Has Anyone Read This Book: The Metabolism Miracle?

A new book published in April 09 by Diane Kress, a registered dietitian and weight-loss specialist, caught my interest this morning, and I couldn't find any reviews about it on this blog.

It's called "The Metabolism Miracle: 3 Easy Steps to Regain Control of Your Weight... Permanently." It discusses how many people who have trouble losing weight may have a condition called Metabolism B, which apparently causes your body to overprocess carbs into excess body fat.

Through a method which she has designed, as well as recipes and advice, she claims she can help those with Metabolism B lose weight.

I just wondered if anyone out there has read this, and has any thoughts or reviews on whether it worked for them or even helped at all? Thanks!

Metabolism B is something Kress made up. She's flogging a new diet book, just another addition to the confusion dieters suffer from. Do a search on "Metabolism B" and you'll have your answer.

The process of converting carbohydrates into fat is called de novo lipogenesis. It's exceedingly rare, and requires a carbohydrate intake in excess of the individual's total daily energy expenditure. Almost nobody eats that much carbohydrate. Sorry.

Of course, offering up yet another excuse as to why people are fat is a sure fire way to make money. People will buy because most of them will do anything to avoid cutting calories and exercising.

So how many grams of carbs would it take to cause this condition?

Actually the book is not an excuse. She wants you to excercise and debunks the myth that you can lose weight without working out. Maybe you should read the book before you try to give your expert opinion. It is a very sensible and healthy eating plan.

I have read the book and I am on day 5 of trying this out. I have lost a lot of weight in the past after the birth of my son, however I have steadily gained weight back even though I have been sticking to the program that I had lost the weight on. The book makes sense. I have had more energy and have not been tempted to binge on carbs in the evening. If nothing else... I am making better choices to fill me up. I will check back to let everyone know how I make out. PS... My pants are slightly looser only day 5

        Hi Penny,

I wonder if you might possibly share some info with me to get me started. I don't have the money to buy this book yet and I desperately want to ease some of my symptoms. Just trying a few of the tricks I read online I have lost a few pounds, but I want to get started on the 8 weeks and start to feel better and really start losing. Please email me: heatherannechaney@yahoo.com

I started on this metabolism miracle food plan on May 28th. As of today, July 10th I am still on it. I have lost 14 lbs and I have never felt better. For me it wasn't just about the weight loss. I had all the other symptoms the book mentions. I was tired, having trouble sleeping, ect. I feel great. I have more weight to lose..I feel confident that I will lose it and continue to eat like this forever. I am not hungry and I don't miss the sugar. I liked this book because Diane is a nutritionist who learned the hard way that just cutting calories and watching fats, ect. just doesn't work for everyone. A lot of health care professionals will look at you as if you are a liar when you tell them "I have followed the diet 100%, and I am not losing weight." Not everyone loses weight the same, no matter what we are told.

Metabolism B does exist and it lumps people into its' category that have conditions like pre-diabetes, PCOS, Metabolic Syndrome etc. Are you folks stating that those aren't real conditions either? Maybe you should read the book instead of just throwing out your opinions. I have been following the plan for 7 days and have already lost 6 lbs. Clearly this is not another fad diet, since she has used it for over 3,000 patients. Until you know what you are talking about, I wouldn't comment!!!

      Hi!
Did you say the book actually mentions PCOS?
I have suffered from that condition and it does make weight loss very difficult, amongst other things.
Does it give you an eating plan or advice for each condition?
That sounds interesting. Thanks for posting.

Another term for Metabolism B is Metobolic Syndrome and yes this is a real condition. I suffer from Metabolic Syndrome and PCOS. Due to these conditions, I have Hypertension, High Cholesterol, and suffer from depression. I am 34 y/o. I work out @ least three times a week @ CURVES. Aside from working out, I work full time, and attend college. Not to mention keeping up with my 14 y/o. For the most part, I am a healthy eater I never keep still, however I continue to be overweight. When I heard about Diane Kress's discovery, I felt as if a burden had been lifted off of me. Someone finally has an answer. I intend to purchase this book and try it out.

I am just finishing up my second day of the Miracle plan. So far so good, I do have the headache, grumpiness, hunger pains and weakness that the book said I would for at least three days. I'm so excited over this that I don't even mind! Finally, something that I have every faith will work for me. Over the last eight months I have been counting every calorie, walking mile after mile, working out like a crazed fool and have only lost 38 lbs. The last three months have been a struggle just to maintain that loss! I get the book, low and behold, it appears to have been written specifically for me! I was looking for a support group of like dieters when I came across this site. Does anyone know if one exists yet?

