Why Keep Soda In Schools?

Back in 2003, the President of Coca-cola Enterprises, John Alm, made the following statement:

“The school system is where you build brand loyalty”

So, while Coca Cola (and others) build brand loyalty, the health of our children will suffer.

Here is a list of the kind of arguments people will use when defending sales of soda in schools. Go see this article at Informed Eating – for the full details of these hilarious and familiar set of counter-arguments:

  • Schools Need the Money from Soda Sales
  • It’s all About Choices / Children Need to Learn How to Choose
  • This is a Complex Problem / There is No Scientific Basis
  • Schools Should Have Local Control
  • Exercise is Really the Solution
  • Parents are Really the Problem
  • Students Will Go Outside to Buy Sodas Anyway
  • Soda Companies Already Take Responsibility
  • Miscellaneous Arguments: the Importance of Teaching Values

There are no good reasons to sell sugary soda’s in schools.

you essay will be very bad if you cannot learn to spell and write with correct grammar. maybe you should try learning instead of worrying about whether your soda is taken away or not.

This is insane. You don’t let dumb kids decide what’s good for them. What you do is take away the soda, cookie and other sugar-filled junk to detoxify these sugar addicted kids. Then, you give them healthy things to drink like whole milk. Then watch the hyperactivity and ADHD magically vanish and learning begin again.

Hello. I am a 7th grader at Henderson Middle. I am doing a persuasive essay on this. I find these comments helpful. Thank you.

As for my own views, while I know sodas are unhealthy, I DON’T care. They taste good. So my opinion will be largely against taking sodas out of schools. In fact, when I first started middle school, they had already taken all caffiene-filled drinks out of my school. The only had PowerAde, Lemonade, OrangeAde, and stuff. Then those were removed halfway down the school year, and were replaced with “healthy” fruit juices that, while providing some nutrients, had more sugar than PowerAde. Lol.

I think that if kids were educated about sodas rather than forced to drink drinks that have more sugar anyways, they would, um, hate school less. They would be more energized. Like Anita said, would you rather the students be asleep or hyper?

I think that we should sell some suger drinks but also have a lot of diet drinks too.

i know what you mean. We should limit the amount we give out to kids. Also i think we should get parental signatures at the beging of the year to say that the kids can have sodas. Also parents need to work on keeping healthy at home and restrict there because that is were the real problem is

Then what if students fall asleep in class. Would you raather them be hyper or fall asleep in class?

If they sell soda let kids have it they can complain about when there fat tell them they drank crap and schools should either stop the soda at school or dont bother…? This is true but soda ist the MAIN problem its the food they serve in cafs.

It is strange that Steaz Sparkling Teas are sold in schools when it has 135 calories in 12 oz can and 35 grams of sugars from sugar cane. And it is carbonated. A few drops of acerola can get a product, even soda, into children’s hands.

It is available in Iowa schools where Senator
Tom Harkin is from. It’s ironic because Senator Harkin initiated better nutrition in schools. Empty sugar calories will keep next generation of dentists and cardiologists in Mercedes and B’mers.

There is a common perception that soda is bad and unhealthy which is true. However, People also need to realize that Powerade and Gatorade are just as bad as Sodas. Like Dr. Pepper and Coca-Cola,they are just not carbonated. Both ruin teeth if consumed regularly, and I am a sophomore in high school and I notice that people regularly don’t drink soda, but instead drink Powerade which is just as bad because they don’t do any sports. Powerade has almost as much sugar as Soda and it doesn’t help people who don’t exercise at all. This is a slippery slope because if schools cancel sodas they also have to cancel Gatorade and Powerade, which will cause athletes to resort to water which sometimes does not hydrate me as much as I want to be.

Sugar is ok when moderated, but do drinks with added sugar belong in schools? Most of the industry leaders like cadburry, coke and pepsi are not selling carbonated , sugared beverages in schools.

I am all for entrepreneurship, but shouldn’t all brands in the beverage industry, in an effort to show our industry the integrity it deserves, lead by example. It is important the beverage industry put aside our differences and stand together when it comes to the welfare of our children.

If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck – if Steaz sparkling green tea has 23 grams of cane sugar per serving (35 grams per bottle) and is carbonated, then it must be s_d_.

Do we really want to bring government ratings in to our industry because we could not police ourselves? This will happen if we are not careful.

As a member of the beverage industry we have made a pledge to keep carbonation and sugar out of schools. Please understand – carbonation and sugar equal soda.

Then I saw that Steaz is selling their drinks in schools and I realized that even though the major players in our industry are discontinuing the practice with respect for our children, this brand is adding ingredients and saying it is safe to sell its beverages in schools. If we as an industry don’t start regulating our industry, then we will have even more government intervention. Please, if you are a distributor, do not distribute soda to schools – even soda with a different name.

I agree with Ralph. I’m very concerned about drinks that are carbonated and loaded with sugar but are passed off under marketing gimmicks like “sparkling green tea”

When in doubt look at the nutrition label. If it has sugars and is carbonated you can call it anything you want, but it still is soda. And sodas don’t belong in schools!

Each 12-ounce soft drink contains approximately 10 teaspoons of sugar and 150 calories. Drinking just one can of soda a day increases a child’s risk of obesity by 60%

I wonder about these new sodas that have names like “sparkling juice”, “sparkling green tea” and “gently carbonated” I just began shopping in the Whole Earth Pantry for my families cereal and was surprised to find healthy sodas their too.

THEY WERE NOT HEALTHY. They all had levels of carbs and sugars equal to Coke. A rose by any other name still smells as sweet – and these new beverages are junk. I just hope policy makers understand good marketing spins and can read nutrition labels.
