90 Calorie Coke: Will it Shrink You?
Here's a clever idea. If drinking too much soda is bad for you, don't drink less of it, drink LESS of it.
Confused? Me too. But the bigwigs at Coca-Cola figure reducing the size of Coke cans to a "90 calorie mini can" is a slam-dunk to fight obesity.
Just like fun-size candy bars are! Here's the gist of it, sucking down a 90 ounce can keeps your calories down, but still lets you get your fix.
The soda industry took a hit after the American Heart Association came out with it's recommendations for sugar consumption, saying that just one 12 ounce can of regular soda puts women over the daily limit for sugar.
So drinking the teeny-tiny cans helps slash your sugar intake, without giving up soda, and keeps you out of back alleys looking for Coke dealers.
Brands of soda shrunken down include Coca-Cola, Sprite, Fanta Orange, Cherry Coca-Cola, and Barq's Root Beer.
And in the United States and Mexico, Coca-Cola has already started posting calories on the front of drinks, and hopes to do this globally by the end of 2011.
I don't drink soda, so don't ask me, but will you buy the smaller cans?
Via Beverage Daily.
My local grocery store carries smaller 8-oz. cans right now, and I buy them. I can't help it, I love my caffeine (and I don't drink coffee), so it's just enough to give me a small hit every day without going overboard. I usually have it with lunch, then drink water the rest of the day. I buy the Diet Coke, but if I wanted "real" Coke, I'd buy the smaller ones without hesitation, then just count the 90 calories as part of my Weight Watcher points.
ReplyI seldom drink soda but I like the idea of a smaller can. I can't drink a full 12 oz can, so currently if I want a soda, I buy one, take a few sips, and throw the rest out, which just feels wasteful!
Hard to call it a mini-can though when that's what a reasonable serving used to be!
ReplyDrinking a smaller can is like taking a smaller dose of poison. That stuff is awful! Anybody here ever do that science experiment where they left a human tooth in a cup of Coke overnight, and the next day it was partially melted and looked cancerous? And the fact that people can use Coca Cola to clean car engines...? YUCK. Dude, forget soda. Get yourself a healthy shake instead!
ReplyHyperbolic? Just a little. You can also use lemons or oranges to clean car engines, but I don't see anybody throwing a fit about that.

That whole "Cola eats teeth overnight" thing has been thoroughly debunked. Do your research before you start spouting off there, cowboy.
ReplyI drink maybe 12oz of coke in a whole year, so NO I will not be buying mini-cans or regular cans of ANY pop.
ReplyI don't drink soda so.... but 90 calories times as many as some people drink still adds up to useless calories. Beverages like soda & highly sweetened drinks are still at the top of the list for reasons why people gain weight & don't lose it if they keep downing empty calories. Hey, nothing wrong with one here & there but when it becomes a lot....
ReplyAm I missing something here? Coke ALREADY makes 100-calorie 8 ounce cans; so now they want to make 90-calorie 7.5 ounce cans? Isn't that a bit like reinventing the wheel? They must be planning to get rid of the 100-calorie cans or something. Still, I don't drink soda with calories in it, so I wouldn't buy it.
ReplyAb.so.lu.tely. Ridiculous. If anyone buys thinking they're doing something healthy for themselves, he/she must be barking mad.
ReplyI consume up to 5 Cokes a day, so no, I don't plan on buying these mickey mouse cans, also I'm 6'2 and weigh 139. I don't really understand this retarded "Calorie" thing, when I can consume like 10,000 "calories" everyday and not gain weight, and be underweight for my height.
ReplyGreat, you aren't overweight but that much sugar (approx 140 extra GRAMS OF SUGAR) everyday in your body is damaging to say the least, but don't listen to me, you know best, right?
ReplyI don't really know best, I just don't really care much, which is bad, I know.
Reply6'2" and 139lbs? That's seriously underweight. Go check yourself into a weight-gain clinic!
Reply10,000 calories and 139lbs. you must have a very happy tapeworm!
ReplyA little bit of Real coke is better than a lot of Diet Coke that is full of artificial sweeteners,(one of which turns to FORMALDEHYDE in the stomach.) A little sugar goes a long way. Too much can cause problems. See above.
Replyi used to drink c2 coke (half sugar half splenda) when i just had to have a soda. it tasted exactly like regular coke. then that awful coke zero came out and c2 was discontinued. now i might have soda every other month.
ReplyWhy does the Coca-Cola company need 7.5-ounce, 90-calorie cans of its flagship product? 8-ounce, 100-calorie cans of Coca-Cola have been readily available to the public since 2006!