I have been on this plan for nearly 2 weeks now. The information made great sense to me and I was relieved to know many others had the same problems and food cravings I had. I have to admit that when it said to persevere throughout the first three days that when you wake up on the fourth day, all will be well, I was skeptical. However, on the fourth day, I woke up and the cravings had gone. I had more energy and was staying asleep all night. Amazing! .. yes, a miracle.
The best thing that happened was not the few inches I have already dropped or the nearly 10 pounds. The pounds are mostly fluid that I was carrying to metabolize the carbs, no doubt. But, not having the extra fluid makes me feel hugely better. Back to the best thing ... my blood sugar. I had taken to using Avandia and Zocor and Starlix (yes, I am in touch with my Dr). This bothered me greatly because I know that once taking meds regularly, it is a slippery slope. I stopped taking them and about 36 hours after starting the plan, my blood sugar was closer to normal than it had been in a very long time. This plan has you eating. It does not have you starving. I knew from when I was pregnant that a bedtime protein snack helped me feel better in the night and morning. I didn't know then why that was. Now, I know, it was my blood sugar cycling. I used to think my hormones were making me wake in a sweat.. not so! It was my blood sugar! My Dr enlightened me and I was on a whole new quest! Not too long ago, my blood sugar ranged 140 to 276 at any given time. I did not know the extent of my swings and how 'well' my liver was responding to my eating .. esp in regards to timing. New thought to me... skip a meal and gain weight. WOW! Liver working but against me. My A1C was good but I had some high readings that proved my sugar was dropping somewhere. Not good, the swings are hard on your body and it was happening to me all the time.
All I can say is that I am in this for the long haul. I love how it makes me feel. My blood sugar was 107 at bedtime last night and 111 this morning. Not perfect but I will take it any day of the week! I can eat.. I NEED to eat. I know what kinds of foods to eat. I am armed and going forward! I am happy. I am encouraged. I know every day will not be easy because I love the foods that got me this way. At this point, I feel that if I lose weight, it is gravy. I have found enough reason without weight loss to love this. It is not Adkins with high fat and no carbs. There are plenty of free foods. No, you cannot have fries, but once the three days are over... you really do not crave! It is such a freedom!
One thing that sticks in my mind and I have shared with many people is the author's remark about fat intake. She says something to the effect of what fat do you want your body to burn? .. yours or that of the food you are putting into your body? Nice. That will make me choose low fat everything!

I started this diet last week and was a bit skeptical as to whether it would work or if I could even do it; I love pastas and couldn't image not having them. After one week I am down 5.5 lbs and I feel better than I have in a long time.
I started this at 221 lbs and I am 5'4", 33 years old, have PCOS, and I fully believe that this is going to be the one thing that finally works.
The book is 100% correct that the cravings do go away and you do have more energy. I am actually looking forward to the next 7 weeks of this rather than dreading it like I have in the past with other diets that didn't work.

I am just starting the first Step (8 weeks of very limited carbs--no more than 5 NET carbs every 5 hours). The author is correct that one has to read the actual label, not just the advertising on the front, to calculate Net Carbs (total grams carbs minus ONLY fiber grams), and limit to not more than 5 grams every 5 hrs. I don't have any identified illness, but know that with more weight than "ideal" (and despite an intense workout schedule--spinning at 25 mph at 110+ watts, for 90 minutes 2x/week, and weights for 45 min/3x week--) I am a possible candidate for Type 2 Diabetes...something I definitely want to avoid. Also, I know that I am a carbo addict. I would also recommend that you read "The End of Overeating" by David Kessler, former U.S. Surgeon General...he describes, in grotesque detail, how the food industry is "high-jacking" our palates, getting our brains programmed to eat more fat, more sugar and more salt. Kress' program will take us off all that: I've now prohibited any food which comes in a bag or a box...the end of processed food! The only thing I'm going to miss, at the end of this summer, are fruits...but there is always next year!!!

Nay-sayers, try it before you condemn it. I am about to end week 5 of the 8-week step 1 of the program. I feel fantastic, have lost about 15 pounds (I do weigh weekly)and do NOT dread the rest of this program. On previous diets I would wake up in the morning dreading the day because of all of the sacrificing, hunger, etc. Now it's not about what I CAN'T eat, but what I CAN eat, and how much better I feel. I am exercising when I can, about 3x per week for an hour. I am eagerly looking forward to step 2 in 3 more weeks when I can add back some fruit and whole wheat bread. The cravings are gone. Now, I would LOVE to sit down and eat a pint of ice cream, but it doesn't consume my life the way it used to. I used to feel deprived and depressed when I'd diet because of what I was missing. Now I just look forward to fitting back into the clothes that are in my closet and am delighted when I put on a pair of pants that used to be tight that are now loose.

