It's the "Exercise Freaks" Causing Healthcare Strain!

Exercise has been taking a beating in the media over the past couple of years. Pop diet book gurus and other "experts" vying for edgy, publicity-grabbing attention are telling us that exercise is useless for fat loss. At least everybody agrees that exercise is "good for us". Well, almost everybody...

Rush Limbaugh, the acerbic right-wing radio personality, proclaims that it is the "exercisers" who are responsible for escalating health care costs. Here's what Rush had to say:

Strength Training: Could It Have Saved MJ?

As I type this, not even 24 hours has passed since the legendary artist succumbed to cardiac arrest. In the wake of this tragedy, I can't help but think about Michael Jackson in his recent years. And, while I can't comment on the extent of his medical conditions - his prescription drug and supplement use, and the all-too-obvious psychological "not-rightness" - I remain shaken by his frailty.

Jackson's emaciated frame - absent of any noticeable muscle, could very well have been culpable in his early demise.

Dogs: Man's Best Fitness Friend

You can look far and wide, but you won't find a more enthusiastic walking buddy than man's best friend: your dog. In our house, it's not even smart to say the word "walk" before you've laced up your shoes.

A handful of studies have tried to measure what dog lovers have known all along -- dogs like to walk, and people who have dogs like to make their dogs happy:

Asthma: The Benefits of Yoga and Other Exercises

Until recently, the link between yoga and improved asthma was anecdotal, but unproven.

But, a recent study out of New York University School of Medicine/Bellevue Medical Center has made a pretty good case. Researchers there found that asthmatics who practised Hatha yoga regularly (or three times a week) for ten weeks reported a significant improvement in asthma symptoms and quality of life, and some were even able to reduce their controller medications.

There are two theories as to why this works. One is that as asthmatics are trained to be more aware of their breath, they recognize and treat symptoms earlier. The other is that deep breathing done during yoga trains the lungs, making them stronger and more functional.

Exercise Stress Test: Measure of Fitness and Mortality Risk

A 10-minute walking stress test can give important information about health risks to those middle aged and older. The test measures cardiorespiratory fitness, or how well the lungs, heart, and blood vessels work together.

Preventative medicine expert Dr Timothy Church, recently told CNN, "Fitness is just simply as powerful a risk factor as there is." I think that's a pretty bold statement, and one we would do well to pay attention to.

Shake Off Your Weight With a Vibration Plate Machine

Obesity Panacea
You've seen the old school cartoons with some big fat bald guy strapped to a contraption and gyrating his way to thinness.

We're no better now, with our electric pro-wrestling-sized abdominal workout belts.
Editor's note: Whole Body Vibration Training does not use belts of any kind and should not be equated with those old "Fat Jiggling Machines".

But check this out. Researchers claim vibration plate exercise machines promote weight-loss, especially harmful belly fat.
