Fat Burning Wetsuit: The Vacunaut

Actress Anna Friel apparently lost weight by using a fat burning "wetsuit".

The Vacunaut
Imagine wearing that
at the gym

She told Grazia magazine: "I wear this space-age wetsuit that wires me up to a suction pump as I walk a treadmill."
But don't be fooled into thinking a vacuum cleaner and PVC all-in-one could produce the same result. The 'Vacunaut' or Stomach Fat Killer, as it's better known, is a very clever hi-tech alternative to liposuction.

At first I thought it was satire - but apparently not. There is a vendor in the UK that promotes "vacunaut training". The site claims:
* three times more fat loss from the stomach area than with other fat burning methods
* reduction of 1-2 trouser sizes in just 12 sessions
* immediate long lasting results
* abdominal muscle training without the backache

I'm sorry - but I cannot take this seriously.

I agree. More resistance will always equal more calories burned, but I'd rather add an extra 5 mins to the treadmill instead of looking like a scuba freak. ;)

Ugh, gross. What's the suction pump for? Sucking up your sweat? Fat is not going to melt out of your pores, no matter how hard you work out. It sounds curiously like the "fat-melting" Swedish soap that my biochem prof showed us an ad for. Completely far-fetched and utterly ridiculous.

It probably just ensures that your intestinal tract stays emptier due to being compressed every day...

I have actuallly done a course of vacunaut sessions and have had fab results. When i saw the newspaper i was a bit worried so went straight to my trainer but she explained it to me. The expert has been given the wrong science to comment on.
The vacunaut encourages the fat from the stomach to be the primary fuel to be burnt off by the muscles through the increased blood circulation caused by the vacuum therapy.
There is no fat sucked out or broken down in sweat or anything else that isn't possible!
It was explained when i started my course you don't lose more fat than just going on the treadmill but from where you want - I have lost it from where i want - my stomach.

Any recommendations for places in Dublin? I train daily and cannot seem to loose the spare tyre around my stomach area- I would love to try it?

It does sound very far fetched and people who are considersing using Hypoxi or vacunaut training systems should be sceptical right?
Although the medical experts have expressed concern on the physiology of this treatment they have been mislead on the actual way it works. The fat is not sucked out through a hose quite right this is far fetched. Instead the blood is directed towards the surface of the skin, therefore carrying oxygen, fat cells do not do well in oxygenated areas as all experts will agree. The fatty tissue is then metabolised and transported to the working muscle that acts like a furnace and utilizes this as energy therefore yes, we are burning fat in those stubborn hard to target areas. When we do normal exercise, blood flow always follows the same rule, it goes to where it is needed the most, into the muscle tissue to provide oxygen which is away from the skin and therefore ineffective at burning the fat in stubborn areas such as the hips, thighs, buttocks and stomach.Being from a sports science and nutritional background we were as sceptical as everyone should be. Over the four years we have been operating not once have we had to refund due to poor results. Of course these are not miracle machines but they are fantastic at what they do, couple this with balanced nutrition and normal exercise the results are truly great.

Ah, I see...so it works by increasing circulation in peripheral blood vessels that are in the adipose tissue. I agree that blood goes to the muscles that need the energy mainly, but if you are doing cardiovascular exercise, your heart rate should be increased enough to provide excellent circulation everywhere. I am a distance runner and I can honestly say that intense cardiovascular exercise results in a very lean body with no "stubborn fat". So I'll take my running shoes as an alternative to a vacuum suit any day.

not trying to sell it to you! just explaining. Women pre-disposition to childbirth naturally accumulate fat cells around hip, bum and thighs, us guy's who do not have the pleasure of childbirth! accumulate excess around our midline.
Most of the population cannot carry out intense cardio workouts or run a marathon.
Next time you finish a workout place your hand on your thighs/stomach and it will feel cold to touch, this is because the blood supply has gone to the muscle tissue no matter how well conditioned you are, therefore, we are not burning fat in these poorly circulated areas.

