Has Anyone Read This Book: The Metabolism Miracle?

Vote 47 Votes

A new book published in April 09 by Diane Kress, a registered dietitian and weight-loss specialist, caught my interest this morning, and I couldn't find any reviews about it on this blog.

It's called "The Metabolism Miracle: 3 Easy Steps to Regain Control of Your Weight... Permanently." It discusses how many people who have trouble losing weight may have a condition called Metabolism B, which apparently causes your body to overprocess carbs into excess body fat.

Through a method which she has designed, as well as recipes and advice, she claims she can help those with Metabolism B lose weight.

I just wondered if anyone out there has read this, and has any thoughts or reviews on whether it worked for them or even helped at all? Thanks!

Metabolism B is something Kress made up. She's flogging a new diet book, just another addition to the confusion dieters suffer from. Do a search on "Metabolism B" and you'll have your answer.

  • The process of converting carbohydrates into fat is called de novo lipogenesis. It's exceedingly rare, and requires a carbohydrate intake in excess of the individual's total daily energy expenditure. Almost nobody eats that much carbohydrate. Sorry.

Of course, offering up yet another excuse as to why people are fat is a sure fire way to make money. People will buy because most of them will do anything to avoid cutting calories and exercising.

      Amen.

    • So how many grams of carbs would it take to cause this condition?

  • Actually the book is not an excuse. She wants you to excercise and debunks the myth that you can lose weight without working out. Maybe you should read the book before you try to give your expert opinion. It is a very sensible and healthy eating plan.

    • I have read the book and I am on day 5 of trying this out. I have lost a lot of weight in the past after the birth of my son, however I have steadily gained weight back even though I have been sticking to the program that I had lost the weight on. The book makes sense. I have had more energy and have not been tempted to binge on carbs in the evening. If nothing else... I am making better choices to fill me up. I will check back to let everyone know how I make out. PS... My pants are slightly looser only day 5

      • Hi Penny,

I wonder if you might possibly share some info with me to get me started. I don't have the money to buy this book yet and I desperately want to ease some of my symptoms. Just trying a few of the tricks I read online I have lost a few pounds, but I want to get started on the 8 weeks and start to feel better and really start losing. Please email me: heatherannechaney@yahoo.com
        Thank you! :) Heather

  • I started on this metabolism miracle food plan on May 28th. As of today, July 10th I am still on it. I have lost 14 lbs and I have never felt better. For me it wasn't just about the weight loss. I had all the other symptoms the book mentions. I was tired, having trouble sleeping, ect. I feel great. I have more weight to lose..I feel confident that I will lose it and continue to eat like this forever. I am not hungry and I don't miss the sugar. I liked this book because Diane is a nutritionist who learned the hard way that just cutting calories and watching fats, ect. just doesn't work for everyone. A lot of health care professionals will look at you as if you are a liar when you tell them "I have followed the diet 100%, and I am not losing weight." Not everyone loses weight the same, no matter what we are told.

  • Metabolism B does exist and it lumps people into its' category that have conditions like pre-diabetes, PCOS, Metabolic Syndrome etc. Are you folks stating that those aren't real conditions either? Maybe you should read the book instead of just throwing out your opinions. I have been following the plan for 7 days and have already lost 6 lbs. Clearly this is not another fad diet, since she has used it for over 3,000 patients. Until you know what you are talking about, I wouldn't comment!!!

      Hi!
Did you say the book actually mentions PCOS?
I have suffered from that condition and it does make weight loss very difficult, amongst other things.
Does it give you an eating plan or advice for each condition?
That sounds interesting. Thanks for posting.

  • Another term for Metabolism B is Metobolic Syndrome and yes this is a real condition. I suffer from Metabolic Syndrome and PCOS. Due to these conditions, I have Hypertension, High Cholesterol, and suffer from depression. I am 34 y/o. I work out @ least three times a week @ CURVES. Aside from working out, I work full time, and attend college. Not to mention keeping up with my 14 y/o. For the most part, I am a healthy eater I never keep still, however I continue to be overweight. When I heard about Diane Kress's discovery, I felt as if a burden had been lifted off of me. Someone finally has an answer. I intend to purchase this book and try it out.

Yes, and I'll be starting induction after Labor Day (I am preparing for it by trying some things now, so I won't cheat during the 8 week induction). I look forward to reading other people's responses to the program.

  • I am just finishing up my second day of the Miracle plan. So far so good, I do have the headache, grumpiness, hunger pains and weakness that the book said I would for at least three days. I'm so excited over this that I don't even mind! Finally, something that I have every faith will work for me. Over the last eight months I have been counting every calorie, walking mile after mile, working out like a crazed fool and have only lost 38 lbs. The last three months have been a struggle just to maintain that loss! I get the book, low and behold, it appears to have been written specifically for me! I was looking for a support group of like dieters when I came across this site. Does anyone know if one exists yet?

