How Much Coffee Should You Drink?
How much coffee? That is one of the great modern debates. The pendulum swings every few months or so. Recently there has been talk about the anti-oxidant levels in coffee.
Americans' love affair with coffee means they get more antioxidants from this drink than from any other source in their diet, a new study reports. Now, new research highlights the risk of imbibing too much caffeine.
Apparently it's a genetic thing. Some people metabolize caffeine quickly (and have a lower heart attack risk). Others have the opposite situation.
Among slow-metabolizers, those who drank two or more cups of coffee daily were at least 36 percent more likely to have a nonfatal heart attack than those who drank little or no coffee. Even higher risks were found for younger slow metabolizers — those under 50. They were up to four times more likely to have a heart attack than slow metabolizers in their age group who drank little or no coffee. So how much should you drink? The answer is, of course, individual. the co-author of the study admits "that one size does not fit all".
How do you find out if you are a fast or slow metabolizer?
For now, there's no easy way to know if you're a fast or slow caffeine metabolizer. Staying awake all night if you drink coffee in the afternoon doesn't mean you're a slow metabolizer, and a genetic test that could answer the question is used in research but is not commercially availableThat's charming. It's like Russian Roulette. Drink your coffee - but you may or may not be one of those people who will end up with a heart attack.
Moderation is the key - and so is pleasure.

Coffee is my vice, and I will continue to slowly savor every sip of every coffee.

That scares me. Especially because I'm so anxious that I think I have an irregular heart beat (probably self induced). I love coffee and try to only have one cup a day early in the morning but I can tell you it certainly is difficult for me to go without it.
Maybe I'll try to quit again. But I need some remaining vice since I've successfully rid myself of all the others.
I wish researchers could make up their mind!
ReplyTrust me, one cup of coffee a day is fine, and with the levels of antioxidants, it can also be helpful. My husband, on the other hand, drinks too much. He drinks 3+ pots (10 cup pots) a day. I have started to split his coffee with decaf.
ReplySince I am a tea drinker, my comment is for Hopeful. Trust me as a person who is old, old, researchers will never make up their minds. I've seen things be good for you, bad for you, and then good for you again. (dairy products went through this tunnel)
ReplyI tend to drink up to 6 cups of coffee a day... and I still sleep pretty soundly at night. Although usually I'm not as well rested as I am with 2 cups or less.
I'm currently on a hiatus, but I have to say the withdrawals are enough to put me off for a month or so.
Still: I would have to pin myself as a pretty fast metabolizer.
ReplyHi,
I'm a nutritionist and I always tell my client to get off the crack. Caffeine causes cravings, blood sugar surges and anxiety. eek. Why risk it?
Great article!

What tools, skills, or "replacements" do you give your clients to aid them in coming off the coffee? How does coffee cause cravings?
ReplyEvery since I started my vitamins.. I haven't had coffee since Sept. And I don't have a craving for it anymore. I get such a big energy boost, and I also drink tea, so I don't need coffee. But as a treat, I'll have a caramel frappicino at starbucks.
ReplyI've been off all caffeine for awhile now. Through my own experimentation, I learned that drinking coffee and using other products that contain caffeine, make me have cravings for food. Don't know if it's physiological or phsychological. Just know that when I quit using it, my appetite diminished.
ReplyI quit by first determining how many cups I averaged a day, then over a period of time, reducing the amount by one cup a day, until at last, I just totally quit. I had no withdrawal problems. I sleep better now too, and I had been under the impression that coffee did not affect my sleeping.
I used to drink a lot of coffee/caffeine-rich beverages and now I drink 2 cups of coffee a day. I don't think I've ever had issues with sleeping or irregular heartbeats, but I drink the coffee mainly for the taste so I often make it with half de-caf beans. My dad drinks 3 pots of the stuff a day and he doesn't ever have problems sleeping. I guess some people really can drink a lot of coffee without any negative effects.
ReplyThe problem with drinking coffee on a regular basis, is that when you don't get that drug for a day or so, you devellop the most splitting headache ! I use decaf, once in a while, and absolutely avoid drinking coffee when visiting others - coffee is NOT coffee. Here in Norway it's little more than dishwater in color and not much better in taste. When visiting France however, I do indulge in one good cup per 24 hours ... only in the Brittany region where they use 100% arabica coffee and no robusta.
