The Warrior Diet

Sometimes, someone proposes a diet that totally contradicts everything you think you know.

Testosterone Nation has an interview with Penthouse magazine's editor Ori Hofmekler. His Warrior Diet is just that radical. Read an excerpt:

This diet is based on the assumption that your body has the instinct, like any other instinct, to control itself and to manipulate it very well. The other big advantage of this diet is that it takes advantage of something that no other diet does—the empty stomach. Exciting things can happen when your brain barrier is open and you can manipulate your hormones.

We already know that working out on an empty stomach in the morning stimulates more weight loss than if we ate before. This diet basically guarantees you six to eight hours a day of fat-burning hormones running in your body. Only in the ketogenic diet do we have a very similar affect, but the ketogenic diet has a lot of downsides to it. Again, it's based on an unnatural denial of instincts. Mentally, it can f*ck you up completely, and it could really f*ck up your ability to deal with stress. I think the mental deprivation plays a big part in what I should talk about.

In essence, the "Warrior Diet" will guarantee you a fat-burning hormone in your system for at least six to eight hours, which no other diet does. And last thing, the diet is based on a one meal a day principle. It's against all the rules. The meal is to be eaten at night. It could even be late at night; it doesn't matter. Ideally, it's right after a workout. It sounds kind of bizarre—you could raise a lot of questions about resting metabolism and basal metabolism, and you could argue that most people won't be able to handle it, and stuff like that.

If the Warrior Diet was so well researched, how come he simply buys his multi-nutrient support formula directly from Don Lemmon of http://www.donlemmon.com? Wouldn't you think if the Warrior Diet was so different than everything else, it would require a different vitamin formula? What happened to one meal a day giving you all you require to begin with? Make up your mind Warrior Diet!

You can eat just one meal a night with no supplements during the day. However most people after years of forcing down 3 - 6 meals a day of Meat and Potatoes don't digest food that well anyway.

The diet is not about depriving yourself of essential nutrients. You can eat light protein and raw fruits and vegetables during the day if your body tells you that you need it, as well as a whole source organic multivitamin to make sure your body is getting everything it needs.

This will all make sense if you read the book, you don't even need an open mind, because he explains it in such a simple way that it makes sense to any logical person. Open Minded or not.

Wow!
I've been on The Warrior Diet for quite sometime and I feel amazing! Their new nutrient blend is the best! It doesn't stink like another brand I've tried, this other brand also made me sick if I didn't eat it with food! The warrior brand nutrient also gives me an energy boost withen 15min of taking it!!! I will never eat another way. Nothing is off limits and no more of that food separation either. Go Warrior!!!

I've been on the Warrior diet for almost two years. It's the best thing that's ever happened to my body. My weight is finally under my control!!! I have twice as much energy as i used to and i don't have to waste my time eating throughout the day and then complain when I lose my energy to digesting the food. Dave dear, in the book it says to eat fresh fruit or vegetables during the day for enzymes and you can also use supplements. I've never felt more connected to my body. Thanx Ori!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've been on the Warrior Diet for nearly 4 weeks and I feel fantastic!!! My energy is over the roof! My concentration at school is amazing. I am extremely alert, I never get moody and I never stress. My memory has skyrocketed. I play tennis heaps and hill sprint, I don't need food for energy as Ori states. Food is a DEPRESSANT, it blocks your brain barrier leading to fatigue and cravings. DO NOT EAT BREAKFAST, you eliminate detox, you block your brain barrier as stated above, and you do not manipulate your glucagon and growth hormones to keep you YOUNG. DETOX, activate your Sympathetic Nervous System, eat without guilt at night and by far, LISTEN TO YOUR BODY at night and fight your hunger during the day. Also your Protein Utilization increases by 160% when you undereat during the day!! We must respect our biological clocks and wake up our Primal Genes that our ancestors have, live like true warriors and feel the benefits. "Eat like a Warrior, Live like a Warrior". Your body is not a machine, your metabolism is so sophisticated that you can recreate it every day. Eating at night helps you sleep by producing trytophan, serotonin and boosts your metabolism and anabolism (replenishing your glycogen stores and build muscle naturally).

