55 Years of Dieting and Still Overweight

At age 73 I am STILL on a diet?? My first one at age 18 led to this. What can I say? I've been on every diet known to mankind, have lost and gained, lost and regained. I'm now (according to the charts) about 60 lbs. higher than the norm (whatever that is).

Any other oldsters reading this?

    Sad. Any advice for a woman like me? I.E. if you knew then what you know now...

  • I'm not older, but I used to be serial dieter.

    Have you ever tryed to just eat a nutritionally sound diet? Nothing crazy just good lean proteins, whole grains, dairy, nuts and legumes in the proper portions and loads of vegetables?

    Michael Pollan (author of Omnivores Dilemma) wrote in In Defense of Food, "Eat Food, not too much, mostly vegetables". It's simple but I find myself thinking that every time I sit down to eat. When I made vegetables the focus of my meals the rest just fell into place.

    • Yes it is better to be overweight than under weight when you get older, but 60lbs overweight? She should try to lose that if possible, but not by doing all those fad diets out there. Good sound nutrition would do wonders.

    I, too, am 72 and, have been dieting since I was a teenager . I suspect that it is much harder to lose , when older, because the body is much too used to it. I think that it has to be jump started and, I've started fasting on Mondays and Fridays with the weight starting to come off.I drink plenty of water, and tea. The other days , I eat nutritiously ( without binging )This is working for me

    • Great advocate fasting in the later years? When it's harder to hold onto muscle mass? Great advice there buddy!

      No seriously you need to focus on preservation and possibly the building of muscle mass. That's the number 1 reason older people have slower metabolism. Fasting actually causes LOSS of muscle mass! Eat good protein whole grain dairy fruits and vegetables and lift weights! It's never too late! Just start out light. Not only does weight lifting help preserve muscle mass it also sterngthens bones and prevents osteoporosis.

        Except that it makes no evolutionary sense for short-term fasting to lead to muscle loss. Evolving humans had no constant access to food thanks to a refrigerator, pantry, and supermarket, so if not eating for a couple of days meant inevitable muscle loss, I don't see how the human species survived.

        • I make perfect sense since man back before the advent of agriculture life span was 30y/o.

          I'm not saying you should never fast, just not for not for extended periods of time. Most doctors don't recommend fasting any longer than 36 hours.

          Arguing fasting does not cause muscle loss is stupid. There have been many studies on the matter. Without proper precautions long periods of fasting will cause muscle loss. The only way to prevent muscle loss when even just restricting calories is to exercise the muscle through cardio exercise and strength training.

          Basically the average human only needed to survive long enough to procreate. When you are younger it's much harder to lose muscle mass. You can thank modern science, medicine and agriculture for the average life span tripling from that of our ancestors.

    SWO, I'm not sure if I qualify as an "oldie" in you book, lol (I'm 57), but here's how I finally changed things around. I'd tried just about everything to lose weight only to keep packing on more and more pounds, and what finally worked for me is sensible eating; that's moderate amounts of lean proteins, lots of veggies, some fruit and a little monounsaturated fat (nuts, olive oil). I lost 100 pounds eating this way and it turned out that what I was doing was the Zone diet, even though I hadn't realized it at first. It quickly became a way of life at our house because it was so easy and satisfying, plus I felt great. I stuck with the Zone and I've maintained the weight loss for almost 15 years now. My whole family has been very successful eating 'in the Zone', even my 79 year old mom, who has been obese for most of her adult life, has lost weight and kept it off.

  • I'm 43 and have lost / gained for whole my life due to diet periods.... and eating periods. It has gone now so far that I'm far heavier now than where I started. I think I have to accept the way I am...

    Edward, I has a similar history to yours and thought thought the same thing when I was 42. That same year I started the Zone and it's changed my whole life.

  • You should eat more fruits and vegetables, drink lot of water, be physically active and avoid unhealthy foods like junk food and sodas. Also do not go for crash dieting or starvation diets where you take very little food.

    Also avoid liquid dieting where you just take liquid diets throughout the day. These are all low calorie diets and not a good idea.

    By being physically active, avoiding unhealthy diet plans as well as unhealthy foods, you can regain your fitness. You can lose weight gradually by following the above advice. So do not be discouraged and stop going on diets now.

  • I decided to tell you about my long struggle with overweight.
    But they were heavy, believe me!

    Today many yang women due to stress or any other cause difficulty controlling their weight.
    I passed this way and want to share what I've tried, what medications, etc. I filed.

    I was 22 years old when it turned away 65 kilograms. I not understand how suddenly I come to 98 kilograms!!! As a result of stress, unrequited love, problems in the workplace, there is the biggest factors in this tragedy.
    Started all possible and impossible drastic diets and adopt all sorts of medicines, herbal preparations, food supplements, fasting - RESULT-ZERO!!!
    I feel more and more fat - increasing - unhappy. Began to employ and alcohol, which invariably leads to fluid retention and progressive thickening again.
    For example, I will give some of the preparations that I have taken:
    Reductil, Xenical, Homeopathic / Recewek /, L-carnitine powder and so on and so on. No result!!
    And so for years. I lived then with one boy, He just kept repeating that everything will be fine and everything is perfect. On top of it and got pregnant and I was stand 115 kilograms !!!!!! I stopped the diet.
    I split with my boyfriend who is father after the birth of my child.
    I stayed alone, I feel terribly abandoned, miserable, ugly and even more fat. I started diet again, but even after a year while I was unable to return before kolograms / 98 kilograms /.
    I was in motherhood stood all day with my child and wondering what to lute time. I began to learn of pure curiosity I do horoscopes. So I discovered that astrology attracts me.
    Searching for information, I came across a forum where astrology was introduced to a very nice man who is a professional astrologer. After many calls to Skype, he began to push to see me. Long time I not to accept his proposal / I am ashamed of my external appearance /. Despite my denials, he had not ceased to insist. I had no choice, I had to agree.

    He loved me and I loved him. Everything was perfect, so after 3 months away cohabitation I was lost 12 kilograms without even understand!!!
    This is a miracle of love and faith in himself . After another 6 months already worked together with my husband and we prepare together
    horoskopes. My childe grow up happy, I was pretty weakened and was 24 kilograms more!!!!! Without any drastic diets and medications. Now 3 years
    We are happily married, we continue to occupy on astrology.
    I managed to fight the weight after removing the stress, negativity and despair!!! All power is in our love, believe in ourselves and know that it will everything is going to better.
    Love and faith in ourselves are the source of your ideal life and looks beautiful and happy of life!!!
