McDonald's Versus Subway

McDonald's New Zealand are embarking on a new 'feel-good' campaign. During two lunchtimes a McDonald's outlet will set up cameras in its kitchen and broadcast the video to onlookers outside.

"We have nothing to hide and we're happy to invite people to have a look at our practices..." said the Managing Director.

The video cameras are part of the "Take A Closer Look" campaign that (as well as print and TV advertising) will include Open Door Days. Presumably they are talking about the kitchen door.

What's in those chicken fillets?
I'm not sure how many other restaurants have gone to such lengths to convince the public of their food quality.

McDonald's is in trouble. They are facing the brunt of anti-fast food angst borne out of the obesity 'crisis'. How do McDonald's respond? by coming out with McKids Adventures DVD's (infomercials you get to pay for), and making fancier play areas. Isn't McDonald's supposed to be a food vendor?

In many countries (including New Zealand), the number of Subway outlets have now overtaken McDonald's. This has happened 'under the radar' as it were. There is now a total of over 26,000 Subway outlets worldwide (compared with McDonald's 30,000).

Will Subway become the new face of fast food?

Do we really know what is in a Subway chicken 'fillet'? Could it be the same kind of concoction as McDonald's Chicken Selects?

When Subway reaches 30,000 outlets, they will cancel each other out. Nah, I am kidding. I do not have a problem with Subway becoming the new face of fast food. The competition is healthy. I hope that in this process we will see "cleaner" fast food.

I would loce to see more people buying "Cleaner Food" at fast food places.

Interesting facts. Being a New Zealander myself, I heard something about this on the news the other day, for some strange reason I thought the whole camera thing was happening in New Yorks McDs', turns out it's in my own backyard. If McDs' are struggling here it certainly doesn't show, I don't see any closing down, and the one in my town is always full when I go past, even during school and work hours.

Subway is, in my opinion, probably one of the best choices if fast food has to be eaten, and I'm glad to see they have overtaken McDs'. I am a little dubious about the quality of their "meat" products though, and tend to choose vegetarian options if I ever go there.

A bit off-topic, the real takeout in this country has always been (and will always be) fish and chips, privately-run shops outnumber all the franchise fast-food stores put together, and a lot of them now try to offer healthier options (I guess though that not much that is deep-fried can be considered "healthy")

Subway is cool and a lot healthier than a lot of its alternatives but it's still 'fast food'
The single most effective way to reduce weight is to take responsibility for your own food and eating rather than buying it ready made all the time. That way you know what you're getting and you have more control over it.

McDonalds and Subway are both food franchises. They both don't really care about our health. This open kitchen thing is just to bring in more customers. It's still full of fat as ever.

Dietary fat isn't the enemy, ori. I know people who have lost weight and then went on to build great physiques with 65% of their calories coming from fat. Their hearts were in great shape as a result of it too. However, they ate clean, natural fats.

It's a shame that dietary fat and fat that you store on your body share the word "fat". It makes us think "oh, eating fat makes you fat". But if you just changed the name of dietary fat to taf, we would all say "oh, taf doesn't make you fat; excess carbohydrates and inactivity make you fat".

The problem with fast-food chains is processing, not fat, and maybe not even calorie count. Natural food is what creates a healthy body, even if it's fatty. Instead of asking yourself "how many calories does this have?", try "how close to its natural state is this?" or "how much processing went into making this?".

"Isn't McDonald's supposed to be a food vendor?" Heheh. That's funny.

My son loves McDonald's but many times I can't tell if he wants it because of the playground and toy he can get. After a while he doesn't ask for a hamburger when we drive by a McDonald's. He asks for a toy. All these "extras" are positive reinforcement for these kids to eat at McDonalds's. But I'm going off on a tangent here...

I am a big fan of Subway as their food is awesome and it gives me the right amount of food for having energy while staying fit. McDonalds is just a huge fast food kingdom by itself and I think it will take a lot for Subway though to become #1.

I believe Subway will take over. At least we know the salad isn't processed. The meat fillings seem good enough. McDonald's new health food phase isn't working. I hope this competition of fast food chains encourages them to stay healthy so we don't have to worry about calories and fat. I'd like to see fresh juice incorporated into their drink menu instead of Coke. Good riddance

I will eat at Subway on those occasions I'm forced to eat at a food court (about once every 8 months, since I work from home). Luckily in Brazil we have a fast-food Lebanese chain that is everywhere. Although they also sell burgers and pizza, you can get hummus and a pita, or some tabbouleh, or a beef-filled zucchini (all made at the venue, not frozen or anything) for half the price of the smallest Mc meal.

Well, although i agree there is probably a change in hands going on here, it isn't because of hard facts. McDonalds may have 'unhealthy' foods, but seriously how bad can it be? I know that sounds weird, but think about it: what grounds do people who eat there all the time have against mcd's? "Oh it makes me feel good." "Oh the food is fattening, dont feed it to me." Because of this, people say that it is impossible for other resaurants to be 'unhealthy'. People will argue that nothing at Tim Hortons is unhealthy, but thats not true. Not to mention A&W is probably just as bad as McD, but nobody cares!

It annoys me

Oh well!