I have been on the warrior diet for a week now, and i have lost four stone. during the day i eat half a sandwhich, and at night ieat the k.f.c family bucket for £12.99. i have made a massive improvement and i would like to say thanks.

Only a week and you have lost 56 pounds? What did you really mean to say? I'd really like to know how much weight one truly can lose in a week on this style of eating.

Reply
plynch

She hasn't answered, so... In the first week of doing the diet seriously myself, I lost between 4-5 pounds.

Many people experience the same kind of thing. During the first two weeks or so, your body is adjusting and compensates greatly during the day, burning more glycogen stores(fat) than usual.

Then after two or three weeks you should balance out to about 2 pounds a week, depending on how much of which Macronutrients(Protein, Fat, Carbs) you eat in your main meal.

I have been on WD for over a week. It was a bit difficult the 1st 2 days, followed by improved feeling of well being. It also seems my strength and endurance is up and recovery from exercise is faster.

The only question I still wonder is the fat loss aspect of WD. Subjectively it seems I may have loss a bit but my weight seem to have increased a little or unchanged. I have been eating 1 hugh meal per day 1 or 2 apples/pears in the day (sometimes). Should I be patient or is my metabolism diminished or held steady by this diet?

I am 5'5" 180 lbs 37 yr male. I desire to lose as much body fat as possible. Gaining muscle simultaneously?

Hope to get some answers/help from the more experienced folks out there.

To gain muscle while simutaneously losing body fat, dieting no matter the results is simply not enough. Partnered with resistance exercises, this diet will earn you a much more efficient metabolism. Remember the more muscle mass you have the more calories you body burns.

Sorry, another thought - fundamentally, it just seems like input vs output of energy should govern the draw into fat reserves. In the single meal, I think somedays it could be as high as over 3000 calories! In other words, am I really suppose to eat a lot but lower calories items. This way the quantity of food could still force to the metabolic rate up (??I am purely guessing)

Up to now, I had been eating a lot of buffets w no regard to how much calories. Of course I could eat as much wheaties as I could stomach and ...

hi guys,

First, from what I have read elsewhere, losing weight on the WD without carb/fat cycling or exercise takes a little more time than a week...
Second, the fact that you eat 3000 calories is actually what's supposed to help you burn fat. If you eat 200-300 calories per meal, your body tries to spend 200-300 calories during its daily activities. So if you eat 3000 Calories your body will try to spend 3000 calories (instead of the 200) during its activities.
Third, eating something else than buffet (of course it depends on the buffet...) would be a good idea. The best thing is to cook your own food, it takes longer but it's much more rewarding and will allow you to know exactly just what you put in your body.

Finally, I recommend to anyone interested in learning more on the intricacies of the WD to read Ori's Maximum Muscle, Minimum Fat. Although the book does require a basic knowledge of biochemistry and biology. Anyone can still get more details about both the diet and the exercise routines, though.

I have been on the warrior diet for two months now and I feel great. I am lactating and the babe doesn't seem to notice the shift in supply. He just nurses more in the evening. My husband got me hooked after he lost over 30 pounds in just 6 months. I have more energy, patience, and I have even noticed a hormonal balance that my whole family has enjoyed. Back to the baby...he is 17 months old, so it's not like I am his main food supply. I have already lost a pant size, and I am almost in my pre pregnancy pants.....I love this diet and I am hooked. I love to indulge myself in the evening and eat a brownie...in moderation of course. I recommend this diet(or way of eating) to anyone!!

Many hunter gatheres eat this way. They walk, gather, hunt, build and play all day, then feast at sunset. They eat a alot of fat, in the form of insects, and organ meats or dairy if they keep animals (not really hunter gathering.). They are beautifully formed and happy.
I eat a very high fat diet of dairy. But I always eat small amounts. I have a baby and we eay together. So I eat way more often now. We eat butter, cheese, eggs and bacon with fruit and vegetables, and sprouted sourdough bread. We are plump and shiny (skin and hair,) with great immune systems.

