How Many Calories Do I Need?

Vote 1 Vote

Hi,

I want to lose at least 25 pounds in about two months. I need help figuring out how I can accomplish that, and how to keep my weight off. For example, how many calories to take in, or how much I should workout each day?

Any kind of advice would be appreciated.

Thank You! =]

Google "calorie calculator", pick one that comes up or pick several as they all have slight differences, fill in the blanks and it will tell you how many calories you need to be a certain weight. If you want to be 25lbs lighter, punch in the weight you desire, fill in the rest and calculate. It'll tell you how many calories to eat daily to be at that weight. Easy.

  • That is truly one of the saddest posts I've ever seen. If you want to lose 25 pounds in 2 months, unless you're 6'5", you're probably going to have to starve yourself.

Go ahead, kill yourself doing it over two months and watch how fast it will come back...+ another 25.

The only way to lose weight and keep it off is to do it slowly and make life-long changes to your eating habits. Starvation is not an option.

    Hey Onew,

Like NewMe says, that sounds like you're trying to lose weight too fast. A safe rate of weight loss is no more than 2 pounds per week, which is about 16 pounds in 2 months.

Also, the slower you lose weight, the more likely you are to keep it off!

You should be eating at least 1,100 calories per day (probably more, unless you're a short woman like me!)

If you let us know your weight, gender, age height, perhaps we could help out a little more?

    • Complete and utter hogwash. Ali, it would be nice if you would once in a while, you know, just for kicks, support your outlandish assertions with.. oh, I don't know.. science?

  • While I think it is possible to lose 25 pounds of fat without killing yourself, I doubt the poster has the fortitude and definitely lacks the knowledge to do so. If you're serious about trying to shed pounds in a healthy way as fast as possible, interview some personal trainers in your area who can prove to you they've helped their clients do similar things as well as gave them strategies to maintain their new physiques. That said, I would agree with NewMe and Ali Hale - go the slower route. It's too easy to get drawn into various gimmick diets like the grapefruit diet that make you think you're making yourself healthier but may actually do more harm than good in the long term. Take it upon yourself to do some research on your own. Unfortunately, while some of the posters here have sound ideas, not all of them do.

I agree with NewMe and Ali Hale. Go for the slow weight loss. Losing weight the slow way leads to a new way of eating which becomes a way of life. You'll stay healthy and increase your longevity.
Do your due diligence and check out all the different programs. Then chose the one you want. Don't think that calorie counting is the only way to go.
I like the easy plans: easy to figure out, easy to use anywhere anytime, easy to do and allows you to eat and not feel deprived.
    Good luck!

  • I can tell you how. Google "Rapid Fat Loss Handbook" or go to BodyRecomposition(dot)com.

Lyle McDonald is one of the most respected fat loss experts in the world.

This kind of rapid fat loss can be done safely and effectively. Spend your $40 and buy his book and do it the right way.

Also, please don't listen to all of the bad, and I mean BAD advice here on Diet Blog. The only reason I post here is to dispel the myths and misinformation given out on a daily basis.

  • Barry, I checked that out and it's nothing more than the usual high-protein ketogenic diet. It's Atkins all over again. What's so revolutionary about it?

I agree with you that there's limited evidence for the oft-touted notion that "slow weight loss is best," but there's certainly mounds of evidence that an extreme high-protein low-carb (such as the one McDonald proposes) can be very dangerous.

    • Yep, you have no idea what you're talking about. Standard Diet Blog user. Rapid Fat Loss Handbook is ketogenic but the weight loss isn't premised on the idea that ketosis causes fat loss or produces a metabolic advantage. It just happens to be ketogenic because of the very low calories.

Note that nobody said anything about it being "revolutionary".

Please go get educated before you say things that are completely and totally wrong.

Gee, Barry, I don't have any idea where you get your mounds of evidence, but Ali is right on the money. The scientific evidence is from the doctors who practice in America, who have licenses, who belong to the American Medical Association and who share their peer-reviewed research in journals like the Journal of the American Medical Association, Lancet, and Obesity with other licensed and registered professionals who practice legally in this country, like myself--a registered dietitian.
Where are you getting your misinformation that is encouraging people to run health risks so YOU can make money??

  • well, I can tell you the only way that it ever worked for me before was just basic math. Find out how many calories you should take in each day to stay at the weight you are at. With that said, 3500 cal. = 1 lb of fat, so either eat that many less or work out to burn them or both, but if you get rid of 7,000 a week, that is 2 lbs. You will have to keep up with every cal. you take in and burn, but if you watch what you eat and get to working it off, you can burn both ends. I promise you it will blow your mind and work. But if you cheat, you cheat yourself. 25 in 60 days would mean you would have to eliminate 87,500 cal. from you diet/excersie over 60 days, and if you are around the 2500 cal. mark to remain the same, that means you have to cut your calories from 150,000, to just 62,500 which leaves you only taking in 1,041 a day. So can be done, but really going to be tough. Try eating around 1,500 a day and excercise the other 450 away a day. Good Luck
