Avon's "Flat Stomach"

avon.jpgHave you ever wished there was some pill or potion that could actually flatten your stomach?

Short of surgery, there haven't been many options to those wishing for a completely different – and practically unattainable – physique. Now there may be an answer.

Women in North Texas are buying bottles of pills by Avon called "Flat Stomach," which claim that their probiotic formula will produce good bacteria in your body that cancels out the bad, eliminating bloating and making your stomach appear flatter. But is it too good to be true?

"It's conceivable that it could work, and it may work in some people," said Dr. Stuart Spechler, a gastroenterologist at the University of Texas, Southwestern. (NBC.com).

But as with any supplement that is not FDA approved, the claims should be taken with a grain of salt. After all, there are no studies demonstrating its effectiveness. Furthermore, much of America's girth is not caused by bloating – it's caused by overeating, which leads to increased waist size.

This can only be modified up to a point by exercise, diet and lifestyle changes such as quitting excessive drinking and eating less processed food. Unfortunately, very few of us have the genetic makeup to possess perfectly flat abs.

Most likely, there will be no "quick fix" for our nation's problem with obesity. It did not appear overnight, and it will not disappear overnight – unless you happen to have the money for plastic surgery.

For most of us, a flatter stomach will come in the form of hard work and discipline.

I can't help wondering whether Avon are simply pandering to the "flat tummy" obsession.

My young daughter has a round tummy. That's because she often has food in it...

I have a very skinny friend with a muffin top. She's convinced she needs to diet because she has a little extra flab around the tum

It's true that the stomach girth is an indicator of a number of serious health problems but the idea that a pill could cure it? It is was just bloating then yes, aloe juice, apple cider vinegar, eliminating gluten etc might do it.

Good bacteria? sounds like yoghurt (acidphololus) or maybe aloe powder. Is there a list of ingredients available?

It is really sad the way these companies prey on people, and even sadder that people are gullible enough to buy it.

I'm guessing this probiotic will make people who are constipated go more often, and that will flatten their stomach a bit.

I use natren's healthy trinity but not for a flat stomach. It's to keep good bacteria in your gastro system and keep it healthy, that's it. It's better to use a live culture, thus yogurt with it or the natren because it's a live culture and must be refrigerated. Weird that they are advertising it for a flat stomach.

Just this last week, I had my weight jump up 3.5 pounds and my waistline jump up 1.5 inches. Considering I had been dieting and exercising better than most weeks, I figured it was just something gastro-intestinal going on. Sure enough, it was gone one day, just as fast as it came.

Oh, please... this is as ridiculous as any other "get thin quick" scheme. I've been taking probiotics for years. Great for getting rid of UTI's, diarrhea, and yeast infections (sorry guys, I know that was a 'cringe moment' for you), but does absolutely NOTHING for weight gain/loss.

Never seen it advertised as a stomach flattener. I guess it could work though.

It is also conceivable that putting two 25-pound plates on your belly will have the same effect. Too bad the shipping is rather expensive :-)

You know, there are people out there with IBS who start the day with a relatively flat stomach that actually does bloat up some. My mother was one of those. Before I had my babies, I was too. Just a glass of water and my pants were too tight even though I was truly a size 1. So, I know that there is a LITTLE truth in this...the problem is....the key word there....LITTLE truth.

I do believe the best way is putting in the time and discilpine into for fitness and health.

I imagine they charge 3 times the price of concoctions with similar ingredients just because of the words "flat stomach", knowing that people will be prepared to pay for it. It's possible that the pills actually work on people who are bloated yet are quite small otherwise, but my heart goes out to those who are very overweight and will spend their hard-earned money thinking this will be their cure. There are plenty of other, cheaper options for dealing with bloat, the cheapest being dietary changes, and who wants to do that when you can take a pill? Actually, I lie, the cheapest of all is the cure we use on the farm, it hasn't yet been approved for humans, but I'm sure it wont be long.

anyone with a quarter of a brain knows this is just to get people to buy the product, everything Avon sells is something that you could get a CVS for better price AND quality.
And the label says its for bloating...not weight loss. Get it right people!

"Avon claims that their probiotic formula will produce good bacteria in your body that cancels out the bad, eliminating bloating and making your stomach appear flatter."

It does work to make your stomach appear flatter because when you increase your bacteria count by ingesting probiotics, the bad bacteria are reduce and in turn, produce less gas, which in turn makes you less bloated which allows the person to have "a stomach that appears flatter."

Personaly, I'm a big girl but I also have terrible bloating as soon as I eat. I look like I'm 7 months pregnant when I eat refined or sugary foods. I now take probiotics every day and I do a bad bacteria cleansing in Spring and in Fall.

It depends on why you have a big stomach. For me, I do have a flatter stomach thanks to my probiotics but because it didn't make me skinnier.

They don't claim to help you lose weight they say :

"Supports: Digestive balance to help relieve the discomforts of bloating & gas.
With: Special probiotic blend that provides intestinal health benefits." quoted from the AVON website

You can buy more affordable and more effective probiotics at the grocery or natural food store. Look for live bacteria in the refrigerated organic section and it's good to have at least 30 million per capsule.
Careful though, start slowly, it will make you gassy in the beginning.

I have never had a flat stomach without exercise. I think swimming and yoga are the best for the flat tummy. I don’t know about this miracle drug but I have used fat burners in the past. I am concerned however that it is not FDA approved.

I don’t think that this would work on its own without proper diet and exercise.

i dont agree personally with fat burning pill things, so ya. i think the best thing to do to get a flatter belly is the old rutiens-diet, and exercise. anyways, most pills like this have been known to cause problems to some of the people who take, and/or have taken them.

I'm a AVON rep, and I'm actually pretty surprised at some of the comments on here. If you read the ad properly, you will see that it makes no claim to being a weight-loss supplement. It's merely a supplement to help with digestive health and bloating. That's where the "Flat Stomach" comes from - easing the bloating and regulating your digestive system. It makes no claims to weight loss.
Please, people...READ before you go making assumptions. This supplement isn't about weight loss - it's about gastro-intestinal health.

I love flat stomach. For me it has helped tremendously and honestly, I have not found a better combination. Some of what I have bought in other places require that you take 2-3, 2-4 times daily. It's inconvenient. However, with AVON it is once daily and for me has saved my life from the swelling discomfort that IBS tends to produce. That is why they call it flat stomach. It is becuase it helps aliviate the swelling. Thanks Avon for making such a product. It is the best I have tried so far.

actually, i've used the flat stomach pills by Avon. Every morning, I wake up with a flat stomach (no joke!) and by the time I'm ready to walk out the door (i don't eat breakfast), I look as if I just left the all you can eat buffet line. So, I started taking these in the morning and honestly, it works for me. Not to say it's a miracle drug or it will work for everyone but it's helped me. I suffer from IBS AND i have some problems with lactose intolerance and no, I don't look like I've lost 30 lbs, but I don't look and feel as bloated when taking these pills.

I started using Flat Stomach about a year ago just out of curiosity because by stomach was always puffy. In a week it began to work and my constipation dissapeared too. I forgot to re-order and in a matter of a week my puffy stomach came back. I called my Avon rep today and need to order enough bottles not to run out again...it really works.