Whether or not Metabolism B is an "invented" disorder doesn't matter. What matters is realizing what those carbs were doing to my system and getting rid of them and heading toward a more healthy life.

My husband and I started this diet a week ago. The author is a dietician and describes her spiral into diabetes Type 2. I could thoroughly relate to her experience and the symptoms she describes. They are the same ones I have experienced as I, too, developed diabetes Type 2.

My husband seems to have "Metabolism B" as well but there is no genetic predisposition for diabetes Type 2, thank God.

I have tried many changes in diet in order to get my diabetes in check. Most of the time it's been OK, but lately it's become difficult. My doctor put me on insulin which I had refused before.

Since starting this diet, I am off of one med (a diuretic) and my A1C panel dropped from 8.5 to 6.9. I feel that I'm on my way. My blood glucose reading this morning was 103. I've decreased my insulin intake by half due to lower readings.

I feel great. My energy is up.

I ride my bike at least 5 times a week for 30 minutes. Exercise is absolutely necessary.

As far as weight loss is concerned, she asks that we don't weight ourselves for 8 weeks. However, I had a doctor's appointment yesterday and discovered that I am down 6 lbs. I am 5'6" and currently weigh 206. I was 212 at the beginning of this diet.

I should add that she points to several factors that cause the onset of diabetes and the inability to get it under control. I was always in excellent health and my weight was anywhere from slightly thin to normal until I hit my late 30s. The weight began piling on and the usual weight-loss methods no longer worked. Add to that, a return to school for a master's degree, a move to a new city, a divorce, a re-marriage and later, Katrina, stress has been a huge factor in my diabetes. My father died of a heart attack at 62. Although it was never diagnosed, my guess is he had uncontrolled diabetes.

I will not go the way of my father who was also a fine physical specimen until his late 30s.

It has been very interesting reading everyone's comments. The unfortunate thing with blogs and forums, is that ofter times lots of opinions paired with inaccurate information gets posted. If you don't like the book or don't agree that it is something that would work for you, then that is fine, caution that the book is very specific. I have read the book and I started the new way of eating on 9/14/09. I do not suffer from any of the medical conditions the book mentions...but I should say do not suffer from them yet, but some of my relatives do. My weight classifies my as obese, I have hit a block and can't seem to lose weight and change how I eat, which I have to do, or I will develop some of the medical conditions that are listed. I am 28 years old and have to make these changes now! Yes Step One is a strict 8 weeks, but read the whole book. By Step Three, you have the control, the weight loss, and the knowledge to eat a balanced diet of all the food groups necessary for excellent nutrition. I need the strictness of Step One, not to get myself off medications, but the teach myself control and how to say no to bad choices. I can't just say no to a bowl of mac and cheese, but I can't have that now, I won't have that. But by Step Three I can and will choose to have a balanced portion of whole wheat pasta with fresh tomatoes instead. Will a part of me always want the mac and cheese, um... of course. Will I be able to find a healthier take of the recipe, why not. But the new 60 pounds less person in me won't let that happen, and will have more control and better decision making with food.
Everyone's metabolism is different. Read this book, learn how to eat in a new way that will work with your body instead of against it. Yes this is a diet, but hello a diet is described as a persons eating habits. Just change your diet forever! Best of luck in reaching your goals and lets use this blog as a means of support for that!

    :) A :)

Hi Kathy- Step one is a lot of veggies, just certain ones...peppers, cucumbers, broccoli, cauliflower, eggpant and a bunch of others. The ones you can't have are my favorites, corn, peas, carrots...There is no fruit in step one. The protein is pretty open, but needs to be lean. Cheese needs to be low fat.

I am not hungry, food is not consuming my mind, and I can live on the menu plans that have been set out. This is not difficult and hopefully I will get the results I am wanting. I am feeling lighter, not so bloated, not feeling like a zombie after a meal, and mid afternoon. Blood sugar readings are lower by a pt. or two, , so I believe I am headed in the right direction. FYI - last Saturday (9/19) I went to my local Daltons Book Store to get the book. They were out but offered to order it for me. I said OK figuring this would take at least 7-10 working days. When the clerk pulled it up in the computer it was only $16.95 instead of $25. There was no shipping charge and it arrived Wed (23rd), only four days. I've been reading it thoroughly and will start Monday the 28th. I am concerned about only 5 carbs at a time. It scares me. Looking forward to getting past the first three days. Grumpy? Headaches?

