Celebrity Name-Calling: Jessica Simpson's Diet... Again
The diet and exercise regimes of celebrities have great influence. A number of popular diets have been promoted, in part, by celebrity endorsement. However - how much information can be trusted?
This recent blog post outlines Jessica Simpson's routine for her role in the movie Dukes of Hazzard. In the last few days there's been a second flurry of reporting about the same routine - but this time it's a little different. This time the diet has a name - the South Beach Diet.
Most reports refer to Simpson taking up a "trendy new diet" - even though the South Beach was actually released in April 2003. The South Beach Diet includes a 2 week induction phase - and it seems very unlikely that anyone could undergo extensive physical training with such little carbohydrate intake.
Ananova actually reports that Simpson went "on a crash diet". So what exactly is the truth? Well... no one really knows - and should we really care?
What is important is that there is plenty of diet distortions that go on in popular celebrity reporting. Many readers unwittingly embark on a fad/crash diet simply because they read about a celebrity apparently following such a diet.
As far as Jessica Simpson goes, - her personal trainer probably guided her through some of the principles of the South Beach Diet (lean proteins, low-GI carbs in moderation, and healthy fats). These are good principles.
A crash diet? I don't think so. Squats, lunges, and one hour of cardio per day doesn't really mix well with a crash diet.
UPDATE: July 2007
Jessica uses the 5 Factor Diet to achieve her latest weight loss and physique change.
I am an idiot? Why? Because I speak the truth. Do you think your average celebrity is eating 2000 calories or even 1200. Get real. They do what works. The only way your body is going to think it is starving is if you get no nutrition at all. Like what happens in third world countries. People here are able to get vitamins etc. So that whole thing of your body feeding off of itself is bullsh$t. If you people want to look like Hollywood do as Hollywood. Don't eat like a d*mn cow.
Exercise_maniac I appreciate your concern about my intellect but weren't you the one who stated earlier you can't lose weight. How about cutting your calories. Might work for you.
Replyi must say, that i complete agree with food_for_the_masses, to be like a hollywood star you must eat and exercise all day like a Holl! star! :)
ReplyI see a 'crash diet' as something people do short term to hit a certain weight fast..certainly the case for Jessica Simpson. SB is a sensible way of eating, but for Jessica, I think it is a 'fad'. She has made no bones about the fact the has no exercise plan normally and eats whatever she wants. I see a 'fad' as anything we don't stick to over the long haul and I think that applies here.
My two cents. :)
ReplyActually, the whole body feeding off itself isn’t a bunch of "bullsh$t" as you say. Starvation is the worst way to go about losing weight. When you deprive your body of food, it goes into "starvation mode" and conserves all of the calories it can. Translation: your metabolism comes to a crawl. Not eating just makes it harder to keep losing weight, and then when you do start eating again... which most likely will happen.. The weight comes right back. Why else do you think people lose weight but can't keep it off? The best way is to yes, decrease your caloric intake - but not completely. You should never decrease your intake below 1,100 calories a day if you are a woman. Eat small meals through the day that are non-processed and high in protein, low in sugar. Make your meals count.. They will leave you more satisfied and less likely to snack. Taking weight off slowly and healthily is way better than crash dieting. And unlike starving yourself, life style changes can last a life time. Good luck.
ReplyIf you work out enough and eat JUST ABOVE starvation levels, you will probably lose a ton of weight. Seems to me that's what celebs do. They work out with trainers for 3 hours a day and eat zone food or SB food or macrobiotic food or whatever. And they're probably only getting like, 1200 cals a day or so. No one's saying that's extremely healthy though...it just gives you fast results, which is what Hollywood wants.
ReplyI think Winona Judd's diet plan is killer. I can't seem to keep up with the twinkie count though. I'll keep you updated.
