Rosedale Diet - Another Low Carb Diet?

A few weeks ago I purchased a copy of the Rosedale Diet by Dr Ron Rosedale. The book describes a diet that is high in 'good' fats - low-to-moderate proteins, and very low carbs. In fact the only carbs allowed are fibrous carbs - like green veges. All grains and starchy carbs (i.e. potatoes, yams) are out.

After reading a lot of diet books - so many of them follow the same process - lots of pseudo-science, loads of recipes and meal plans, and, well, not a lot else really. A breakthrough? What do you think?

Hmmmm... if only

UPDATE: There is an excellent account of one persons experience (positive) with the Rosedale diet here.

UPDATE 2: Please read my comments further down. This posting was unfair to Dr Rosedale, and in hindsight I feel I was a little hasty.

IS anyone else just as discouraged as I am? I was doing so well and then was diagnosed as perimenopausal. Now, with the hormones, I can't seem to lose any weight. I am just stuck and I feel horrible. Any advice?

Jeanie, I was diagnosed as Peri-menopausal a couple of years ago. My gyno (right out of med school) suggested I contact her when the symptoms became "unbearable" or when I "felt miserable" and she would put me on a cream to rub on my skin on different parts of my body every day. Rather than wait until I was miserable, I followed a friend's advice and consulted with a "compounding" pharmacist here in Charleston SC who changed my life. He first gave me a comprehensive questionnaire that determined my hormone deficiencies and dominations. After starting the special mix of hormones he made (you still have to get your Dr. to fax or call in a Rx), I felt like a new person in 3 days. No more achy joints, sleepless nights, dry skin, hair falling out, fatigue, appetite out of control, etc. I feel wonderful - no kidding! I've even returned to college full-time. If you have a compounding pharmacist in your area, I urge you to consult with him or her. Sometimes you have to travel to find one, but it's worth it! Good luck! Maggie

TO Jeannie: Welcome to my world. It seems that once you hit a certain age, a woman's body just stops. Sometime I sincerely believe that I could never eat another bite of anything, and still retain these 35 lbs I do not need. But, I will not give up. I am at the end of the second week following the Rosedale plan. It seems that I spend all my time counting out supplements. But I am so happy to discover that while I get hungry, I don't feel like I need to eat something. Do you ever just feel like you need something to eat, but really don't know what it is? So you graze through your kitchen, but nothing satisfies, and the compulsion remains. This combination of supplements seems to supply me with what my body needs. I don't need to steel myself to bypass even chocolate!!!

Just one more thing for Jeannie: Please pick up a copy of "What Your Doctor Won't Tell you About Menopause" by Dr. Lee.
I had the same experience with hormone replacement therapy as you describe. I followed his advice, weaned myself off Premarin, and now I use a progesterone cream. I am really happy about that. Of course, you should involve your doctor, (I didn't), but please find the book.

Ladies,

Have you ever heard of boiidentical hormone replacement?? There is a salivia test where the results result in a topical natural cream that is applied to the skin based on your bodies hormone needs.
Hormones actually change based on weight, diet and more importantly stress level (WHO DOES NOT HAVE STRESS THESE DAYS).
Age actually is not a way to judge your hormone levels because everything we eat is now injected with hormones and pesticides...nothing is truly organic anymore.
My imbalance started after the birth of my 4 yr old...I am only 28 and face alot of the above issues.

www.lakeviewrx.com

should have the info that can guide you...I am just a patient but I refer alot of the women to lakeview.
NAT JONES is the awsome pharmacist over there that can answer ANY question you have.

Sincerely Concerned,
Jodi

I use the bioidentical hrt and deal directly with Nat. He is THE MAN! After 21 years of a childless marriage, I now have a healthy 8 month old due to replacement of progesterone. Nat said that I am about the 3rd or 4th "infertile" patient to become pregnant after using bioidentical hormones. My progesterone was reeeeeaally off before beginning the treatment. My weight came off a lot easier one I started the treatment. Don't get me wrong. I didn't get pregnant overnight. I got preg. when I was 40 and had a mc. Then 3 years later, I had this pleasant surprise and carried full term. I was 44 when my little boy was born. My hormones have since gone haywire again, and I am now awaiting my new treatment. Lakeview will mail you your treatments. They are wonderful! I am a walking advertisement for that compounding pharmacy AND Nat Jones!

Are you kidding? Where would you even think that it is healthier to eat man made garbage than what nature made?

By the way... can you eat grains, potatoes, and rice raw? I think not and you should simply not eat what WE as humnans convert and process and try to tell you it's healthy....

