pamela on Gluten-Free Diets: Latest Fad? - October 13 10:43AM

Could be your blood-type, A or B? that you can tolerate grains. Other causes of arthritis flareups can be other foods...Nightshade foods too?

pamela on Gluten-Free Diets: Latest Fad? - October 13 10:39AM

you are cleaning out your bowels by not being constipated...caused by the gluten-products. I suggest doing a colon cleanse to clean out your system.

pamela on Gluten-Free Diets: Latest Fad? - October 13 10:35AM

I agree with Deborah...this information is completely false in regards to only Celiac patients need to be on a gluten-free diet. I am gluten-sensitive and it was proven through blood test, though I do NOT have Celiac disease...if I eat gluten containing foods I get similar symptoms, but not the damage that is caused to those with Celiac. I don't know how anyone can lose weight by eating gluten-free foods...they actually make me gain weight and the reason is that gluten-free foods have to be higher in fat content. So gluten-free foods are both high in carb and high in fat and NOT diet-friendly.

What changed?
2002- 1 hour a day
2008- 2.5 hours a week

We must be too fit.

cereal on New Exercise Guidelines: What's Changed? - October 13 10:01AM

I can't believe I didn't catch this earlier, but two and a half hours of exercise a week doesn't equal thirty minutes a day , it would be just over twenty minutes a day ; unless your week only has five days.

Jough Dempsey on New Exercise Guidelines: What's Changed? - October 13 9:53AM

Even if you're swamped at work (as I am) it's pretty easy to find 30 minutes of exercise of some kind per day, but it's hard to get your heart rate up for 20-30 minutes a day sometimes.

Climbing the stairs instead of taking the elevator, using the printer that's farther away from your desk, taking a walk at lunch, all of these things add some activity to your day, but they don't really get your heart rate up necessarily (or if they did, you wouldn't want them to while you're dressed for work). Okay, climbing the stairs probably would, but can you sustain that for 30 minutes?

I'm trying to add more incidental activity into my day, but I'm not really counting that as my "exercise" for the day since it doesn't help you get a little out of breath. For me there's no substitute to working out at the gym (or going for a brisk walk).

Carol on Leptin Diet - October 13 9:14AM

Amazing. Have gradually lost 8 pounds in two months, and have never felt better. The higher protein at meals has been key, as well as cutting way down on sugar. That said, if I go out to eat with friends, I eat as much as and whatever I want, and simply resume the regular pattern later. It's very simple, no counting calories, thinking about food constantly, etc.

Analytical on Splenda Side Effects Under Scrutiny - October 13 8:31AM

I am reading the comments here and and there are ones that are understandable, then there are the ones that are flat out ignorant. Not everyone can tolerate certain foods or food products. I am diabetic and I can tolerate most artificial sweetners, but yes, splenda does aggravate my system. That does not necessarily mean splenda is a bad product, it just could mean my it does not blend well with my system. Everyone should be alert to their bodies and what they can and cannot tolerate when eating food or non food products. What I cannot tolerate is the ignorant comments degrading people because they are having side effects from this product. Just because someone cannot use it does not make them a hypocondriac, nor does it make them mental, etc. I will say this, the FDA does not test products as thoroughly as they used to and due to this process we are ultimately the testing for a lot of them. I understand this is due to protocol changing, but it is also causing medications being recalled at an alarming rate after people have problems, food products being recalled, etc. My suggestion to you and to others is, be aware of what you use and injest. If you have proplems, then stop using it. Just because it works for someone, does not necessarily mean it works for you. If you are diabetic, use your head and talk with your health care providers. Do your homework, there are alternatives you can use in your diets. Adjust, stop being a lemming and teach yourselves what is good for you. And for all of the critics out there, look in a mirror and be greatful you do not have to deal with a condition you have to watch on a daily basis.

