Starting My Weight Loss Journey

Vote 1 Vote

I've heard that it's much easier to start a healthy lifestyle and exercise routine if you have people to support you - this is my way of doing that.

I started Monday (yes, very new), and I did an excercise video called "Zumba," which was amazingly fun and quite difficult, since I have let myself go. I also went swimming for about an hour.

The only thing that's difficult now is my eating habits. I like the feeling of working out, but it's the eating that has been a consistent problem all my life, and I am determined to break it. I see how much weight I've gained and I am way too young (22) to have body problems. I ate some Thai food for lunch yesterday - yogurt, and chicken strips with ranch from Denny's. The best choice? No. But I realized that.

This is the beginning of a journey of a lifetime. I want to not only lose weight, but learn about my body and how it reacts to things. I feel like I'm molding my body to be what it was supposed to be. Every time I work out I'm molding a little piece of fat off!

Any advice would be much appreciated!

  • Hey,
Thats a very good start. People who just start off with lifestyle goals always succeed in the field of fitness.I would just tell you about one common myth so that you can have a good outlook of diet. Fat is not your enemy but your friend... yes...
when god created food he knew what we need and hence created fats. Fats does not just accumulate under skin but they support all vital organs and also the essential fats help you keep your blood clean and stuffs. Then why big time diet gurus say to avoid fats??? Many feel that fats are hidden in most of the food that we eat and hence we dont need them. But however keeping a watch on how much essential fats you consume is ideal. Fat sources like deep sea fish, nuts, flax, olive etc are great sources. Just make sure that you eat a dish which contains one of these.

Fats also help you in maintaining an ideal hormone level.

one more thing - carbohydrate is fuel for you and eat good quantity of carbs only on active hours like breakfast and around workouts. in the other meals try to cut it by little

  • Congratulations on beginning your journey. Since you are so young, I would suggest learning about calories and portion sizes. It's not easy, but it will help you for a lifetime. Good luck.

  • You've made the decision to make a lifestyle change not just go on a 'diet'. Well done!

Now start a food diary today and record all the food and drink you consume and their calories. It will only take a bit of time each meal. You know your Thai lunch yesterday was not the best choice. Agreed! But, counting the calories will show you just how much calories was in it. Keeping a food diary will be a surprise at just how much food and how many calories you consume. Good luck!

The realization that your diet is indeed unhealthy is a very important first step. When I decided to lose weight for good, I first analyzed what I was eating and I realized I was making very poor choices most of the time. Look at where you can substitute healthy foods for the unhealthy things. Instead of chicken strips, get a grilled chicken sandwich and a side salad and don't eat the bun on the sandwich...you have a really yummy grilled chicken salad and it's much more satisfying. Keep up the exercising and just keep looking for ways you can save calories in your everyday food choices. If you incorporate changes slowly, you'll have a much easier time sticking with them long-term.

Congrats on your decision to make a change in your life at such a young age. I waited until I was a little bit older but it was well worth it. I lost more than what my goal was and I have learned exactly how to keep it off.

Your choice at Denny’s wasn’t the best however it wasn’t the worst. One of my favorite things to order at Denny’s is the chicken salad with low calorie dressing. If I remember correctly it is under 600 calories.

If you haven’t noticed a trend yet everyone is talking calories. Calories are a major player to losing the weight you want to lose.

You can make a list of foods you like and check out the calorie counts. I think my list was pretty long at first. Then I found a website which took care of all the counting for me. The program went well beyond my expectations.

I will tell you a quick story that I am very proud of. I had to go get a new drivers license a few months ago because I look so much younger now. I started to get carded again and I am 37 years old. Makes me happy! Good luck to you.

All i can say is well done for the decision :)
I did a similar thing nearly 2 months ago, changed everything about my lifestyle and decided to stick to it. Never felt better and the results are amazing now. I can tell you you are on the right path, try to keep it that way. As for the eating habits being a problem, it will kick in and change don't worry, it takes a bit of time. I personally didn't believe for a second i will do it, but as stubborn as i got, i managed to pull through. And sticking to it as i've been overweight my entire life (i'm same age as you) and i do not want to go back to what i was when i started my journey. wish you all the best and all success in the world. Cheers, Ann

Congratulations on beginning your weight loss journey. I lost more than 50 lbs 2 years ago and have kept it off, but portion control is still an issue for me, as it is for many people. Do as much research as you can to find a weight loss and exercise program that fits your needs and lifestyle. For instance, I worked with a health coach to create a wellness plan. Unlike a diet, a wellness plan is about more than counting calories and measuring inches. It focuses on the health of one's body, mind and spirit.

Also, try doing a Google search for "Portion Control" and you may be surprised by how much infomation is available. You can also order a portion control plate that will further help you in this effort.

    Good luck - Jeanine
