The Reverse Diet Solution
Tricia Cunningham's weight loss method of eating meals in reverse has created quite a stir. So much that Tricia has even begun writing her own book: The Reverse Diet Solution.
A number of weight loss diets call for a tapering of carbohydrates during the day (i.e. eat most carbohydrate in the morning, and the least at night). Many people go even further to say that we shouldn't eat after 7pm.
Does Tricia's regime taper carbohydrates in the opposite way?
Is it that the body likes to have changes in order to break plateaus? Does the diet help because people eat more protein in the mornings (most people tend to eat very carb-heavy breakfasts - sugary cereals, toast, milk, fruit, etc)?
Here are some answers:
Don't Eat:
Salt, sugar, alcohol, caffeine and carbonated beverages.
Do Eat:
All vegetables, fresh and frozen, including potatoes
Extra virgin olive oil (the darker, the better)
All seafood, chicken and turkey
All berries, peaches, pineapple, apples, grapes and plums
Eggs
Lemons
White cheese
Fat-free sour cream, salad dressing and skim milk
Low-sodium margarine
GARLIC, GARLIC, GARLIC
All spices, excluding salt, read your labels!
Post Shredded Wheat and Bran
Uncooked Old Fashion Oatmeal
Orange juice
Red meat and pasta, in moderation and small portions
Tips:
Eat a BIG breakfast.
If you don't normally eat breakfast, take tonight's dinner and put it in the refrigerator and have your breakfast for dinner. This will jump-start your metabolism so fast, you'll be running to the scale!
Never skip breakfast.
Don't overeat. Save leftovers for snacks.
Eat a medium lunch and small dinner. You do not need to fill up at the end of the day.
Use water, margarine, olive oil or orange juice when preparing meat.
Drink two glasses of hot lemon water per day.
Drink when you're thirsty. Don't force eight to 10 glasses of water per day.
Eat when you're hungry
Tricia Cunningham also enjoys loads of tofu and eats 3-4 servings per day. See Tricia's complete shopping list here.
UPDATE: Tricia's website can be found here.
UPDATE 2: It looks like Tricia's diet should be laid to rest as another fad - at least according to the experience of people in this group.
UPDATE 3: Reverse Diet book has been released.

Is Tricia Cunningham website up yet?
ReplyHas anyone used this diet and lost any considerable amount of weight?

Understand that anything new and exciting is like a toy at Christmas..... You play with it and if you like it and can stick with it it is yours for life, however, if you have no interest in its effect you put it down and say,"I did not like it anyway."
To follow the Reverse Diet Solution Plan you must be willing to change your life and your eating habits... You can not expext to continue the same bad habits and lose weight. It would be like a bank robber taking his mask off before a hiest... you are going to fail at your mission.
I was knocked from the get go on my plan. I had no support, family/friends, or a true written plan to do what I did. I took one for the team, so to speak, to be able to answer every question asked.
If you want to change your bad habits, be accountable for your own actions, and lose weight & be healthy and happy, then the Reverse Diet Solution is for you. If not, do what feels comfortable to you.
I am here to help those who are willing to help themselves.
Best Wishes

I don't compare my body or eating habits to a CHRISTMAS TOY! I don't know anyone that thinks they can continue eating the same exact way as lose weight. If we all thought that then the diet industry would not be as large as it is.
There are many rip off companies on the market looking to make a fast buck off of people looking for a quick fix. At this time it appears some of the backwards diet by this woman has been put out for no money. However, no where has anyone seen all of the diet. All anyone has is bits and pieces.
I belonged to a nice group of people where Tricia Cunningham posted as various people giving more hype to the diet. In several of the posts she used langauage not appropriate for public. Unfortunately, I have gone back several times and it seems this group has disbanded.
This woman who has claimed to lose a pound a day in 40 days and yet more weight in less than 9 months. The group I was on no one was losing a pound per day! It is a miracle only this woman can lose a pound per day.
Would you go on a diet that promised a pound per day loss? I tried it and it did not happen! Again, I didn't compare my body to a Christmas Toy and desire to eat all the foods prior to starting the diet.
Another thing why should I have to belong to group, call someone on the phone daily to report in or get more information on the diet? Is this an ego trip for this woman? Is she lonely? Why would anyone want people calling them daily asking about the diet? My only guess is she needs to FEED her EGO, She needs to be wanted.
For all of you looking for a diet, this is not the one. Please go to Weight Watchers group meeting or try South Beach or Atkins or Ediets. All of the information is out there, and as far as I know you won't need to call someone daily to get the diet as the days progress.
