McDonald's Nuggets Get the Heart Healthy Tick
Diet books endorse processed foods. State health authorities endorse fast food. Welcome to the confusing and incoherent world of "healthy food".
McDonald's Australia have "persuaded" the National Heart Foundation to place the healthy tick on 9 of its meals.
The national manager of the Heart Foundation's tick program, Susan Anderson, said it was a world first for McDonald's to change its recipes to meet tough nutrition standards. She said the meals would keep the tick only if the new food combinations were not changed. For instance, salads had to be included in most meals to meet the required vegetable intake. (source - emphasis added)
A world first? I don't think so. Hasn't the trans fat debate of the last few years been all about meeting nutrition standards.
Here's how it works: (source)
The first meal gets the tick. The second doesn't.
McChicken Burger, salad plus Italian dressing and water
versus
McChicken Burger, fries and Coke
3 nuggets with sweet & sour sauce, salad with Italian dressing and OJ
versus
3 nuggets with BBQ sauce, fries and Coke
Chicken nuggets get the tick? Apparently you just thrown in a salad and juice and it becomes a healthy meal.
McDonald's is paying AUD$330,000 per year to get the heart foundation tick. Am I the only one who feels a tad cynical about this?
Their juice has as much or more sugar than Coke anyway, and the vitamins are just as non-existant. This is outrageous.
Replythis is one of the most stupid things i have heard about in quite some time. wow. if that is healthy, then what the hell isn't anymore?
ReplyNo, I don't think any agency should receive funding that could affect the unbiased opinion.
I wonder how much the nuggets, salad and juice cost. $10?
You can get a pretty great healthy wholesome meal for that price.
*Sigh* Fast Food restaurants have to much power. They could lobby for the moon to be renamed and it would happen.
ReplyAll we have to do is not eat there.
ReplyOh, man; to say this pisses me off is an understatement. What a TOTAL JOKE! Australia's National Heart Foundation clearly cares nothing about nutrition or health.
Incidentally, AUD$330,000 is approximately US$257,000. A quarter of a million dollars for that bulls**t certification!
Reply"*Sigh* Fast Food restaurants have too much power. They could lobby for the moon to be renamed and it would happen."
ReplyThe green cheese would definitely have trans-fats. :-)
It's kind of like Diet Pepsi being labeled a "smart choice."
ReplyI even saw that label on a bag of snack mix (with trans fat of course). What a joke.
brittini, the only unhealthy meal would be asbestus with a large cup of paint and a side of radium, I think.
Ryan, I'm sure anyone who is even remotely concerned with their health does not eat at McDonald's already. The problem I see here is that whenever people that could benefit from a health campaign from any authority see one, they'll take it even less seriously now. It is the same thing Jim discussed in "Is good nutrition too confusing?"
ReplyThe difference is the "smart choice" is a made-up logo by PepsiCo to promote their own products; the "heart tick" is an implicit endorsement from a non-profit health organization that is supposed to be promoting recommendations based on evidence and data.
Replywow'i would say that every fast food restaurent has there way of keeping there customers happy all the time. but we all know that any fast food ain't good for us at all. eat smart and keep yourself active that's the only way to keep yourself healthy.
ReplyIM A MANAGER AT McDonalds i may way 120kg but it is not becouse of the burgures but becouses of no exercise today society is to lazy
Replythat is so untrue! There food is so unhealthy! I mean when i think of the place, i think of fat! And i rarely eat there. Sorry Macdonald's. I don't want to carry around fat from you food for the rest of my life.
ReplyI disagree with all of you, I whole-heartedly support this.
ReplyThink about it for a minute, would you? Fast food is consumed by millions of people every day and a huge chunk of that number goes to Mcdonalds. Now, outside of actually banning fast food outright, there is no hope in hell you'll stop people buying Mcdonalds, KFC, Hungry Jacks, etc etc. So, although this isn't perfect, its still a damn good thing.
To get the Heart Foundation tick, Mcdonalds has to comply to strict criteria - like the ad says, it must be earned. So how is this a bad thing? Even if there are still the standard meals available, providing more and more healthier options is surely a good thing?
Fast food is incredibly popular, and chains such as Mcdonalds working towards getting this kind of endorsement is nothing but a good thing.
I agree with Indraunt. While it's not perfect, it is still a good thing for Macdonalds to do this ..
For them to introduce the new pasta meal for kids - i think that is so great! While maybe the kids now are used to eating the cheese burger & fries, the kids in the future will have the pasta to choose as their first time macdonalds meals, which will reduce obesity in kids in the future ! They ARE our future.. as for us adults, it is up to us to make a healthy eating choice, and if we choose to eat salads instead of fries that's alot healthier isn't it ?
ReplyI find it rather perthetic that they had to pretty much buy that tick!
I have to agree with Matt the manager that most people are just lazy and it's not just what they eat. I'm not saying it's heathy, f*** no!!! But my friend Ben some how ate it for 3 months straight, 3 or more meals and is under weight, you can see his some of his ribs... Cant say it's because hes fit because he's a computer nurd and doesn't do anything sides work with computers, eat and play computer games..
So figure that out if McDonalds is so unheathy and fattning.
I still say they shouldn't of gotten the tick though, it's screwed!
ReplyPasta makes people fat. I would rather eat a hamburger. Probably has meat in it.
