The Maple Syrup Diet Fad

Celebrity + weight loss + unusual product = instant fad.

Beyoncé Knowles claims she lost 20 pounds by consuming a concoction made up of maple syrup, lemon juice, water and cayenne pepper. Of course it's not just any maple syrup but an organic "Madal Bal Natural Tree" syrup (UK distributor / USA distributor). Consequently sales of the product are soaring (src).

The maple syrup is part of a "detox" or fast.

According to Beyonce:

"I lived on water, cayenne pepper and maple syrup for 14 days. It was tough; everyone was eating and I was dying."

These kind of diets are foolhardy indeed, and it is not the first time that maple syrup has been mentioned by someone of celebrity status.

Without laboring the point - living on a maple syrup concoction for days on end will probably leave you: weak, with less muscle, a lot less glycogen (in the form of fluid loss), and probably very grumpy. Give this a wide berth.

What did Beyonce do after enduring her maple syrup ordeal?

"After that I ate waffles, fried chicken, cheeseburgers, french fries, everything I could find.

"That was the best time of my life. I've gained twelve pounds."

NOTE: You can get the full details of the Master Cleanse here.

lol She looks like a stick in that photo.

It's very unhealthy to shock your body like that. I still vote for a Weight Watchers type of diet for a safe weight loss.

This cleanse was invented back in the 1940's.

I'm doing this cleanse right now and am on day five. You are not starving your body on this cleanse, you're taking in 1600 calories a day from the maple syrup.

My skin is clearer and as long as I have this lemonade with me and drink it when I start to feel like I need to have some I have plenty of energy to get through the day. I have not had any headaches. You also drink a quart of warm water with two teaspoons of sea salt in the morning which tastes like chicken soup without the chicken. This helps to clean out the digestive tract.

Two years ago I did a liver flush after which my lactose intolerance was gone. I think it got rid of the bad bacteria in my intestinal track and after the flush I ate yogurt to replenish the good bugs :)

The drink consists of 1 cup maple syrup, 1/2 cup lemon juice, 1/2 t cayanne pepper and 60 oz water.
1600 calories.

You can drink as much additional water as you like but can't eat or drink anything else.

If you have been eating a proper diet you will probably not lose as much weight as claimed in the fifteen day period. The weight you loose is all the junk in your intestines and extra water weight. No dehydration as you are consuming at least 3 qt. water a day.

Additionally,

When you get off the cleanse you are supposed to do it over the course of a few days. You can read about it on wiki.

After you are on the cleanse you may notice yourself wanting food when you're not hungry, like when passing a fast food place or see a commercial. If you weren't doing it you may have just consumed calories for nothing.

One of the benefits of this cleanse is it gives your brain time to reset so it can be easier to change your eating habits when you get off it.

yay im on the diet too lol. and i cant believe you use a whole half teaspoon of cayenne pepper! i can barely stand a fourth lol. and i use a lot more water (8 cups to be exact) and double the lemon juice. mom wants to get it into my head that it tastes like iced tea but its not working lol. :| i dont know if it makes a difference (the different proportions, i mean.). oh and in the mornings, i just drink a mug of water (that has been boiled) with the juice of 1 or 2 lemons, as opposed to your 2 teaspoons of sea salt. do you think this makes a difference?

If you're eating, you're not doing a cleanse. A cleanse/fast means no food. You're losing weight because you're skipping meals. If you don't do the internal salt water bath, the laxative tea, and absolutely no food for a min. of 10 days, it's not an "alternate" master cleanse, it's just you drinking gross lemonade. You'll lose weight but that's the only benefit you'll get, which isn't the point of the cleanse.

I am currently on the master cleanse diet - but there are different variations and you can eat. I am replacing breakfast and lunch and eating a regular dinner. In one week I have lost 4 pounds. I only want to lose another 8 pounds, so it works for me. I felt I needed the protein and didn't want to completely starve myself the 10 days although I can see the benefit of that also. That option, just wouldn't work for me. This way, I won't have to ease off. I can just maintain at the desired weight.

Lynda, can you do just the cayenne and the lemon juice without the syrup.?

Can you drink alcohol or no? I go out on the weekends and have a good time... just curious though. I assume the answer is no.. but thought I'd ask.

Reply

NO WAY! Alcohol is extremely bad for your body, it's called intoxicated because Alcohol is pure toxins. The whole point of the cleanse is to DEtoxify your body. Not only that but all alcohol turns into sugar, which then turns into fat. And it usually takes up to 3 days for your body to recover from the toxins.

Are you stupid?

A cup of maple syrup? - Don't be ridiculous-

You are drinking nearly as many calories within this drink as you would do if you were eating normally! This is not what you are supposed to be doing.

2 spoonfuls of maple syrup is the required dose of maple syrup for the mixture. (20ml)

The whole purpose of the cleanse/diet/detox- whatever you would like to call it- is to rid the body of toxins.