ReplyHello Debbie,
I would like to clearify a few things that may have been misunderstood.
Fact 1. The group...Reverse Diet...was NOT my group and I never used inappropriate language, in fact the group was disolved by Yahoo themselves because of the misuse of my name, company, and trademarks.
Fact 2. My plan has been around for 6 years and has only gone national and international in the recent year.
Fact 3. The concept behind The Reverse Diet is an education about eating habits and for life- this is not a fad diet and nor can it be compared to such.
Fact 4. You will never read a comment in which there is any claim to a 1 pound per day weight loss. I will back up the claim that 2 to 3 pounds of fat loss per week is a safe claim, although, typically the losses on this plan are greater. I had a significant amount of weight to lose and that attributed to the accelerated loss in the begining, however, the fact that I kept it off for 6 years is the key factor!
Fact 5. There are thousands of individuals that I have helped and will continue to help through out my life. I, unlike most diet authors, have left myself accessable to my clients for their special needs. I could never take a daily call from everyone, hoever, I do try to help those who need a more personal touch. I was a former hospice nurse and helping people is my life. I gain serenity in knowing one person has been inspired by my story to help themselves.
Fact 6. This is not your typical diet, it is a lifestyle change. There are three phases to the plan- 1-weight loss, 2-stabilizing the loss and the introduction of your former foods, 3-Maintaining your goals and utilizing your knowledge.
"No one wakes up in the morning, looks in the mirror and says,'I want to gain a 150 pounds and I am going to start right now.'". We all have our reasons as to why it is there and the Reverse Diet will help you go from here on...For LIFE.
Best wishes,
Tricia Cunningham

Hello,
I think this diet is crazy and just a passing Fad.
Debbie good to see you again! Hope Paul came through his surgery?????? I know it has been a stressful summer for you. I wondered where you had gone. I'll send you a link to the group.
I have looked at both sites and believe this is the better site.

ReplyI am on the Reverse Diet Solution.I started the diet weighing 268lbs. I have tried all the others even pills. I have never lost weight and inches before this fast. I am healthy I eat all the food groups except red meat. I love the diet. I have lost 20lbs in one month. The group gives not only recipes and shopping list it give encoragement too. We those of us in the group give help to each other. This is the best plan I have ever been on and you don't have to buy books or meals or bars or pills to do it. It is a very healthy eating plan. Go look it over I challenge you to try it before you knock it. It really works. We do eat tofu but thats good for you too if you know how to cook with it. I use it in fruit smoothies and its wonderful thanks to Tricia I have a future without paying $50k for by pass surgery.
ReplyKelsmom, I've been reading your posts at the group and you aren't doing very well on this program. You said yourself in a post that you haven't stuck to the diet for over 2 weeks. This being the case I would say this is a FAD diet and you have gotten caught up in the Fad. I guess your diet success with this program was very short lived.
Someone suggested Weight Watchers. I think that is the way to go. Kelsmom, I suggest WW to you, then you won't then you can continue to lose weight the healthy way.
Sandy
ReplyThis sounds like a very interesting diet program. I think it has a lot to do with changing your habits. I don't think you'd lose weight on it if you really did eat the same thing you normally eat, but in reverse. Calories consumed are calories consumed, no matter when you eat them. But I can see how eating protein and veggies in the morning would make you less hungry during the morning (less likely to snack) and eating a light dinner of eggs or a bowl of cereal would be good for your digestion while you sleep. So as long as you make pretty good choices, I could see this being a pretty okay diet.
ReplyI have tried this diet and for me, it works. It made perfect sense for me. My lifestyle is so busy that I found the diet very easy to stick with. I had a hard time getting used to the cereal with orange juice, but, after you find the right cereal it becomes rather tasty. I have tried WW and South Beach and have had a hard time. I was frustrated due to lack of food with little or no results. I felt as if I was on a diet. This diet, however, is very easy to follow and stick with. I have lost a pound per day and have kept it off. I won't post my weight loss as of yet, because I want to reach a huge milestone before I shout it from the roof tops. So, please don't knock this diet. If it doesn't work for you, then it doesn't work. But, as for me, this is exactly what I have been looking for. I am very thankful that Trisha was featured on my local news. This way of living has changed and saved my life.
ReplyWait a minute...you put the OJ ON the CEREAL?? Ugh, gross.
ReplyYep. It gives it a certain....twang!
ReplySorry, I could never do that...milk goes on cereal, not OJ.
ReplyHi,
I've been reading all that has been posted and wonder why this woman wants people to call her daily to report in? Someone above suggested lonely or ego trip. I must agree with Debbie's post on this.
