Today is my third day on the Grapefruit Diet and I've lost one pound so far! Hopefully I will be able to lose at least 10 pounds in 12 days.
I'm being very strict on this diet, and pray that things will turn out good for me. I will weigh myself again on June 20th, 12 days from my starting date.
Have any of you been on the Grapefruit Diet for over two months? How has this worked out for you? Please let me know your experiences.

I've never done the grapefruit diet, but it's unlikely to produce any real results because it is so radical, you can't maintain the change. I would think it's possible to avoid weight regain (aside from some water regain) so long as you don't just return to your original eating habits, but you could probably do more good through a less radical plan.
ReplyI agree. The best way to lose weight is to work on a program that you can live with long term. I hate to say it but you are going to lose weight & the minute you start eating normal again, the weight will come back on.
You need to start eating healthier & exercise. There are 3500 calories in a pound of weight so to lose 1 pound per week, create a calorie deficit of 500 calories per day by eating less & exercise to reach that 500 calories per day.
The quick fix you have described is a gimmick diet. Please try to do a healthy alternative not a fad diet that is not going to help you long term.
ReplyI appreciate your insight into avoiding fad diets! I have a question for you about your comment. When you said to create a deficit of 500 calories, what starting point do you use? I am obsessive about exercising and I eat pretty healthy too. If I run an average of 6 miles a day, swim approx. 1000 meters 5 days a week, and do ab work....what should my calorie intake be? I have found that when I add additional workout elements, I often gain a lb or 2. In your opinion is that normal? I am well within the normal range for BMI, but my weight is always something that I have monitored closely.
ReplyI agree with Katie.
This sort of highly restrictive fad diet has been shown to not work in the long term. Additionally, I'd be surprised if you maintain this sort of result over the long term - what you will be losing so quickly first up will be some fat but a lot of fluid.
It's probably not maintainable, meaning that you will soon revert to old habits. Whatyou need to do is to modify your diet so that you have a balanced and maintainable diet - where the occassional piece of pizza is not going to hurt, because 95% of the time you are eating healthy food.
ReplyThe ONLY old habit anyone has that can cause weight gain is eating more calories than your body needs.
Gaining (or losing) weight has absolutely nothing to do with the specific foods you are eating.
Some foods promote satiety so they help with calorie restriction, but that's about as far as it goes.
That said, this diet sounds like a silly gimmick.
ReplyHi MissCassie, congratulations on your decision to make changes to your diet and get to the size you want to be. Its a brave and wonderful step forward!
ReplyBut, please take on the advice from the other comments. A fad diet won't give you the results you want and deserve in the long term. There is no 'miracle' quick diet. Weight loss takes time.
I disagree with the negative comments about this diet. I've lost 60 pounds on it and have never felt better. There is a lot of anecdotal evidence regarding improvement of medical issues related to blood pressure and diabetes through use of this diet. My lab results are excellent, and I have both my traditional doctor's and my naturopath's blessing to use this diet. I think the thing to remember is there is no one size fits all diet plan that works for everybody - you have to find what works best for YOU. I wish you continued success!
ReplyThe improvements in blood work have nothing to do with the diet and everything to do with the weight lost.
ReplyWhich foods you eat and when you eat them can also affect your metabolism, which affects how many calories you burn doing any particular activity, which affects the calories in/calories out balance.
For instance, a study showed that when 3 sets of people at the exact same number of calories per day, but set 1 ate them all in the morning, set 2 ate them all at midday, and set 3 ate them all in the evening, Set 1 lost weight, Set 3 gained weight, and Set 2 stayed about the same.
ReplySorry, meant to reply to Barry's earlier comment!
ReplyI wonder why everyone assumes that a person who uses a fad diet will necessarily go back to their old eating habits. Sometimes, a drastic change to jump start weight loss and give a person motivation to make permanent dietary changes can be a good thing. If some fad diet makes someone lose 10 pounds in two weeks, and that is enough to help them make healthy food choices after that point, I don't see a problem. The bigger problem would be if someone tried to stay on a diet like this much longer than a couple of weeks.
ReplyI think it's similar to the reason that a lot of people seem to regain weight after being on something like Nutrisystem, Jenny Craig, or another packaged meal diet. You don't learn how to make changes that will stick.
ReplyThanks for all the comments. *Postive and Negative* Im just going to try what works for me, and honestly what im doing now is whats best. I just want really a jump start. I want to get in a habit of eating less and excersizing more. This diet has given me less hunger and more energized for some reason. I drink more water and eat less fried and fat. I be honest I wouldnt even call it a fad diet or diet in general because its not unhealthy cause im drink real fruit, water and salades with meat and meat period. I just want to slowing get into eating in little portions and not bing myself so much.