You are consuming far too many calories for this cleanse to be effective for you.

It is at the end of the day a fast like programme. In order to be effective, you should be consuming less that 500/550 calories a day.

The problem I'm reading here is people keep calling the lemon/maple cleanse a diet. It's a cleanse - meaning it's meant to get the toxins out of your body. Do you loose weight during it? Yes!! But that's not the reason for drinking it. It does a great job at cleaning out the intestines and getting the "junk" out of your system. I have a friend that was on it for 40 days (says she never felt better in her life). It wasn't until the 30th day that the toxins started really coming out.

Please use the correct terminology. NOT A FAD DIET but a CLEANSE.

Reply
Danny

40 days, that is the most insane thing i've ever heard. Your friend would be near death and im pretty sure that would qualify as an eating disorder.

Reply
candice

No they wouldnt be near death because of the combination of all the ingredients. The maple syrup alone would keep you going. I have heard of alot of people doing the cleanse for long periods of time. I am just starting mine, but I have done this before. You do lose weight and you cleanse your system. I use the laxative tea instead of the sea salt though. Some people have a hard time with this tea, but I never have. Personally I like the taste of the tea, so it works best for me. Good luck to you all though.

OMG! Some just seem to be "stuck"...
This is NOT a diet!!!!
It is to rid your body of parasites and toxins!!! You know, those worms and other "Bugs" that live in your intestines!!! If Byonce used it as a diet-then she was wrong!
It cleans your inside of bugs and toxins- THAT is you do it...or don't do it!!!
It is NOT starving!!! At all!
What's wrong with people??? Are they "stuck on stupid"? Really????!!!
I don't know why people keep refering to it as a diet or how it is starving themselves. Dumb! Others have stated soooooo many times, that it is not...but they keep on-Don't compare it to other diets...it's not a friggin diet!

Reply

You are an idiot. Anything that makes people lose weight, will be used more likely than not as a "diet." You may wish to simply CLEANSE your system, and that is your prerogative, but don't be an ass because other people use it to their benefit in other ways.

Reply

I disagree with you. This is a crazy way to diet. If you want to diet and loose weight then become a vegetarian. This is to detox the body..and yeah a part of that is loosing weight to rid the body of fat and the toxins stored in the fat.

But if you think you can do this for 10 days loose weight and then go back to MickyD's then you are in for a very rude weight gain surprise. The way to keep weight off after this cleanse is to go vegetarian or vegan...

Sure people will use it to lose weight, but onely because they don't have the will power to just adopt a long term diet change..

I am 165 and need a good 10 pounds off by then. I do however want to still drink coffee and cream with equal PLUS do the fast. Do you think I would lose? I know one thing, it gotta be better than the overeating I have BEEN doing, right? comment back if you can today please. Thanks. Felice.

This is typical of most diet fads. Of course you ll lose weight if you starve yourself - What happens after that? hm-mm...your metabolism has decreased which makes it easier to gain weight later on in life plus you have not addressed the core issues, thus you'll never learn how to deal with your problem.
Starvation causes more weight gain in the long term (due to decreased metabolism, thus the body stores all the fat it gets later on)- weight issues need a lifestyle change not a change from big macs to maple syrup for a few days.

Reply
gnulnx

exactly which is why this shouldn't be treated as a diet. It's a CLEANSE.

Please everyone, I think you all have a point, however, I have the book which my brother in Canada gave me. It is called "The Master Cleanser" and is nicknamed "The Lemonade Diet". However, when you read the book you will see the main purpose is for HEALTH reasons. People who have ulcers have done the Master Cleanser and it has not only helped them but got rid of the ulcer. It gives you a cleanse throughout your body. You are supposed to have 2 tbsp organic lemon (juice), 2 tbsp Maple syrup and a pinch of Cayenne pepper, together with boiling water or cold. You can have up to 12 mugs/glasses per day. The purpose of the Maple syrup is because it has the most incredible nutrients in it. The purpose of the lemon is also its healing properties which is alkaline (not acidic) and the cayenne pepper cleans the wall of the intestines etc. You flush all toxins out of your body. They say the minimum amount of days should be 10 days and maximum 40 days. Yes, you may do it to lose weight however, you should not stay on it as long as 40 days. One of the most important parts is coming off the cleanse, which takes at least 3 days to introduce fruit and veg. I suggest that you get hold of the book before embarking on this cleanse. Hope this helps a lot of you. Wishing you all the best and good health.

Reply
lozdom

Okay, the reason for the cayenne pepper is to keep your metabolism increased.... i think people are commenting on this without actually looking at any sort of evidence, if you look at what beyonce said... she lost 20 pounds and after only gained 14 pounds back, she was still 6 pounds lighter...