Mary thanks for this site information.
http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/reversefaddiets/
I checked it out. I didn't see any posts by Cunningham there.
Again, what I read from Kelsmom it appears she has not kept uo with the weight loss and one of the Moderators even dropped from the group. If this truly is a great diet these people would be here posting about it.
Weight Watchers has an excellent story on their website today about a woman who lost oer 100lbs with triplets. I have never done South Beach so don't know anything about it. I can say I don't believe these two diets are Fad diets, but I truly believe this Backwards Diet is a FAD program.

We do not bash any diet of choice that a person chooses.
We harber no anger to Trisha to disban our group, we reformed.
What made us angry is when she tried to act as an imposter, many times,
Want proof.........here you go...........
This a copy and paste format, no editing, so the grammar errors will remain.
My name is Angela and a friend of mine suggested that I come to this
group, he's a lawyer and a very good friend of Ms. Cunningham's. I have
to say I am a little taken back by some of the comments, almost scared.
I think this woman is amazing to come forward with her story. I live in
Pittsburgh, Pa. she has been on the news several times around here. She
really has done alot of great things for people in the area. I have
been on her plan that I got from her for three weeks now and have lost
12 pounds. I never used to eat breakfast, only one meal a day. I
babysit my grandkids and I was always on the go. Any help with getting
over chocolate cravings?
1. I only stated that you have to be committed and nothing in life is
easy, you have to work for it, be committed, and want the best for
your self, as TC said, "Nobody wakes up in the morning, looks in the
mirror, and says, I want to gain 150 pounds and I am going to start
today."
Angela
2. I have been in this site from the begining and I have lost wieght, I
along with so many others, have lost weight, I followed the plan and I
am quit happy with the results
3. Now you are messing with my mind. I was here under anothe rID and I
read her post, saw her posts and plese do not insult my intelligence.
Tricia Cunningham was here
4. My husband snd I both called her tonight and she is very receptive
and professional. I have been reading these post and I think, as a
mother and grandmother
5. It is here in Pittsburgh, Pa. are you near us? i would love to go
with someone else for support. Tricia Cunningham's friend has lost
alot of weight and loves the support she gives. Where is she?????????
(This was the post Elaine responded to, you deceived her as well)
Angela
6. Hello Al, I am new here too, my name is Angela. I have been onthe
plan and losing alot. Were you doing it correctly. My husband lost 25
pounds in one month. We are from pittsburgh. Tricia has a support
group locally if you need extra help
7. I am so glad Tricia's diet isn't a fad. Pitsburgh's been doing this
for years. We have a great community here and she has two groups that
she talks too weekly. I just found out when her next meeting is and I
ca not wait to meet her. I am really loving all the food and the
weight loss.
Angela
8. I emailed and was told that if I could not do it with the water to heat
up the whole lemon for 16 seconds and it would activate the diuretic
effect.
9. Wow, I thought I was the only one who had alot of weight to lose. I
have been on the diet and lost weight but I don't use salt. I never saw
anything where it was allowed. I thought it was not ok.
Angela
10. Those items are not on the diet that I have. My uncle is a doctor
11. actually, Angela is my aunt, she was posting (Please refer to the very top, her introduction, yet another attempt of deceit)

I must say that I have tried many diets over the past 14 years, and this one sounds like something I can do. As far as being a FAD, well isn't anything you fall through with a FAD? All of the things you say make perfect sense. They are all things my nutritionist told me to do years ago, but obviously I was not ready. It's like quitting smoking. If you are not ready it won't happen. Obviously if people are not succeeding they are not ready. I wish everyone who tries the best of luck and you can only take it one day at a time.
ReplyI was on the Reverse Diet for over 4 weeks. The first two weeks, I had the most awful passing of gas, bad breath from the onions and garlic. The cereal and OJ was a completely disgusting to eat and I won't mention what it looked like.
My membership was at a group starting from GMA. At the time Trisha Cunningham was a part of the group up until people starting having problems with the diet.
In the 40+ days I was on the diet I lost all of 5 pounds. My wife lost all of 2 pounds and after 10 days she became severly ill, and faint from the diet. We both followed the diet. Others from the group I belonged to had the same responses with the gas, bad breath, overall tired run down feelings.
I would not recommend this plan to anyone. It is very difficult to remain on a diet where your family is eating a large meal in the mornings. Our mornings before work is quite a frenzy and for everyone to sit and eat a large meal is next to impossible. The results we had was not enough to warrant staying on this diet.
As for the magazine articles anyone can say anything. I highly doubt there authenticity of success soley on this plan. Everything wrote about in the above posts regarding the diet being what it is are true statements, many of these people I reconize from the GMA group. There was a lot of people who had the same results my wife and I did.
