Fried Food for Thought, Garbage Forever!

The other day we had friends staying who arrived with two packets of food from Kentucky Fried Chicken.

What struck me (other than the fact that that stuff is greasy) though was just how much garbage it produced. Let's see...there was the bucket, there were the two tubs from the mashed potatoes, the two tubs from the gravy, the tub from the coleslaw etc... etc...

Normally hubby and I put out one half-filled black garbage bag a week. I cook from scratch every night and have a compost heap and wormbin which get all my food scraps, non-glossy marketing material we get goes to my compost heap, my husband's plastic water bottles get cut to make plant holders or covers for plants so we only put out our recycling bin once a month or so. What stuck me is just how much packaging processed food creates - wow!

Well, KFC is garbage food and bad for the environment. I haven't eaten it in years.

  • Uh, you can recycle the paper and plastic. The paper is biodegradable and made from recycled paper.

God you people are dumb and so self righteous.

But goodie for you for getting to feel better than your guests.

I use to think KFC was good because you could get a good tasting source of protein - their chicken. But it's tooo greasy or oily. And, I don't think that chicken meat is anything good considering how those chickens are raised. And anything else on their menu, except the coleslaw perhaps, is definitely a good way to get fat...fast!

Sure it's tasty, but far better to get protein through lean chicken breasts that you can buy frozen a lot cheaper then fresh.

Calling KFC's chicken a good source of protein is like calling Doritos a good source of fats. There are SO many better choices for lean protein in the world...eggs, grilled skinless chicken breasts, lean beef, skim milk, etc.

    • You're right, it's completely terrible how those chickens are raised and killed. For more you can go to KentuckyFriedCruelty.com.

  • I think KFC gets all their chicken from Tyson, and I heard a rumor that Tyson only buys chickens that are already dead. There's nothing like eating meat that may have been dead for days before processing :)

Does anyone know if there is any truth to this?

    • I actually know someone who raises chickens for tyson, they are kept on his farm and tyson brings in the feed. He couldn't even tell you what's in it. I haven't heard anything else though.

Yet another reason that I don't eat a lot of fast food. Most of the food I eat doesn't come in a lot of packaging...lots of fruits, veggies, eggs, brown rice, etc. Part of why I don't buy those 100-calorie packs is because it does seem so wasteful, packaging-wise. Why not just buy a big pack of snacks and divide it up into reusable Tupperware containers?

BTW, I hate KFC. The entire menu is nothing but calorie bombs...everything is deep fried or smothered in gravy and mayonnaise. It just doesn't really appeal to the way I eat now. I still can't believe I used to actually like that food when I was heavier.

Also one can help the environment buy shopping with canvas bags instead of plastic grocery bags. I do that for some of my shopping and I'm no tree-hugger.

I have a nice array of canvas tote bags that I bring to the store with me. I shop at Aldi, where they charge you a nickel for the bags, so I always bring my own. Saves money and the environment, plus they don't rip or tear when you put heavier things in them.

  • Fast food is exactly what we want to avoid, for just so many reasons. Fast is the opposite of slow, methodical, conscientious and mindfulness. If you eat fast food you are taking your car somewhere, grabbing "food" from the drive-through, gobbling it down and creating waste with all the packaging and not to mention increasing your carbon footprint. That kind of food also wreaks havok on your body, but that goes without saying. Taking a walk to your local produce store and buying whole (organic) food, just enough for one meal, coming home and slowly cutting your vegetables and preparing your meal and composting your waste will be an exercise in mindfulness, healthy for your mind and your body. Unfortunately, in this time and age in society, we value fast fast fast. But fast fast fast is harming our bodies and our environment.

Or, get a Costco membership. Load up on all kinds of produce they sell once a week. Then exercise regularly by going for walks. It's not all or nothing. Not everyone has as wonderful produce store in reasonable walking range.

  • Barry, not a very nice comment!!!! Yes we all know that those containers can be recycled. But it really all depends on your life style. If you are not used to all the garbage, it will make you stop and think "what do I do with all this" Don't just assume that people are stupid. Because we all know what assume means...or do you Barry??? I too stay away from KFC, that stuff will kill you, clog your arteries and shorten your life span. Now in saying that I am not a fit and trim person. I need to lose weight too and I am doing so in eating lots of fruits and veggies, walking every night and staying away from anything processed. It is working so far and I am really feeling much better. There is so much I could still learn and would love anyone diet stories.

It's interesting because I phoned the local KFC and no-one there knew that their containers could be recycled either. So, at least I wasn't the only dummy who didn't know this. It sure doesn't say anything about it being recyclable on any of the packaging (KFC really are missing out on an opportunity to let consumers know that - we aren't all recycling savvy as I have just so aptly illustrated) However, on the up side, Barry, at least I gave you an opportunity to enjoy feeling better than dumb old me :) Actually I merely wanted to share this observation as a commentry on how much extra packaging there is that comes along with food processing.

  • Yes , and have you noticed the garbage on the side of the road is always from McDonalds, Dunkin Donuts or another Fast Food Chain. You never see a vegan cookie wrapper on the ground or a bag from apples. Its always the most convenient SHIT leaving a big mess.

I think in all cases, no matter what our anti-global warming expert thinks, it's better to not use in the first place than to have to reuse or recycle. I take my bike and panniers or backpack to the store, reuse plastic bags until they're only good for dog duty, even buy bulk into my own containers. I can't understand for the life of me why people can't/won't buy coffee in their own coffee cup. Even at work, people won't use a mug, using a new cup every time, sometimes a few a day. I don't get it.

I don't get takeout either, because of the trash, and also it tends to be crap food.
