New Reality Weight Loss Show: Obese
Anyone who's asked my opinion about "The Biggest Loser" (and also those who haven't) knows that I have more than a few misgivings about it. So when I heard that ABC was going to launch a "reality weight loss" show, I was immediately skeptical - until I read about the premise...
Shockingly, I think this show - simply called "Obese" (working title) may actually be interesting and (here's the kicker) REALISTIC.
Here's the idea...
A year in the life of somebody who has lost weight....scaled down to 1 hour. And not just some weight, a boatload of weight - hundreds of pounds if you can believe it.
According to executive producer J.D. Roth, the new show's format will take away the competitive aspect and instead focus on truly improving the individual's life. Wow - can I get an "Amen"?
Take notes Jillian and Bob!
Roth goes on to say;
This is a unique story that hasn't been told yet - there's something great and transformative when you take the game element out of it and just focus on one man or woman over the course of a year and there's no prize at the end. The finish is their entry into the life they've always wanted."
I heart J.D. Roth...
Seriously though - this is EXACTLY what The Biggest Loser is missing and ironically the most important message for the audience at large.
How will it be received?
I for one am curious as to the methods used to bring about such drastic changes from one individual to the next (I'm assuming they have a different individual and varying interventions from week-to-week).
I truly think this could be the one reality show that's actually grounded in reality. People need to see that major transformations take full calendar years.
In terms of popularity? I don't think it will have the edginess or glitter of "The Biggest Loser" and alas will not get the same kind of following.
In any case if you are as excited as I am, you'll have to wait until late next year for it.

There is already a show that's kind of like this on the Lifetime network. It's called Diet Tribe, and each season they follow a group of women friends as they try to lose weight. I think it's pretty good, as they have a personal trainer and a psychologist work with them. It's only for 120 days, and there's no actual contest involved, and they're only trying to lose a pound or two a week. I think they're in their second season.
ReplyI've seen DietTribe and I like it a lot better than TBL because it's not a crazy-insane program that doesn't look do-able. I'd watch this new show, though...it sounds pretty interesting. Coming from a background of being obese, I remember there being "prizes" along the way when I was losing weight...like the day I realized I could fit into size 8 jeans for the first time or the day that I actually ran one mile non-stop for the first time in my whole life. Those moments were what made me want to continue on my weight-loss journey for the long-haul.
ReplyI would watch it.. I have not heard about it BUT I love inspirational stories & love to see all aspects of it.
ReplyActually Jillian's getting her own show:

>> Uhh I'm sorry but if you think Jillian and Bob aren't changing lives for now AND the future you're a complete id*ot. No question about it.
Not only are they changing lives but they're teaching them mental toughness and incurring habits that will most likely stay with the "weight losers" for the rest of their LIFE. If anything people should be taking notes from them.
Taking out the competitive nature of a show? Pfft *yawn*. I hope this doesn't bore me to death.
ReplyFJ--have you seen any of the follow-up on the people that were on TBL? Sure, some of them maintain their weight loss, but I'm guessing close to half of them have either gained back all the lost weight or close to it. The way they approach weight loss on the show is sort of unrealistic in the real world, so maybe the contestants on the show just can't handle eating properly and working out in the real world.
ReplyYou're a douche bag.
ReplyMan, when BARRY is calling you a douchebag, you know you've got a problem. Time to re-evaluate things.
ReplySorry, there's no need for me to call names but seriously man. You need to get some perspective. You're way to hung up on physical beauty. What are you going to do one day when you're old and arthritic and need a nurse to bathe and feed you?
ReplyI don't think you can truly take away the competitive aspect of tv. Maybe the people on this show won't be directly competing with other dieters, but do you really think someone who doesn't lose all that much weight in a year will be featured on the show? The people they put on the air will have to have lost significant amounts of weight for it to be interesting ... it's just different competition.
ReplySounds like a great idea and hopefully it's more realistic! Obviously, there won't be as much drama involved so not as many people will watch it, but if they show realistic ways of losing weight I think it's a great idea to spread true knowledge about healthy weight loss.
ReplyThe only reality program I would watch is one where people don't get voted off. They get killed. Yes. One person at the end of each episode is killed. Think about it.