sam on Brown Seaweed Reduces Abdominal Fat - October 13 8:26AM

at the start of Sept 2008 i weighed 300lbs. i started eating a more macrobiotic/japanese diet and noticed results immediately. I eat a plum or nectarine for breakfast, drink a couple of cups of unsweatened green tea. i take a large thermos of homemade miso soup to work and consume it over the day with more green tea. in the soup i have organic miso paste, lots of arame and wakame seaweed with a little kelp. Some tofu and perhaps some dried shitake shrooms. for dinner, if i am hungry i will have stir fried soba noodles or shortgrain brown rice with mixed veggies such as carrot, squashes, mushroom, green onion and diakon.

today is october 13 and i now weigh 269lbs. i feel great!
i am hoping to be 240 lbs by end of year and eventually 200 - 220 lbs. i have a large frame that doesnt look healthy if i go much lower than 220.

Cari on Overcoming Toxic Hunger: A Major Cause of Obesity - October 13 7:53AM

Well I did find ONE thing I agreed with in this article - and that's that most of us don't get to a point of feeling hunger. As for in the throat???? And the idea of toxic hunger - well let's just say It would be interesting to see evidence of this....

I think it is of the utmost importance for people to understand that weight gain is something that can be overcome even if everyone in your family has yet to defeat it.

John Sifferman - Real World Strength Training on New Exercise Guidelines: What's Changed? - October 13 6:20AM

I think it's a sad truth that exercise guidelines are necessary here in the U.S. We've gotten ourselves so far from what physical culture should be, that we actually need time duration recommendations and the like.

Many children get plenty of physical activity, others do not. However, I think that kids, in general, have a better grasp of physical culture than most adults. Hence, the recommendation that kids should get 1 hour of moderate to high intensity activity daily makes sense to me. Why is this not the standard for adults - do we really need less activity?

I think part of the solution is getting away from the mentality that exercise is necessary instead of desired, and that it's brutal hard work instead of an energy booster. Exercise doesn't have to be extremely difficult and leave you exhausted for it to be effective and beneficial.

I think that when adults start playing (do you remember what that was like?) instead of exercising - they forget that exercise takes work and they remember that it's fun to move around - it's fun to be active. I think that's part of the solution, anyways.

Sincerely,
John Sifferman NSCA-CPT

Never teh Bride on New Exercise Guidelines: What's Changed? - October 13 6:19AM

Maybe adults would get more exercise if they were playing tug-of-war and skipping instead of doing dull reps at the gym. I try to make fitness fun in my own life, even though I'm old enough to be considered a grownup!

there's no doubt about it for me... when I put my trance music on I train far harder and longer in the gym. Binary Finary always does the trick!

>>>A maximum amount of hours per week, and reminders that rest is needed for the body to repair would have been nice.

That's a really good point cereal. So many people go to the gym and do too much in one go thinking they will get more results, then won't go again for a month or so! Less is often more when it comes to exercise. People need to remember the main principle of a good exercise regime - sustainability.

E.L. on New Exercise Guidelines: What's Changed? - October 13 5:59AM

I agree with you, for the beginner, these guidelines are OK. But don't you think it's a pretty sad state of affairs when we have to beg people to get their butts off the couch and do something, anything? I think we need to get our messages aligned. Too often, the mass media will report on studies in a way that perpetuates various myths about nutrition and exercise. Companies continually look for ways to market their products as healthy even though they aren't. Sure, licorice is a "naturally fat-free" food, but that sure as heck doesn't make it healthy. We need to send a clear, accurate message that being healthy isn't complicated. Eat mostly whole foods, avoid processed foods, and be active daily. If you can do that every day, then you're well on your way to being healthy. Without a concerted effort, this country will only get fatter and fatter.

cereal on Presidential Foods - October 13 4:16AM

I like the sound of both ice creams, but I think I lean more toward the Straight Talk Crunch ;Whirl of Change seems a little to nutty for me.

Both of the Burgers look good ,even though ones a hot dog, but at $12.99 per Burger there way too expensive for what they are.

cereal on New Exercise Guidelines: What's Changed? - October 13 4:05AM

The guidelines are fine. I'm sure some people will nit pick them too death for not being what they wanted, but when you put this in the context of your target audience being the entire American population you have to have a pretty broad amateur level scope to your message.