ReplyEating margarine? Orange juice? Carby dinner?
I take back what I said, not a good idea. I'd GAIN weight on this diet. But I still like to eat dinner food for breakfast a few times a week.
ReplyI believe anyone who skips dinner or at least eats a low calorie dinner will in deed lose weight, be it a salad with low cal dressing or munching on celery and carrot sticks. Most families eat together and Mom is usually the one who can't seem to get out of sitting down and eating with them after she has fixed a wonderful dinner for her family. Sit and eat with them but stick to a low calorie meal or munchies. I lost 14 lbs in two weeks by skipping the sit down meal and just munched a little after the fmaily ate. Fix dinner for them and go workout
Replyinstead sometimes helps.
hi my name is ruby in im 289p so i can use all the help i can get so if anyone can help let me know pls
ReplyWow, I am a little disappointed with the comments and bashing here. Isn't safe to say that there are some lifestyle approaches that work for some that do not work for others? Is it really necessary to bash, just because it didn't work for you? I think the basic concept behind the Reverse Diet is logical and could most definitely fit with some peoples lifestyles. Consume more energy when you need more energy. Consume less when you need less. Of course you need to exercise. Of course you can't eat ice cream sundaes and chocolate cake everyday. But a big breakfast, light dinner makes sense.
ReplyI read about Tricia's diet in First Magazine last week and it seems really sensible to me. About 7 years ago, I studied abroad in a country where lunch was the biggest meal of the day and I lost about 30 pounds in 7 months without even trying. So, I can totally see how this will work considering it consists of all healthy foods. I have to say I am little surprised at all of the backlash regarding this being a FAD diet. I don't know about the rest of you, but I am used to FAD diets consisting of eating fruit all day or veggies all day;lol. Anyways, I just wanted to say thanks to Tricia for sharing her experience with everyone and good luck to anyone who is partaking in this.
ReplyThis diet does make sense. As long a you also watch the caloric intake. I am originally from Germany and we always had our lightest meal in the evenings. Most of the times it was something simple like: scrambled eggs & salad, open faced sandwiches. Growing up in Germany we also did not eat as many processed food as we do in the USA. We did eat a lot of potatoes and bread. However, the bread did not contain preservatives and was always whole grain. Vegetables were always organically grown since my parents grew their own. During one of my visits to Germany I lost 20 lbs in a month eating the way I grew up.
ReplyI don't like calling healthy eating habits "diets" it simply teaching yourself new habits. The article makes complete sense. Even my teenage son agrees. You need fuel to kick start your day. I'm starting my new habit today and know that it will work. I'm very happy with how I look, but turning 40 I don't want to gain any weight so I'll keep u posted on my progress
ReplyI started the Reverse Diet two days ago. I have lost 5 lbs., and even had a few halloween candy bars! I also feel great! I am also taking Watkins bee pollen which is keeping my energy high! The diet itself is very simple, and easy. I have no hunger pangs and am very satisfied! This one is the one I am going to reach my goal with!
ReplyI have just started this diet today. So I will keep everyone up to date on my success.
My breakfast was at 9am and I at two pieces of fish with spinach and tofu sauted in olive oil and garlic then a squirt of lemon juice on it all. all this with a whole grain piece of bread and lemon water. It is now almost 1pm and I am still so full I can not think about food.
This diet makes so much sense to me as I never used to eat breakfast and would sometime not eat lunch then I would completely over eat at night.
wishing me and everyone lots of luck.

ReplyFor years and long before The Reverse Diet hit the news, I've been having a large meal at breakfast time, a medium-sized lunch, and a VERY light supper, and at 5'7", I've maintained my weight between 127 and 134. The reason why eating your meals in reverse works is simply due to the fact that your body burns most calories/fat while awake and active and far less during the night while you are asleep. So having your large meal at breakfast time gives your body the fuel it needs for the day and the calories will be burned off whereas if you are having your large meal at your evening suppertime, most of it will not be burned off and will be stored as excess fat.
Although Trisha Cunningham's recipes seem interesting and nutritious, I don't personally use them since I've always disliked recipes containing several ingredients. I like cooking to be plain and simple. Breakfast for me goes something like this: broiled cod or salmon, a small red potato, and a large portion of vegetables. Of course, it varies and I don't have the same thing every day. Lunch is a salad or a sandwich on whole-grain bread, tuna or even peanut butter and blueberry jelly, and supper is either oatmeal or shredded wheat with Simply Smart milk (zero fat but tastes like 2% milk) and a half cup of blueberries. I rarely if ever use any sugar, I use Splenda instead, and I don't use any salt and use a salt substitute, NuSalt. I season with things like garlic and lemon, Nusalt and pepper. I rarely have cakes, sweets, or junk-type foods, but when on the rare occasion that I do (like a piece of wedding cake at the wedding), I simply have it and enjoy and it and obsess about it. I rarely have sodas, preferring water or Simply Smart milk or green mint tea.