ReplyPeople listen, the way celebrities lose weight is a million times different than the way we lose weight. Do you have a high-profile celebrity trainer with you everyday for 3 months? no, do you have over a million dollars in the bank? no you do not. These celebrities have access to stuff that you couldn't even dream about, and for that matter, that's why they can lose weight in a way that we can only imagine. And anyway, they keep these diets up with thousands of dollars paid to weight loss trainers that know exactly what to do to get rapid weight loss. That's why the article said it was a crash diet.
~Jessica~
Replyjulie's comment is probably the most dead-on i've seen. in order to lose a lot of weight, in a way that won't KILL your metabolism is to make sure you eat just enough calories (1100-1200), small meals, throughout the day. a friend i had swore by mountain dew, caffeine and vitamins. she shrunk, made her stomach permanently smaller, but also did not slow down her metabolism at all. no one's saying you shouldn't try to eat less but don't ruin your metabolism by starving yourself - its the *only* thing that keep the weight off in the long run.

Bullshit. I lost 40 pounds in 3 months. No trainers no nothing. Pure exercise, pure workout.
ReplyIt just takes willpower.
Ok, food_for_the_masses, or what ever your name is, you have a point, if you diet the right way, you won't starve yourself...but most people don't do it right.
Ok, Ms. Illiterate Twit, you are insane. Posting an announcement that you will be starving yourself to lose weight bla, bla, bla, is pathetic. Are you trying to make the world feel sorry for you? I hate to tell you this, but it's not going to work. You need to see a psychiatrist immediately. Do you not realize that young girls vistit this site hoping to find tips and shortcuts for weight loss? They'll see your post and think, "Hey, it's not a bad thing, this girl's doing it. I think I'll start tomorrow" This goes for the rest of you deluded morons who think that by starving yourself, you'll achieve the image of perfection as well. Do whatever you want, but don't encourage other people to do it.
I'm sick of coming here and reading posts by 90 pound twelve-year-olds stating that they are "too fat" or "not sexy enough". There are more important things in life other than body image.
One more thing: pplz, dis, u, wit, tomoro? plz lrn how 2 spell u illiterate moron.
ReplyAnybody know how Reese Witherspoon maintains a healthy weight? I cook healthy casserole type meals for my family, which she claims to do as well...and I was just wondering if she has other tricks to keep her weight manageable...?
ReplyWot the bludy hell?!?!?! "The only way to get like a celebrity is to eat and exercise all day like they do" BULLSH$T!!!!! if a celebrity is fat, she/he gets lipo, how do you think they lose 25 pounds in 1 week? no diet or exercise can do that. Also, the body feeding off itself is 100% correct, its been proved by scientists so what makes you think your right about sayin its rubbish?!
Replyhello, one comment to that "illiterate bitch" '[[[[ 0o0 ArMav --sXc 0o0 ]]]]' What the hell is wrong with you in your head??? Not only are you tellin people starving yourself will lose you loads of weight, your even sayin those diet drinks have no calories?!?! WTF! "no carbs = no sugar, no sugar = no calories" ok.... here a tip, NEXT TIME CHECK THE NUTRITION LABLE, DIET DRINKS HAVE TO HAVE AT LEAST 280 CALORIES EACH TO PROVIDE THE RIGHT NUTRITION YOU MORON
ReplyMY god !!! [[[[ 0o0 ArMav --sXc 0o0 ]]]]you have a big problem!!! ok u can starve yourself if you want( Its not the right thing to do )but don't say eachother that its the right thing to do to lose weight!!!! plzz wake up!! One day you'll eat more than a apple and a carrot...this day you'll gain more weight than you losed!!! And you'Ll say o my god !!! why I made this!! its so stupid!!Me I lost 12 pounds in one month because I worked hard and I didn't starve myself because I wanted to stay in healt!! If you want to be sick its your problem...but don't encourage everybody to stop eating....that's all I have to say !!!
ReplyTofood for the masses, i know for a fact that people are not able to lose wiehgt even with cutting calories....read up on pollycysitc overies....