She couldn't wait to get of of it :-) If I had to live off of that for 14 days I'd be eating a lot of waffles, fries and fried chicken too.
mmm waffles :_)
Stars are often told they're fat when they're not.

If you deprive yourself of calories you will loose weight but it's not healthy and you end up with depervation binges.

I agree. I don't eat unhealthy foods (e.g. sugar, fast food, fried foods, fatty meats) and so I really don't feel that its necessary to submit my body to cleanses. However, the benefits of cayenne pepper are too many to not SUPPLEMENT your already healthy diet. Who said you can't eat fresh produce and lean, organic meats while sipping on this drink throughout the day? I'm not after weight loss..just the health benefits. Good luck out there!

Reply

joanne. get you're sh*t together.

a) 1600 calories is not that that much
and believe it or not. starve refers to not eating. eating and drinking are different. weirddddddd i know

b) anything that makes you loose weight is considered a diet.. does it make you loose weight? Yes.

c) yayyy good job! its also a "cleanse"!

d) "fatass"? really? how bout we actually go exercise. start running everyday and you can eat whatever you want. i run everyday and "pig out on meats and doughnuts and chips". i pretty much have no body fat, low cholesterol, and low blood pressure.

moral of the story, start exercising, and stop KILLING YOURSELF BY NOT EATING

Weight issues are often psychological and people; even thow very ditermined; often belive they will fail thus do. Posative motivetion to detox will help people feel better thus intern motivate them to try to loose weight and stick to it long term. The slipping when on a diet or detox is not an issue, the important issue is that at least overweight people are trying to improve there weight issues which should be comended as they are atempting to change bad habbits that have been lernt over the cource of there lives. statisticly they they will eventualy achive there goals if they keep trying. so please behave like adults and try to provide posative and helpfull motivating advice.

Maple syrup diet, cabbage soup diet, they're all the same kind of fad diet that will work in the short term because of a huge drop in calorie intake, but like everyone else has said, it won't last because of slowed metabolism and binge eating due to feeling starved.

Why does Beyonce need to lose weight anyway? Who wants to look like a stick figure (unless it's your natural bodytype) when you could have curves like that!

Specifically Beyonce used the cleanse to lose lbs as there were only 2 weeks between shooting Deena Jones as a teen and Deena Jones as an adult. The scenes where Deena is an adult were shot first, therefore Beyonce used the cleanse in order to shoot Deena's younger, skinnier scenes just 2 weeks later.

I've heard of that diet...sounds NASTY! I bet she was cranky the whole time and if she just gained 12 lbs back after doing it, what was the point??? She wasn't really ever fat, just curvy. It's so dumb when celebrities do this kind of crap to lose weight because then EVERYONE else wants to do it too, even if they KNOW it's not that effective and it was a tortuous diet to go on. I'd rather enjoy the journey to a skinny me (and I did enjoy it, let me tell you) by eating moderately and working out and get there slowly instead of doing a stupid fad to lose a bunch of weight quickly and then gaining most of it back.

Reply

Hi Spectra,

Like Asia said before, Beyonce lost weight for her role in Dreamgirls. If she was determent to keep her weight down like some other celeberties that are obsessed with they're weight, she wouldnt have gained 12pounds by eating fried chicken.

Reply

of course, if she wanted to stay like a stick she would not have bothered with all the junk! anyway, the original idea for this diet is to detoxify the body, the weight loss is just a side effect which comes back on anyway. She didnt do it for anything other than her role in the film, if she was really doin it for herself than why would she bother if the weight comes back on? kinda defeats the object really doesnt it?

Oh no, the detox is back. All of your points are spot on! What some people don't seem to know is that some studies suggest that so-called "detox" process can actually release some poisons into a blood stream. Anyway, it is a long story that I plan to talk about soon.

yeah, i don't understand why people don't do a little research and get on a healthy cleanse, if that's what they want.

if you're just looking to lose weight and NOT particularly to cleanse your intestines, you can just count calories and work out. you can easily burn 1000 calories a day by finding out how many you burn per day, and eating 1000 less calories than that... these calories should come from nutritional foods like lean meat (lean turkey, boneless skinless chicken breast), fruits and veggies and whole grains. burning 1000 calories a day is a loss of about 3 pounds per week. you might even lose more than that, who knows. when i did this i lost way more than i should have, i THINK because i am conservative about how many calories i'm actually burning. keep in mind, burning 1000 calories a day is even extreme, but if you do it carefully (read labels) it can still be good for you.

this cleanse diet, with the maple syrup- think about the nutrients you're depriving yourself of. your body eats muscle when it doesn't have enough protein-- guess what your heart is made out of? and that's just protein- think about the vitamins and minerals you're missing out on. i'm sure you won't die after 14 days of malnutrition- but it is NOT good for you.

if you REALLY want to cleanse in a healthy way- become a "rabbit", so to speak lol. eat vegetables, fruits, whole and very complex grains, and BEANS for protein. lots of water and whatever tea you need for the cleanse- you'll do great and not want to pass out.

seriously, guys, please don't start a diet where you are starving yourself. it doesn't work in the long run, but more importantly, it is really really bad for you. if beyonce had to lose a ton of weight in 2 weeks for a role, i understand that- that's her job. but for normal people, don't be crazy, especially when there are healthy ways of getting similar results (usually the results are actually better because you can keep the weight off for longer).

