Diet Spam: Who Buys This Stuff?

Spam. Unsolicited Commercial Email. It clogs my inbox and no matter how hard I try, there's always plenty of spam that gets past the filters and blockers.

I don't think I've heard a single person say they enjoy getting spam - and yet, there must be thousands of people out there who click on the products and buy them.

Spam email is a big business, and they wouldn't keep sending the emails unless people were buying the products.

So what is it that makes an unwitting member of the public reach for their credit card? Here is a spam email I received today:

From: SlimBody News
Subject: New Diet-Pill zaps fat & cellulite cells forever

Baffled, Top Scientists Say.

"New High-Speed Diet-Pill Causes Fat and Cellulite Cells to "Pop" Like Bubble Wrap, Burns 937 Extra Calories a Day, and Boosts Your Metabolism By a Startling 500%. All Without Diet-or-Exercise"

Fat cells pop like bubble wrap? Sounds dangerous.
Burning 937 calories per day? That's equivalent to walking at 4 mph for 2 hours 25 minutes.

It seems laughable, but people are responding to these emails. They are following through, fronting up their credit card, and paying $39.95 for a bottle of these pills.

Clicking through to the website provides a far more convincing argument. The page is complete with a dozen testimonies - all with audio "phone calls". There are even 14 scientific journals referenced to back up the outrageous claims that are made.

It is easy to see how a person might respond to these claims after seeing the air of authenticity the site gives. Desperation can drive a person to try anything - hoping that it might be the miracle we are all looking for.

There is only one place for spam, and that is the delete box. Spam eats your life - I shudder to think how much time I would spend over a year deleting and filtering out junk email. So much for the CAN-Spam act.

Amen to that. Counting on human's tendency to believe and cling at hopes, even false ones, is an ugly tactics... but it works, else these people would be out of business by now. E-mail spam is probably what little papers claiming that "Magician X will bring your wife back-make money come to you" were to my life in the big town: you don't know where they come from, yet they keep on reappearing everyday in your mailbox with extraordinary promises. Scary.

I have had a lot of comments about similar products (namely Cellu-Svelte, Liposlim, Carbo-slim and Carbo-stop)on my Think Slim blog at http://smallchange.typepad.com/thinkslim but these products are advertised in junk mail rather than SPAM. I think that makes them even more likely to get a response from people. I never get SPAM about diets but I've had a large number of these letters sent. The companies seem to target particular countries and do a mass mailing. They don't even have a web presence. Yet people want to believe so badly they buy. These sellers make me so mad giving false hope to people who are desperate to lose weight.

These companies usually set up shop, sell a lot of product to desperate people, and then disappear before the FTC shuts them down for making false medical claims. It is really criminal. The sad part is, if it was not so very profitable, we would not see all that spam.

I just recieved a packet of information containing news of "Cellu~Svelte". I have taken the bait before and am almost tempted to so so again. Although, I called the 1-866 number to inquire before ordering and was connceted with a man that replied "order desk". I never heard a company name and when I inquired about the product he informed me that he placed orders for this company. I felt a little uncomfortable and am trying to find info on the net. At present I have found nothing. This is probably another "too good to be true deals". If anyone knows differently please let me know...

Hi everyone, I just want to tell you Im one of those people who got suckered in to cellu-svelte which came by Australia post in the mail. I sent a money order off of a $179 dollars that I could not really afford because I also want desperatly to loose weight. A week had gone by an I had not received anything in the post so I decided to take a look on the net and found out it to be a scam so I rang a number thats on the back of the money order stub and found out that the money order was still unregistered which means they had not cashed it yet, so I was able to put a block on it through Australia Post. They said it would take a week before I get my money back but we will see. The only reason they could come up with the money order not being cashed yet is that they must be swamped with mail. Well I hope this helps others

Hi, I have surfed many sites with posts on cellu~svelte patches, and out of all the listings of negativity and sure hit opinions that it is a scam, how many have actually tried it? about 1 out of 30? and out of those 1 out of 30's more than half have had some kind of positive result! I'm sorry these web site postings are just as believable as the celebrity tabloids, The only way to know is to try it, what may not work for jane doe half way around the world may work for you, on the other hand it might work for jane doe but not you. Unfortunately it's hit and miss, trial and error, sometimes you just have to take a leap of faith, I have girlfriends who have been on a doctor's perscribed medication just as expensive, worked for one but not the other.... NO Refunds offered there! Every body is different. By being frightened to take a chance could very well be ripping you out of something successful.
Mine arrived today 8kg to loose and I'm active and a healthy eater, as did my mothers more than 24kg to loose who is more inactive and a not so healthy eater,
But we're going for it.
I'm not going to be frightened off trying something by people without first hand experience.
Given the ingredient chemistry of the active ingredients I'm pretty confident it will work.
So Elena I'm right with you.
As for lack of website, some religions do not permit that kind of technology and as we have no personal background on the people producing this product, it's difficult to judge.
I'll let you know of our findings as we are researching this product to stock in my Beauty Salon and all side effects (if any), negative and positive results will be tracked weekly and recorded for our review.

Where are all those people that have been using it for about 3 weeks or more? Please reply and let us all know what you think.

Is there anyone who has had success here? There doesn't seem to be any recent feedback. How were the patches used? e.g. visibly during the day or only at night and were there any skin irritations as a result? I have received the info through Austraia Post and am considering a 28 day trial @ $99.90. I look forward to hearing from a recent user.

For those of you who don't speak Italian: Marianna says that she has tried many diet pills and is desperate. She received some mail advertising cellu-svelte but she's afraid that they don't work. She'd like to hear from anyone who has had any positive results.

Cara Marianna, no le ho provate, ma il fatto che Amanda ha prometto di raccontare i risultati ma non risponde da cinque mese indica (a me, almeno) che e` uno scam.

Hi everyone!
My name is Ana and I'm from Serbia. I've been trying to lose about 10 extra kilos for years. I had a baby last year, and it seems even more difficult to lose them now.
I've just got an offer for Cellu-Svelte - not patches but pills. It all sounds too good to be true. I'm thinking of ordering 20 pills, they say you could lose 20 kilos with them in 20 days. It's not plenty of money, about 40 euros, but I'd still like to save it if they don't work.
Please let me know.
Thanks!

People get fat by adding something, adding more food. Then they think they can lose the fat by adding yet more, adding diet pills. No, you have to subtract. Subtract food, subtract body fat. There is no other way.

Well, I just tried the Cellu-Svelte patches a few days ago, the only thing I got was a massive hot, red raised rash all over the areas where the patches had come into contact....Horrible!

The best weight loss is healthy diet combined with active exercise/sport or eating less generally.