There are other ways to promote peripheral bloodflow, though...ways that work just as well as any vacuum pump. By keeping your body covered in cooler temperatures, you prevent the heat loss that causes your peripheral vessels to constrict. Any runner will tell you that in cooler/cold weather, it is imperative to keep yourself covered to minimize heat loss. In the summer, after a workout, my entire body is usually pretty darn warm everywhere. Then again, that could also be because my thighs/stomach are not covered in a thick layer of fat. So I suppose if you don't want to run a lot, you could try this vacunaut training, but it looks awfully cumbersome and uncomfortable.

While I'm not questioning it would work, wouldn't it work just as well as say, those old plastic girdles people used to wear to exercise? That would keep circulation to the area too, by making you sweat there.

Its not something I look forward to (But neither do i look forward to the gym!) But it def isn't something i dread its actually a nice feeling on my stomach like bubble wrap popping on my stomach - it gets me walking and its getting results so i'm happy. My partner said Mr Vain in Mens Health has wrote about it this month for men!

Reply

Jan the girdles are similar to those black plastic bin liners that footballers used to train in, which, we know now to be almost barbaric!
this method as you rightly say does encourage heat, however, this promotes fluid loss rather than fat loss.
As the body undergoes exercise it's built in cooling system opens the pores which secretes fluid onto the skin as it hits the outside temperature it has a cooling effect on the skin.(these are the waste products from exercise that build up and need to be disposed of so the muscle can continue to work optimally).

Hi everyone I'm a personal trainer from London and I can so relate to how you all feel, so I went and tried this miracle machine and I have to conclude that its fantasic!!! There's not much to me so I also took along my boyfriend (who needs a little work on the old spare tyre!!!). After 12 sessions my boyf is looking great, he's gone down a trouser size and in total has lost 4 inches. As for myself, I feel my abdominals look more defined and the sessions made me buzz; its actually quite addictive. The whole science of fat burning has not changed at all, its exactly the same, the way this machine works is that it manipulates the blood supply to improve the area's which usually have a decreased blood cirrculation and skin temp with conventional exercise. The proof is definately in the pudding, try it for yourself!!!!

I would love to try this out. It all makes sence. There is a logical science to it. My biggest problem is.....when will it be available in Canada and the USA. I ask since I live in Vancouver, BC Canada. I would love to go to a Gym in Vancouver and try the Program. I have changed my diet. I have worked out until I was blue in the face. But I can't get rid of the damn spare tire around my middle. I have some minor back problems so my ability to do crunches is limited. Since I water ski for fun, climbing into this suit is not a big deal if I can get results. I would even be willing to drive across town to give this a try. Anyone got some suggestions?

Hi all,

I'm not a personal trainer so I don't make any claims for the science, just my own experience: I am a designer, I work at a computer about 16-18 hours a day and for years now I've been too busy to attend the gym regularly so while the rest of my body is prety much as it should be my 'spare tyre' has put on a little weight.

I went to the Vacunaut website and used their retailer-locator to find a local machine at a gym near me and I've only been to my first few sessions but I'm dropping centimeters off my waist like stripping off clothes, and yes, I've been going to the gym 3 days a week for the last month so I don't think of this as an alternative, just an enhancement.

I'll let you know when I finish the course.

i live in wales, can you post a list of places in north wales where you can use, Vacanaut?

Reply
Janette

I've used this and I think it is absolutely fab. I lost 2 stone in 2 months and lost it all in the right places. It is quiet costly but it certainly beats the gym. I will definately be using it again when needed.

