I don't agree with where they all are, but it's cute. Of course, there's only a few fruit, mainly in the melon group, that I could see belonging on the more-untasty end of the spectrum.

xkcd is too geeky for its own good. I love xkcd.

Very subjective, but cute.

Pomegranates: untasty?? Who made this list!? LOL.

(building on xkcd) - ya know, if you were to do a correlation analysis of this data, you'd find a clear trend from (untasty, difficult) to (tasty, easy). I guess we should start finding ways to make edibile-peel grapefruit - they'd probably become delicious.

Why are green apples so far down on the tasty index? The nerve! Just kidding, but at least they out rank red apples, by which I assume they mean Red Delicious apples. Those things have no taste--they are not apples!

grapefruit is way down there?!?! insanity!

Tomatoes are not a fruit.

Reply
RooGrrrl on 03/03/08

Tomatoes are technically, scientifically a fruit as they contain seeds. By this rule, avocadoes, pumpkins, peppers and cucumbers are also fruits. However, it was in 1893 in the when U.S. farmers tried to classify tomatoes as fruit that the legal definition (for reason of tariff laws) changed by the Supreme Court to apply only to foods generally eaten as dessert.
"Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit; wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad."

Ha! I hadn't heard that quote before. Lovin' it!

It's great. It's just begging to be cross-stitched.

I sort of agree with the "easy" factor on most of these, but the "tasty" factor is incredibly subjective. Apples are my favorite fruit! And I LOVE pomegranates. But peaches gross me out...something about the fuzziness of the skin on my tongue is really weird. I don't mind them if they're peeled and sliced, but then they wouldn't be where they are on the "easy" factor. You just can't win, I guess.

Could alwyas buy canned :D

Nope, I hate canned peaches. They're too mushy for me.

I have to disagree with pineapples place on the difficult scale. It's as easy to me as preparing a watermelon, which the comic has ranked much easier.

Just twist off the leaves. Then cut it into eighths, the long way. Run your knife against the rind and cut out each of the eight slices. Then eat the fruit off the rind, which was not removed from the knife. Put it all in tupperware and refrigerate.

It's definitely worth it for the fresh pineapple. You can feel the enzymes tingle the tongue!

RooGrrrl on 03/03/08

Sadly for me, those enzymes, or acids as I think they are technically, do more than tingle. I can't eat more than a small piece of fresh pineapple without getting minor chemical burns on my tongue. That definitely makes it more difficult for me to eat. :(

Reply
Kailash on 03/04/08

That's the enzymes eating our tongues. For me, the chemical burn is half the fun.

Spectra on 03/12/08

I LOVE pineapple and I don't mind the "burn" from them, but I find that if I eat too many of them, I get canker sores.

Pomegranites are definitely misplaced. They need to be highest on the tasty list, and highest on the difficulty list.

Although difficult, I contend that you burn more calories than you consume with pomegranites, because they're so much work, lol. The perfect fruit.

I agree with those who say pomegranates need to be higher on tasty; just because they are difficult, their tasty quotient does not decrease. furthermore, where is the mangosteen on this list? If peaches are as good as we can do tastewise, this world is in trouble. (Though, yeah, a good one is pretty awesome.) And easewise, well, What about all that derned fuzz, huh? Chart seems a little temperate-climat-ocentric to me ;)

Reply
soozeequeue on 03/04/08

yeah, the fuzz, and if you do find a good one, the drips. Where are the nectarines? Similar taste, no fuzz.

What's a mangosteen? Is it different than a mango?

Blackberries, yum. And let's add some saskatoons for us Western Canadians, yes?

Need some kiwis. Difficult if you peel the suckers, but I understand down under they don't bother.

Papaya, for salsa. Limes, ditto.

Some nice crisp chinese apple pears.

I think I'll go make a fruit salad.

Kailash on 03/04/08

Kiwis are easy and taste great. I don't mind the fuzz. Just bite the tough ends off and spit them in the trash. Then eat it lengthwise.

What's the big deal about peach fuzz? Just take a big bite and chew. Eat it over a sink, and no worries about the mess.

I eat kiwis, pomegranate, and passion fruit with a teaspoon. Cut in half, and eat it like a pudding cup. Problem solved!

Also, mangoes are easy if instead of peeling, you cut it in two "halves" around the pit, criss-cross like you would a ham, turn the peel inside out, and just bite the chunks off.

Spectra on 03/12/08

Blackberries would be high on my delicious list, but definitely NOT on the easy list...I get mine from my dad's blackberry bushes and to harvest about 2 pints of them, I endure about 25 or more mosquito bites and I always get poked by some of the prickers. They're worth every bit of that, though!

Where would you place durian?

Reply
Spectra on 03/04/08

Durian=high on "tasty", low on "smells good" LOL

I don't agree with all of the fruit placements, but it is cute. It should have cucumbers on it. (high on tasty and easy).

I like it, but I don't think it is very accurate. Why are oranges and bananas below average taste?

I'm curious to know why he thinks seeded grapes are slightly tastier than seedless grapes. :P
