Janet Jackson and the Yo-yo Diet

Despite the glamorous photo shoots and provocative album covers, Janet Jackson is the quintessential yo-yo dieter. It's easy to point the finger at celebrities. They have access to the best personal trainers, chefs, any gym equipment money can buy, and even cosmetic surgery. However, even the richest and most popular person still has to exercise personal responsibility - just like the average Joe.

People see the pictures of chiseled abs and rock-hard physiques - and believe that it's a permanent reality. So apparently Janet Jackson has gained some weight (so what), but what is ironic is the massive transformation she will undergo for an album release.

In preparation for the planned release of her next album this spring, she's resumed workouts with her longtime personal trainer Tony Martinez. Janet jogged, power-walked and pushed through grueling lunges and squats during a recent slimming session on an L.A. beach.

"She's working with Tony again and he has always worked for her in the past. By the time her record is released, she'll be thin again," the source said.

Welcome to the world of fakeness - where public appearances must be thin and 'perfect' - but privately this image is impossible to sustain.
"She has battled this problem since she was a kid. She'll go months eating whatever she can get her hands on, and then she'll go months eating just salads and fruits and drinking Evian water," said a family source.
That kind of yo-yo diet phenomenon is common. If only we could settle for the middle ground, and take a moderate approach to eating year round.

When it comes to celebrities - they are a brand - and they know that in the world of brand-marketing, image is everything.

What goals have you set for your image? Are these goals realistic and sustainable? Or are you setting yourself up for an endless cycle of success and failure?

UPDATE May 2006: Janet Jackson claims a 70 pound weight loss, She has been using gourmet food delivery service "Fresh Dining" to have perfectly proportioned meals delivered (total daily calories 1000-1400. 5-6 days per week she has worked with a personal trainer for 1-2 hours.

Who doesn't want to lose weight and look good? That was my goal at a younger age. Because time had lapsed and the goals were set aside I was slightly overwhelmed by my lack of care. Back to setting goals, one step at a time. My reasons have changed. Now I want to live longer, be in less pain, regain energy, and keep my mind sharper. I can't do that with a 100# sack of potatoes on my back (scale). Time to use behavior modification.
It works for me if I work it.

I love Janet and I totally understand her. We as fans dont realize all the work she has to put up with to balance her career, appealing the press and her fans and staying thin, I mean really think about it.. try doing all of that alone without including her family problems (Michael) and you will realize that all that stress can make you forget about staying super skinny and im not saying Janet is fat cause shes not I think she has a great body. So always try putting yourself in their shoes before anthing

You really have to understand where she's coming from. I don't blame her if she wants to get in the best shape for her album release. Gaining 30 or 40 lbs. is not obese and the skin and muscles still have memory. In fact, the album is a great goal to strive for. That is her goal. That is her reality. It's like killing two birds with one stone. If private individuals would set goals for themselves, they might be more motivated to stay in shape. Some will criticise no matter what you do. She just happens to be an international superstar. Janet always bounces back and comes thru for herself and her fans. People love a great comeback too. If it works for you, do it!

Janet Jackson to me, is unhealthy. She's been up and down with her weight for years. I'm really concerned about her heart. She needs to understand that she need to choose one weight. I remember in 1999, it was reported that she was taking diet pills and she had heart damage. If she needs help on maintaning her figure, she needs to seek that attention before she's in a grave. It is also reported that she gets liposuctioning done. She could be taking that money and using it to take care of her parents, since they lost their home in Dec, because of big brother Michael and his constant loans.

She damn near 40, that woman is allowed to backslide sometimes. But If she wants to loose weight for an album, that's no difference then ladies wanting to loose weight for their wedding. Everyone has a goal. What's sad is the young girls who are already skinny becoming boney for no reason at all, looking sick.

Its been said before, Janet (and Michael)is an inspiration. Its true she's a number 1 yo-yo dieter, but she's trying to overcome so many struggles that in effect result in her eating. The same thing with Michael, and if it sounds odd then so be it, but he's equally as concerned about his weight b/c he has to rely on his two images-being a Jackson and being his own Michael Jackson. He'll just flat-out not eat or fast on juice for weeks to keep to 115 lbs and then pass out from exhaustian and lack of vitamins and such.. Janet has an eating disorder due to chronic depression, where she'll just eat when she's sad.. or bored and so on. When she's talked about it, I know she understands what she does, and she's trying to curb it. I just turned 17 in Dec. and I've had the same damn problem as her since i was young (Im not 'fat' anymore, but I should be 'skinnier' as I want to become a singer and then a model too..) I've gone through it all, bulemia, just accepting I was fat and gorging myself, Im getting over anorexia, pills, drugs to lose weight, not a fun thing to do, but now I'm trying to eat healthy. And she's the only one that I can relate too, we both understand deeply that our image is our product and once it rots we'll tend to fade away (as sad as it sounds). Above all other things, she's a JACKSON-where thier beautiful 'image' is paramount, as 'superficial' as it sounds- Its naturally associated with the Jackson lineage. Dont get on her for that, people who dont have this mentality or problem to deal with (not u all, but the society calling ppl 'fat' and 'scary/ugly looking')need to learn how to act like human beings. Another point to the Jacksons who understand where we're comming from.