ReplyI don't think everyone needs to be so negative. Anyone who visits this website probably has some sort of problem (as do I) and being rude and hateful people who have a skewed view of life does nothing but encourage them and/or makes them feel more depressed. I've done just about everything including starving myself and I want to do it again, but I don't think I can nor want to. Alot of people don't realize that certain foods can encourage your body to work more regularly. If you search for Ayurvedic dosha you can find out what body type you are: kapha, pita, or vada. It gives you a list of foods that are good for you and a list of foods that are bad for you. These foods even effect your mood and mental health. Some of them are hard to give up, but if your serious about treating your body right then this is a great guideline that suits you your specific needs. I haven't decided what I'm going to do yet. I'm sick of being chubby and looking at my old modeling pictures. I think I'll do tae bo everyday, one of Billy's old tapes, I really like the workout and it's really hard. I think I'll also eat only one of every type of food every day. Like a serving of oatmeal for breakfast, 3 hours later a cup of soy milk, 3 hours later 1/2 cup of applesauce, 3 hours later 1/2 cup of green beans, and 3 hours later a 1/2 cup of cottage cheese. My boyfriend gets concerned but recently we decided to split up our food so I don't think he'll notice. I haven't really made up my mind yet though. Good luck everyone.
Replyi think Jessica Simpson is a great role model for people and young kids.... i mean so what if she is "sooo thin its sick".... well shes not. i like her and she must be happy with the way she looks and i wanna look just like her :)
Replyand you guys dont have to like that cause its your own opinion ;p
Antonia: she is constantly photographed while drunk, goes around half-naked exploiting her body to make money, and has had lots of plastic surgery when she's not even 25 years old. She is also proud of being dumb. If you consider that a good role model, I feel sorry for you. I hope you can separate "wanting to look like her" from "wanting to be just like her", at least.
ReplyNot to switch gears too much but does anyone know what Jessica Simpson's exact workout was? I know I read this in some magazine a few months ago. They were interviewing her trainer or something. If anybody on here saw that article too please let me know.
ReplyMy God...you people. To start off, YES it is possible NOT to lose weight by cutting calories alone. Yes, I know from first hand experience, it's called polycystic ovaries syndrome. No, I don't eat like a cow. No, I don't starve myself. Yes, I managed to lose 22 pounds in three months. For some reason, people will continue eating crap in smaller quantities. Obviously, it's just stupid. Stop eating anything processed or refined (a.k.a. anything made with white flour which is nearly everything in supermarkets) If you're a woman and having serious issues, I would suggest seeing an endocrinologist they can put you on medications to help if you qualify.
If you seriously idolize these celebrity females (as far as looks), get your head out of your ass. Chances are if your genes aren't skinny and you can't pull hundred dollar bills out of your ass, you probably won't look like them. Liposuction, tummy tucks, microdermabrasion, laser treatments...you name it they got it. Besides, they don't look anywhere near the same in person. It's called airbrushing.
Oh, and for that nitwit bragging about starving yourself...No one cares about your problems. They care about your teenybopper body dysmorphia just about as much as they care about New York sewer rats. Which is close to nill.
ReplyOk, here's the deal...
Replylook inside first...like who you are? great! You don't? work on that, become "who" you invision. Then take a look on the outside, like what you see? if yes great! If not, feed your soul... the rest will follow.
Shallow Hal. Now shut up you fat whores.
Replyyou guys are all rong who cares whats on the outside all that I challenge you to become skinny and hollywood type is stupid stuff stick to whats on the inside be true to yourself or forever be miserable and i speek the truth!!
ReplyI agree with anonymos they really are speakng the truth we all should stick to whats on the inside and be true to our selfs it helps I tryed it but it is ok to look nice as long as your attitude is good
Replyatonia if you think you wanna be her your so messed up so get a new role model cause you aren't going to get any friends with her as your role model because barely anyone likes her and her looks they only like her music.