  • I have been on this plan for nearly 2 weeks now. The information made great sense to me and I was relieved to know many others had the same problems and food cravings I had. I have to admit that when it said to persevere throughout the first three days that when you wake up on the fourth day, all will be well, I was skeptical. However, on the fourth day, I woke up and the cravings had gone. I had more energy and was staying asleep all night. Amazing! .. yes, a miracle.
The best thing that happened was not the few inches I have already dropped or the nearly 10 pounds. The pounds are mostly fluid that I was carrying to metabolize the carbs, no doubt. But, not having the extra fluid makes me feel hugely better. Back to the best thing ... my blood sugar. I had taken to using Avandia and Zocor and Starlix (yes, I am in touch with my Dr). This bothered me greatly because I know that once taking meds regularly, it is a slippery slope. I stopped taking them and about 36 hours after starting the plan, my blood sugar was closer to normal than it had been in a very long time. This plan has you eating. It does not have you starving. I knew from when I was pregnant that a bedtime protein snack helped me feel better in the night and morning. I didn't know then why that was. Now, I know, it was my blood sugar cycling. I used to think my hormones were making me wake in a sweat.. not so! It was my blood sugar! My Dr enlightened me and I was on a whole new quest! Not too long ago, my blood sugar ranged 140 to 276 at any given time. I did not know the extent of my swings and how 'well' my liver was responding to my eating .. esp in regards to timing. New thought to me... skip a meal and gain weight. WOW! Liver working but against me. My A1C was good but I had some high readings that proved my sugar was dropping somewhere. Not good, the swings are hard on your body and it was happening to me all the time.
All I can say is that I am in this for the long haul. I love how it makes me feel. My blood sugar was 107 at bedtime last night and 111 this morning. Not perfect but I will take it any day of the week! I can eat.. I NEED to eat. I know what kinds of foods to eat. I am armed and going forward! I am happy. I am encouraged. I know every day will not be easy because I love the foods that got me this way. At this point, I feel that if I lose weight, it is gravy. I have found enough reason without weight loss to love this. It is not Adkins with high fat and no carbs. There are plenty of free foods. No, you cannot have fries, but once the three days are over... you really do not crave! It is such a freedom!
One thing that sticks in my mind and I have shared with many people is the author's remark about fat intake. She says something to the effect of what fat do you want your body to burn? .. yours or that of the food you are putting into your body? Nice. That will make me choose low fat everything!

  • I started this diet last week and was a bit skeptical as to whether it would work or if I could even do it; I love pastas and couldn't image not having them. After one week I am down 5.5 lbs and I feel better than I have in a long time.
I started this at 221 lbs and I am 5'4", 33 years old, have PCOS, and I fully believe that this is going to be the one thing that finally works.
The book is 100% correct that the cravings do go away and you do have more energy. I am actually looking forward to the next 7 weeks of this rather than dreading it like I have in the past with other diets that didn't work.

  • I am just starting the first Step (8 weeks of very limited carbs--no more than 5 NET carbs every 5 hours). The author is correct that one has to read the actual label, not just the advertising on the front, to calculate Net Carbs (total grams carbs minus ONLY fiber grams), and limit to not more than 5 grams every 5 hrs. I don't have any identified illness, but know that with more weight than "ideal" (and despite an intense workout schedule--spinning at 25 mph at 110+ watts, for 90 minutes 2x/week, and weights for 45 min/3x week--) I am a possible candidate for Type 2 Diabetes...something I definitely want to avoid. Also, I know that I am a carbo addict. I would also recommend that you read "The End of Overeating" by David Kessler, former U.S. Surgeon General...he describes, in grotesque detail, how the food industry is "high-jacking" our palates, getting our brains programmed to eat more fat, more sugar and more salt. Kress' program will take us off all that: I've now prohibited any food which comes in a bag or a box...the end of processed food! The only thing I'm going to miss, at the end of this summer, are fruits...but there is always next year!!!

Nay-sayers, try it before you condemn it. I am about to end week 5 of the 8-week step 1 of the program. I feel fantastic, have lost about 15 pounds (I do weigh weekly)and do NOT dread the rest of this program. On previous diets I would wake up in the morning dreading the day because of all of the sacrificing, hunger, etc. Now it's not about what I CAN'T eat, but what I CAN eat, and how much better I feel. I am exercising when I can, about 3x per week for an hour. I am eagerly looking forward to step 2 in 3 more weeks when I can add back some fruit and whole wheat bread. The cravings are gone. Now, I would LOVE to sit down and eat a pint of ice cream, but it doesn't consume my life the way it used to. I used to feel deprived and depressed when I'd diet because of what I was missing. Now I just look forward to fitting back into the clothes that are in my closet and am delighted when I put on a pair of pants that used to be tight that are now loose.

Whether or not Metabolism B is an "invented" disorder doesn't matter. What matters is realizing what those carbs were doing to my system and getting rid of them and heading toward a more healthy life.

  • My husband and I started this diet a week ago. The author is a dietician and describes her spiral into diabetes Type 2. I could thoroughly relate to her experience and the symptoms she describes. They are the same ones I have experienced as I, too, developed diabetes Type 2.

My husband seems to have "Metabolism B" as well but there is no genetic predisposition for diabetes Type 2, thank God.

I have tried many changes in diet in order to get my diabetes in check. Most of the time it's been OK, but lately it's become difficult. My doctor put me on insulin which I had refused before.

Since starting this diet, I am off of one med (a diuretic) and my A1C panel dropped from 8.5 to 6.9. I feel that I'm on my way. My blood glucose reading this morning was 103. I've decreased my insulin intake by half due to lower readings.

I feel great. My energy is up.

I ride my bike at least 5 times a week for 30 minutes. Exercise is absolutely necessary.

As far as weight loss is concerned, she asks that we don't weight ourselves for 8 weeks. However, I had a doctor's appointment yesterday and discovered that I am down 6 lbs. I am 5'6" and currently weigh 206. I was 212 at the beginning of this diet.

