One KFC Ad You'll Never See
When you spend a lot of time surfing the interweb you often see certain pictures appear again and again on various websites. One of these pictures is that of an overweight boy at McDonald's.
Someone then took this picture, enlarged it, coupled it with some Kentucky Fried Chicken, and then started posting it on bus shelters.

Now that would be truth in advertising! The public needs to see more of that. I find it really hard to eat where there are mirrors that reflecting me in the midst of taking big bites of food. Maybe there should be more restaurants with mirrored walls, as well.
ReplyThat's Russian kiddy wrestler Dzhambulat Khotokhov. He's about eight years old now, but that photo is an old AP photo.
Here's another photo.
ReplyBut...but...KFC no longer has trans fats!
:-)
Brian
ReplyYeah, those new commercials where they show a giant bucket of chicken and advertise "No trans fats" are unbelievable. I mean, if you want to eat a bucket of fried chicken, fine. But, don't think there is going to be one bit of nutritional value in there. I don't get particularly upset about advertising, but that one is just stupid.
ReplyDoesn't matter; the result of heating an unsaturated oil is at least as bad as trans fat.
ReplyI would've been more impressed if the photo were from a real KFC. This photo is just a polemic...
ReplyI have seen that picture so many times.. and it makes me sad...
ReplyWhile I think it's a great idea to expose the consequences of a fast food diet, it seems a little shady to change the photo to implicate a particular fast food chain. Couldn't they find any obese kids to photograph at a real KFC? Surely that wouldn't be too hard.
I'm not a big fan of dishonesty, even if it's in the service of a good cause.
ReplyThinking outloud, not passing judgement -- I wonder about the ethics of using pictures of children in this way.
ReplyI dont blame fast food chains for making people fat. Nor will I blame their advertising. I blame lazy people and their lazy choices, in the case of this child I blame his irresponsible parents, and it disgusts me.
It's child abuse as far as I'm concerned.
ReplyThat kid is uber-Michelin! He should do their commercials, or maybe just serve a life sentence as a tire on my car. 60,000 miles would sure flatten out his stomach.
;)
I can't believe they disguise that disfigurement under the guise of wrestling. What's up with that? 4 year old heavyweight division??
I call it: Child abuse. Shame on the parents.
ReplyBob, I agree with you. I think it's very inappropriate to use a child's image in this way.
ReplyDoes this kid get any profits from this picture??
McD's or KFC ..it's all the same non-food. But its cheap and when you're poor, have worked all day and want meat, well, this is where one gets it.
If this is, indeed, Dzhambulat Khotokhov, the child wrestler, I can't pretend to know the Russian culture. At the same time, I KNOW I don't agree with all cultures and their ways yet attempt to respect them. In some cultures, fat is considered wealth.
I just find it rather sad that people stare and are critical of this child in this culture. It's my hope he doesn't suffer from that on top of all the physical problems he's going to have to endure as he ages.
ReplyYou will never see an even remotely overweight child in any fast food commercial. But we can't lay all the blame at the fast food industry for the fact that there are so many obese kids in the US...I mean c'mon, there are alot of parents out there that need to take their share of the blame too... Me included. Kids need to be taught good eating habits from the time they can start to eat table food. I know its hard but if you don't start them on these foods, then they won't be as prone to eat them. I never started my daughter on candy or sodas and she is nearly 9 still doesn't eat candy or drink sodas. However I made the mistake, like many parents of letting her eat stuff like cheeseburgers, etc...sure its much easier than hearing them whine. I was raised to eat what was set in front of you....and I started doing that w/my kid...she whined, and sometimes wouldn't eat...now some parents would think...thats just horrible...but when she finally got hungry enough, she ate her veggies...or whatever I had fixed...and she ended up liking most of them. So now I cook alot more and we hardly ever eat out...She is allowed one happy meal a month...she has lost the 10 lbs she needed to lose and feels better. So parents, if you don't want your kid to look like the pic above, take the time and make the effort...and stick w/it...consistancy is the key...in the end, your kids will thank you...
ReplyWhat a shame that this world has become so "FAST TRACKED" that parents don't have time to cook a decent evening meal and sit down with their kids anymore. I raised two sons (as a single parent for over ten years) and we always had our meals sitting down together BEFORE attending PTA/school events, baseball, scouting, football, karate, music lessons, and so on and so on. And yes, I DID work 8 hours a day/5 days a week AND manage to be a den mother, cubmaster, taxi to EVERY camping trip (for other kids whose parents didn't attend or help out with scouting activities), attend all little league practice, and be score keeper for all games. My evenings were spent with my sons and their friends and activities for the most part. And amazingly I still managed to have time for Church, myself and friends/family. I was doing nothing miraculous, just TCB.
