Movie Review: Bigger, Stronger, Faster

I know, I know, the movie has been out for a year now, but Food Inc. strangely haven't opened here yet, and I'm in the mood for a movie review!

I'll never forget being an anxious 12 year old watching the '88 Olympics - the marquee event - the 100 meter dash. I cheered loudly as Ben Johnson blazed to a new world record. I also remember the shear disappointment of what ensued.

Fashion Writer: Malnourished Women Are Out...

Is there a change in the air? From UK's The Times:

Malnourished women aren't interesting any more. They're depressing. And the six-pack, once evidence of having luxurious amounts of time and money to devote to self-sculpture, now looks like a feeble attempt at control in an uncertain world. Even worse, it implies a desperately high level of self-involvement. Fat people, meanwhile, look better every day. Why? Because they look carefree. So heave a sigh of relief and let your gut out.

Hugh Jackman's Wolverine Workout

I feel comfortable enough to say this: Hugh Jackman looks good... real good. He hovers only slightly below "man-crush" status in my books. The 6'3" star of the latest X-Men installment has garnered a lot of attention for his formidable physique. Turns out he worked pretty hard to achieve it - here's how he did it.

Conquering Emotional Eating: Lessons from Monica Seles

Monica Seles is without a doubt one of the best female tennis players of all time. Known for her relentless power and loud, multi-syllable grunts, Seles vaulted to the top ranked spot in women's tennis at the tender age of 17.

Even the casual sports fan knows how this story unfolds. A bizarre stabbing attack by a deranged fan would indelibly de-rail Seles' playing career and worse still, her emotional stability. The stabbing incident - compounded by the death of her father to cancer would spark an addiction to food.

Here are some quotes from Monica's story in an ESPN interview on how she kicked emotional eating. Seles has written a book on her experiences called "Getting a Grip".

Gwyneth Paltrow: Dumbest Diet Advice Ever?

I've become somewhat unfazed about what celebrities eat, how they workout and how they get back to their size 1 jeans 3 weeks after giving birth. There is one name, though that appears to have become synonymous with stupid dietary, exercise and alternative practices. Ladies and gentlemen, Gwyneth Paltrow. (Warning, extreme "catty-ness" ahead)

Oprah's Weight Gain

The latest issue of Oprah Winfrey's O magazine is all about her recent weight gain. Oprah laments her 40 pound weight gain over the last few years - that sees her current weight at over 200 pounds. She blames an out of control schedule with food as comfort.

Oprah has devoted a large portion of her air time to the subject of health and weight loss. She's tried various techniques, endorsed diets, books, and programs that went on to sell in the millions.

What's a viewing audience to do? Feel bemused, disappointed, annoyed, sympathetic? Or reach for another packet of Oreo's and change the channel?

Gillian McKeith - Guru or Fraud?

Gillian McKeith is probably the best-known "nutritionist" in the UK. She has a popular TV show, "You Are What You Eat", along with a magazine and associated product range.

She's very popular - but she's also come in for a lot of criticism, mostly about her use of the title "doctor", and some of her scientific claims. Should you be taking advice from this woman?