ReplyExcuse me, but anyone with an ounce of intelligence knows that vitamins do not supply all of the necessary nutrients your body needs. Hollywood celebs are dangerously underweight and these crash diets or "not eating like a cow" as you so politely put it, is putting them at increased risk. How many times have you read an article saying that some celeb was seen all jacked up on some sort of drug or passing out a a party. To be quite honest, drugs are a big part of the Hollywood scene. These celebs are crashing and burning. So sweetpea, learn what it is all about before you attack someone else's intellect and become a part of the research studies being done to understand weight loss and why it is so hard for some to lose weight. Scientists can't figure out the secrets to successful weight loss, Maybe YOU should enlighten them.
ReplyHey any ideas for a 166 pound 13 year old girl?
Reply(I am tall, 5"6)
What we need to remember is that it's their job (celebrities) to look good. I don't know about anyone else but I don't have a spare 2 hours a day to excerise..For the average civilian, exercising 3 times a week for an hour or so is enough to keep us all fit and healthy and with a balanced diet there is no excuse to being overweight!!
ReplySarah that's your oppinion, How much do YOU weigh?
ReplyYeah and it's a good opinion...a healthy opinion if nothing else. I'm five foot 4 and 114 pounds...Normal!!!
Replyyou people are all ridiculous! let me be the peace keeper and step in here. why is a bunch of people who don't even know each other arguing? everyone is entitled to their opinion, whether or not you may think it's right. maybe i can make a general statement that maybe we'll never know exactly how the stars look good, im sure its a mixture of what we all think- money, trainers, and also exercise and a sensible diet plan. now im not saying there arent some celebrities who do "crash diets" or dont eat much, but then again they are under the spotlight and are getting fit for completely different reasons then us. but you do have to give some celebs credit, the ones who did it the right way.
we all came here because we want to lose weight, we have that in common, why cant people just help each other out instead of having to be right. sure, some opinions here are absurd, and the girl who commented about starving... if that is your method, fine, but why would you post something so ridiculous. thats just asking for comments, go to a pro ana site if you need to express opinions like that.
i think the main thing in losing weight is HEALTH. because where are we without our health? i came here too see how jessica simpsons got such a great body, maybe pick up some diet info, see what foods she was eating, or some particular exercise she was doing, but by no means did i come here to pick up her entire workout plan and find out everything she ate for the three months while she got in shape. i think thats important her. i dont think any of us can adopt her entire workout and dieting plan, nor would we be able to get it.
ReplyIf you are normal Sarah, then why are you on this site? (betcha can't answer that, Hah!!)
ReplyThanx 4 making Peace melissa!!!! TTUL.
I've lost 35 pounds in the past 3 months by running and eating a little less...a little healthier. But everyone is different. I believe that just being more active is the answer. And no matter what ...starving yourself only makes it worse.
ReplyI don't see why the drop all the weight. Once they start they don't stop.
ReplyI lost five kilos pretty easily and healthy in 2 weeks. I followed a book that suggested cutting out starchy carbs after 3 pm (pasta, potato, bread),eating 3 meals a day, and two snacks, it really worked. After 2 weeks i was unable to loose any more weight though...i dont know what to do :(. im thinking of trying a detox. i only want to loose another five. Does anyone have qanqy suggestions. Im not stupid, i cant starve myself and i know it doesnt work aswell.
ReplyI'm 5'4" and 125 pounds. For the amount of muscle now on my body and just the overall shape of my body, this is a perfect weight for me. I know everyone has a different body type and there's no one diet that's exactly right for everybody, but I recently gave up on fad diets and tried the 5 Factor Fitness Plan. It's used by the likes of Halle Berry and I lost so much weight and sculpted up so fast. Basically, you eat 5 meals a day, workout 25 minutes a day, five days a week and see amazing results in just 5 weeks. You even get a cheat day to eat whatever and whenever! It doesn't give you a set meal plan, either. It tells you what needs to be in the food you eat, such as high protein food in the morning, more vegetables at lunch, etc. It's easy to get used to, and best of all, CONVENIENT!!!! I don't have a lot of time in my busy life, so convenience is the key! And it's not just a diet for now, it's a diet for life.