Rosedale Diet - I guess it depends on how much you really want to lose weight and how much you like healthy food. I've been doing it for only a week and already lost several pounds that I haven't been able to shed for a long time. I love salads with avacado and walnuts! I feel like I'm indulging every day.

I alos bought the rosedale diet book after years of trying to lose 30 pounds I gained very fast when I remarred at 40. I never had any luck despite lots of exercise and trying to cut back or change the way I eat. I was trying to do the Coconut Diet but it seemed to exotic and I couldn't take the coconut by the tablespoon. Rosedale's diet, though much the same principle, seemed much easier. And I was better educated by that time and really determined. I've been on it for about 5 days and lost three pounds. That is typical -- I will wait and see if I can stick to it- But I also love nuts and avocadoes and am feeling like I can do without bread and potatoes -- as long as I can have butter and olive oil on veggies and salads...I have been using milk though, because I get it from pastured cows ---so it has CLA in it and is of high quality. I also eat ricotta cheese from the same cows and I get beef from the same farm.

I was an editor for Prevention Magazine for 20 years and all those high carb low fat recommendations just packed on the pounds every day -- despite walking regularly, weight lifting often etc.

I am disappointed with this review. To call it "psuedo-science" dismisses the fact that Dr Rosedale was among the first scientists to discover the hormone leptin. Additionally, I am on my third week on the diet and have lost 10 lbs. I have PCOS and find it nearly impossible to lose weight...until now. This diet may not be for everyone...and the book could be better edited...but it is a powerful diet for those who truly have problems with insulin and leptin.

After revisiting this entry, and looking again at Dr Rosedale's contribution - I must confess - my short blurb was unfair.

Rosedale was certainly a pioneer in the study of leptin - and the more I'm reading, the more I'm convinced that his thoughts are very helpful and appropriate for people with certain health conditions.

Once again, thanks to the wonderful commenters on this blog who often bring such balanced and well-needed discussion.

I have to just write a quick note about the Rosedale diet. A year ago, I sent my dad, 65 to see Rosedale speak and do some tests on my dad (he had high blood pressure and an enlarged prostate). My father (and since then, at least 7 of his friends) have went on the Rosedale diet and now he no longer takes high bloodpressure medicine, has lost 33 pounds and walks 5 miles twice a day. I have to say, if I did not see it myself, I would be skeptical. I myself am embarking on the rosedale plan, and can only hope that I am just as successful.

I too just started Rosedale. After Fat Flush, the recipes are positively extravagantly luxurious. I too feel like I'm cheating every day having avacados, nuts, mayo (made with the proper fat) and all manner of good tasting condiments. Welcome back to my world, worchestershire!! And a little hard cheese too. I'm down another blouse size and I'm having a hard time keeping my jeans up. I too am post menopausal. I have Dr. Lee's book for a long time, but when I have not been using the bioidentical hormone cream. Couldn't tell much benefit, so I sort of skipped it.

On Rosedale, I'm also finding that my "brain fuzz" periods are fewer and shorter durtion. Great. I'm in a new occupation with a steep learning curve and I need my facilities back. My only regret at this point is that I did not discover any of this years, decades, ago.

Have been on the rosedale diet for 5 days now. I love it. I literally have been unable to lose weight before this. Even eating practically nothing and working out with a trainer, my weight would only go up instead of down. My leptin levels were the highest my doc had ever seen. Anyhow, I have lost 9lbs in 5 days, feel wonderful, lots of energy, no cravings at all. I am impressed with this way of eating.

I lost 68 lbs from August 21 to November 4 on Rosedale!!! This is not pseudo science. It works for me. But I think you must do what works for your body. I have struggled with weight all of my life. The first time I lost a lot of weight, I starved myself. The second time, I ate primarily seafood -- and I was never hungry. I gained it back, once I started adding complex carbs to my diet -- high carb, very lowfat diet (this was back in the 90s, before the lowcarb explosion). My weight came back over a span of 8 years -- for emotional and physiological reasons. I recently decided to try Rosedale, after reading about Leptin (and dealing with emotional eating issues). This thing works. It confirms my earlier effort with seafood -- the weight is PLUNGING. It is truly amazing. Try it. If it works for you, good; if not, find what does. OH -- AND I DO EXERCISE. YOU CANNOT DO IT WITHOUT EXERCISE. IT'S VERY IMPORTANT. WALKING IS SUFFICIENT, BUT MOVE YOUR BODY.