I should add that she points to several factors that cause the onset of diabetes and the inability to get it under control. I was always in excellent health and my weight was anywhere from slightly thin to normal until I hit my late 30s. The weight began piling on and the usual weight-loss methods no longer worked. Add to that, a return to school for a master's degree, a move to a new city, a divorce, a re-marriage and later, Katrina, stress has been a huge factor in my diabetes. My father died of a heart attack at 62. Although it was never diagnosed, my guess is he had uncontrolled diabetes.

I will not go the way of my father who was also a fine physical specimen until his late 30s.

  • It has been very interesting reading everyone's comments. The unfortunate thing with blogs and forums, is that ofter times lots of opinions paired with inaccurate information gets posted. If you don't like the book or don't agree that it is something that would work for you, then that is fine, caution that the book is very specific. I have read the book and I started the new way of eating on 9/14/09. I do not suffer from any of the medical conditions the book mentions...but I should say do not suffer from them yet, but some of my relatives do. My weight classifies my as obese, I have hit a block and can't seem to lose weight and change how I eat, which I have to do, or I will develop some of the medical conditions that are listed. I am 28 years old and have to make these changes now! Yes Step One is a strict 8 weeks, but read the whole book. By Step Three, you have the control, the weight loss, and the knowledge to eat a balanced diet of all the food groups necessary for excellent nutrition. I need the strictness of Step One, not to get myself off medications, but the teach myself control and how to say no to bad choices. I can't just say no to a bowl of mac and cheese, but I can't have that now, I won't have that. But by Step Three I can and will choose to have a balanced portion of whole wheat pasta with fresh tomatoes instead. Will a part of me always want the mac and cheese, um... of course. Will I be able to find a healthier take of the recipe, why not. But the new 60 pounds less person in me won't let that happen, and will have more control and better decision making with food.
Everyone's metabolism is different. Read this book, learn how to eat in a new way that will work with your body instead of against it. Yes this is a diet, but hello a diet is described as a persons eating habits. Just change your diet forever! Best of luck in reaching your goals and lets use this blog as a means of support for that!

    :) A :)

I bought the book last week and starte on Thursday. I have completely lost the afternoon slump, and the general sluggishness. Only 4 days in, but this has been easier than I thought.

I have ordered the book but it won't be in for a week. For those that have already been on this diet can you give me an idea of what veggies and fruits, meats etc that are allowed. Just a few till I get the complete book. Thanks.

Hi Kathy- Step one is a lot of veggies, just certain ones...peppers, cucumbers, broccoli, cauliflower, eggpant and a bunch of others. The ones you can't have are my favorites, corn, peas, carrots...There is no fruit in step one. The protein is pretty open, but needs to be lean. Cheese needs to be low fat.

I am not hungry, food is not consuming my mind, and I can live on the menu plans that have been set out. This is not difficult and hopefully I will get the results I am wanting. I am feeling lighter, not so bloated, not feeling like a zombie after a meal, and mid afternoon. Blood sugar readings are lower by a pt. or two, , so I believe I am headed in the right direction. Will update often as I can.

When the clerk pulled it up in the computer it was only $16.95 instead of $25. There was no shipping charge and it arrived Wed (23rd), only four days. I've been reading it thoroughly and will start Monday the 28th. I am concerned about only 5 carbs at a time. It scares me. Looking forward to getting past the first three days. Grumpy? Headaches?

This is a GREAT plan!! I read the book in August and started the diet August 15th. I was definitely an apple shape, have always been, and nothing has ever worked like this diet! I've lost 24 lbs, have about 12 more to go and I'll be at 140. I'm 5'9" so my doctor said that would be perfect. She also gave the thumbs up for me to go on this diet. (She's my next door neighbor so we walk together and she's very proud of me and recommending this book to her 'apple' patients!!

I totally recommend it to anyone who counting calories hasn't worked. The first 3 days were tough but I went exactly by the book and kept myself busy and got thru it with no problem. The greatest thing about it is you learn to eat the right foods for this problem, plus she wants you to start an exercise program, which is good for all of us. I have always walked but have never had the overall strength OR the overall good mood I'm in these days.

Stick with it, get excited about it, tell yourself you can do it this time and I promise you it will work!!

jeanne, I just saw your post.. yes, try the 'sweet' recipes! The brownies are great!! Once you lose the cravings for sugary things, and that will come, I promise you, but you'll find the least sweet thing made w/splenda is way sweet enough. Regular peanut butter is sugary sweet to me now. I've gotten so used to natural PB, it's great to me now.

Plussss, the main thing about this diet, besides feeling so much lighter and having more energy, you feel so good about yourself for sticking with it! Just stay 'bought up' on everything you'll need for days to come. You can do this; it's not hard once you get over the first few days.

Hi Julie- Thanks for the comments. I do not miss the tiredness and bloated feeling of two weeks ago. I think the fact I feel so much better means this is the type of plan I need. On other plans I did not experience the energy change- so the diet changes just seemed arduous. Feeling so much better mentally and physically makes it easier. I just need to find some other snacks to have- but overall I am in love with this plan.

jeanne, I love sugar free gelatin with a few walnuts. I order organic walnuts from wilderness family naturals, no connection to them (wish I was:-) but they're the best out there, IMO. They also have great olive oil and everything's organic.

When I don't have any low carb bread, I take a whole wheat pita and quarter it, then halves the quarters. It doesn't sound like much but when it's toasted it's very good with peanut butter or with mayo and mustard and piled high with lean turkey/chicken/ham.

