Beware of Organic Junk Food!

By Nicole German (RD, LD)

Organic does not always mean healthy.

Foods can still be loaded with sugar and refined grains, while still being labeled organic.

Don’t fall into the organic junk food trap!

Here I will give you some examples of organic packaged foods that are still junk food.

Top 10 Organic Junk Foods

organic cookie dough

Immaculate Baking Company Organic Cookie Dough

Don’t get me wrong—I love this company because they are one of the only trans fat free cookie dough and baking dough companies out there. However, at the end of the day, it is still cookie dough. Healthier than store Tollhouse cookie dough, but it is still a dessert.

organic pop tarts

Nature’s Path Organic Toaster Pastries

The ingredients are improved, but it is still a sugary pop tart. 1 pastry is 19 grams of sugar and 210 calories.

organic juice

Organic Juices

Unless you are juicing your own organic fruits and vegetables, then organic juices are not the best idea. You are still consuming a concentrated sugar source without the fiber and added benefits from the whole fruit.

Organic Kettle Potato Chips

Don’t be fooled by this one. Organic chips are nearly identical to regular potato chips. They can still become a high calorie, high fat snack food quickly.

Organic Lollipops and Jelly Beans

This one is pretty funny. They are still full of sugar, but sweetened with cane juice, rice syrup, and other syrups. I will say the positive aspect is that the organic candies do not have artificial dyes or chemicals.

Health Valley Organic Cereal Bars

These are not your typical “junk food”, but don’t be fooled by thinking these would be a healthy breakfast. One bar contains 16 grams of sugar in a small 1.3 oz. bar. The first ingredient is cane juice.

organic ice cream

Organic Breyer’s Ice Cream

Nearly identical to regular Breyer’s ice cream. One serving (1/2 cup) of chocolate organic Breyer’s contains 140 calories, 7 grams fat, and 16 grams sugar.

Blue Sky Organic Soda

The positive is that they use no artificial preservatives, flavors, or colors. But, the sugar content is extremely high still—43 grams for the root beer.

Organic Cheese Puffs

I had to put this one on the list because it is my guilty pleasure! And it happens that the cheese puffs are not that bad because they are puffed with air, so it can be easier to stick to a smaller serving. However, they still contain some refined grains 6 grams of fat and 60mg of sodium per 1 cup serving.

Amy’s Organic Pizza

Even though it is organic, you will still be consuming a lot of cheese and bread. The key with the pizza is to be mindful of your portion size and not overeat because you think it is healthier. This Amy’s Organics plain cheese variety still has 17g fat, 49g carbs, and 720mg sodium per 6.2oz serving.

Do you feel better about eating organic “junk foods”?

What is the point in this blog, organic is a healthier choice and if you’re going to consume junk food than organic junk foods are the better choice. You know just by common since that you’re going to be consuming a lot of sugar and calories when you eat junk food. At least you’re not eating artificial flavorings or colors.. or bioengineered crap! To me, thats the most important.

Organic desserts are just that, DESSERTS. While better and healthier ingredients are used to make them they are still high in calories and fat. Only ignorant people think otherwise. The word ORGANIC does not mean FAT and/or CALORIE FREE. There are three items on this list that I eat are which are the Kettle Brand Chips, Immaculate Cookie Co Chocolate Chip Cookies and the Natures Path Toaster Pastries. When eating these things I still count calories and realize that I am in taking a certain amount of fat and sugar also meaning that I have to cut back on these things because an Immaculate Cookie Co cookie is still a cookie even if the ingredients are less processed.

As much as I love the Organic Baked Cheese Puffs at Trader Joes I keep walking on by…

  4. Jim

    Organic lollipops… seriously.

  5. Spectra

I once worked with a guy who was 350+ lbs and he only ate organic foods. However, he ate organic mac and cheese, organic chips, organic cookies, etc. You get the idea.

    • Ted Kallmyer

Do you think he thought he was being healthy?

      • Spectra

He actually did. He once asked me why he could possibly be so fat since all he ate was organic foods. I asked him what kinds of organic foods and he listed almost all the organic junk food you have pictured up there. I told him that even if something’s organic, it can still be loaded with calories.

Thanks for this post. My husband is a wellness practitioner in nyc and I’m a chef. It’s “healthy” items like this that have a lot of vegetarians and vegans erroneously and righteously thinking that they are on healthful path of eating, but then don’t understand why they are overweight, suffering from fatigue and other health issues. High carb foods like these will still put people at risk for high cholestrol, diabetes and other degenerative diseases. I’m a sucker for healthy cheese puffs myself…my guilty pleasure too!