ReplyOk: I'm gonna say my piece - please don't attack me for it!
I used to want to look like people like Nicole Richie and Mischa Barton; clearly not going to happen when I'm 5'10 and built more like Tyra Banks or Cindy Crawford. I started looking at people who were healthy, in body and mind and worked hard at their bodies but weren't obsessive or did anything dangerous, and used them as my role models. I workout properly about 3 times a week, a mix of cardio, resistance training and pilates and the rest of the time keep active with activities I love. In terms of eating I have small portions and try to eat healthfully, but do have stuff I love if I so desire it. I don't count calories because I find I get obsessed with it.
This, at least, has worked for me because I've found a balance of taking my body seriously but not being too hung up on it and just enjoying my life and having a good time.

ReplyA big problem today is that everyone thinks they know what they are talking about, and few really do. If you haven't done your homework, and you have only your friend's sister's brother's uncle's doctor's words as your supportive evidence, don't contribute. Because YOU are the problem, and you are the reason why most people are totally confused.
My fiancé and I have researched every possible weight loss "program" and work out routine we could possibly find over the past 5 years. (This is why I was on this forum, looking for even more theories)
After reading so much garbage from people who really don't know what they are talking about. I really wanted to offer some helpful words to those out there who really need some advice.
By the way, what I write below is not a "quick weight loss" plan. This is a way of life you can actually live with and keep the weight off....
What we have found after not only researching but actually trying Atkins, Southbeach, BodyforLife, ZoneDiet, and of course, crash diet... (and by the way, when we "try" a diet, we do not cheat--period.) is that they all are flawed. After reading many books, going to seminars, and so on, this is what I would recommend you do…
Eating: Eat lean meats such as fish and chicken and minimize the red meats (even though I love steak!). You do this because most red meats contain high amounts of unhealthy fats (despite what SB and Atkins preach) Make sure your meats are hormone and antibiotic free. (Egg cartons will say "free range" on them)
Why "Hormone & Antibiotic free"? Because those chemicals that they put in the live-stock you eat affect your body very negatively (i.e. Tired spells, chemical imbalances develop, etc.) I cannot stress this enough, but if I said everything I wanted to say I could hold a 4 hour seminar on fitness and weight loss and I want to try and keep this as short as possible. Just keep in mind not to take anything I tell you lightly because I don't have the time to stress my points.
In addition to your meats make sure you are eating healthy fats. Despite what you may have read, all fats are NOT healthy--period. Omega 3,6, and 9 fats are what you should be eating. (Mostly found in good seeds & nuts like Almonds, Sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, etc) Healthy fats aid in the weight loss process and are absolutely vital. (The fat on a steak however, is just lard you are putting in your body---MMMMM!)
Your carbs should come from vegetables and some fruits (no carrots or bananas though). Don't worry about eating only protein because you won't be able to maintain that. (Trust me, I know--and more importantly, it is VERY bad for your body when it affects your ketone levels)
The bottom line is that your diet should be balanced. If you do eat bread then keep it to a minimum and eliminate bleached white bread. Go whole grain. (The real stuff) But remember this, 1 slice of the very healthiest whole grain bread has the same end sugar result as 30 cups of broccoli! Vegetables are just that good for you. :-)
Water, Water, Water! If you are a pop/soda drinker cut that crap out! Soda/pop is constantly the WORSE possible thing you can put in your body. The acid imbalances it does to your body screws everything up--BIG TIME. Your body needs to be in an alkaline state for optimal performance. (Watch what happens to your thyroid, skin, and over all body after years of soda—even diet soda) Which kills me to say because I LOVE all soda! But you deserve to know what it's doing to you. A note on energy drinks, make sure you are drinking the sugar free energy drinks if you have to drink them. More importantly make sure your energy drinks do not contain aspartame. Aspartame is absolutely horrible for you and deadly to say the least. Find energy drinks with Sucralose (Splenda) which is derived from more natural sources. The only sugar free energy drinks I have found with Sucralose and not Aspartame are “Monster”, “5-Hour Energy”, “Full Throttle”, and “Sobe Rush”. Again these are the “sugar free” versions of these drinks.
