Looking for a Healthy Dessert?
Is there such a thing as a healthy dessert? The only thing that comes to mind is a fruit salad - although even the tinned kind often come loaded with sugary syrups. The World's Healthiest Foods has a collection of over 100 "quick" recipes - including desserts.

These recipes aren't so much about counting carbs and calories - but about exploring natural foods that are rich in minor nutrients (think Omega 3 fatty acids, vitamins). Dessert is most definitely an 'in-moderation' meal - and even then must be balanced with an appropriate portion-size for the dinner meal. Dessert is the sort of thing that you would not habitually eat, but is nice to have when having someone round for dinner.
Here are the options from The World's Healthiest Foods:
- 10 Minute Fresh Berry Dessert with Yogurt & Chocolate
- 5 Minute Watermelon Frappe
- Apple Tart
- Apricot Compote
- Apricot Tart
- Baked Apple
- Blackberry Tart
- Blueberry, Peach Crisp
- Fresh Figs with Orange, Ginger Sauce
- Fresh Peaches with Blueberries & Yogurt
- Healthy Chocolate Mousse -non dairy
- Pineapple, Orange, Papaya Salad
- Very Berry Delight - non dairy

Those sound yummy! I'll have to try a few of those. I definitely try to avoid most traditional desserts as they do contain mostly empty calories and usually no nutrients. I tend to typically have fresh fruit for dessert and it definitely satisfies my sweet tooth.
ReplyI tend to stick with my protein, carbs and fat at each meal and snack plan. I have found combining chocolate whey protein with muscle milk (sorry about mentioning the brand) in equal amounts with a very small amount of soy milk will make a great pudding like desert. This can be combined with fruit and walnuts and is quite good. It is also high in good quality protein.

ReplyI think that one should have at least one food a day where health isn't the main consideration for eating that food. By all means, eat it in small portions, but treat foods, in a balanced diet, shouldn't need to be healthy. If you've already gotten your vitamins and minerals for the day through the rest of your diet, nutrient dense foods for dessert aren't going to provide any more assistance to your body's processes than so called 'empty calories' (except perhaps a handful more antioxidants). Trying to be 'healthy' in every single morsel that goes into one's mouth is almost orthorexic.
ReplyThat said, these desserts look yummy.
I'm with Claire in her opinion on treat foods. And I love the word "orthorexic"! Couldn't find it in my Oxford but I think I can divine the meaning. Great post, Claire.
ReplyAnd don't forget that yummy food can still be healthy in it's own respect. I love fruit-based desserts and I think it's a good compromise...angel food cake with strawberries on it is a nice end to a meal and much better for you than say, cheesecake.
ReplyThese look delicious! Thanks for sharing the link. I have a hard time turning down dessert, so I don't usually make it, but these look like good options for the occasional splurge.
ReplyI *love* sweet dessert type stuff, so my afternoon snack is always something "desserty", like fruit and yogurt with protein powder, or protein pudding (sugar-free, fat-free chocolate pudding mix made with skim milk and extra chocolate whey protein powder).
For dessert after a meal, the only one I'll eat is sugar-free jello. If I'm really craving something, like a brownie or apple pie, I'll make a whole-wheat, low-fat, sugar-free version of it and have it after a no-carb meal.
I have stuff like real chocolate mousse or ice cream once every 2 months or so, but I couldn't keep a decent weight if I had them more often.
ReplyIt looks delicious.

ReplyGreat topic. I'd like to throw one into the mix. Check out Laloo's Goat Milk Ice Cream (www.laloos.com)
It's got half the fat and calorie content as the traditional ice cream vendors' products without losing anything in the taste category. The stuff is really great. You can't tell the difference. Deep Chocolate is my favorite small indulgence. And the nutritional values make it one of the most guilt free desserts ever!
ReplyGreat i am a skool kid at skool for this porject yummy