I totally agree with Nina-Marie. And Im sorry for your long hard road, but it makes me proud too. I'm going through the same thing now and I'm 17 too. I love Janet no matter what she looks like, and all the Jacksons for that matter forever. They'll always be accepted in my eyes. She's a role-model, despite what few other jackasses who haven't gone what she's gone through will say. Nina, you won't fade, the Jacksons are already part of our history that will remain there for future generations to learn about forever-more. Don't beat yourself up, you'll be alright. ;)
Lots of love and compassion,

I think that Janet Jackson is still one of the most beautiful women alive. Yea she has gained some weight, but so what? I have been totally in love with her ever since her CONTROL album in 1986, when I was only 15 years old. I know that she will be able to lose the weight that she needs to lose before the release of her next album, but it's not fair that she has to be criticized like this just for gaining weight like any other human being. To me, Janet is beautiful no matter what. I love you Janet! Keep doing your thing.

To the underminded white guy, Janet is a very amazing lady, you are just so confuse why she has a hot body. Well let me tell you she works out and she cares about her apperance and does't just sit around and be a couch potatoe like other woman do she is not a bitch for having a body that you want. I know how it is I am not races but look face it some Black woman have a shape and that was Gods doing. Would you call a white girl a FAT BITCH with a body that amazing like JANET. (Nope) so accept the fact that you just want her and you will never get her.

Don’t get me wrong I like some of Janet’s work, but nothing that she is saying is for real. We are all human including celebrities, just be straight and tell people the truth. She was going through a bad period in her life and gained weight as a result this. I would have more resepect, encouragment, and moviation if she said something like that. I think she had liposunction. I have been told by a good doctor friend of mine that you can have a complete body done, and it only take around a month to heal. Surgery will take care of the loose skin & fab. She probaly lost some of the weight and the rest was through sugergy removal. I don’t care that she has a personal trainer and eating healthy. Its impossbile to lose that much weight in 4-months!!!. I did it once, worked out 5 days a week (2 of 5 days with a personal trainer), and my food intake was 800-1000CS a day. It took 10 months for me to get the weight off. I also don’t buy the story of gaining the weight for a movie role. No one would put themselves through all that weight gain for a movie role, when she could have just wore a fat body suit like Eddie Murphy did in the Nutty Professor. This is just not real. PS, I think they did do a go job airblushing her new pictures. They are not real too.

Janet's weight loss is a testament to the illusion of thin=happy in Western culture. I think great, she's thin again, but how frustrating must it be to constantly have the scrutiny of the entire world call you fat and ugly or essentially worthless b/c you are not thin. I know this is cliche but it strikes me as an issue of oppression in a system about getting a few folks rich. It's not just about women either. Who makes money when people 'try' to get thin. Gyms, diet pill peddlers, magazines etc. And they make billions. Imagine a world where people didn't think they were so fat and therefore inadequate as human beings in some way. What would we be doing with our time?
Secondly, it is complete bullshit that, many times celebs get thin and talk about they did it by working out 10-15 hrs wk, and eating under 1500cal. Obviously it is the image they have to sell. And that's all it is an image. Realistically, a single mother working 9-12hrs a day who is low income can't afford that time at the gym or barely has time to cook. And b/c in North America our lives are so fast it's hard to find that time to cook. Let alone get access to healthy whole foods. When your at the mall and are hungry there isn't a Whole Foods stall you can go grab a DECENTLY priced real organic (therefore nutritionally packed) green salad. No, it's McDonald's salads with nutritionally void iceberg lettuce, and genetically modified pesticide drenched tomatoes.
And with that, I am done ranting my friends. Thank you for reading.

You all are some big haters. Just because someone can succeed in weight loss doesn't mean that anyone else cant. Janet has been in the business for a long time and she still is as pretty in the face as she always been. If anything she gain that weight because she is happy to be in a loving relationship with someone who cares for her.
Stop hating on the one successful black family in modern American history. Despite what the media tries to portray.
We get so bored and unhappy with our lives we cant wait to see someone (famous) supposedly having hard times in their lives. I said it before stop being haters (smile)

Give the woman credit... she is beautiful, everyone women that I know wants to look good and feel good about herself and Janet knows she looks amazing when she is skinny, but she is like over half of the American population when things are going bad... people eat and then finally feel bad and do something about it.

She is a kind hearted person and she is human... let her be that way.

She gained the weight for a movie role she was going to do. The movie conflicted with her contractual obligations and upcoming album, so she opted out and lost the weight.

At least that's what's been reported, and it's not really hard to believe. Hell, even fat Janet looks decent. Hard to believe she's 40. She looks not a day over 30.

