The Backwards Diet
Tricia Cunningham went from a weight of 292 pounds down to 125 pounds, using what she calls "The Backwards Diet". So what is the Backwards Diet? Eat what you would normally have for dinner at breakfast.
Cunningham cooks salmon, cod, or any protein she wants in a marinade of orange juice every morning. She also likes to dump any vegetable she has into a saucepan and crack two eggs over them, making a veggie soufflé.
For dinner -- you guessed it -- she eats breakfast. Usually she eats oatmeal with shredded wheat in orange juice, not milk.
Of course it could just be that Ms Cunningham was eating a little better; oatmeal, oily fish, vegetables, and shredded wheat are all great food choices. The article also points out that Cunningham was eating 5 cloves of garlic per day. Not quite sure what effect this has on the bodies metabolism, but would be a good immune booster none-the-less.
UPDATE: Weight corrected to 125 pounds.
Tricia Cunningham actually went from 292 lbs. to 125 lbs., not 175 as stated. She lost 170 lbs. on the "backwards diet".
ReplyYeah, I think her diet has a lot more to do with eating healthy than with eating backwards.
ReplyI would be interested in finding out how to get in touch with this woman. If anyone knows please let me know. Thank you
Replymy local news station ran an update of this story tonight, and in checking back on the original story they ran, they had contact info for her. here's what www.wtae.com has listed:
You can contact Tricia Cunningham at 1-866-333-2216 or triciac@aplaceformom.com
ReplyLinda you can get in touch with tricia cunningham via email or by calling

This woman has a good idea. I very often have my dinner leftovers for breakfast the next day. I don't like cereals and pastries and this cuts the boredom of eggs.
ReplyI think that this diet can work. I know it has alot to do with her eating healthier, but I also think it has alot to do with her getting the majoriaty of her calories at the start of her day. I know I could do this diet at home, but am wondering how to do it this summer at the lake and on vacation. Also, the 5 garlic cloves, confusses me, How do you incorparate 5 cloves into you diet everyday. I bet she reeks......(but atleast she is a healthy smelly person)
ReplyI just ate a dinner for breakfast this morning . . . instead of my usual whole wheat toast and low sugar jam. I had so much energy that I was actually kind of jittery, like one of those "annoying people" who can't stop moving (BTW, fat people like me are always jealous of you skinny jittery people :). By 11:30 I was STARVING, when usually I can make it until 1:00 with just a diet coke and my breakfast toast. So, my guess for this diet is: I think it really wakes up your body, revvs up it's metabolism. Now, I'm just wondering if I'll be super hungry at dinner time. I sure hope not.
Oh, as far as the garlic? Try odorless garlic from Walgreens. One capsule is worth five cloves in itself.
I think this diet is definately worth a try. Healthy carbs, low fat, low sugar and an increased metabolism . . . I could use that.
ReplyTricia,
I want to tell you congradulations you look terrific.
I have gone on all kinds of diets and eat a breakfast and then a dinner it is all healthy food. Have been to all of them weight watchers and etc.
Starting tomorrow I will start your diet and will let you know what happens. My concern is to lose weight plus the flab also.
ReplyI am excited about this one. So i am trying it.
ReplyI am on WW now but at a standstill for the last 2 months. I will start your program in the morning.I would like for you to e-mail me some menu's if possible. I need HELP!!! You look great!!! I pray this will work for me. Where can I get some more of your recipes?, can you e-mail me some more of them.?
ReplyTricia looks great, but, I'm sure she did more than reverse her meals. If she ate that healthy, even backwards....she would never have got up to 292 lbs.
Replyhi I have haad gastric bypass surgery some of these thingI can eat I want to do it just for the body
Replyshaping would the soy proten drinks
I think Tricia should be commended. I would like to try this, but had a few questions. I am wondering about the use of skim milk instead of the orange juice. I am not real crazy about it . Also the use of bread is wheat or high fiber ok or should it not be used at all?
ReplyFor Linda . . . Hi. I'm not Tricia . . . but her diet plan included a potato for breakfast along with broccoli and chicken and a side of eggs and green beans . . . its waaay alot of food. i'm thinking the whole wheat/high fiber choice is an even better choice than the potato (from an intestinal standpoint).
Replyadriana, Thanks for the feedback You mention her diet plan I am looking for where I can get a copy of it or some of the sample meals. Any advice
ReplyLinda, I found some of her info by looking at this website from a news station.

ReplyAdriana or anyone...I would like to know more about what type of oats you can have.. Quaker Oats?
ReplyIrish Fine oatmeal? What can we put in it ..honey, butter, milk? What about cold cereal ? Like Oat Bran Flakes with Raisens? Could you have Mexican food for breakfast? Pasta with meat? Do you have any other meal suggestions besides chicken & potatoe?
Was she pregnant at her highest weight? I see a couple of pictures w/baby. I know a couple of woman that gained 100 pounds w/preg. but lost that weight after birthing and still have great skin, unlike after repeated weight loss and gain. I wonder if she had a weight problem for years. Wonder if she is working on a book deal... more recipes needed. P.S. a co-worker is taking the oderless garlic pills. They aren't oderless... ask an honest person-if you're taking them too. :)

