Watching TV Increases Your Risk of Early Death

As if NBC's Jay Leno/Conan O'Brien fiasco wasn't enough to get you to turn off your TV for a while, a new study finds that watching TV increases your risk of early death.

Couch potatoes beware, every hour spent watching TV daily increases your risk of dying from heart disease by 18 percent. Spend an average of four or more hours a day in front of the tube? You could be upping your risk by a whopping 80 percent.

Running: Not So Bad For Knees After-all

It seems almost counterintuitive that running wouldn't eventually lead to some form of joint injury or degeneration. Some key recent studies however, suggest that runners are at no greater risk of knee injury than non-runners.

The conventional wisdom of running equals bad knees actually had some scientific validation in the form of a 1999 study, showing that women who actively participated in heavy physical sports as teenagers had higher-than-average risk of developing hip osteoarthritis.

Top 10 Health Trends of the Decade

I admit it, I love top 10 lists! And, as this decade draws to a close, I especially love top 10's of the decade.

The 2000's certainly had a nice blend of the progressive, the questionable and of course the utterly ridiculous. The 2000's could be defined as the decade where we waffled over carbs, incorporated technology and took exercise and dieting to new extremes.

So, here are the trends and a brief commentary on each one:

Poll: Video Game Exercise and Our Children

The folks at Nintendo really came up with a marketing genius when they developed Wii with all its exercise based games.

They've basically given overweight people an excuse to spend more hours in front of the TV screen in the name of exercise. Now with the FXB (Fun Xercise Bike) overweight children can ride through a virtual world of fitness.

While there is no clear definition of what constitutes "unsafe" weight loss, it's probably fair to say that "The Biggest Loser" flirts with that blurry line at the best of times.