Janets beauty aside, and I am not slamming her, but do those PR people think we're idiots? IMHO JJ s PR people are doing some propoganda ...because she doesnt look like she weighed in at 160lb in those photos listed as the weight she gained before for her 'movie' role. I well aware of what that weight is, and it is NOT that heavy of a look, which is a size 14 jeans typically. Janet Jackson was NOT a size 14 in those photos she was more like a size 22 or 24 and probably weighed in at 220 or 240lb it looked like as I said, IMHO.
Of course, I'm sure for her to list her weight as over 200 lb BEFORE this weight loss would have been a KOD in Hollywood, land of the skinny beee hind. But I'll hand it to her...shes worked her butt off coz She's definately lost MORE than 70 lb!!!!!
Same thing with Kirstie Alley who as well looked to have weighed more than was listed officially in her weight loss. (Puhleeze look at those before and after photos and look at a few typical sized women around you in everyday life!)
They both are to be commended for their hard work in weight loss if that's what they wanted to do, But for the record...
Big girls got it going on too~

I SAW JANET ON THE OHPRA SHOW TODAY AND I MUST SAY THAT THE OLDER SHE GETS, THE MORE SHE LOOK LIKE HER SISTERS REBE AND LATOYA. THE JACKSON FAMILY HAVE TOLD US SO MANY LIES THAT IT WAS HARD SEEING PAST HER LIES TO EVEN CARE ABOUT HER NEW SONG, WHICH SOUNDS LIKE BUBLE GUM MUSIC. WHEN YOU ARE WORTH MILLIONS OF DOLLARS AND YOUR HIP HOP BOYFRIEND IS WORTH JUST AS MUCH, YOU CAN AFFORD THE BEST TRAINERS AND CHEFS IN THE WORLD. RICH PEOPLE HAVE NO EXCUSE TO BE FAT OR OVER WEIGHT. EVEN OHPRA HAS LOST WEIGHT AGAIN THIS SEASON. THESE TWO SISTAS ARE KILLING THEMSELVES SLOWLY BY YOYO DIETING. OPERA AND JANET BOTH SHOULD HAVE MADE A PACK TO STAY ONE SIZE AND STOP THIS ROLLOER COASTER DIETING. ITS SAD TO SEE TWO POWERFUL SISTAS SUCH AS THEM DO THIS TO THEIR HEALTH. THEY BOTH LOOK GOOD FOR NOW BUT THEY HAVE TO REALIZE THAT THEY HAVE THE FAT GEAN AND THEY ARE GOING TO ALWAYS HAVE TO WORK AT IT TO STAY THIN. THEY BETTER LEARN FROM LUTHER VANDROSS. I HOPE THAT JANET HURRY UP AND MARRY JERMAINE DUPREE, BECAUSE AT AGE 40 HER BIOLOGICAL CLOCK ONLY HAS ONLY A FEW TICS LEFT. "MORE POWER TO THEM."

I agree with the other poster about yo-yo dieting. It's not the way to go and very unhealthy. I believe that large framed women look ugly when they become too small. Star jones and Missy Elliot are prime examples. They just don't look right? Their head looks huge on the new and improved small, petite bodies. Or like the girl from the Parkers that got surgery. More people need to be proud of they way they look and it should only be about health issues. If your BMI is on mark and a doctor give you a clean bill of health, then there is not much else to do. You know you can be 10-20lbs overweight according to your weight chart, but be healthier than someone that's a perfect size 4. Either being under or overweight causes health issues, and that's why we need to focus on.

Let's not confuse dieting and exercising for weight loss with living a joyous, healthy lifestyle. Celebrities attract our attention for various reasons, but they have little to do with us. Janet Jackson has to look a certain way for her album shoot. Tom Hanks has to become emaciated for Castaway. George Clooney has to gain 40 pounds for Syriana. That's their jobs.

The real question is not, what's up with Janet, but "What's up with us?" As long as we confuse weight loss with health, we'll be stuck with crazy and dangerous and frustrating yoyo diets. We'll be easy prey for sleazy marketers, for low-carb lies and twilight Zone madness, for blood type hocus-pocus and portion control torture.

If you aim for health, you'll achieve a body any celebrity would envy. If you aim for weight loss, you'll forever chase your tail. It's not a criticism, just a fact.

The solution is both incredibly simple and, for many people, unbelievable: stop eating processed foods and cut way back on the animal products. Learn how to eat like humans are meant to eat: fruits and vegetables, beans, raw nuts and seeds, and whole grains.

When my www.FitFam.com clients begin to transition their diets away from processed foods, meats and dairy, the comment I hear most often is, "I can't believe how easy it is to feel good this way." Pounds drop off, cholesterol plummets, and they get in touch with a level of health and energy they didn't know was possible.

So let's spend our energy and our money chasing something worthwhile - the reality of vibrant health - rather than the false promise of diet-driven happiness.
