The Laser That Melts Fat?

Many weight loss programs use the phrase "melt fat". It's a ridiculous phase because nothing actually melts fat - except for lasers. Dermatologists at the Massachusetts General Hospital are experimenting with lasers that will heat up fat without harming the skin.

Using the Free-Electron Laser at selected wavelengths, scientists were able to heat the fat up, which was then broken down and excreted by the body. (bbc)
There has been much speculation about such a device over the last few years - but nothing has materialized. As yet there is no magical laser that will burn off cellulite and sub-cutaneous fat - despite many claims to the contrary.

However - even if such a laser were in existence - if you made no changes to your lifestyle, then you would simply put the fat back on again. Given current popularity trends in cosmetic procedures - whoever makes "fat melter" will become very rich indeed.

Since when do fats melt? Even if they do, where do the melted fats go or do they swim and linger around in the body. Interesting. But it may be too good to be true.
Plus, there is no magic way to get rid of our fat. Did you know that even with liposuction, they are just sucking away fats from our fat cells but the number of fat cells stays the same. The fat cells has potential to expand (and multiply) again before you know it if there is not lifestyle modifications (i.e. exercise and healthy eating) involved.

The above comment sounds like a phony.

"Since when do fats melt"? Uhh, just put some rendered lard or other animal fat in a hot pan and watch them go. or just put butter on hot toast. Any oil is a melted fat, if you put it down to a low temperature it will solidify.

To me, if sounds like if you could melt the fat, it would just cool down again and solidify, or pass into the blood stream like a normal fat does from the gut, and be reabsorbed as energy. If that were the case, it could be a useful way of 'feeding' a person from their own fat, eventually lowering fat levels (if the energy were to go to the muscles, not back to fat cells. This requires metabolism, either through exercise or just daily living, without consuming additional calories).

Fats do not normally get into the bloodstream in a pure form-- they are broken down into smaller molecular "packages" and either passed into a muscle cell for use or passed back into a fat cell for storage. If you "rendered" human fat and let that into the blood, unchanged, it would likely plug the artery and cause thrombosis, stroke, or heart attack.

Even if the laser-rendered fat stayed out of the blood, that oil has to go somewhere to be "processed," and the only other fluid available, to transport stuff around, is lymph. And if "human oil" got into the lymphatic system, it would solidify quickly, because human fat is solid at a normal human body temperature. At that point you have lumps of fat floating in lymphatic fluid, where it would probably be treated like a raging infection-- causing a massive immune response, and/or edema. You would then, presumably, have to remove the fat using lipo!

Honestly, this makes about as much sense as boiling the contents of your G.I. tract. Yes, you would absorb fewer calories that way, but you would also be quite dead!

scone: Exactly - that concerned me. If the fat cells "melted" where on earth would that broken down fat go to?

You need to have lots of kids and teach them what you are saying, then the world could maybe get a break! I am a student researcher for exercise science and nutrition and i believe that all of these quick fixes are just hurting people more than they actually are aware of...due to the fact that these supplemental drugs are not regulated by the food and drug administration...it is just a huge money maker for these professional manipulators! Keep up the good work! No one said life was easy, but given new ways to simplify tasks, people care more about money and doing the least amount of work possible that they don't care what it takes and what the end results are years down the line....i think individuals should just get up and do something outside, quit making excuses...

Actually, Meridian medical (mrdaf on the otc) has developed a laser that breaks down fat cells and allows the body to absorb dispose of the fat as waste. I'm not a doctor or a nurse but I've seen this machine in action and it works. The machine isnt for sale in North America as of yet since its in the process of being reviewed by the FDA.

In responce to Scone in this quote:

If we consume a lot of SUGAR, all that insulin changes that sugar into blood fats. These bloodfats are tryglicerides, which forms soft plaque on the arteries. Trans fats also raises tryglicerides, and the omega 6 fatty acids inflames the arteries, causing harder plaque to form.

The Meridian laser is called a LipoLaser, I had the treatments done a couple months ago and i lost about 2inches after 8 treatments. I was really skeptical when i first heard of it but then thought I would try and see if it was for real. If you can find these treatments get them!!
