10 Tips for Losing Weight

Vote 3 Votes

When you wish to lose 1 pound you need to reduce your calorie intake by 500 calories at least.

Here is a guide to losing weight without going on an annoying diet:

1. When eating breakfast, eat a whole orange instead of a glass of orange juice - you'll be saving approximately 50 calories

2. Switch your regular milk to non-fat or low fat milk. Use sugar substitutes instead when drinking coffee or tea.

3. If you use lots of mayonnaise, change it to mustard. You can save 100 calories, and it also helps you to burn fat. Forget about the cheese, and save another 100 calories.

4. If you wonder in to a fast food restaurant, eat little fries and simple burgers instead and you'll be eating 500 - 600 calories less.

5. Don't eat potato chips. Eat fruits, eat an apple - it's much healthier, full of fiber, and has fewer calories.

6. Change your eating habits - rather than eating 3 or 4 times a day, start eating smaller meals every 2 or 3 hours. Don't skip breakfast, it is the most important meal of the day. Breakfast will help your metabolism to wake up and digest normally during the day.

7. Eat healthy snacks like dried fruits, nuts, veggies, yogurt and fresh fruits.

8. When going to a party or going out with friends, watch how much alcohol you drink. Alcohol has so-called empty calories which contribute to weight gain. When drinking, don't use coke or other products to fill your glass, use mineral water.

9. Restaurants have the reputation of serving huge meals. Eat those meals with a friend, or save some for another day. Another way to evade this is by not eating in restaurants so often.

10. Start moving. Go on long walks, you can do this when you want to talk to a friend, or go to a place that is close to your home. Try to find a type of exercise you enjoy. There surely is a sport or some physical activity you can do. This is a healthy way to help you in losing weight. Swimming is a very healthy sport. By swimming just about an hour, you can burn 500 calories, and it also tones your body beautifully.

You don't have to go on a serious and difficult diet to be able to lose pounds. The only thing you have to do is be more attentive to your current eating and exercising habits.

  • Who's to say that overweight people don't already do all of these things and more?

    • Thats not the point. They are just tips, ten to be exact. There may be 100 or more other tips. Maybe in those 100 or more other tips there are some you are not doing. Just tips.
Good for whoever is already doing them and keep it up! I'm impressed.

      • I think the little burger comment is not about the "new sliders" but about the regular size burger at a fast food joint. For instance, a hamburger kids meal is a perfect portion size if you want a burger.

  • The little burger thing can be deceiving - I planned to get the mini burgers when I went out to Chili's the other night and they turned out to have MORE calories than the light chicken sandwich I ended up getting.

  • Actually, it is 3500 calories of food for one pound, not 500. Maybe you intended to say if you wanted to lose 1 pound a week, then by cutting your calories by 500 each day, that would equal one pound of weight loss a week?

Additionally, you can lower your calorie consumption and add in exercise to further expedite your weight loss. I was curious to hear how much weight you have lost following your tips?

    1 - I don't drink juice at all
2 - I don't use sugar in my coffee at all. I use a little bit of whole milk, less than a tablespoon.
3 - Already use mustard instead of mayo
    4 - I don't eat fast food
    5 - No chips
6 - Breakfast is my biggest meal of the day
    7 - I do this already
8 - I drink wine; not a ton and not that often
9 - I don't eat out often for financial reasons
    10 - I work out 5 - 6 days a week.
I have noticed that I eat the same amount and sometimes less than some of my thin friends. Still I have a good 40 - 50 pounds to lose.
I gained this weight 5 years ago while recovering from minor surgery. It bothers me when people say it's easy, just follow these simple tips. Maybe this is true for people who eat garbage-y food but what about the rest of us?

  • Losing weight isn't hard. Losing weight the right way can be. Losing 1-2 lb a week max for 20 weeks isn't easy. This list is very vague but almost everything on it makes sense.

The only thing I disagree with is the spacing of small meals. Personal research along with studies have shown that eating 5-6 small meals throughout the day has a very minimal effect on metabolism.

    • Losing weight isn't hard??? who are you kidding!! It honestly takes 14 solid days of following tips 1-10 (especially the alcohol intake) before you will start seeing any kind of result. Losing weight takes so much more time than putting weight on, which can be very discouraging at times. Its hard to keep motivated but if you can just be good for those first two weeks the number will begin to decrease!

I am just ending week 1 of phase 1 of the SBD and I have lost 10 pounds so far. It's great! I was always eating sweets left and right and eating close to 5-6 bowls of cereal a day. Loved bread and all the other carb foods that people love to eat. The thing is I have changed my diet to a major extreme and have been following the SBD rules...well about 90% of the rules. Meaning...I still have been eating stuff with sugar in them (no more than 8g of sugar though) like bumble bee tuna and chicken salad in a can, lowfat yogurt with sugar, lowfat cottage cheese with sugar and even ice-cream bars with 0 carbs and 3g of sugar and I still have been losing weight. I'm sure if I totally cut sugar period it would be more. But I'm still satisfied with the SBD so far. Is this because of such an extreme change in my diet I was still able to lose this weight even though I didn't cut out ALL SUGAR? I still have cut out all carbs like bread, cereal, cookies, crackers and so on and so on. Has anyone else been successful with the SBD without completely cutting out ALL sugar completely?