ReplyI RECENTLY WENT TO DECAF.. I'VE DEVELOPED SEVERE ANXIETY, AND SWITHCHING WAS THE BEST THING I CAN DO AND NOW FEEL NORMAL AGAIN...
ReplyThe thing with any caffinated drink is you either wean yourself slowly or go cold turkey.
The headaches that occur when one goes cold turkey are for a couple of days. Promise it does get better.
After these few days it is smooth sailing (perhaps starting on a weekend so you are over the worst of it by Monday is the way to go).
I find coffee is extremely addictive and a comfort thing! I have started to mix decafe with regular and the will eliminate the caffeine altogether. this is not as hard as people think. the key to all of it is moderation anyway....that way if you skip a day, you won't suffer the headaches.
ReplyI drink 3 to 4 cups of coffee a day. I notice if I have to get blood work done and do not have coffee, i get a pounding headache. Then I rush to 7-11 for a cup. What would I do if someday I needed surgery and couldn't have coffee the day of the surgery. I can't imagine going in for surgery with a pounding headache.
Please advise
ReplyI drink about 4-5 8 oz cups of coffee
but lately when i have my coffee I tend to yawn and feel sleepy.
Its like caffeine no more got the effect on me.. kinda sad as now i got to look onto something else.
Replyshailen if you feel like that then you clearly drink alot of coffee , i used to feel the same and went on to redbull which is an amazing drink but i would'nt recommend it as i now have a reaction to caffine in the form of migraines. anyway back to my question i heard that de-cafe coffee still had caffine in , does anyone now if that is true ? by the way caffine is like any drug and should be taken seriously.when i came off caffine the side affects were aweful, it was a form of cold turkey and i dont recommend anyone else getting in to that state . thanks for your time, lee.
ReplyHi
Replyi drink about 7 to 8 cups off coffee aday and it takes me to the bathroom every cup i drink i just got started drinking coffee about 4 month's ago i don't even feel hungry anymore why is that plus i love the rush you now i do lots of things i have kids to take care house chores got to keep on moving can't be slow
I drink obscene amounts of coffee. It never gives me a buzz, or keeps me awake. I don't 'crave' it. I just enjoy it immensley. I've cold turkied myself loads, just to check my addiction, and I don't crave it at all. I just feel dissapointed I'm not drinking any.
I've had about 20 cups today, and shall be drinking more. It can't be healthy, but I don't see why I should quit. Do people honestly get side affects? I've never felt I 'needed' coffee before! Or had any headaches, etc. Weird.
ReplyCoffee coffee coffeeeee, i love coffee, i can drink 4 or 5 cups a day, but not as many as what some of my fellow coffee lovers drink, One thing i have noticed though and this may be a personal side effect, is that if i drink too much my head really hurts the next day. I unfortunately went through a phase where i was addicted to coca cola, i drank a 3litre bottle in the space of 2 hours after work, every single day, now i drink a glass of the stuff and my head hurts...badly. Coffee is good for you no doubt about it, research proves that. However too much does maek your heart beat quicker and irregularly. I am proof of that lol. But still nothing beats a cup of coffee with a muffin in the morning.
ReplyI have been drinking coffee and caffine enriched sodas for more than a decade. All of a sudden I started having major skipping of my heart, major pounding, and felt like a fish flip flopping in my chest. I am a 35 year old woman. I didnt realize at first that it was caffine causing these problems. Coming from a family of doctors I started doing my research. Obviously I have a slow caffine metabolisum but I have not changed what I drank in the past 7 years and did not suffer any ill effects until the past month. So beware that these toxins can build up over time. I am now on my way towards recovery. I instantly cut out the soda and was only drinking 1-2 cups of coffee a day. I instantly felt an improvement although Not a complete recovery. I am now quitting altogether. Beware as well that some foods also contain caffine i.e. chocolate. I am writing this in hopes of helping someone else to realize their symptoms. Good luck.

ReplyYou should try to cut down coffee to just one or two cups per day. Coffee is an adrenal stimulant HELL! People that are addicted is because their adrenals are totally out of sync and off key. Same goes for coca cola and other stimulants as well as smoking. You will get a high then a massive low from these afterwards and so the cycle goes on.
ReplyI love my coffee im only 21, i drink about 30 - 40 cups of cofee a day, either nescaf or kenco, im addicted to the stuff. Ive tryed decafinated but i dont like it should i quit?.