If one eats with an eye toward good nutrition, does not over-indulge (like eating enough for 2 meals at one meal sitting), and makes the breakfast the main large meal of the day and the supper the small meal, you're bound to lose weight and keep it off. It's really a simple concept since you'll be taking in the majority of your nutrition and calories in the morning when you'll be needing them for the day and also burning them off throughout the day. This society has been programmed to believe that the large meal of the day has to be taken in the evening, and if one can't seem to get used to being the other way around, that's certainly their choice. Some people may not be able to manage a large meal in the morning due to their schedules. For those that can, it's a great concept that works. I'm sure I'll NEVER be having my shredded wheat with OJ (!), but to each his or her own.
Caroline
ReplyCorrection: I DON'T obsess about it (the piece of wedding cake) LOL! :-)
ReplyCaroline
I started the "reverse diet" yesterday after reading it in FIRST magazine. I feel *better* today, not as tired as usual but I must say I was a bit disappointed yesterday - by the time I got home last night I was STARVING for dinner and ate a normal dinner (I guess a big no-no on this plan!). I also didn't bring a snack with me for the afternoon and would not cave to the evil vending maching. I am going to stick with it though and see how it goes (I throughly enjoyed my breakfast and brought a healthy snack with me today).
I need to lose 50 pounds. Yes very depressing. I saw a photo of Kirstie Alley at her heaviest and thought "Oh my GOD she is huge!" then I pretty much cried all night knowing I must look just like that. I guess I've never been THIN and never will be (just not built that way) but never really watched my weight or what I ate until my 30's - and now after having delivered 3 10 pound babies (yes they were all 10 pounds) I am finding myself obsessed with how heavy, depressed and unhealthy I am. I would love to be at a normal weight around 150-160 for me (I am 5'8) I am finding that nothing works for me to get the weight off and keep it off. consistantly anyway. I read "the carbohydrate addict's guide" and tried that plan but it made me crazy/obsessive with not being able to eat fresh fruit plus "skipping meals" isn't something I could see myself doing (like the book suggests) for the rest of my life. south beach forget it. one week into it and I'm eating oreos for dinner. never tried atkins because I know that is not something I could commit to. can't do jenny craig food delivery is not for me. slim fast? sorry I need real food. weight watchers don't have time for. I am a busy mom of 3 active kids also working F/T outside the home. diet pills don't work either. they are unhealthy and addicting and to date I have not lost one pound on any of them and I have tried them all.
I was so hopeful with the "reverse diet". I still am. I really enjoyed my salad and grilled chicken lunch and have NO CRAVINGS for the plate of homemade chocolate chip cookies someone brought into the office. (grrrrrr!!) I think eating healthier overall will help in general. I sometimes get so depressed I just want to eat everything in site. That must sound familiar to you all. Guess I just needed to vent a bit. Hope you all have much success at whatever you try.
ReplyKat, if feeling starving at suppertime, try having something without a lot of calories but with lots of fiber that will fill you up. Like a can of black beans, drained and rinsed with a little extra virgin olive oil and seasoned with salt and pepper (I use salt substitute Nusalt).
ReplyI just started reversing my meals today. I am so excited about it. I know this can work. It has to because I won't be eating as much. My supper has usually been so large because I taste it as I cook it, put it on the table and eat my meal and then pick at all the extras that are on the table. This way, I am the only one eating chicken in the morning and today, I could barely get down half a piece. It isn't easy eating so much at 6:30am. I felt full till lunch. I had a piece of fish with peppers and tomato for lunch and am thinking oatmeal and fruit would be yummy for supper. I think this can work and with all of you helping, well, how can I go wrong? I raise a cup of hot lemon water as a toast to all of you.
ReplyI have good news to report! After three days I have lost four pounds on the reverse diet!!! I tried the oatmeal shedded wheat with O.J and all I have to say about that is NEVER AGIAN. Everything else is easy and I have noticed an added pleasent side effect. I have not had the afternoon fatigue that I always had when I would skip breakfast.
I will keep everyone up on my progress. I 100lbs to lose so I am sure this will be a long journey but hopefuly a little shorter with the help of The Reverse Diet.