ReplyMy nest is now empty (except for sleepovers and pool parties with Mimi and Grandaddy) My sons are grown, still happy in their FIRST marriages! Both are successful in business, emotionally well adjusted, and are good, honest, decent MEN.They have never nor now are overweight.(Except for that pre-adolescent chubby period). Both boys have never been in jail nor have had any criminal involvement. Both sons are TERRIFIC FATHERS.(even though their father was never involved in their development or activities) They both have kids in sports, scouts and other activities. They are INVOLVED parents - not "drop-off parents." Am I proud? You better believe it.I don't consider myself exceptional nor do I expect a medal for motherhood. Lots of parents did the very same things I did. The fast food thing? Well of course we ate at fast food restaurants, lots of times. But for the most part we ate at home with those 30 minute to fix suppers. And when they wanted to eat out,THEY almost always chose our favorite sit down, family style restaurant, where food choices included good veggies, lean meats, and their favorite bavarian creme pie.! It didn't take any longer than hitting McD's. It's not hard to find a local good restaurant and become a "regular". You can call ahead to many places to get your table and/or place your order in advance. Voila!, a good decent meal- quicker! It all comes down to establishing your priorities in life, and making the time to accomplish them. The rewards will greatly outweigh any "sacrifice" you may think you're making. As for me? Well, I am now enjoying volunteering and attending PTA,scouting, soccer, school volunteering with 5 of the most precious, polite, well mannered, physically and emotionally fit grand children anyone could ever hope for. I am eternally greatful for the strength and guidance God gave me to endure raising my sons. Most important thing I ever did for my sons ,grandsons, and grand daughters? Taking them to church-regularly. You will NEVER regret giving your children all the time, effort and love you can give of yourself. When you see your Grandchildren in their first Christmas play you will see your rewards for the life/lives you brought into this world. CHILDREN LEARN WHAT THEY LIVE. BE A GOOD EXAMPLE-ITS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY AND THE GREATEST GIFT YOU CAN GIVE TO YOUR CHILD.
Bravo just what I was thinking when I saw that commercial it takes less time and most likely less money to prepare a healthy meal at home. We need more parents in church, scouting and involved in the PTA!
ReplyI agree with everything that everyone said. But 0 boy do I love KFC chicken!
ReplyI really can not stand the way America in general has ALWAYS got to have someone to blame...why in the world does everyone want to go on and on about the fast food restaurants being so fattening when the real simple truth is that IF EVERYONE JUST EXERCISED A LITTLE BIT EACH DAY IT WOULD NOT MATTER WHAT THEY ATE?
ReplyI am not excluding myself. About five years ago (before divorce and beginning to work full time) I worked out six days every week - and I ate whatever I wanted to eat. The real "EVIL" in this world that has caused so many American's to become obese is the fact that we all live such fast paced lifestyles that we refuse to even turn the channel on our televisions without a remote control - God forbid we have to actaully get out of our seat for anything. Everything is delivered to our doors and handed to us - Convenience is a necessity because no one has the time to do the things that use to be such simple tasks.
Not to mention the fact that IT IS NOT SAFE FOR OUR CHILDREN TO PLAY OUTSIDE ANYMORE - STORIES EVERY DAY OF A DIFFERENT CHILD BEING ABDUCTED FROM THEY'RE OWN HOME HAS LEFT PARENTS NO CHOICE BUT TO KEEP OUT KIDS IN THE HOUSE - LEAVING ONLY CABLE TELEVISION AND VIDEO GAMES TO ENTERTAIN THEM. We have allowed physical education to be taken out of school (or at least it isn't a "required" credit anymore) and now the majority of children have access to fast food (pizza hut is on sale at my daughters middle school daily) at school. There are many factors to blame, but the fast food industry is only filling a need created by American's fast paced lifestyles. I recently joined a gym and my sixteen year old is enjoying working out with me. Its been extremely hard to make time for it each night and I have had to neglect other things that I used to do nightly to make it work, but I feel better then I've felt in years and I'm glad that I've done it. I just wish that everyone would wake up and stop putting the blame on everyone else for the state our lives are in...its up TO US, NO ONE ELSE to take care of ourselves - no one forces anyone to eat fast food - and no one straps us to our sofa's at night - its a choice we each make. I think its ridiculous that everyone is putting so much blame on the fast food industry, that isn't the only fattening thing that we can get our hands on. Next everyone will be trying to sue the maker of Little Debby snack cakes or Hostess...everyone needs to snap a little bit and put the blame where it belongs - on our own shoulders!
KFC and McDonalds (etc etc etc) might not provide the healthiest choices, but they don't force the public to consume. The parents of that child in the are the ones to blame. It is depressing and abusive to allow one's child to reach such an unhealthy weight at such an early age.