Also, stir your natural peanut butter, put a little in a tiny bowl and microwave, then stir in about 1/3 pack splenda and fill celery sticks with it.. really satisfying. The vanilla protein shakes will keep your sweet tooth in check, too. Sweet potato fries are fabulous with cinnamon & splenda.

Make the brownie muffins one evening, freeze most of them and you'll have something sweet to grab. I haven't tried the cinnamon muffins yet but they look great with the sour cream!! I've loved all of the ricotta pudding flavors, chocolate, lemon and cinnamon; they're all delicious!

Just plan on making a few recipes, buy all the ingredients and munch on a few nuts while you're baking; it's fun, plus you'll be so proud for sticking to it!!

jeanne, I like stevia (truvia) now even better than splenda, but I'll have to look to see if you can cook with it. I'm like you, never one for equal, sweet & low, etc. but my doctor said splenda is safe, just don't overdo it in a day and always drink 64 oz of filtered water everyday, along with your coffee, tea, etc.

I made the Italian Vegetable Soup this morning and it is fantastic!!!

alice, Kroger has yogurt with 3 grams of carbs..I have it for lunch with ham and cheese roll-ups, celery sticks with peanut butter and I'm totally satisfied. Good luck; just remember if you stick it out for the first 3 days the hardest part is over.. your energy and good mood will shock you!!

Last night we had a steak on the grill, big salad and mashed cauliflower. My husband, a big meat and potatoes man, said the 'potatoes' were really good. I waited until he was through before I told him he was eating cauliflower:) He also thought the broccoli cheese casserole was great and he hates mushrooms, or so he thought.

It's really just taking the time to season everything and go right by her recipes. It takes time to assemble the ingredients but you get used to it, and believe me, it's well worth it when those skinny jeans will fit with room to spare!!!

Stock up on protein shakes so when you need something sweet and don't feel like cooking or don't have the time, grab a cold shake and it'll really take your mind off sugar.

  • Hi again. Last time I wrote, I was only a week into the diet. Now I'm 5 weeks in and wanted to share some of the results.

I know it says not to weigh yourself but I did. I've lost 11 pounds. I'm diabetic (Type 2) and had blood sugar readings all over the place. They have been stable in the 80 to 110 range. I was taking 40mg of insulin daily and am now down to 20. My doctor has taken me off of one medication and has halved another. My guess is that my A1C panel is going to mirror my progress.

As far as carb cravings go, they're gone. My energy is fantastic and my mood is good.

My main criticism would be variety. I tend to get stuck repeating the recipes I've already made. I'm getting tired of a handful of nuts, olives and low-fat cheese as a snack. Does anyone have any other ideas?

Advice? Beware of all the fat in this diet even if it is low-fat. And, by all means - excercise. My bike and I have a new appreciation for each other.

nolality, those are great results; congrats bigtime!!!

For snacks I've tried everything on her list with the exception of zucchini muffins.. My favorites are low carb shakes & protein shakes.. get them really cold and they are so satisfying.

I love sugar free popsicles, meringue cookies..love the parmesan chips and crispy tortilla chips with salsa..

Sugar free gelatin with 2 or 3 big walnut halves is a regular for me; keep a jar of celery sticks in your fridge to put natural peanut butter on, delish!!!

Low carb/sugar yogurts and hot chocolates are very good, too. I also keep a container of bell pepper strips in the fridge which are great with light ranch dressing and a few parmesan or tortilla chips..

You do have to watch the fat.. I love olive oil and had to really cut back roasting veggies because I was used to sprinkling lots of EVOO, kosher salt and freshly ground pepper on them and popping in the oven at 450 for about 20 mins.. I still do it but instead of sprinkling the whole pan with olive oil, I put the veggies in a bowl, measure out 1 tablespoon of olive oil and toss and toss until all of them have a little bit on them.

I'm keeping a food diary of everything I eat and try to keep it low fat that way.. Each night I list what I'm gonna eat the next day, another list for what to buy immediately and days to come.

If you stay organized and do exactly what she says, it'll really make a difference in your life!

However, I weighed myself again and found that in 8 weeks on this I had lost 19lbs. I have not been under 200 lbs in over 4 years and I am now only a couple of pounds of getting under it again.
I can't believe how great I feel and how easy this has been. I truly hope that all of you succeed with this as well as I am. This eating plan is a life saver and a life changer.

Katherine, how great is that!!! And what's so neat about this plan is that it changes the way you handle your hunger now.. Your willpower gets stronger and stronger as your stomach gets flatter and flatter :-)

We went to a fair the other night and the smell of all that fattening food and seeing all the chubby people chowing down on all of it actually turned me OFF instead of wanting to join them. We had a delicious grilled chicken salad before we got there, and when we were by a lemonade stand I asked the lady if she had any without sugar..very sweeet lady, she said she was about to make a new batch and would make me one without sugar. She was making it with real lemons and filtered, bottled water (I was pleasantly surprised at that). I had a pack of splenda in my purse so I stirred it in and had something to sip on while we walked around for about 2 miles. My thin husband had a fried apple pie for his 'treat' and it didn't bother me at all.

I am sleeping better than ever; I've always fallen asleep easily but kept waking up several times a night.. now, with this diet and all the walking I'm doing, I sleep the night thru; I feel so much more rested in the morning, and people at my office are somewhat sick of my good mood, lol. They want to lose weight and quit the bad eating habits, but they've just not made up their minds to say no to the bear claws when they see them, so they eat them and then stay disgusted with themselves.