Has anyone experienced difficulty going to sleep at night while on the WD?
I've been on the WD for three weeks and have tons of energy , went from 213 to 204 lbs at 6'1", gone from 18.5% body fat to 14.5%. I love every aspect of the "program" except I am still wired at night.
Tried upping the carbs at the overeating meal to the point where I've been eating 6 slices of multi whole grain bread. Still wired.....
Any ideas?

Hey Matt

Congratulations on the body fat loss. That's awesome for 3 weeks. I'm back on the diet after much time off and I found that the first few nights were exactly what you described. Totally wired and unable to go to sleep until about 11 or 12.

I tried something different last night. I ate dinner at a much later time than I usually do. I went to bed two hours after that and I had the best night of sleep I've had in ages. I also did 2 things I don't usually do: I ate pasta (moderate size serving) and drank minerals with my water.

Yesterday was a workout day so higher carbs was o.k. but not sure I'll be doing the pasta again tonight. Maybe a smaller serving of sweet potatos will work on non-workout days and I will definitely be eating later and drinking minerals again. I'll let you know if that works.

What type of bread are you having?

I am new to the warrior diet, I may have been doing it incorrectly because during the day I felt like I had low blood sugar or something... I have purchased three of Ori's books and read them but need help still. Anyow I am a full time student with a 6 month old baby. I am in nursing school and it is about 60 hrs per week so I know I need a lot of energy. I feel tired a lot and also when I go from sittin to standing I feel dizzy which I think is r/t low blood sugar possibly.

If there is anyone following the warrior died and they have a very good understand of how to practice is correctly would they email me at corbinauti@yahoo.com

I would definately like to know what people are doing during the day, particularly people with a hectic schedule. What do they eat during the undereating phase including drinks?

Take Care,
Auti

Provided you've been seen by a physician and you and your baby's health are o.k., here are my personal methods from what I got from reading The Warrior Diet...

I am a US Marine which should obviously tell you I keep a pretty hectic schedule. I lift weights two to three days a week and run pretty much all the rest (up to 20+ miles a week)... I've been on the WD for about 3 months and haven't had any problems with energy or recovered quicker after workouts from any other type of eating.
I take a few minutes every evening and fill a small sandwich bag with various items, take it with me in the morning and make it last the entire next day until "the feast" begins. Items like baby carrots, raw broccoli, cheddar cheese squares, strawberries, cauliflower (kinda yucky raw, except when you're starving), grapes, and occaisionally a boiled egg. I drink only black coffee, water, V8, and sometimes milk all day and keep other fruits & nuts (bananas, oranges, apples, raw almonds/peanuts, mangos, kiwi, etc.) on-hand in case any hunger pangs get the better of me. Sometimes I treat myself to some cottage cheese or plain yogurt to go with the fruit. The mixture I avoid with the items deals only with the higher proteins like nuts, eggs, & cheeses; I won't have more than one type of protein that isn't naturally occuring in the fruit or vegetable in a day. Overall, really isn't much work and if I eat a very small amount of these things from time to time I can control my hunger until dinner and the body stays extremely energized. The Warrior Instinct is always in-tact when the "over-eating" phase begins and I eat like nobody's business; I'm only avoiding the blatantly obvious bad-foods like chips, french-fries, sodas, candybars, etc... Good luck!

The Warrior diet is nothing new. The concept was actually taken and modified from the Black Muslims, Nation of Islam in the US. The Nation of Islam followers are required to eat one meal per day and nothing between. This guy just keeps making millions of dollars from our(Africans) culture's past lifestyle. Haven't they taken enough from us? If you read his article on Bodybuilding.com, he actually mentions it.

The Warrior diet is indeed not new. It was the diet of Paleo man. Ori is not claiming it as his own design, but is rather pushing the warrior in each of us to fight through the commercialism and time of day diet routines that have been forced on us since the first flour mill. This was the start of obesity, the modern machines. Made to make our lives easier, not better. The way I see it, anything worth having is worth working for because things that come easy have no true value. My two cents, don't spend it all in one place.