ReplyI have never tried it but fad diets are not the best diet to follow. There are safe ways to lose weight and keep it off. Sure in might take you a little longer but the weight won't come back when you are done.
ReplyABOUT 9 YEARS AGO, I DID THIS DIET AND LOST A LOT OF WEIGHT. IT IS A GOOD DIET BUT IT IS A DIET. YOU WILL HAVE TO CONTINUE EATING WELL AND EXERCISING TO KEEP THE WEIGHT OFF. THIS IS A NO CARB DIET. ONCE YOU BEGIN TO EAT CARBS AND JUNK FOOD THE WEIGHT WILL COME BACK ON. NO WORRIES, JUST GO BACK TO THE DIET AND START OVER. GOOD LUCK!!!!
ReplyGrape fruit diet will be very useful for the peoples who are so fat....... Yes I too tried for one week and I feel good improvement in my weight...
Replyit works. you WILL lose weight. it was hard sticking to it though after the 3rd day for me.
Replyi have done this diet in the past, as well as doing i now. it does work. as far as gaining weight back, it only happens if one goes back to over eating again.
Replyi know when i need to lose unwanted pounds i can do this diet, and get it off. yes, i gained weight, over time after doing the diet in the past. the gained weight came from over eating due to stress and depression, over a two year time period. if i maintained good eating habits, it would not have happened. trust me,the gained weight came from eating boxes of debbie cakes. the diet is not that low in carbs, because grapefruit has it. one will feel better because of leaving off foods like debbie cakes. more energy, etc. i have never done the diet long term. i did the diet last month, but did not follow the diet rules. it did get me used to it, and now i am following it,and the rules of it. i normally lose 3 pounds a week on it, instead of the 10 pounds that is told one will lose. i am happy about the 3 pounds a week.
I have tried this grapefruit diet. It helped me loose 35lbs. I followed the diet as recommended and it worked for me. I myself do not like to excerise but i knew it would benefit me to try and i started slowly. first with walking 30 minutes in the late afternoon or early morning what ever you perfer or what ever works better with your schedule then as the weight dropped i began to feel more engerized and began to walk in the moring and late afternoon. even if you have a sweet tooth you have the 2 days and i use it as reward days your stomach begans to not take in as much as it use to and you realize you consume less sweets also. I like to work out now and it begins to be a every day routine but with any thing you can fall off and eventually gain your original weight back but you realize how much better you felt physicaly when you were on the diet. I am now currently watching what i eat and not exactly following the same diet plan. I began to ween myself off and have more control on my intake of food. I am also thinking about going vegeterian. I can say this diet helped me jump start my weightloss.
ReplyHi, I want to start this diet but am a bit confused. Some sites say DONT EAT cucumbers, carrots, cabbage, peas, lettuce or tomatoes while other sites say YOU CAN. Can you please tell me which is correct? Thank you.
Replyi did the grapefruit PLAN bout 9 yrs ago. Other than the Akins, which is similar, its the only way I,ve ever lost weight.recently i looked online and see alot of ERRORS on the plan. Its like sabotging the dieter.Pls. eat only green veggies. No potatoes PERIOD,that incl. chips ,no white veggies either. And restrict coffee or tea because of caffiene affects blood sugar.Stick with meats, salads, with any lettuce, and grapefruit. Eat til full.Enjoy dressing(not low fat).I like carrots, but cant eat em!save all the foods you desire for the 2 days you're off.follow the true no carb, grapefrt.plan i promise u sucess.good luck!
ReplyHello everyone I started the grapefruit diet today, and I am very excited about getting this freaking weight off Im 5'4 and weigh 180 lbs today was hard I will keep everyone updated. And i figure this willbe my jumpstart then when its all done and finished I wil start eating healthy and give my self a 4 day a month treat. I am determined.
ReplyI tried this diet 5 yrs ago and lost 54 pounds in 3 mo. It does work and at the time it was the most successful of everything I've tried. I was 250 pounds and dropped to 196.
After I lost those unwanted pounds I maintained my weight for 3 yrs with low calorie diet and exercise, which is recommended for any weight control but if you are looking to loose I would say this is helpful.
I will admit I've gained 35 pounds but that has totally been due to a lack of eating correctly and lack of exercising but after I lost the weight I did not immediately gain the weight back this has been within the last year that I've gained.
I'm going on the diet again and would recommend it to someone else.
ReplyI am so tired of people say these diets wont work the will if you work hard at it just like everything else in life and just like any diet if you start to eat bad again you will gain its not just this diet its all diets so to say if you do the grapefruit diet and go off you will gain thats the case with any diet you go off my saying is go with works for you b the wa been on this diet 7 days today and I have lost almost 6 pounds and I am never hungry and full before I am even done my meal
