All New Weight Watchers: WW Freestyle

Once again Weight Watchers gives itself a makeover. Over the past few years, we’ve seen Weight Watchers 360°, Beyond the Scale, and the pointsplus system.

Forget all that. Weight Watchers have made some unprecedented changes to their already successful program and called it WW Freestyle.

Freestyle takes the bold step of assigning zero points to over 200 foods (including eggs, corn, all fish, all seafood, skinless chicken breast, skinless turkey breast, non-fat plain yogurt, beans, peas, lentils and tofu). These foods do not need to be tracked or measured! This clever change (based on nutritional and lifestyle research) allows unprecedented levels of freedom while losing weight.

I have always been a big fan of Weight Watchers as it has helped so many people lose weight successfully.

Here is what you can now expect from the top ranking weight loss program.

Beyond the Scale and SmartPoints

A huge advance on the previous points system, SmartPoints focuses on more than just weight loss, and emphasizes healthy food. SmartPoints combines all the complex nutritional information into a single number. This number helps members to move towards more lean proteins, fruit and vegetables, less sugar and saturated fat.

Previously all carbohydrates were treated the same in the formula. The focus on sugar is a great improvement.

Of particular note is that all fresh fruits and most vegetables are zero SmartPoints.

Truly Individualized

All members daily and weekly points will now be adjusted according to their individual metabolic rates. The program now begins with a complete personalized assessment capturing your goals as well as your lifestyle information. This will be the most personalized program Weight Watchers have devised to date.

Fitness and Activity is Central

Beyond the Scale has a new approach and attitude toward exercise activity. Each member gets a personalized activity goal. Whether you are keen to get active or not, this is now a core part of the program.

Weight Watchers Connect and Meetings

In-person meetings have had an upgrade, with more focus on goals both on and off the scale. This is part of a significantly more holistic approach than simply focusing on weight and diet.

Connect is a social platform that brings the community closer together for mutual support.

App Overhaul

The Weight Watcher app has been around for some time. Part of Weight Watchers new strategy is to significantly improve the digital offerings.

FitBreak is the new app that will seamlessly integrate with the existing app. It encourages users to take ‘fitbreaks’ throughout the day, and currently includes over 70 options to inspire.

Truly Freestyle

This is a welcome and practical upgrade to the Weight Watchers program. As more people are focusing on healthier and more natural foods, WW has taken the cue and adjusted the points system.

The focus on broader lifestyle goals is also a wise move. There is no such thing as a ‘diet’ in isolation – our lifestyle choices will always influence how we eat and must play a part in any sustainable weight management program.

    I have been a lifetime ww member for 13 years.I lost 48 lbs., met my goals, attended my meetings even after that. I loved the support and staying accountable kept me on track. The reason I succeeded, I think, is BECAUSE I knew I could still eat anything I wanted within my point range. That does not mean I ate sweets all day every day. However, if I wanted to have a doughnut, I could. I didn’t feel deprived of anything. Then I became pregnant and gained my 25 lbs, but after her birth I gained the rest of my weight back ,plus a little more. I was seriously thinking about going back, but honestly, being up front, I don’t know if I can do this new lifestyle eating change. I feel already like I am restricted, before I have even begun. I don’t know what to do. I have tried to read up on clean eating, which is what this is, but clean eating is very expensive…I am very frustrated …just don’t know how to get myself back. I hate to invest in WW again and not see a change because that alone can make me feel discouraged. Flex points worked for…I don’t know about this new stuff

      Hi Vicky, If you’re now finding WW too restrictive you should check out Flexible Dieting. It’s similar to the older version in that you can eat whatever you want as long as it fits your prescribed macros. Learn more at

    I am on my 3rd week. I usually choose lower carb options. Eggs, low carb tortillas, meat, poultry, fish, yogurt, cheese, vegetables and 1 piece of fruit. I find it hard to eat the 38 smart points that I am allowed everyday. Is it okay to eat less or will my weight loss halt?

      You really want to eat what you are allowed otherwise you could stall your weight loss by eating too few calories.

      I think eating close to the full point allotment makes the program more sustainable in the long run. It is less frustrating and feels less restrictive that way. As long as you can lose weight while doing so that is. I sometimes find it difficult all my daily points too, but try to do it anyway. It’s worked well for me over 5 months.

    I am a lifetime member and have been for several years. The new 360 plan is a healthier plan. It places higher points on “bad food”, sugar and saturated fats. Too much sugar and saturated pose serious health risks.
    in my opinion you cannot continue to eat unhealthy treats and expect to loose weight. Everyone needs to start eating healthier to live a longer in good health
    Unfortunately people don’t like change. Weight Watchers is looking out for our health as well as weight loose. The choice is, do I want to be a thinner healthier version of myself, or a thinner persons with health problems . Stop fighting the program, make the small changes, loose weight and get healthier

    Hate the new program. Was doing very well on Points Plus and had all the stuff (calculators, cookbooks, etc.) they sell to go along with it. With Smart Points, I feel deprived because there are so many points in anything sweet or with flour that you pretty much have to stick to vegetables and lean meat…that gets very boring fast…too much like Atkins. They seem to have thrown out their slogan, “You can eat anything you want!” And I don’t buy the “beyond the scale” emphasis. Yes, Oprah, it IS about losing weight. That’s the bottom line. Not all the touchy-feely stuff about loving yourself no matter what. Fat is not healthy.

      And morningstar…. this is why your butt is big. Imagine, a program that tries to tell overweight people that sugar and empty calories are bad for you! The nerve!

      MMorningstar, you stated that fat is not healthy, but your main complaint is that you cannot consume the sugary, flour-based stuff that makes one fat in the first place. See the issue?

      You still can eat everything you want. Just not as much. And that shouldn’t be an issue, because it doesn’t take much to satisfy a craving. So use all of those extra points you are no longer spending on lean meats (as SP point values for them are lower) and use them to have a smaller portion of the sweets you crave. Balance is key. If your response is going to be that you want a bigger portion of the sweets- have it, but realize that choice leads to a bigger portion-sized you.

      I totally understand what you are saying and I am 100% with you!
      Lost 50 lbs on points plus and now the beyond the scale isn’t working and i can’t find support to go back to those points!
      WW should offer options!

    I used WW to lose around 90 lbs back when the Points system was fairly new. I always did like the fact that when you increase your activity, you do get more calories to eat. But I love that you can get that little device to accurately measure how many extra Points you get–I used to run 3 miles a day and gave myself an extra 2-3 pts and my mom would go for a 20 minute leisurely walk and give herself 3-4 points…that little device sure would keep you honest.

    I also like that they try to steer you away from hedonistic foods. See, when I did the program, there were people in my group who figured that since everything was OK and nothing was off-limits, it was fine to eat a day’s worth of points in the form of light ice cream sandwiches. By focusing on getting people to eat more nutritious foods, I think it will help people make it a lifestyle.

      I was always disappointed and annoyed when leaders would push the processed WW junk food each week (I realize it’s part of the job). If they’re encouraging healthier whole food choices, wouldn’t their own products now have higher point values?