Nothing is better for you to drink than water. (Especially for weight loss) Your body must detoxify it's fat cells in order for you to actually lose weight and water aids in this process. (But that’s a whole other conversation) ;-)
Snack: The moment you let yourself get to that "I am starving!" point is the moment you say screw it and order a pizza. Will power is at an all time low when you are very hungry. Snack on nuts, seeds, protein drinks (Isolate whey is a great protein supplement--and often said to be the best—but try syntrax if you want great taste.). Snack in-between meals always...and when I say "meals" I mean 4-6 meals per day or basically every 3 hours you should eat a small meal.
Vitamins are a must as well. Start taking a good multi-vitamin every day and even a potassium supplement if you ache after your workouts.
Speaking of working out... Your workouts should not be "I am going to kill myself today". If this has been your workout plan and you found yourself getting slow results or even no where, here's why...
There are two things you can do during your work out, burn fat or burn sugar. If you raise your heat rate to 80 or 90% capacity during your workouts your body is doing way too much for normal energy producing operations to take place (i.e. burn fat and use it for energy) In this case you are demanding way too much and your body is burning the fastest possible energy source it can find, sugar. Your body (even on Atkins) always has a minimum sugar storage amount in case of an emergency. You successfully burned all your sugar that day and probably some muscle then a little fat.
Instead, work at about 60% or your heart's max (and by the way your max heart rate is 220 minus your age) and your body will naturally burn more fat during your workout and over time your resting heart rate will go down. (Which is good) This is how you will be able to increase the intensity of your workouts. (Lance Armstrong has a resting heart rate of about 30 at his peak shape---which is just amazing)
Weight training is also important but that is too much to get into here as well. Just a quick reminder that there is no such thing as “pin-point weight loss”, you’re not going to lose weight on your stomach doing ab work. It’s just a fact. Weight training is very important though especially when done as a cardio workout.
My suggestion to those of you who want to lose weight fast but efficient and keep it off is to stick to this plan and just do double workouts if you can find time. Work out in the morning and then again in the evening. It's not necessary though.
One last thing, I'm not going to lie and say "love your body the way it is". Because our bodies can be unbelievable fit machines and I love when my body is like that. Not when it's fat, tired, and unattractive. At the same time I will say skin and bone is hardly attractive either, and it is certainly not healthy.
With that said, I am going to give hope to all of you out there that have said "but I love food, and I hate knowing that I will never be able to eat it and be skinny!"
Not true.
When your body is worked consistently your sugar storage capacity increases--which is a good thing. To give you an exaggerated visual, when you're fat your sugar storage bins in your muscles are like pea size. However when you are working out and exercising consistently, they grow to the size of apples! This means that once you are in shape you can eat pizza, brownies, cookies, cupcakes, chips, waffles, etc. within reason, and not suffer from it! There is an entire scientific explanation to this with many additional reasons but just take my word for it and enjoy the thought of eating more of the food you like once you are in shape.
If you have any questions, email me at elchens@hotmail.com , Im not an expert, but I know more than most.
All the best!
p.s. I wrote this fast so I apologize for any typos.
ReplyI think all of you need to focus on eating healthy instead of looking like a celebrity. They have people hired to perfect each part of their life including diet, exercise and makeup. Be yourself, eat fresh foods, exercise and everything will fall into place. Stop eating fake food out of boxes and fast food joints. Why weren't our grandparents and their parents fat? They ate real food, i.e. fruits and vegetables and didn't drive everywhere! well, there's my two cents!
