I am baffled and also sad at some of the discussions going on.
People, this blog is a diet blog, yes. But the message is Eat Right. Get HEALTHY. Not 'Get Anorexic'. Or 'Get As Thin As Possible'. This is not the site to promote those things.
If you are working out daily, eating healthily (or trying to, anyway, it's hard), and not a lazy slob, then IT'S ALL GOOD.
I weight 117-ish pounds and I'm really short. 5'1. I have friends my size who weigh like, 95 pounds. I have not been that weight since grade seven. But you know what? Our bodies are all different. I'm naturally thicker/bigger boned (thanks, dad)... And it sucked in highschool because I was always 15, 20 pounds bigger than I thought I was supposed to be because I thought if you were 5'1, you had to be 100 pounds, or less.
Now I exercise 4-5 times a week. I avoid "bad" foods but treat myself one day a week (to an extent)... And I'm happy because I'm healthy. I can run for miles, I can spin on the spin bike for an hour and that's all that matters. It's actually very liberating. Being this strong. And knowing what's best for my body.
I'm kind of frustrated at the girls who are clearly trying unhealthy alternatives to lose weight. I understand that it's not as simple as I'm putting it, sometimes there are emotional issues, but pleeease recognise it and get help! Or if you're friends with somebody or if somebody is posting something and you realise it's unhealthy, TELL THEM.
I don't know where I'm going with this, I just feel sad for girls who are insecure about their bodies and don't know what to do. Because I've been friends with some and I've told them the same thing I posted up here and whether or not they took it was up to them. But I'm just sayin'! There are many other things in life to be worried about.

Great post. There are far too many people out there doing dangerous things to their bodies. What's frightening too is that they find allies on here who support them and defend their decisions. You can tell by how defensive they get when questioned about their motives that it isn't the first time they've been confronted by the same concerns expressed here. You'd think they'd realize that what they are doing is not healthy and very dangerous. Sadly, most do not.
ReplyAbsolutely. I just coached someone this morning on the same thing. I said "do not take weight loss pills" after they asked me about phen.
ReplyI agree 100%. I'm 5'0" and 135 pounds... people think I weigh 100 pounds because I'm pure muscle. The number on the scale isn't everything!
ReplySeriously, great post. Yesterday's post with someone who was 5'4" and 101 lbs and wanted to lose 7 more scared me. I couldn't tell if the person was being facetious.
ReplyAt 5'4" healthy BMI of 18.5-24.9 means a healthy weight range of 108-145. Now I know BMI doesn't tell the whole story and it's very possible to have a lot of lean muscle and a higher BMI and be very healthy.
But I'm not sure you can healthily scale much lower than the low point and keep trying to lose weight.
It especially shocked me because I am 5'4" as well and 144lbs, trying to get to 130lbs. The thought of weighing 94lbs makes me feel like passing out.
Thank you so much for this post!
The aim here on Diet Blog is to promote positive body image, and good diet practice in order to get healthy. Disordered eating and obsessive behavior is prevalent and it is not something I would want to promote or advocate. However many people begin with regular diets and then fall into these patterns.
Look after yourself and remember that YOU are not YOUR BODY.
ReplyI personally don't think super skinny = beautiful in anyway. A women with curves and some meat means they are healthy. I also blame the media for putting those images out there. A lot kids are looking at magazines like the Seventeen which i rather them looking at fitness magazines. Diet pills are so unnatural and deteriorates the body. Once you stop taking those pills you are fat again so what is the point? If you want that ideal body you need to stay active and maintain a healthy diet. A lot of my friends tried the RESET KIT from USANA and got great results. Very healthy and nutritional even athletics take them. Do it for 5 days and exercise..guarantee a increase of energy as well.

Replywhat is the reset kit?
ReplyGreat post! I definitely agree with you. Everyone's body is different, but it shouldn't be about a number on the scale; it should be about health and overall wellness. Most people don't think I weigh 105-107 because I'm solid muscle and I have actual thighs instead of toothpicks.
ReplyBody fat %, VO2 Max, flexibility and endurance are the ways to measure true fitness. Let's get in the 21st century already.
ReplyThrow in 1 RM for weight lifting as well to fitness criteria.
ReplyI'm 5'6" and I weigh 120 lbs. I can be very self-conscious about my weight sometimes (because of the pressure put on me by my family), but I'm slowly learning to just appreciate that they care and ignore them when it comes to this. Sadly, I'm very unfit. To those who exercise, I give you props!
ReplyI CAN understand the mindset where you're so focused on getting skinnier and skinnier that other things are just not important...but it's terribly sad. You're missing out on the rest of life. Find a new hobby! Have fun with your fitness, try to eat healthily (as this post says - it's hard!) and look for new practical ways to make it easier for yourself, but not new ways to just get skinnier and fade away to a shadow.
ReplyI don't believe in suffering to lose weight. The best thing to do is adopt a healthy lifestyle, eat well and be active. I think it would be much better to read a book like "Looking Good Naked" in order to learn how to be comfortable with your body, rather than starve yourself to be skinny.
ReplySome great thoughts here. I agree that the point of dieting/exercising is to be healthy, strong and having the energy to do all the stuff you want to do. Ultimately, surely that's what matters -- not being a stick figure!
ReplyGreat post. Its a genuine concern and we can see it through your writing. The main point here is for people to realize that we need to love ourselves. Its about self-acceptance, knowing who you are and loving yourself for it is far from selfishness. Appreciate the life you have and your body. Your body is an art that you have full control on. You are the artist, so sculpt it the way you want it. And do it the healthy way. Eating healthy, doing moderate exercises is very easy, if you tell yourself it is. It's all in the mind, control your mind, control your life.
ReplyWhat a great post! I encourage people to eat...lots and lots. Preferably lots of sweets...Chocolate is decadent. We were put on this earth to eat. All girls/women should weigh at least 150 lbs. In the Renaissance it was a sign of wealth. So, it should be now. Eating and being heavy is what's truly beautiful. Women should never be thin. Why would anyone want to look like Skeletor? I must give praise to the woman who wants to be the world's heaviest. She may get the Noble Peace Prize. Wouldn't that be an amazing accomplishment? Why would anyone want to waster their time sweating and eating boring food, when you can just indulge and enjoy life, right? I mean what's thi big hype about all this fitness stuff. We are all going to eventually die anyway, so why bother? Just enjoy life and indulge as much as possible.