Hi Jessica,

Thanks for posting such a lucid response. People really should research the basics of proper nutrition (and exercise) before adopting a particular diet, but it appears that relatively few of them do.

Several years ago I wanted to lose some weight I'd gained over the Christmas holidays, so I devised my own weight-loss regimen: for breakfast, I'd have a fruit smoothie (consisting of low-fat yogurt, a raw egg, fresh fruit, and a tablespoon of olive oil), plus a multivitamin and supplements that included cayenne, gingko, evening primrose oil, and flaxseed oil. I'd then have an 8-ounce glass of fruit juice, vegetable juice, or water every hour, on the hour, until dinner. (Drinking so much fluid made for many trips to the bathroom throughout the day, but the upside of this was that I never grew hungry because my stomach was always felt full.) Dinner consisted of a spinach salad laden with a variety of vegetables and nuts (no dressing), as well as another round of the above-mentioned multivitamin and supplements. The result? I lost ten pounds in two weeks.

I subsequently visited my doctor and had a check-up. Everything checked out positively, but perhaps the biggest surprise was my blood test: the results were, in my doctor's words, "perfect." Out of, as I recall, twenty-one separate parameters, each one was indeed perfect. I resumed my normal, vegetarian diet afterward and have maintained my desired weight ever since. (I've also given up overeating during holidays.)

Of course, the fact that this quickie weight-loss diet worked for me doesn't necessarily mean it will work for other people. I think it's okay to experiment with different regimens AFTER doing the proper research; and I'd recommend having a check-up before starting a diet, followed by a second check-up afterward so as to have some idea of the diet's impact on your body.

Lastly, because an individual's self-perception of what constitutes proper weight isn't always accurate, I'd also recommend determining your Body-Mass Index (BMI) before starting a weight-loss diet. It's easy to do so -- just visit any website that has a BMI calculator and enter your height and current weight; it will tell you whether your weight is too high, too low, or right on the mark.

I hope this was helpful!

Good luck, everyone,
Patrick

It really is common sense to be fit and healthy. Eat a variety of whole foods in moderation. Exercise each day for 30-60 minutes. This can be as simple as taking a brisk walk to start off. Get in a routine to exercise. Clean out your food pantry. If the "bad" food is not at your fingertips, you will have much more success.
I followed all these steps and in 12 months dropped 62 pounds and increased my fitness level ten fold. Now this lifestyle change is permanent and the results will also be permanent.
Good Luck to all as we all search for the right path for ourselves.

The whole point of "The Master Cleanse", popularized by Stanley Burroughs, is too rid your body of toxins and give your digestive system a rest. It was never meant to be used as a diet for weight loss, although of course weight loss is a nice side effect. It should be used as a transition into a healthier lifestyle.

Well I have to say she does look fit and skinny but this is just another way to trick your body into losing weight. This method might work for several people but for the majority it is just another fad diet that I believe is wrong. I don't know if I should keep saying this but diets are short-term and healthy eating and exercise is long-term in changing your body's physique.

Beyonce has to look that way in her head. It's the only thing she can think for all those videos she does.
Regarding her looking skinny: Most of it is Metabolism (some are better than others) and the other thing is how much does she work out at the gym?

She's probably one of these types of people that goes 6x a week (too much really) Average you should do: 2 days Cardio, 3 days circuit and free weights. Especially if you are trying to lose weight.

Don't forget to eat though. A person should on average have 3 meals a day PLUS every 2-3 hours should be on snacking something healthy. It works for me, I've lost 20lbs in 2 weeks go figure and I'm not starving myself.

Off Topic Question:
My question is with those hair commercials are those models actually using that actual shampoo that they are advertising or not. I'll never know.

Reply
youranswer

the answer is no. they get a protein conditioning treatment done on their hair, and then they spray it with olive oil to get that incredible shine. plus LOTS of lighting gets every shiny detail on camera. never believe what you see on TV.

as far as the weight loss for Beyonce... she definitely likes being an "in-shape" curvy girl, if she was doing the detox to lose weight for her roll, she clearly states she gained the weight back. I believe the detox will work if you use it for the right reasons... after it's complete your stomach is smaller and it is harder to eat heavy foods, so when coming back to eating food, eat light food, lots of fruits and vegetables, and keep up the healthy eating habits!