Congrats to all who are sticking with it, and if you keep falling off the wagon, just start over the next day.. don't beat yourself up for weak moments, forget about them and start over with day one.. and remember to drink all the water; it really helps you stay in a mood where you feel like you can win this battle. You can be 30-40 lbs lighter by the Christmas Holidays; it would be a fabulous gift to yourself!!

I also read about this diet in Woman's World. (love this little magazine--quick read, fun stuff!)
I bought the book and have been staying faithful for more than week. However, I'm not losing any weight. I admit I do fill fuller, longer...no cravings. First three days were no harder than any other diet. Hoping it works soon as I need feedback to stay motivated. Otherwise, it's just another diet that I can't stick with.

  • N, are you drinking all the water? I lost 10 lbs my first week, lost none the next week even though I was eating the exact amts of carbs, etc., but lost another 8 the 3rd week. I've lost 29 lbs so far and I started mid-Aug.

I hope to lose about 8 more, then I'll maintain that by adding in a few more fruits, whole grain breads, but I feel like I'm over simple sugars; never even think about junk food anymore. It's a great way to eat. I haven't slept so soundly in decades!!

Has anyone else experienced these problems while on this plan?

  • I have ordered the book, and am excited to start the plan after Thanksgiving (Canadian!). My next-door neighbour has been on the plan for 4 weeks, and has lost 10 pounds. She totally believes in this diet(?) and has inspired me to give it a try. I need to lose about 40 pounds and really hope this works for me - I almost feel like it's too much to hope for as I've been battling my weight for most of my adult life. One concern - I will be 58 at the end of this month. Are there any other women my age who have had success with this plan? I could lose weight much more easily when I was younger than I can now. Gaining weight is no problem, but losing it, not so much!

  • I am just finishing up Week 2 of Step 1 and I have lost 4lbs - whooo hooo! I did experience a little fatigue the first few days, but did not have any headaches luckily. This diet is a bit hard for me as I am a lacto-ovo vegetarian, however as long as I make the recipes and plan ahead of time, it works out just fine. I excercise 30 minutes a day, 5 times per week. I feel great! This diet is definitely working for me! I am excited to continue on and see the results :)

  • Diane is NOT crazy or someone just trying to make money off people with a made up syndrome, metabolism, or illness. SHE is real and PCOS is real! She HAS PCOS and tried other diet, exercise, nutrition plans that did not help her take control of her insulin levels. She then decided to help others by helping herself. I commend her! In fact, I love her for it! It is sad that in this day in age that so many people defraud and harm others that people like Diane (angels in disguise) are treated with such torment! God Bless you Diane! Thank you for all you have done and continue to do to help everyone with hormone and metabolism issues! Don't let people get you down. Remember: understanding makes tolerance unnecessary!

  • I so agree, Katie.. this diet has changed my life! I no longer crave cheeseburgers, ice cream, Pepsi or any other junk food.

I look forward to seeing how many organic veggies I can put in grilled chicken salads now; also, using different seasonings to marinate the chicken before grilling it can change the entire taste.

This is an easy diet with tremendous results; you just have to use all the willpower you have at first, then it becomes very natural to you to want the healthy foods.

  • I also read about this diet in Woman's World, and was intrigued. I have PCOS and have battled my weight my entire life. I have lost over 100 pounds 6 different times, only to regain it every single time. I found out last year that I was insulin resistant, and probably have been for most of my life, therefore my random insulin results were 325. That is enough insulin flowing through my body for 13 or 14 people. The doctors said it was a miracle that I had not lost liver, pancrease, or kidney function, or had a major heart attack. At 354 pounds and 5'4", I was so morbidly obese that I had trouble doing everything. I had developed gout so bad in both of my feet, due to the hyperinsulinemia that I was on a walker, and thought I was going to lose the use of my feet at 40 years old. The doctor prescribed 1500 mg of metformin a day, and changing my diet and adding lots of exercise has allowed me to lose 120 pounds, but lately, just like all the times before, I notice that I'm stalled, and no matter what I do, it seems the weight is not coming off anymore. Even on this medication, my insulin levels are still a little high, and blood sugar readings are not what I would like them to be. My cholesterol has come back to normal, but my triglycerides are still high, and I'm beginning the Metabolism Miracle today. I am a case study in syndrome x or metabolic syndrome, so it will be interesting to find out how it works. I will keep you informed.

Where most of us just want to fit in our skinny clothes or look good for an upcoming event, your life depends on your strength and willpower AND a good doctor who knows what to presribe for you.

I am so glad you added exercise; it is so very important for all of us, especially if we want a diet to work like it should.

PLEASE come back and let us know how you're doing. Giant cyber hug :-)

    • Thank you so much Julie. I really appreciate that. I have to say that this program seems much easier than I first thought it was going to be, and also, I can see a difference. I'm almost afraid to jinx myself, but these last three mornings, I've woken up rested and refreshed, ready to get up and do something, and I've never felt that way in my life. Not even as a teenager. I've always felt like I have to crank myself up. I don't have any cravings at all, which is highly unusual. I don't seem to have that brain fog that I normally have either. I guess I'm just kind of in shock at the difference I'm feeling, because I honestly didn't expect to feel any different. I'm the biggest skeptic in the world, because I've tried EVERYTHING over the years, from Weight Watchers, Adkins, South Beach, and every other crazy thing there is out there, and even though I did lose weight on some of them, I never really FELT any better. Then, no matter what I did, after awhile, the weight loss would stall, and then slowly start to creep back up. I thought I was the only person in the world who had these problems. I'm amazed at how many people there are out there experiencing the same things. It's very nice to know I have company and support. I really appreciate it, and I'll keep you informed. Hugs!