This is a GREAT plan!! I read the book in August and started the diet August 15th. I was definitely an apple shape, have always been, and nothing has ever worked like this diet! I've lost 24 lbs, have about 12 more to go and I'll be at 140. I'm 5'9" so my doctor said that would be perfect. She also gave the thumbs up for me to go on this diet. (She's my next door neighbor so we walk together and she's very proud of me and recommending this book to her 'apple' patients!!

I totally recommend it to anyone who counting calories hasn't worked. The first 3 days were tough but I went exactly by the book and kept myself busy and got thru it with no problem. The greatest thing about it is you learn to eat the right foods for this problem, plus she wants you to start an exercise program, which is good for all of us. I have always walked but have never had the overall strength OR the overall good mood I'm in these days.

Stick with it, get excited about it, tell yourself you can do it this time and I promise you it will work!!

jeanne, I just saw your post.. yes, try the 'sweet' recipes! The brownies are great!! Once you lose the cravings for sugary things, and that will come, I promise you, but you'll find the least sweet thing made w/splenda is way sweet enough. Regular peanut butter is sugary sweet to me now. I've gotten so used to natural PB, it's great to me now.

Plussss, the main thing about this diet, besides feeling so much lighter and having more energy, you feel so good about yourself for sticking with it! Just stay 'bought up' on everything you'll need for days to come. You can do this; it's not hard once you get over the first few days.

Hi Julie- Thanks for the comments. I do not miss the tiredness and bloated feeling of two weeks ago. I think the fact I feel so much better means this is the type of plan I need. On other plans I did not experience the energy change- so the diet changes just seemed arduous. Feeling so much better mentally and physically makes it easier. I just need to find some other snacks to have- but overall I am in love with this plan.

jeanne, I love sugar free gelatin with a few walnuts. I order organic walnuts from wilderness family naturals, no connection to them (wish I was:-) but they're the best out there, IMO. They also have great olive oil and everything's organic.

When I don't have any low carb bread, I take a whole wheat pita and quarter it, then halves the quarters. It doesn't sound like much but when it's toasted it's very good with peanut butter or with mayo and mustard and piled high with lean turkey/chicken/ham.

Also, stir your natural peanut butter, put a little in a tiny bowl and microwave, then stir in about 1/3 pack splenda and fill celery sticks with it.. really satisfying. The vanilla protein shakes will keep your sweet tooth in check, too. Sweet potato fries are fabulous with cinnamon & splenda.

Make the brownie muffins one evening, freeze most of them and you'll have something sweet to grab. I haven't tried the cinnamon muffins yet but they look great with the sour cream!! I've loved all of the ricotta pudding flavors, chocolate, lemon and cinnamon; they're all delicious!

Just plan on making a few recipes, buy all the ingredients and munch on a few nuts while you're baking; it's fun, plus you'll be so proud for sticking to it!!

jeanne, I like stevia (truvia) now even better than splenda, but I'll have to look to see if you can cook with it. I'm like you, never one for equal, sweet & low, etc. but my doctor said splenda is safe, just don't overdo it in a day and always drink 64 oz of filtered water everyday, along with your coffee, tea, etc.

I made the Italian Vegetable Soup this morning and it is fantastic!!!

alice, Kroger has yogurt with 3 grams of carbs..I have it for lunch with ham and cheese roll-ups, celery sticks with peanut butter and I'm totally satisfied. Good luck; just remember if you stick it out for the first 3 days the hardest part is over.. your energy and good mood will shock you!!

Last night we had a steak on the grill, big salad and mashed cauliflower. My husband, a big meat and potatoes man, said the 'potatoes' were really good. I waited until he was through before I told him he was eating cauliflower:) He also thought the broccoli cheese casserole was great and he hates mushrooms, or so he thought.

It's really just taking the time to season everything and go right by her recipes. It takes time to assemble the ingredients but you get used to it, and believe me, it's well worth it when those skinny jeans will fit with room to spare!!!

Stock up on protein shakes so when you need something sweet and don't feel like cooking or don't have the time, grab a cold shake and it'll really take your mind off sugar.

Hi again. Last time I wrote, I was only a week into the diet. Now I'm 5 weeks in and wanted to share some of the results.

