw in a beauty magazine...a battery operated twirling mascara wand. Seriously, we are becoming one very lazy society if we can't muster the energy to twirl our own spaghetti or mascara wands. Or ice cream cones, for that matter.

I agree with the other posters about the widget though...I think that's a seriously great idea, especially for those of us that like a good draft Guinness at home.

I wouldn't drink those premixed floats either. I saw them at the grocery store and they just looked disgusting to me. They're probably loaded with preservatives and stabilizers that make them taste like crap. I'd rather make my own, thank you very much!

never underestimate human laziness! That twirling fork is brilliant! The butter on a stick is pretty disgusting though...

The burger-in-an-automat one actually wasn´t that weird... Burger-king does this, and just take a look at the website of one of the most popular fast-food places in the Neatherlands:

Reply
Bethama on 09/29/08

Honestly, most of that doesn't seem too bad to me. The twirling pasta fork and ice cream cone are silly, but obviously aimed at children (and who knows - if they have some fun with their food, they might learn to eat more slowly and with greater variety). The automat actually looks like fun - the American equivalent of conveyer belt sushi, perhaps - and it certainly won't encourage people to eat more than, say, a drive through; in fact, for every person that stuffs themselves silly, I'm sure two others will actually eat LESS than if they felt the need to gauge their appetite and order everything at once. The toaster printer looks like fun.

Yes, the toilet candy is kind of off-putting, but I've seen worse. My favorite (in the sense that I had to buy it on the spot) was a candy TOOTHBRUSH filled with sour "toothpaste" goo. I only hope that the manufacturers appreciated the irony. That, or were financially backed by the dentists of America.

Reply
marilyn on 09/29/08

I think the toast thing is kinda neat. Silly, and I'm certainly not spending money on it, but kinda neat anyway.

Reply
lynn on 09/29/08

the floats arent as good as homemade but arent too bad flavor wise.

i must own this!

Reply

It's probably been said earlier in this thread but, that camera mug isn't real. It's a concept, that's just a computer rendered picture. And also, all the best, most expensive camera lenses tend to STILL be that size -- outdated my squishy hindquarters!

I hardly think the creator of this page realizes that the creator of the guinness widget was knighted for his invention. absolutely ludacris for you to call it absurd.

Reply
english on 10/ 5/08

You mean ludicrous. Ludacris is the rapper.

Oh man... If the days are coming when people associate rappers with normal English words... Oh man.

But that toaster scanner is amazingly simple technology, made into an amazingly cool idea.

How different is a pizza cone from the traditional folded-over pizza Italians call calzone?

Reply
Runtheygotguns on 10/15/08

Web, that's what businessman who think they need more money so they can buy the newest car do. They rip off an idea, and call it something else.

Reply

I think that absurd isn't the right word for these items. Some are absurd, but the widget for instance is important to what makes Guiness, Guiness. And that pizza cone looks yummy. Good post, just wrong title.

Reply
Photovoltage on 10/ 4/08

Mate, get over yourself. The Guinness widget is crucial to the formation of that traditional foamy head on your pint. It's also present in many draught (draft) style beers over here in the UK.

Reply
custer on 10/ 5/08

some of these look awesome and yummy (Pizza Cone. Yum.) while some ARE practical(the Guinness beer widget).

The toaster looks fun but most of the others are utterly ridiculous.(butter in stick form. WTF)

Reply

With a combined 15 years experience making New York style street pizza, stretched by hand and baked in a stone oven, I have absolutely no idea how a pizza cone could be constructed.

Reply
Craig on 10/12/08

If you want what has to be the worlds worst junk food invention you have to come to Scotland for the Deep Fried Mars Bar (a UK Mars Bar is similar to a US Milky Way)... Made in a traditional greasy Scottish Chip Shop: The bar is covered in batter and deep fried til crispy. eurgh, I can feel my arteries harden just thinking about it.

See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deep-fried_Mars_bar

These are cute. I like the spinning cone. I think that my daughter with CP could use it. It would mean she would eat more ice cream then she wears! I may have to Google it!
