Lose Weight - Market It and Make Money
How many times can you tell a story of weight loss?
The number of weight loss books that have been published is simply amazing. I have been privileged to have read (and been alerted to) a number of inspiring weight loss stories.
Writing is a great therapy. Many people who recover from (or triumph over) a major issue in their lives take great satisfaction in writing about it. And so they should - transforming yourself, and overcoming the challenges that come with it, is something to take pride in.
But then comes the marketing - and at this point even the most altruistic of motives can take a bruising. Many authors write their story, get it published, and often sell just a handful of copies. Some even give away their story hoping to inspire and encourage others.
Others still, are looking to carve out their niche in that lucrative diet industry. The story goes like this:
- I got fat
- I tried lots of things get slim
- I eventually found that healthy diet in moderation (and exercise) over a long period of time made me lose the fat.
- During this time I faced numerous challenges, highs and lows.
These stories are inspiring - but could you (or would you) build your financial empire on this? Work the media well enough and such a thing may happen (albeit rarely) - but how many times can you market and sell a concept that never really changes?
This week I had an email from a person who had made a remarkable transformation in their lives. However they did not want to tell me any details as it may "affect their marketing". I salute this person's achievements in their lives - but am left feeling slightly bewildered. I don't want to steal anyone's thunder.
It's amazing how fat loss has become a business.
Think of the conversations:
"So, what do you do for a living?"
"Oh, I lose weight"
"Sounds like a good job!"
"Yeah, the hours are flexible, but it's tiring work"
Look at Susan Powter... her book Stop the Insanity was the first diet book I ever read. So much of it seemed to be sound. Then she turned out to be a loon. A shame.
ReplyI guess my "story" was kind of similar, except that I didn't "get fat", I always was fat. And I didn't try a huge number of things to get thin...mostly I was just ignorant about how to be healthy. I will say that losing weight was hard work, but it didn't make my life perfect either. It just made me healthier, thinner, and happier. People wouldn't want to read a book by me...it wouldn't tell them that losing weight will solve all your problems. Because it won't.
ReplyOr, Pretend You Lost Weight and Wear Loose Clothes - Market It and Make Money - like Dr. Phil and Dr. Weil
Or - Get Fat and Famous - Loose Weight and Market It and Make Money - Then Get Fat Again - like Oprah and Richard Simmons

ReplyWhat happened to Susan Powter? I liked her...
ReplyI would like Know if somebody speak spanish, because some things I can't understand what mean. Thankyou.
ReplyLosing weight will definitely not solve all the problems you face. On the other hand, it is also a question of mental health.
Feeling better, you feel mentally stronger. Exactly that will give you a boost to keep going on.
Let's face it: after a while, it's not any longer about simply "losing weight". It is also a way of life.
And then about writing a book and market it: if you can do so, why won't you? Your story won't save other people's overweight, but it can be very inspiring after all...
ReplyWell.. I wouldn't say that the job is weight loss period. I agree with the previous poster that it's more about mental health and people to don't put the two together and they should! If it's only about a special pill that makes you lose weight, then you will have to take that pill FOREVER, because once you stop, the weight comes right back, or you lose motivation. That's why the yo-yo diets will never go out of style since they have been introduced. Until more people start looking into the root of the problem and not looking for a quick solution, then we will have alot more happy people in the world today.

i hear what you are saying about "how everyones story is the same." but, i have to say my story is close ,except with a little twist. im 5'7" and not to long ago i weighed an astonishing 260lbs. thats a lot of weight for somebody my height. so, i started a "diet," and did very well, i ended up getting down to 137lbs, in less than two years. the only real downside was the excess skin. and unfortunately im not a surgery type of person, so i had to figure something out, and i did. my current weight is 147lbs,i have very, very little excess skin, actually my body is now pretty tight and for the first time in my life iam comfortable with taking my shirt off in front of people, and going to the beach.
