How Did I Do Today? Advice Please!

This is what I ate today:

2 Slimfast shakes
Salad from McDonalds with crispy chicken and ranch dressing
2 nectarines
3 plums
2 brownies

Then I worked out for roughly an hour.

How do you guys think I'm doing?

I'd add more balance to your diet. You can't live from fruit and salads alone!

Add some carbs, perhaps cereal in the morning. What did you have for dinner? Deep-fried chicken and ranch dressing aren't necessary great, why not replace that with (home-cooked) chicken or turkey and maybe some rice and vegetables on the side.

How many calories is that? How many calories does your body need in a day?

ADD some carbs????? I don't think this type of diet is sustainable. You are getting a LOT of calories from sugar. One or two pieces of fruit is plenty.

Well, this is what I would have done or changed.

-Eat a good breakfast. I like to have eggbeaters, they have different flavors like SouthWestern.

    -Maybe some yogurt before lunch.

-If you are going out for lunch, maybe you can try SubWay? Have a six inch sub, avoid the white bread, lite on the mayo?

-If you are hungry before dinner have your brownie, if you really need it. If you can do without I would try some fruit or cottage cheese?

-For dinner have a peice of chicken, small salad and a baked potato?

    Just an idea :)

Also, how much water are you getting in? I would get a water bottle and attach it to your hip, haha. Anywhere I go, my water bottle goes. It's like people and thier cellphones!!!!

Honestly I think that's an awful diet. It's hugely restrictive, not enough calories (especially when you add in working out for an hour a day) and doesn't teach you any healthy eating habits. What's going to happen when you quit drinking Slimfast for a meal?

You need to eat healthy meals of REAL FOOD. You need a reasonable amount of calories - too few is as bad as too many. You need to balance out healthy carbs, protein, veggies and fruit, and healthy fats.

Nutrition is key to losing weight and keeping it off.

I don't think there is enough information for us to determine "how you [did]." How did YOU feel? Were there parts of the day where you were tired? Did you eat all of your food at once? Did you notice any sort of reaction in how you felt after eating your food?

My suggestion would be to add more complex carbs and more protein in general, but I think it's tough to really asses how you did given that this information is not very specific.

Do you log your food intake and calories at any sort of website? I personally use SparkPeople, but there are many valuable websites out there that will help you figure out what your macronutrient ratio is and how many calories you consume.

You also haven't mentioned your goals. Are you trying to lose weight? Build muscle? Both?

I think it's a good start to food logging and great job on the exercise! To really be successful, I think your efforts need to be a little more detailed.

I agree with the other comments. You are going to find yourself tired and wanting to give up. Sure, you might loss a couple of pounds (short term). You need to find a lifestyle eating habit that you are comfortable with daily (long term). It will take time, but you will reach your goals. Best Wishes!!!

Eat more veggies. Replace the crispy chicken with grilled chicken, eat something else besides fruit and brownies. You don't mention how big the brownies are, but if they're pretty big, two of them can add empty calories quickly.

Wow, where to begin. There is so much wrong with everything you ate today, and it is just the poster child of what is wrong with the diet industry.

Ok, step 1 - you are obviously viewing yourself as being "on a diet", which is never going to work. You might lose a pound or two in the sort term but you have no long term vision. This is not a sustainable way to eat, ever! Change your thinking - if you want to be at a healthy weight, you need a lifestyle change which means eating clean for life, not a few days or weeks.

Step 2 - eat several small, healthy meals throughout the day. Sorry, but the slimfast has to go! That is NOT any way to treat your body and is NOT healthy. Also, just because you had a salad - it wasn't healthy. That salad is loaded with fat and not the good kind. The chicken was fried and the dressing is the full fat version. A better salad option would be grilled chicken over mixed greens with some extra veggies in there (tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, etc) and balsamic vinaigrette dressing (or the like). If you like fruit, how about some clean french toast for breakfast? Use whole wheat bread, egg whites, fat free milk, some vanilla extract and cinnamon and top with fruit instead of syrup. Delish & good for you. Then for dinner you could have some grilled fish, chicken or lean steak with grilled veggies and brown rice. For snacks, an apple mid-morning and maybe some celery & natural peanut butter mid-afternoon. Breaking up your food intake this way will keep you full and speed up your metabolism the right way.

Step 3 - cut the sweets. The 2 brownies probably had more calories than what you burned in the hour you spent at the gym. You can still have brownies, but only once in a while (like maybe one, once a week), not 2 a day. There are ways to make reduced fat/calorie sweets that still taste great. Check out eatcleandiet.com for ideas.

Finally, drink LOTS of water! I know you probably hear this a lot, but cut any and all soda - including diet! The stuff is terrible for you! Make sure you are eating enough daily. Too few calories can be just as bad as too many because your body will go into starvation mode and hold on to every calorie it can. So try to eat at leas 4-5 times per day in smaller portions and EAT HEALTHY. You're probably best to avoid most fast food establishments, as they do not have your best interests in mind.

I view myself as being on a diet when I'm ready to cut some fat and it ALWAYS works.

I bulk up and build muscle, then cut off the fat by dieting.

This is a standard process that people have followed for a LONG time.

This idea that you need to embrace a lifestyle to lose weight is idiotic. You lose weight with a calorie deficit, and you can't stay in a calorie deficit for life. Indeed you shouldn't stay in a calorie deficit for more than a few months at most.