Reply30 - 40 cups a day? If you're serious... 35 8oz cups of coffee is about 3.5 grams of caffeine. That's just 3 times less than the commonly quoted toxic level of 10 grams. It's still a lot, and I'm just guessing on the size of each cup.
I was at over ten cups myself for years, and developed some of the symptoms of caffeine overdose - cardiac arrhythmia, flushing, facial tics. I've dropped down to a 2-3 cups a day and don't have any of the symptoms, and am sleeping better too. And, amazingly enough, my sweat doesn't smell of coffee any more! ^_^
You sound pyschologically hooked on coffee, which is not a good thing.
ReplyI'm a college student, and no one knows their caffiene like college students... Sean sounds like everyone I know. Except thats they all add in some no-doz to the mix. It's all the rage to play drinking games with esspresso shots instead of liquor.
ReplyPersonally, I drink mostly tea (2-4 cups a day), I gave up coffee when I started sounding like Sean. Go me, almost anything is fine in moderation, whether that be caffiene, alcohol, or chocolate.
It is interesting that I probably have experienced all the comments above from drinking excessive amounts of coffee (10-15 for me), excessive urinating, cardiac arrhythmia, headaches when cutting down to quiting.
I now drink 8 oz of espresso that I make at home in the morning. Many symptoms have gone away (especially the urinating frequently).
For a 70 year old person I can't say coffee is bad for you just do it in moderation
Replyi think i might be drinking too much coffee lol. I can easily have 3-4 cups of the great brown stuff before school, i could also ahve about 3 while at schol and to top it off i can have anything up to 8 ish when i get back from school. I'm only 18 (i'm not addicted to it at all-i went a week without coffe last week. i dont have any of the effects that caffine is suppose to have aswell! I only drink it for the taste.
ReplyI drink up to 3, 8-10 cup "pots" each day, i havent tried to quit and may not, but i do plan to cut down to about 2 cups a day, i have all those symptoms everyone is talking about, and to be honest it didnt dawn on me about the coffee until the last few days, i just thought i was falling apart!! hehe. I am high-strung, tall and skinny with a high metabolism, prolly why i aint dead yet..!
ReplyI'm not sure what the big deal here about coffee however, I'm 50 years old. Been drinking coffee daily since I was 8 years old - This partly because there was no money for much else in the house. Anyway, I drink 30-40 cups (8oz +) a day. I have a 40 cup urn and I make it in the morning and by night, I start another. For the record - My Blood Pressure ranges usually beween 117/77 to about 120/88. My Heart rate at rest is about 59 beats a min. The bottem line is..What may be just fine for my body may not be for someone else. We all have different limits but I feel pretty certain that Coffee is probably one of the least harmful things one could eat..BY the Way - I smoke 2 packs of cigarettes a day too..What the hell huh? You got to die of something! :)
ReplyI stopped drinking coffee since 6 months, I've noticed that I have very fast heart beats when I drink coffee.
ReplyLast week, I drink a cup of coffee at work and I couldn't do anything for 3 hours, my heart beats come very fast and my hands begin to shake little bit.
I love coffee but I have not to drink it :(
I hadn't visit a doctor for that, do you think it is required?
^
ReplyI forget to say that I am 24 years old.
Dang it! I've been looking for an answer to how much coffee an average American drinks in a year. No, I'm not on a diet. This is homework. =P
Replyi drink at least 5 cups a dayis that really that bad reading what can happen
ReplyI have always totally enjoyed my rich, dark coffee (about 3 cups) in the morning, and added coffee breaks at work with the coffee drinkers. At least we can drink coffee in the break room and not have to lurk outside like the cigarette smokers. But recently I have developed strange heartbeats (yes, the fish flopping kind). Well I thought I was drinking 3 cups - actually added it up and it was more. I'm working first on changing brands, then withdraw to 1-2 cups x 24 hours. Listen up! Anyone who drinks 30 cups of "anything" (even water) is harming their kidneys, which must process everything we put into our bodies. That much liquid also causes a type of water overload on the brain. Children on mega bottles of diluted milk can suddenly seizure, even die. Everything has consequences, so moderation is always key.
ReplyI never had coffe till age of 29 , now I started from last 10 years in the afternoon one cup.
ReplyIs one cup ok for health or should be replaced with tea (stong tea two dips in hot water for less than 10 seconds).
Can any one suggest is one coffe ok please.