I know it says not to weigh yourself but I did. I've lost 11 pounds. I'm diabetic (Type 2) and had blood sugar readings all over the place. They have been stable in the 80 to 110 range. I was taking 40mg of insulin daily and am now down to 20. My doctor has taken me off of one medication and has halved another. My guess is that my A1C panel is going to mirror my progress.

As far as carb cravings go, they're gone. My energy is fantastic and my mood is good.

My main criticism would be variety. I tend to get stuck repeating the recipes I've already made. I'm getting tired of a handful of nuts, olives and low-fat cheese as a snack. Does anyone have any other ideas?

Advice? Beware of all the fat in this diet even if it is low-fat. And, by all means - excercise. My bike and I have a new appreciation for each other.

nolality, those are great results; congrats bigtime!!!

For snacks I've tried everything on her list with the exception of zucchini muffins.. My favorites are low carb shakes & protein shakes.. get them really cold and they are so satisfying.

I love sugar free popsicles, meringue cookies..love the parmesan chips and crispy tortilla chips with salsa..

Sugar free gelatin with 2 or 3 big walnut halves is a regular for me; keep a jar of celery sticks in your fridge to put natural peanut butter on, delish!!!

Low carb/sugar yogurts and hot chocolates are very good, too. I also keep a container of bell pepper strips in the fridge which are great with light ranch dressing and a few parmesan or tortilla chips..

You do have to watch the fat.. I love olive oil and had to really cut back roasting veggies because I was used to sprinkling lots of EVOO, kosher salt and freshly ground pepper on them and popping in the oven at 450 for about 20 mins.. I still do it but instead of sprinkling the whole pan with olive oil, I put the veggies in a bowl, measure out 1 tablespoon of olive oil and toss and toss until all of them have a little bit on them.

I'm keeping a food diary of everything I eat and try to keep it low fat that way.. Each night I list what I'm gonna eat the next day, another list for what to buy immediately and days to come.

If you stay organized and do exactly what she says, it'll really make a difference in your life!

I have really appreciated reading your posts. I have started on the first phase of the Metabolism miracle diet with good results so far.On reading your post you said that you kept a dairy of all you eat so as to watch fat intake etc. You may want to check out www.sparkpeople.com it is a great free site that enables you to track all the foods you eat plus exercise and gives you daily breakdowns of all the foods you input into calories carbs proteins fats fibres vitamins minerals etc. Just thought you may find that helpful

Just a quick update for anyone wanting to know what results you can get from this diet. I was supposed to start step two this week but because of a little mistep I am adding ten days. However, I weighed myself again and found that in 8 weeks on this I had lost 19lbs. I have not been under 200 lbs in over 4 years and I am now only a couple of pounds of getting under it again.
I can't believe how great I feel and how easy this has been. I truly hope that all of you succeed with this as well as I am. This eating plan is a life saver and a life changer.

but I was feeling lighter, and to my surprise I was down 4 lbs.!!!! So I am also inspired! I excercise everyday for 1 hour on the treadmill as well. Keep us informed on how your doing, I am routing for you!

Katherine, how great is that!!! And what's so neat about this plan is that it changes the way you handle your hunger now.. Your willpower gets stronger and stronger as your stomach gets flatter and flatter :-)

We went to a fair the other night and the smell of all that fattening food and seeing all the chubby people chowing down on all of it actually turned me OFF instead of wanting to join them. We had a delicious grilled chicken salad before we got there, and when we were by a lemonade stand I asked the lady if she had any without sugar..very sweeet lady, she said she was about to make a new batch and would make me one without sugar. She was making it with real lemons and filtered, bottled water (I was pleasantly surprised at that). I had a pack of splenda in my purse so I stirred it in and had something to sip on while we walked around for about 2 miles. My thin husband had a fried apple pie for his 'treat' and it didn't bother me at all.

I am sleeping better than ever; I've always fallen asleep easily but kept waking up several times a night.. now, with this diet and all the walking I'm doing, I sleep the night thru; I feel so much more rested in the morning, and people at my office are somewhat sick of my good mood, lol. They want to lose weight and quit the bad eating habits, but they've just not made up their minds to say no to the bear claws when they see them, so they eat them and then stay disgusted with themselves.

Congrats to all who are sticking with it, and if you keep falling off the wagon, just start over the next day.. don't beat yourself up for weak moments, forget about them and start over with day one.. and remember to drink all the water; it really helps you stay in a mood where you feel like you can win this battle. You can be 30-40 lbs lighter by the Christmas Holidays; it would be a fabulous gift to yourself!!