I have not had any white carbs, watch carbs in all veggies I eat and with my meat. I still exercise everyday, but not feeling any lighter people. I am starting to lose faith, especially when you give up so much for so little lose. Any suggestions out there???

  • Janet, so happy to see you're feeling better. I lost 40 lbs about 4 yrs ago on South Beach and gained every ounce back, and I didn't go back to double cheeseburgers and candy bars, just normal eating, like a sandwich, yogurt, potatoes, cereal, regular food and never seconds, etc.,but still the weight came back.

This plan is so different because she knows what carbs to add in and getting the exercise and drinking all the water helps so much.

Laura, sorry to read about your plateau. Are you drinking the water and walking or rebounding? A doctor in our neighborhood told me the other day that using a mini trampoline and rebounding just 5 minutes at first, then working up to 15 minutes was like walking an hour!! Plus, he said, the rebounding gets the lymph gland fluids moving and really helps expel the toxins (and fat if we're dieting) out of our bodies.

I hurried to Wal Mart and bought a little rebounder and started doing it that afternoon while I watched tv. I also found some interesting articles online about rebounding and exactly how to do it to get the results we're looking for. I'm doing it everyday for about 10 minutes now but I still walk with my friends.

If you've stalled, though, I would start a food diary and write everything down. Also make little circles and check thru them for your 8) 8oz glasses of water. Weigh out the carbs portion if you have kitchen scales (they're real cheap at wal mart, too:) carbs may be slipping in with bigger portions.

I give sugar free jello and walnuts the biggest reason I have been so true to this diet. That fills me up so much and the walnuts give me so much energy! It's my favorite snack now.

Plus, I'm re-doing my closet (paint and new shelves, new light) and seeing the big sizes fall off me now is my greatest incentive.

Spend as much time in your closet as you can. Stay organized, get bought up on low carbs foods and write out your menus for days ahead, then get the heck out of the kitchen. Also, keep your kitchen spotless and it'll be more fun to prepare the right things instead of it depressing you and you reaching for something quickly that may not be on the plan.

    • Julie, yes, I am drinking all the water plus some, and walking 2 1/2 to 3 miles a day. I have slivered almonds for breakfast and or snack. Salad at lunch with allotted dressing with under 5 gs. carbs. Dinner consist of meat, and vegetable and and salad, with a small amount of fat in dressing or butter. I am Type 2 diabetes and I have noticed my morning blood glucose readings have dropped by a point or so, but the weight isn't moving. I work a 8 hour a day, so being in the kitchen is not the problem, and if I snack in the evening before bed, it is nuts, or peanuts.
I feel I am being very diligent in this diet. I will say I am feeling better and having more energy, but very disappointed in the lack of weight loss. This seems to be the story of my life, I have hit a plateau on every diet I have been on and at this same weight that I am now. Makes me wonder, is this my body weight at what it is meant to be, I just want to drop another 15 lbs. I will try the food journal. Not about to buy a rebounder, I have an entire exercise room of equipment, and there is no more room. Thanks for your feedback, I appreciate it.

      • Laura - a discussion on another board about this WOE was debating the almonds as a factor for stalled and slowed weight loss. Several of the women were eating a lot of almonds as their snacks and they were having trouble with getting the weight off. The last I knew they had cut out hte almonds and they were starting to see better results. My self I have been eating mixed nuts or sugar free jello and also lavash bread with natural peanut butter and sugar free jelly for snacks during hte day and before bed. I started step two with a weight loss of nearly 20lbs so I know that this WOE works.
Remember also that muscle really does weigh more than fat so if you are doing that much walking then you may just be replacing the fat. Do you feel that your clothes fit better? That would be the better measurement.

  • Thanks Julie. I feel so much better. I'm sorry to hear you are having such a problem Laura. I'm wondering if you are eating enough. You still have to ingest enough calories that your body does not think it's starving. If you are working out very diligently, then you may need to eat more. Also, are you doing strength training? It helps tremendously boost your metabolism, and keep your body from dropping water instead of fat. Give it a try. I agree with Julie. Write down everything you eat, go online and look up the calorie content, then eat a hundred calories or so more each day to see if it gives you a boost. Further more, regardless of what diet you are on, you either have to poop it out, pee it out, or sweat it out. Are you constipated, not peeing very much. Think about that. I have to say after my first week, I feel like a new person. I have so much energy, and every day the past week, my blood sugar reading has been in the normal range for the first time since I started using my glucose monitor, and that has been almost a year. My aches and pains have gone away. I sleep like a baby at night, which I've never done, and I'm down a little over 2 pounds. I'm down to 230, so I'm excited, but still in shock that I've gotten the results that I have. If this program really works like Diane Kress says it does, then I think she is a genius. I'll keep you posted.