Tommee -- you will have to find sources of good oil -- flax and fish oil supplementation should help. And you obviously will have to get your protein -- I am not sure about his position on soy and other plant based sources of protein. He loves nuts, however, and nonfat dairy (which if you are vegan you wouldnt eat). You can also use a whey protein supplement; wholefoods has excellent shake mixes; you can combine with yogurt or low carb soy milk (silk makes one). The only problem I would imagine you having is doing without grains.

Just started the Rosedale diet about 1.5 weeks ago and love it. When I am hungry, I eat things I enjoy and feel like I am splurging instead of 'dieting.' I never got into the 'low-carb' diet phase, because it seemed far too extreme for me. I love health foods, veggies, and fish so this diet is made for me. I have more energy and fewer brain zone outs on eating this way. Honestly, as I re-read the book, I realize this diet actually falls into the way I know I should eat. Processed grains such as rice and bread are not good for us and should be limited. The Manana Bread is excellent. I found a similar low carb, high protein bread at the grocery store that I use when I want a bit of bread and it works perfectly.

For vegans, he allows soy products although with process veggie burgers he wants you to look at the carbohydrate count. As a former vegetarian, the Rosedale diet appears doable for vegans.

I know most people don't like to count when eating, but, for those who do, you may find it helpful to know that the Rosedale diet corresponds to something like a 25/25/50 or 30/20/50 diet, where these numbers are percent calories from carbs, protein, and fat (versus, for example, the Zone diet's 40/30/30 formula). The 50% fat calories should be from good fats, and the 20-25% protein calories ensure that you get enough protein (15% is the minimum required protein you need, and 30% is the maximum you can tolerate). Also, on a weight basis, the above numbers mean that you should be getting roughly equal weights (grams) of carbs, proteins, and fats. (Note: The carb numbers would be counted after subtracting fiber which is not digestable.)

In terms of personal experience, after losing about 20lb on a low carb diet (like the 40/30/30 diets), I was amazed to find that I lost another 15lb on the Rosedale diet, and, more importantly, all my blood numbers improved, even though I was eating about 50% (good) fat as calories, and with no change in exercise regime.

Just found the Rosedale Diet book in a book store and am anxious to try it.I feel that any diet will work if one can stick to it but so many are so boring so you lose interest after awhile.I have to feel as though I am indulging myself with foods considered to be prohibited on most low fat reducing plans.I understand that the Rosedale Diet allows foods like avacados and pecans in moderation, also healthy oils like olive and canola. It will be interesting to see if the diet succeeds in taking off about 40 post menopausal pounds.I would be thrilled if it works!

My boss's cardiologist suggested this book so he bought a copy for the employees, but This is about a friend of mine who has been on the Rosedale diet for a short time now. I am a skeptic when it comes to things of this nature, so I decided to see how he fared. He has lost tons of weight, his energy level is through the roof, his appitite is under control and he even looks younger. He suffers from heart trouble and his cardiologist is amazed with his progress, as he is off all heart meds. Based on this experience, I have started the diet and recommend it to anyone that is serious about losing weight and curbing their appitite.

I'm newly 48 right now. 5 years ago I underwent kidney surgery for a massive calcium based kidney stone that shut down my left kidney. Prior to surgery my blood numbers were all decent. After surgery I found myself diagnosed with high blood pressure, with type II diabetes, and I went through sudden onset menopause without the "peri" part. In the years since then, blood tests and various scans have also showed early onset osteoporosis, continued high calcium levels in my urine, and a growth on my adrenal gland. For the first time in my life I also experienced some pretty strong bouts of depression and also some fairly debilitating arthritis. This is definitely not cool since I've always been a person with a sunny disposition, great sense of humor, and a love of being active outdoors. After 4 years of desperately following my doctor's advice, joining an American Diabetes Association group at the local hospital, following their diet and excercising, my blood numbers and health were gradually worsening, I couldn't lose weight no matter what, and my physician just kept adding or increasing my diabetes/blood pressure meds. I was at wits end, feeling that something was very very wrong...and THEN (let the music begin and the lights come on) I found Rosedale's medical conference speeches online, followed by his web site and then his book. Reading his words was like finding a spot on a life raft after going down with the Titanic. In following his research and checking his claims against respected sources such as Harvard Medical Research, I began to realize just how obviously right-on Rosedale's take on health really is. I adopted his basic guidelines slowly..cutting pasta, then rice, then bread (except sprouted grain bread), and so on. It took about 2 months to get myself into the Rosedale habit, complete with stocked refrigerator and more wholistic sources for food purchases. In a matter of weeks I reversed my blood sugar levels down to nearly normal, increased my energy level, lowered my pain level significantly, and lost 32 lbs. Lately I've been making mistakes as the holidays have rolled in. Old habits do die hard, and there are times when I neglect to make the right choices. As this has happened my pain, depression, blood sugar readings, energy level, etc...have all hit the skids again. Oh yes...I also have psoriasis, which is an immune system/inflamatory body response. It also wanes when I follow Rosedale's guidelines and comes back with a vengeance when I go back to old habits. When I follow the Rosedale plan correctly I do not have cravings and am driven to eat only because I am experiencing lower blood sugar and REAL hunger(what an amazing reality that is!) When I go back to old habits I am a victim of carb addiction cravings. I am convinced that insulin spikes are a bad thing for everyone. Even more dangerous for people like me who have already suffered damage enough to be labeled a type II diabetic and to be losing calcium, which in turn grows lovely large stones in my kidneys. Here's another thought: Why is it that I can relate kidney stones and bone calcium loss to a high carb/high insulin producing diet, but my kidney specialist tells me, "I don't know anything about diabetes and I don't relate diabetes to kidney stone growth."? This is the best kidney man in a town hospital that's rated one of the best in the country! How many "symptoms" of high insulin are supporting the specialists of the world? After months of reading and research prompted by Rosedale's writings, I firmly believe most, if not all of my health issues are related in the end...to insulin. Rosedale should be taken seriously by the medical community. This won't happen unless the medical community stops being held monetary hostage by the pharmaceudical companies. I wish I could meet with Dr. Rosedale. His research is saving my life, and there's no local support for me here. I'm having to make the decisions by myself. I sure could use some support. And lately the articles that have been hitting the news headlines at Reuters include things like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's being related to diabetes and glutamine levels...which really translate into being insulin related diseases. What's next?

