Listening to Podcasts Can Help You Lose Weight
Some experts believe tuning into podcasts that give advice on diet and exercise help people lose weight, but only certain kinds.
Boring health lectures are a good start, but informative and "entertaining" soap-opera-like podcasts stick with you, and offer better results.
I guess it's like those tapes that teach you another language while you sleep. "Miguel buys fish at la pescaria."
Writing in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, researchers found overweight and obese men and women listening to weight-loss podcasts, 15 to 20 minutes long, for 12 weeks, lost six pounds.
But men and women listening to entertaining or "enhanced" podcasts lost weight, plus it encouraged them to eat more fruits and vegetables, do more exercise, and gave them "greater satisfaction" with the weight-loss intervention.
Have you tried any of these? I see a lot of people at the gym with MP3 players strapped to their arms, now I wonder what they're listening to.
Via Reuters.

If you invade my mp3 player, you'll probably get your as$ beat, but in the process you'll find podcasts, interviews and mp3 rips of seminars from people such as:
Tony Robbins, Donald Trump, Eben Pagen etc.
Why? Surrounding yourself with success usually leads to success. There is no question that this works.
ReplyI don't own an MP3.. just have a little iPod shuffle so all I get is music but I do fine. I have the mental stuff down to get me thru the exercise! Plus FJ always bugs me too!
ReplyI found that listening to weight loss podcasts help keeps me focused on my weight loss goals. It gets very easy to lose site of the goal when you're tempted by not so good for you food. I think it puts you in the right mindset.
ReplyI've never downloaded any podcasts to my MP3 player, but I can see how it would be helpful to getting yourself in the right mindset for working out.
ReplyDoes anyone have any recommendations? I listen to several podcasts, but they tend to be of a more professional or spiritual nature than directly health and fitness related.
ReplyThese are some of the ones on my ipod:

Two Fit Chicks and a microphone

My favs are
Biggest Loser Fan podcast
Two Fit Chicks and a microphone and

Jillian Micheals used to do a radio show that was published as a podcast but She went on hiatus this summer and I'm unsure if she'll be coming back since she has that new tv show in addition to the biggest loser. Her radio show was very very good, and totally unlike the biggest loser. I wish you could still d/l them.
ReplyHey Folks,
My name is Dr. Ray Hinish; I co-host a podcast with Blythe Alberg, a fitness competitor and fat loss expert. The podcast is called Cut the Fat Podcast and it can be downloaded from iTunes. We try to bring cutting-edge information around weight loss. We would love for you all to listen to them and give us feedback. We take feedback very seriously.
Thanks!

It makes sense that podcasts, or any interesting audio would help people drop fat. But I don't think it's as much about the content, as about the fact that the more you surround yourself with the right ideas, people, books, tapes, etc, the more it filters in and changes your own belief system, as well as builds your confidence in yourself to achieving certain goals.
I've heard it said that you're the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with - if you're not surrounded by people who build you up, motivate and support you in your weight loss goal, then it's certainly a great idea to surround yourself with audios/blogs/books that do it for you - these can act as people if it's where you choose to take your influences from.
ReplyThe beauty of listening to podcasts (it doesn't matter what they are) on your mp3 player is that it allows you to do other things at the same time, eg workout in the gym, brisk walking, forest walking, hill walking. I think it's what you do when you're listening that's important.
ReplyThat's very interesting about the weight loss. I'm actually the subject for a weight loss podcast. A couple of years ago Jimmy Moore interviewed me for one of his Livin La Vida Low Carb podcast shows. The topic of the show was the Zone Diet and my 100 pound weight loss.
ReplyThis makes sense to me. Lectures and classes that captivate you and keep your attention are much more stimulating and I would think that would help retain the information better. The classes at Structure House, where I work, use videos and the internet to bring in more interaction and to make sure their topics stay relevant to what people want to know about losing weight and keeping it off.
ReplyI usually listen to Michael Medved pod casts while doing cardio.
ReplyI listen to the Fitcast podcasts...they rock!