Hold up a minute, before you all start jumping on the band wagon. I HAVE tried this machine and it left me with awful bruises due to the suction pads within the wetsuit. Take a look at them before you put the suit on. I would recommend to anyone that something like Power Plate is a much better option...you don't look like a fool in the gym, don't sweat like a pig and it is much safer. I did my course in London and after complaining about the bruises was not offered anything in the way of compensation which leads me to believe the company is rubbish. Also, I believe Anna Friel actually retracted her statement regarding the machine after the company had made false claims...it was in a magazine a while back now. At the end of the day, the reason you lose weight with this machine is because you are training in a wetsuit, anyone with half a brain can come to the conclusion that you will lose more fluid if you wear more clothes, footballers have been known to cover parts of their bodies with plastic bags to help them lose more weight, so this is nothing new! nothing beats the traditional, safe, training methods and there is Never a shortcut to good health.

Having done a vacunaut course I can say that the results are long term. If you lost water weight then as soon as you drank water and went back to your normal routine you would pile the weight back on. I haven't found this to be the case.

My consultant explained how it works to me and encourages you to drink lots of water. Basically there is nothing like it out there so you cannot compare it to say Power plate which uses vibration rather than air pressure. They are completely different machines.

Fitness Freak - did your consultant give you an undersuit to go under the main suit? I had an all in one lycra outfit which was my own personal one.

Hazel

I note the negative comment in the main are from people who havent actually tried Vacunaut. I must admit I myself was sceptical.

The suit is a bit of a pain to wriggle into(you definitly need a special undersuit not shorts and T shirt underneath the suit, otherwise your shorts ride up and you get small sores on your legs from the suit rubbing, plus you can get into the suit a lot easier with the undersuit on).The smaller you get, the smaller the suit gets so it doesnt get any easier to put on!! The exercise is moderate which is great if you are not the aerobic type.

So far I have had five forty minute sessions, and I have noticed my stomach is much flatter and my hips much more slimline. I have dropped from a UK size 18 to a UK size 16 in those five sessions and my trainer seems confident that by the time I have completed my 14 scheduled sessions I will be a UK size 14. I was measured after the first session and had lost 4cm's from hips waist & stomach combined. I don't think they will measure me again for another couple of sessions. I have lost two or three pounds but look like I have lost loads of weight according to my friends.

I agree you could probably get the same results in the gym but you would need a lot of dedication and probably a lot of help from a personal trainer if you are not experienced in using gym equipment, to achieve the results you want. I doubt it would be possible to get where I have anywhere near as quickly, without the help of Vacunaut.

Go try it if you havent already!!!

in response to marie ive just had a baby too and my tummy is now flat and firm and few stretchmarks i had are well improved and just in 3 of the 12 sessions you get in a course. rich and maria own the hypoxi centre based in sun city in daventry they are friends of mine so i know they wouldnt have fooled me into paying that amount of money if it didnt work! really worth it! i think thats the nearest to you in milton keynes so just down the motorway. mk did have one it the david lloyd gym i think but it aint there no more dont think!

and just a comment to the sceptics i see your point but after having a baby and the thought that i wouldnt have my flat tum ever again at 21years old i was willing to try anything sooooo glad i did. there may be a way to getting similar results through months of training but women with young babies ought not to train the muscles too hard for months and lets face it tiredness and time availability for gym sessions isnt that viable well not for me anyway especially as i take my baby there with me where she naps in her pushchair in front of me for the brief 40min session. could i do that at a gym!!!

Absolutely brilliant workout. I did 24 sessions, but I saw a drastic difference after just 6 sessions. I deffinately dropped a whole dress size, and felt fantastic, I'm getting married this year and I'm relying on vacanaut to prepare for my size 10 dress.
I worked hard on the treadmill, I jogged for upto 40 minutes ,3 times a week. It was abit draining, and I wouldnt recommend going onto do much more that day. If I followed the diet plan strictly ,I'm sure I would have trimmed up even more. It works, but i wish it wasnt as expensive as it is.

Is this available in South Africa, if so, where?

just wanted to say that if your body temp gets to 45 degrees? maybe 46? your body fat starts to go watery and can sweat through your pores.
Thats why boxers wear those sweat suits. you t lose maybe a pound for a 45 min run but still it works.