ReplyI am so excited to start this diet and am looking forward to tomorrow to start. I love all the happy comments made. I want to do it just as she did and not try to change anything. My way hasn't worked so let's give this successful lady a try. I wish myself and all of you reading this good luck.
ReplyThank you for your recent response to my plan. I am so excited to finally get this out to everyone so they may feel as good as I do. I have received thousands of emails and phone calls. I would love to respond to everyone in person, however, as you may know that would be extremely hard for one person. ( Even Wendy Bell has help.)
I do want you to know that my book, Your Body is Talking, Are You Listening?, will hit the shelves soon. It will include a little information about me and my own life long struggle with a weight problem. You will also find all of my tips, recipes, and answers to all of the questions I have received. My web site is in the works as we speak.
I wish you all the luck in the world. Give yourself a big hug from me and remember, “If I can do it, anybody can do it!”
Have a splendid day,
Tricia Cunningham

ReplyHello Tricia, Wow what a great diet. I went to work today and told my fellow hairdressers about your diet. I started the day after u were on the news. I can't wait for your book. I think it will be a great diet to follow. Right now I am totally confused about what to et, portions ect... I to do not care for the oj in cereal, why not skim milk? About caffine why not? Loads of questions but very excited. Thanks for sharing. Becky from Vero Beach
ReplyI think this is a great idea. I have heard fitness expert Denise Austin say "Eat like a king for breakfast, a queen for lunch, and a pauper at night". Tricia's diet is just more proof of her theory. Thanks for all the info and healthy recipes!
ReplyI was just wondering what your progress looked like and what progress others have had... Also if the program would be airing agian? Thank You. Congratulations.
ReplyThis makes sense.... get your calories at the start of the day when you need 'em most! I find when I have a larger meal for breakfast (usually a protein with vegetables) I don't have the urge to snack during the day, as I would if I ate only cereal for breakfast. It made such a difference in me, I never skip breakfast now. (One of my faves is ratatouille with an egg.)
ReplyI was in awe when I heard about your Reverse Diet. You look absolutely wonderful!! Kudos! I plan on trying the diet myself. I was reading my diaries up to ten years ago and in every diary, I found myself writing about how I wanted to lose some weight...needless to say, I'm bigger now than I was when I started writing about how I wanted to lose weight. I'm trying your diet and will let you know how it works for me. I won't deviate from what you did so that I know what works. Thank you for sharing with the world.
ReplyInstead of OJ in the cereal, why not Soy Milk. It has no cholesterol. There are several brands. Some are not that bad. I have been doing this for quite a while and prefer it over milk.
ReplyI was interested in knowing if she had any pics of herself before losing weight showing her skin or not. I know some women can get big and never have a stretch mark or any loose skin after having a baby. So I was wondering if it was really the tofu or just good genes? Either way this sounds like a good diet and if anyone can lose that much weight without pills or surgery then they should be commended.
ReplyTricia I started reversing my meals about a week ago.
ReplyEating just what I would normally have for dinner for my breakfast and a large salad for lunch and shredded wheat with skim milk and sweetner {Splenda} for dinner.
And I lost on average of 1 pound per day. And drinking lots of water and no exercise. I have more energy during the day now. Thanks for the tip, it works for me.

ReplyI'm 16 and I have tried literally about all the diets in america and some would work but just for a little while. I really don't stick with diets that limits your food or that you have to measures every little grain. But from what I can see this diet is pretty much no change in my eating habits( dinner for breakfast, ect.) So i will give props to this girl.
ReplyIt's really hard for me to do regular teenage things because my weight is 235 pounds. So I really hope this works for me. My mom and me are going to start it soon. Thanks for all your inspiring words everyone!

I heard about Tricia via my Mom (our mom's know each other), and I just checked out her website, as well as alot of the press articles. I'm happy to see someone from "back home" making a success, especially in the fight to control/rid obesity.
I just had Gastric Bypass, and plan to use her tips as I recover and resume a regular meal schedule. I think her approach is a good fit with my thinking on Nutrition, and I'm anxious to try this. I'll also keep an eye out for her new book.

The Reverse Diet Solution may be a fad diet, but it also makes sense. Reverse Fad Diets also promote fad diets as well in their group. They have people in their group that is on Atkins (fad diet), South Beach (fad diet), the Zone (fad diet), etc, etc.... so please follow your heart. Unless you are eating a well balanced diet every single day, exercising the alotted amount of time for your height, weight, age, body type, etc. and are just a healthy person in general, then I would say that most diets are a fad diet. That doesn't mean that you can't stick with it, or that it's not healthy. I think the Atkin's diet is one of the most unhealthy diets out there. It's not good for you to be able to eat that much red meat or bacon or pork - puleese! So, read over this diet and see if sounds doable for you. That's really all that matters. I'm not even on this diet, but I may be some day, I just hate it when people try to force others not to do something or too do something because it didn't work out for them. What happened with the reversefaddiet group is that they got mad at Tricia and wouldn't change their original name because it was much like Tricia's reversediet group name, and Yahoo! shut their group down. So, their mad and don't want anyone doing this diet. It's not a matter if it being a fad or not, they just got their feelings hurt. So do what you want. Best of luck to you all!