Exactly! By using the "logic" of some of the replies here, you'd have to also clonclude that high school history teachers are claiming that they "invented" some of the subjects they cover in class.

Ori's book is just telling us how ancient man once ate and "exercised". What we know is that many of today's diseases did not exist, nor did tooth decay etc. hundreds and thousands of years ago and that our modern lifestyle is the cause of most of our current health problems. He never claims that he invented the concept, just that he's discovered through research the "old" way of existing and how to best copy those methods.

I have been on the WD for about 5 weeks now. After four weeks, I had lost 2.8% of body fat and 7.5lb. But I also increased my weekly work outs and switched to Controlled Fatigue Training.

In the beginning, I felt my blood sugar decrease during lunch hours and I was sleepy in the afternoon (which could also be a result of not enough sleep and hard work outs). Either way, I do not have those problems any more. I also eat a lot less during the day then in the beginning.

I still find it hard preparing food according to Ori's suggestions. I live in the country. There is no health food store anywhere close and our only grocery store in town does not even sell organic food.

I have saved a lot of money and time since I started this diet. It amazes me how people are slaves to the food they eat and how out of touch they are with their bodies. I never want to go back there again.

I've been on it for about a month or two now and I've lost 30 pounds. I eat one small-medium meal a night, less than 2,000 calories. That's the ticket to lower weight on this, you still have to lower calories, and stick to healthier foods.

Every time I come across somebody writing about the warrior diet I'm surprised all over again.

We're now almost 5 years after this post was written. I have yet to meet anybody that has not had great results with the warrior diet, myself included, yet it still one of the lesser known plans out there.

I'm glad to hear that everybody that is doing it is having such good results. Enjoy the weightloss and extra energy!

Nathaniel..I'm no expert but do you weight train? I would suggest getting in there and doing no more then 1/2 hour of compound type exercises(squats, dips, etc.) and go at it hard enough to do no more then 10 reps. Make sure at the nightly meal you are getting plenty of protein and fat. And possibly add in a high protein/carb type thing to eat right after you work-out. But like I said, I'm not a expert..I just research a lot :)
I've unknowingly done the WD twice..once about 4 years ago and I lost a TON of weight, I was extremely toned (didn't even really work-out except for jogging and pilates everyday)and people would always ask if I was a dancer. It was great. Then I started eating 6x/day like they say to and became obessive with food. I thought I was going crazy because all I did was think about food and I'd restrict myself so much that I would end up binging on everything in site. Sick. I've gained about 15-20lbs fluctuating in 3 years and have 'dieted' for 3 years. Found IF and the WD a week ago and this is it..my eating style for life. I finally feel free from the food and I can eat like a champ at night. I've lost 2.5lbs in a week!

I've been on this diet for 2 days and have lost 1/2 pound, which I'm really excited about. I do have this strange tenderness in my breasts but I'm hoping that will go away. At this rate I hope to lose the 108 lbs I need to lose by summer of next year. My husband has agreed to buy me a vacation to Wasilla, Alaska, if I do lose the weight. I'm looking forward to wearing a bikini again!
What can you drink during the day except water? I have been drinking iced coffee.

I feel like I've found the fountian of youth. Been on wd for one week. Sleeping pills are in the trash, fat is dropping off, walking each day is a recreation instead of chore, mental clarity is sooo much better. After 4o years of forcing food down my throat during the day to "up my metabolism" or trying longer fasts that exhausted me and left me doubting my inner instincts to abstain, I've finally found the middle road between those two extremes. My sinuses are clearing up and my breathing is improving. What a relief!!!

I used to follow this for years without knowing that it had a specific name; just thought it made sense. I find that when I eat breakfast I am hungrier throughout the day. I always laughed when they would say those who ate breakfast weighed less, considering I gained weight every time I added breakfast back in my diet. After 2 years of trying it the "healthy" way and 40lbs heavier, I am ready to go back to the way of eating that fit me best.