    • Constipation might be the culprit??? Peeing enough is not an issue. I am drinking the recommended water plus some and this is not a problem with me, I always have a bottle of water in my hand. I need fibre in this diet. Is a fibre supplement allowed I wonder. I have natural ones, I will give this a try. I understand Janet what you are saying about the body in starvation mode, I don't think this is an issue either. I am not hungry nor feel the desire to eat and put everything in my mouth, and my lunch and dinner are well proportioned. I will pursue even though the weight isn't dropping off because I do feel better and more energy is there and not bloated like I tend to get after eating carbs. I like that the most, I don't blow up after a meal. LOL

  • Hey there folks,
Everything is going really well. I just finished week 2, and still going strong. I've lost another 4 pounds, and I've already lost over an inch off my waist, so I'm stoked. I still have no cravings. My energy levels are through the roof, and everyone seems to think I've lost much more than 6 pounds in the last couple of weeks, which is pretty cool. I haven't experienced any negative effects from cutting out the carbs, and I can tell I'm losing more fat than anything, because my body is getting harder. I am really excited to continue on the program.

  • Hey Janet!! Those are wonderful results; so glad you are still stoked:-) I'm down to 139 this morning so I've lost 37 lbs since mid Aug!! It's so easy once your mind is wrapped around watching everything you put in your mouth. We get in the habit of eating just because food is all around us and it takes willpower to just have water or a small snack that's on the plan.

I know if I hadn't added exercise and stayed organized with buying the right foods I would have failed by now. I've gotten so hooked on walking; at first it was a pain to make myself do it, but now I actually loook forward to it. I hope everyone else is succeeding and feeling great about it!!

I do not get out for regular exercise or drink the required amount of water but intend to do so. I have had weight problems all of my life from age 10. I am not obese but would like to lose about 30 lbs and stay there. I am a senior and wonder if this is part of the problem. Are there any other senior's out there, over 65 yrs.

I am praying that this program will be the answer to all of my prayers and give me hope to move on in life and not worry so much about my weight.

  • Maureen and Pamela, so happy to read your posts and I'll be pulling for you to muster up all the willpower you can to stay on this program. It's really meant the world to me. I've tried them all and had some success but until I made time and made myself start a walking routine, none lasted and I regained every ounce and then some.

What I found so easy with this diet was, if I'd go right by her book and try just about everything for snacks and the different menus, I lost weight rapidly. But, adding in the regular exercise program I believe was the key to continued good moods that prompted me to stay on the diet plan.

That little mini-trampoline really gives me a work out. You wouldn't think it'd do all that much but I feel so great after rebounding on it for 15 minutes now. I started out with 5 minutes and thought that was hard at the time:-) Walking 3 miles now every afternoon is so much fun, and at the beginning 1/2 mile got me winded.

It's just amazing what you can get your body used to doing, whether it's good for you, like eating right and exercising, or eating junk food and never getting off the couch. You have to be in charge and make good habits rule instead of the other way around.

It's hard, at first. Your body doesn't want to change until you show it who's boss. Then it gets with the program and rewards you with an unbelievable good mood every single morning and hangs in there with you while you eat right and exercise, rewarding you with fabulous sleep like when you were a kid.

I didn't have children so I entered menopause earlier than most, at 49 yrs old. I'm 54 now and I had 2 people just last week tell me I didn't even look 40!! I took that as a great compliment because I've seen, myself, wrinkles disappear; my skin is smoother, eyes brighter, my posture is much better, and it's because I feel good about myself now. That self confidence shows off for others to see and it's contagious.

Stay organized, make lists of what you're eating, what you're gonna eat, and what you need to buy. And, above all, get outside, even if you have to drive to a mall, and walk a little bit everyday. You'll be shocked at how soon you can go farther and farther. Hold your stomach in while you walk; it'll tighten up those muscles around your middle.

Good luck; I think about all of you who are trying to change for the better and say a prayer for your willpower and strength to stick with it.

  • Hey folks,
I'm in the middle of week 4 on the MM and I've lost a total of 9 pounds and even more impressively, 8 inches, with almost 2 coming off my waist. My husband has even started the program, and in 2 weeks has lost 5 pounds. What I'm most impressed by is not the weight and inches, however, it is the difference in the blood sugar readings and blood pressure. I have never had high blood pressure. It's always been low, but it had started to slide into the "normal" range of about 120/76. It is now back down into my normal 100/65 range, and for the first time since I found out I was insulin resistant, my fasting blood sugar readings (which were always my worst) are down into the low 80's range. I'm amazed, because even being on metformin ( 1500 mg per day) for a year, I was never able to get it below 103, and it hasn't been over 100 since I started the program. One thing I find fascinating about the program is that I don't care if I eat or not, and I used to think about food constantly. I thought I would be bored out of my mind with the limited food choices on the first phase of the program, but I'm not. I'm a big veggie person anyway, so I love all the different vegetable choices you can have. I'm still excited about what the next 4 weeks have to offer. Everyone thinks I've lost a lot more than I have, and my body feels much more firm. I have already dropped a size, so I'm really stoked. I hope everyone has success with this program. Oh, and by the way, the difference between this diet and the Zone is the three phases. You don't get fruit for the 1st 8 weeks, and the timing and amounts of carb are much more limited, and so are starchy foods. I tried the Zone years ago, and had no luck whatsoever with it, but whatever works for you is great. Good luck to everybody who is trying to lose weight. It truly is a battle. I've lost 130, and still have much more to go, but it truly has changed my life in every aspect. Good luck to everybody out there.

Has anyone had any mini 'hot flashes' on the MM diet ?

  • Hey everyone. I finished week 4 and still feeling great. I have lost another 2 pounds, for a total of 11. I still have no cravings and my blood sugar is so good I have the okay from my doctor to lower my metformin dosage from 1500 mg per day to 1000, so I feel awesome about that. I haven't had hot flashes on the program, but I sweat profusely. I've always had a tendency to retain a lot of fluid, but I really sweat since I started this, but I think that is just the body getting rid of toxins, so I think that is a good thing. Everyone keeps telling me how awesome I look, and they think I'm losing a lot more than I am.