I've been on the Rosedale Diet for 3 1/2 weeks now. I'm a little discouraged because I've only lost 10 lbs., but after the first couple of days when I felt like I was going through a complete detox, it's been the easiest diet I've ever followed. Your whole feeling about food changes. You just eat for nourishment and not for entertainment. It really does something to the brain. I lost my 10 lbs. without doing a single bit of exercise. I'm planning to start exercising with this diet, so hopefully the weight will go faster.

I have been strictly following the Rosedale Diet since July 2005 and it has totally changed my life. I have stablized at a 30 pound weight loss, my lifelong patttern of gnawing cravings has stopped, and I have a clearer brain than I've ever had in my life.

Everything Dr. Rosedale promises has happened to me, including looking like I work out (all I do is walk my dog every night!).

For anyone who is really serious about reclaiming their health and putting an end to cravings once and for all, I HIGHLY recommend that you follow this regimen. After the initial three weeks you'll never look back!

Read the book and started last monday (day after superbowl...read between the lines). I was 312 that day. I am 297 now. 15 pounds!. Although, as a precentage, not so impressive 'cause I have a lot to lose, but progress nonetheless. Kinda scary because I haven't really followed it to a T. Plus, I did some walking 1 day, but nothing else.

Funny how I have to get my mind around what I just ate was "healthy", even though it was a chicken breast salad, it was loaded with olive oil, etc. I'm going to actually pay attention and follow the rules this week and will report back next Monday.

I still have a few cravings, but more mental I guess. I only drank water last week which was amazing. I feel like I miss soda, but not really. Just seeing it around me in stores or other people drinking it, I guess. But I have taken a few steps to realize I need to eat to live, not necessarily for pleasure or stress.

Even now, I was eating a salad (grilled chicken, balsamic vinegar, olive oil, seasonings) and stopped eating to type. By habit, when to finish it off, but I realize I'm FULL. This is new to me. Normally I would finish it just because I'm used to doing that. Now I realize I don't HAVE to finish it, even though I thought I may a good portion.

Definately recommend anyone struggling with weight to read and try this out. I'd be more than happy to share.

God Bless!!!

They also make a shaker product that you can use on fish, salads, etc.

I've been following the Rosedale plan since July 2005 and can't begin to tell you how magnificent I feel. My thinking is amazingly clear, my energy level is through the roof and, having struggled with my weight for forty years, I wouldn't turn back now for anything.

Keep on keeping on, David! You're off to a GREAT start and I salute your efforts...2006 will be YOUR year!

I believe it's the exact same book, but the hardback editions drop in price once the paperback comes out. If you want to peruse the info, you can probably get a copy from your local library...that's where I found it originally. I challenge anyone to at least try the regimen for 3 weeks (to get beyond cravings) and then decide. I think you'll be amazed!