But if it comes from McDonald's, you can be sure that it's imitation food.
ReplyNo - too much pasta (like any other food) makes people fat. It clocks in at 180 calories a cup. There are plenty of noodle-eating societies who are now eating more meat and are becoming obese (probably unrelated to the meat too).
ReplyToday's problem is that we are focusing on fast food, blaming the food industry for the obesity problem. The cause of the problem goes deeper than that....hundreds of channels of TV, playstation, xbox, nintendo wii, computer games, online gaming, the internet, faster paced lives, more vehicles and less walking, less physical work, the list goes on. We live in a society where it's always somebody else's fault, let's find someone to blame. Take responsibility for your own health, if you don't want to eat fast food, don't eat it, but stop blaming it for the problem. Simple. If your lifestyle is affecting your health, it's your fault, so change it.
ReplyThe first meal gets a tick because it doesn't have fries. Sod the burgers and nuggets, it's the fries that are soaked in oil.
In any case, regardless, it's not McDonald's who's making society fat. McDonald's is merely catering to society's desires. We want fat food that's soaked in grease. It's obvious we want this otherwise they'd be out of business. It's not McDonald's responsibility to make us eat well or not die of coronary arrest. It's out own damn fault if we don't excercise and eat it non-stop.
Replyits unbelieveable how the organistaions that is suppose to look after people, are now caring more about the money than anyone's health. how could they make such decision. if someone thinks that they haven't done it because of the money then why the hell on earth would a company pay $330000 even if the food criteria meets the heart foundation standards, its really obvious. and the useless arguments they are against people it just doen't make sense we are having the overweight or obese problems mostly because of this junk-food and they are telling us that they will be the solution. the only way they can help is to stop their buisness. and if they really are concerned about people then don't be a devel by selling junk-food.
Replydude you having being looking at the entire picture properly have you? mcdonalds have not earned the tick they hav bought it by paying $330000 every year. make sure next time you want to comment on something comfirme your knowledge on the news.
Replyi love maccas thats all i have to say... every food is fattening thats ONLY if u eat too much of it... food is fukin food... :)
ReplyHow can it be that someone else or some other entity (the devel?) is responsible for people getting obese? Do they force their food down people's throats?....no people choose to eat it, just like they choose to drink alcohol, smoke cigarettes, and so on. Personal choice. You can't buy the Tick, you have to meet strict criteria before you qualify for it, you have to pay for your food to be tested by a Lab, re-tested and so on, until you get it right...and it ain't cheap, even if you're a mega-national like MacD's...it's a fact, so get over it. MacDonalds made you fat?...oh, please.
ReplyOk, I work at McDonald's, and I'm close friends with several different managers. First off, McDonald's does NOT sell imitation food. The beef is made from cows, the chicken is made from chicken, the bacon is made from pigs, surely you people can do the math?
People spout off that McDonald's makes you fat. How do you back up an arguement like that? Do you eat McDonald's for a month, and say, "Yay! McDonald's made me fat?" Yes, it's true that if you eat McDonald's straight for a month (Like Supersize Me) will be unhealthy, and make gain weight. But honestly, there are other factors that come into play. Like exercise, for example. If you eat McDonald's often, and never exercise, yes, you will get very unhealthy.
I eat McDonald's often, and I exercise, and I never gain or lose weight. I've recently had a docter's check up, and he said I was healthy, with nothing to even say that I've been eating take away.
And, cantona took it completely out of my mouth. The Tick cannot be bought, the food has to be tested and re-tested, and it has to meet certain standards.
People can't just spout off statements like, "McDonald's bought their Heart Ticks!" or "It'll make you fat, and give you heart disease!" Yes, it is unhealthy if you eat it everyday. Why don't people grow up and look after themselves instead of blaming fast food?
The world is beginning to become more and more unhealthy, with more cars, less walking, more fast food, etc. But that doesn't mean you can't go out and kick a ball around, or go for a run. It's your own fault if you get fat (unless, of course, you have a hereditry disease). Get off your backside and do something about your weight, instead of whinging and expecting someone else to do something about it.
ReplyYou guys at the top of the list can go flush your head down a toilet =P.
If you cared to do any research before slagging off at McDonalds, 330K covers the costs of the rigorous testing that the National Heart Foundation does on the meals EVERY WEEK. If McDonalds let the standards on the food slip even a little bit, the Tick will be revoked, as they have done with over 100 other meals in the last 2 years.
McDonalds has acknowledged that obesity is a huge problem, and is doing their part to help. As I'm sure we all know, McDonalds is the most influential of all fast food chains. If they take the initiative, then other chains will follow. This is one of the only ways that obesity will be reigned back in.
You may be asking why McDonalds still sells their unhealthy meals? Until they have more Tick approved healthy choices, they have no choice but to keep selling the unhealthy meals to stay in business. Soon this will change, as people grow accustomed to healthy fast food.
Why can't anyone give McDonalds a second chance? You all criticise it, but I bet you all still go there. McDonalds also donates millions of dollars every year to charity, half of you wouldn't donate a cent... not knowingly anyway.
Oh well... keep up the good work Maccas =)
P.S. if anyone would like to continue this conversation with me, on either side of the argument, feel free to add me: Zackyjack@hotmail.com