The only thing I would like to see added is over training some people take there exercise too far and do more damage too there bodies than good. A maximum amount of hours per week, and reminders that rest is needed for the body to repair would have been nice.

Will people buy in, some will some want ,it's the same old story.

Splenda was not discovered while trying to make an insecticide; do some research yourself and stop spreading FUD.

Veronica on Splenda Side Effects Under Scrutiny - October 13 12:03AM

Hi I am having the same exact problem!
I think that the splenda is a affecting the immune system and triggering it so as to cause itching and hair loss. I plan to get my doctor to prescribe me a drug that will calm my immune system down a bit (there is a drug - I forget the name- that will make your hair grow like crazy. It is used for post op surgical patients to keep their immune system from rejecting transplants and such.) and cause the hair to grow back. I have thinning but I also have hair loss at the front as you described. Some nights I itch so bad that I have to take an allergy pill or there is no way I would sleep!
Everything I eat that would normally have sugar has splenda!...My jelly, popsicles ice cream- everything! even the syrup I use. SO based on what I am reading here I have to conclude that this is the cause... I will discontinue use immediately. too many post all over the net for this to not be true!

Jakes on Are Muscular Men More Attractive? - October 12 9:18PM

This is so true...I'm very slender myself...i work out and try to eat. However my genes and metabolism fight me on a daily basis. Women want us to feel like they are under so much pressure to look and feel good...what about us? I didnt choose to be this skinny. Sometimes thay are very shallow. If i became more muscular, i know that some of the girls who avoid me now, would want to hang out with me more!!!

Vix on Splenda Side Effects Under Scrutiny - October 12 6:26PM

I used splenda for 3 years, just only in the past year or so have I been experiencing problems. It contains chlorine people!! They discovered this product while trying to make an insecticide, please do the research, we are human science experiments!!!

Vix on Splenda Side Effects Under Scrutiny - October 12 6:23PM

NO, be glad you found out so soon!! I have been using it for 3 three years and have had every single one of the side effects mentioned. Never thought it was a little yellow pack of poison. Encourage your mother to stop using it.

ddwalter on Underweight or Slightly Overweight: Which is Worse? - October 12 6:10PM

I agree that being underweight is more dangerous if only for the fact that it is so embraced that it can go unnoticed or even praised until there are serious complications. However, I think that if you are on the lower end of the scale to get a water test done to find out if you are indeed under weight. My BMI is 17.5 by way of stander test/ scales but I'm only 4'11" tall, small framed and I weighed at my heaviest 103 w/clothes (and Sweater no shoes though) so probably more like 97-99lbs. That doctors scale pretty much said I was dying w/ 90lbs of non-fat mass but it was intended to measure regular height medium build people. It said I needed to gain 24 lbs of fat! It really scared me; thus I went to a different doc and he said I'm just small frame and lean and I'm of average weight for my height which can be from 90-130 lbs and my BMI is 19 I think I'd be pretty plump at 130 lbs. but I guess if I get pregnant I'd get that weight and then shrink again to something more like 110-115.

Herbalife on Herbalife: What's The Deal? - October 12 4:16PM

I have an idea to get rid of the product. Get to work! I say this without any sarcasm and understand it comes from a place of sincerity. The problem isn't that you feel there was no support in the business. The problem begins when you blame outside situations for your failure to succeed. This applies to any business. Until you take responsibility for your own success, it doesn't matter whether it's Herbalife, Monavie, or any other Direct Sales business opportunity. If you don't have a strong mentor, become the mentor yourself. Develop a marketing plan then get to work and take massive action. Succeed despite what's going on around you. That's the quality of a true leader. Good luck.

If you want what has to be the worlds worst junk food invention you have to come to Scotland for the Deep Fried Mars Bar (a UK Mars Bar is similar to a US Milky Way)... Made in a traditional greasy Scottish Chip Shop: The bar is covered in batter and deep fried til crispy. eurgh, I can feel my arteries harden just thinking about it.