Hi Everyone,

I started on the Rosedale diet 3 days ago. I am diabetic II, 6' 2" and 125 kg (275 lbs). Since I can measure my blood sugar levels, I took the chance on not taking my pills from day one. Bullseye results from day one, no more peeking or low blood sugar levels. I am still reading the book and loving every bit of it as it, for the first time every, is giving me an understanding for detailed issues about diabetis, especially the dangers etc. Had I been adviced about this a few years ago I would perhaps not have gotten cataracs on both my eyes.

The weight is down 2,4 lbs the two last days and I am convinced I'm going to achieve the same good results as everyone else. My cravings almost were gone from day one, although I had a mental craving when at the grocery store last evening, but did not give in.

When I have lost 20 lbs in a few weeks, I am going to convince my son and his wife (she's Thai and makes lost of yummy, but starchy thai food) that it's time to focus on HEALTH...

I ordered three more copies of the book yesterday :-) Too bad it's not available in Norwegian yet.

Hi Carol.

This "True Lemon", is there a certain manufacturer or store you get this from. Haven't seen it in the usual haunts (Wal-mart and Target (Super) Kroger). Maybe a chain of more natural stores like Whole Foods? Haven't been there in a bit, but I'll check it out some point this week.

BTW, progress slowed a bit because of back to back weekends of "events" parties, sports events, etc., so I'm down to a "pitiful" 4lbs/week loss...incredible! In the 280's and haven't been close to "sticking" to the plan. But, even when I didn't plan ahead and had no other options but to eat what was there, I did so "smartly", like skipping the bread from the burger, etc. There was one day, though, I did feel the effects of too may carbs. Felt very tired by the evening and my heartburn started to creep in. What's done is done so back to "work".

Back at home now and have planned my week, so should get back to better progress.

God Bless!!!

Hi, David ~ congratulations on your progress and also to our Norwegian compatriot, Bjorn, for his resolve as well! You are truly giving yourselves the gift of life and health. I'm at my goal weight now and am finding it very easy to maintain my habits. Socially, I focus on enjoying the company of friends and associates and not on the food and drinks. They don't seem to even notice anymore. (:))

By the way, if you do have cravings, try using Gymnema Sylvestre (standardized to 25% Gymnemic Acid). You will find a description of it in the Rosedale book and it is wonderful. A couple of weeks ago I had sudden body cravings for no particular reason and got it under control immediately with this herb. (I also use L-Glutamine powder and GTF chromium daily.)

In answer to the True Lemon question: it is distributed by Grand Brands, Baltimore, MD 21237 (1-866-88-LEMON). Their website is: www.truelemon.com

I have been buying the portable packets and shakers at Food Lion (a local grocery store), but it is also being sold at larger health food stores and other grocery chains (look for it at your Whole Foods). If you contact True Lemon they will tell you where it is available in your area.

Cheers, Grins and Blessings!

My husband was diagnosed with Type II diabetes 7 years ago, probably had it for several years before that. The "terrible twin" high blood pressure also goes along with that, high cholesterol, and tryglycerides! Although taking medication all these years, the call to the kitchen has always been stronger. He couldn't keep his weight down, worse yet, his sugar was always high. I found out about Dr. Rosedale's diet through a nutrition class I was taking. Being 50 pounds over-weight myself, I went home and told him about the diet. He was sceptical. After all, this went again everythingt the medical community had been telling him. I said to him "So how's that working for you?" So we started on the diet the next day. The first week, Jim's blood sugar was normal for the first time since the original diagnosis 7 years previously. We had a hard time the first week--that sugar craving wants to be fed bad! After the third week, we were starting to sail! I can resist the cookies/candy, etc. easily now. Where I had once resigned myself that I would probably just be a fat person, I now am looking forward to a smaller bathing suit for the beach this year. We've lost 12 and 16 pounds in 8 weeks! We're elated! Our alternative doctor told us that our bodies will heal themselves if given a good environment. Having completely lost his eyesight twice in the last two years, I believe Jim is already seeing improvement in his vision. Our energy is higher, we feel good. We tried some pizza last Saturday because we thought we missed it. We were both excited to say that it wasn't going to be missed again! We're finally eating to live instead of living to eat! That's victory!

I, too, was researching diabetes and found out about leptin last thursday. I bought the Rosedale book on Friday, read it yesterday, and started it today. I am documenting on my website.

I have type II diabetes, acid reflux, am about 80 lbs overweight, asthma, etc. I was hospitalized 3 times last year, twice for asthma and high blood sugar and once for pleurisy where I had to have chest surgery. My blood sugar has been over 200 mg/dl for a month and often over 300 mg/dl.

Just today it has dropped significantly. I can fast and have it not drop much so that is amazing. I am psyched by all the comments on this post and will try to remember to update when I can.