  • That is so cool, Janet~ It really works when you find out where the problem lies; and that's with our metabolism. Once you get that in check by eating the right foods and exercising, it's so simple to stay healthy. You are making life changing decisions and I hope you are very proud of yourself!!

I always thought the reason trim and healthy people were always in such a good mood was because they KNEW they looked so good. Actually, it's because they FEEL so frickin' good, it can't help but show in their personality.

I've converted 4 people at my office and they email and call me many times daily for either a pep talk to hang in there when they're feeling weak or to let me know how GREAT they're already feeling. All 4 are in week 5 of this program. None had any form of regular exercise in their lives so they waited a week after starting the diet and all are now walking everyday.

I just work 3 mornings a week but they work a full week so I talked them into walking at lunch if I'd stay on and walk with them at a park near our office. We've had so much fun bringing our healthy lunches. We have a light snack around 11am and walk promptly at noon, then have our lunch around 12:40 at a picnic table in the park. They've all sent me the sweetest notes about how their lives have changed since we've started this routine. They keep it up on my days off and I'm very proud of them for that. I keep telling them it'd be very easy for all of us right now to slip back into bad habits, but it's so much more fun when you've got a little group of buds going through it with you.

I hope any and all of you trying your best to stay on this program are having great success with it. If you'll make up your mind to stick with it, I can't tell you how much easier and how great you'll feel as time passes. I have never slept as well as I'm doing now. I go to bed promptly at 10pm every night and my eyes just pop open right before 6am the next morning. I do a few stretches, it's good to flex your ankles up and down, and wiggle around stretching your back muscles a little before getting out of bed. I take this time to thank God for such a restful sleep and for another day to help others and MYSELF to live a life to be proud of in His eyes.

I just started the MM diet three days ago, might as well call it "last chance diet". In the past I never had problems losing weight, heck I wouldn't even diet I would just work out and I was in tip top shape. After I had my first child I lost the weight without a problem after my second child it took a little more effort but I still did it. Then for some reason things changed and I started gaining weight. I was working out five days a week I ate the right type of bread and pastas but was still gaining weight I hit 175 and felt so awful so gross and determined! My friend signed up for weight watchers and encouraged me to do so as well. This is just what I need I thought. WRONG! While she lost weight every week (and has lost 65 pounds to date) I was STARVING and only lost three pounds in one month. I quit and tried south beach, lost 4 pounds fell off the diet and regained everything, I then tried eating little to nothing a banana and apple was my dinner. Still I wasn't losing weight. My Grandmother read about this diet and suggested it to me. I have all the symptoms listed in the book except medication. I hope and pray this one works.

  • On day 4! Can someone please clear this up for me.. do the starred products (specifically the unsweetened soy milk and veggie meat products) count as a carb or are they free foods to eat as long as they are under 5g of carb? I am confused about that. Thanks and good luck everyone!

  • We started the program one week ago! It has been a very challenging week. Greg has lost 6 lbs and Chris has lost 4 lbs. His pants are loose, hers - not yet! Two days on the program and Chris had a business trip 3nights/4 days away from home. Even though we are NOT supposed to weigh ourselves, old habits never die! It was exciting to see the scale move. Normally an away trip would cause an extra pound or so. We will continue to remain focused for this up coming week. A business trip out of the country - now that is going to be a challenge! And Greg having to prepare for himself! We are spending a few hours in the kitchen tomorrow to make sure Greg is prepared and can make it through the week - - WISH US LUCK!

No headaches for Chris but Greg, a migraine sufferer spent Thursday in bed. We are feeling better and sleeping through the night. Our 20 year old son even ate dinner with us tonight - "Spaghetti" - using squash. Now that was an interesting recipe, but it was filling. I would make it again.

If I can get it under control I will have it made. If I eat low carb till I start will that help me get started after the holidays? I have tried to tell myself I hate pasta, it makes me sick and it won't work. Ijust keep going back for more so if this stops it I will give my book to all my family members to use

I made the cauliflower soup last night, didn't follow how she did it exactly (like using a food procesor) but it was actually good and filling. My kids even ate it. Well I'm hoping I'll see some weight loss soon. Good luck everyone!

  • Wow, it's so great to read all of your comments about this wonderful plan. Stick with the book, try a lot of recipes for variety and you'll see great results.

Jenny, I saw immediate weight loss the first week, 2nd week a big 0 even though I was doing exactly what she said, then the 3rd week another 8 lbs gone.

I've said it before but staying organized and making lists and taking time at the grocery store really helps you stick with this program. It became my new 'hobby' to keep a food journal, lists of everything I'd need for the next 4 days.

But exercising/walking kept me in such a good mood so I would continue everyday instead of falling off the wagon. I've dieted a million times but never had a regimented exercise program like now. I love walking so much now, I'll never give it up! You've read of natural high runners get, same thing with walking real fast.

My very best pat on the back for those of you hanging in there; this plan will change your life!

  • Where can I find low carb bread? I used to see it everywhere but I have been to several markets and can't find it. I am on day three and have never experienced the headaches or anything different than normal. I have not had a hard time of it.

  • Hi Tammy, Healthy Life is the brand I see in most grocery stores. It's great plain for sandwiches or toasted with natural peanut butter on it.
