Fox NFL and Burger King Make Jessica Simpson Fat Jokes

Jessica Simpson is yet again the butt of fat jokes, this time at the hand of Fox NFL and Burger King. During a recent pre-game show, an animated skit was aired that featured cartoon versions of Dallas Cowboy players and plenty of "boy is Jessica fat" jokes.
"Man, I still can't believe Tony (Romo) dated Jessica Simpson, even after she blew up bigger than Flozell Adams!" says the cartoon-version of running back Marion Barber. While tight end Jason Witten jokes, "Unlike Tony, at least Jessica comes up big when it counts!"
Even head coach Wade Phillips puts his two cents in. "Say Tony, is Jessica around? We could use a defensive tackle!" Har har.
A lot of people are saying the ad went too far. And though the purpose of this post isn't to defend Jessica Simpson's honor, the whole thing really was in poor taste.
What's interesting to me, though, is that no one is pointing out the irony here: Burger King is sponsoring a video of people making fat jokes. Burger King. Home of the Angry Triple Whopper (1360 calories, 91 grams of fat) and the BK Quad Stacker (1010 calories, 70 grams of fat). It's the ultimate mixed message: Eat our food! But don't eat too much or we'll ridicule you on national TV.
If that wasn't bad enough, they're picking on a woman who -- weight gain or not, because honestly I don't keep track -- is still smaller than the average American woman. What a great message to send during what is often a weekly family event.
Fox NFL has since apologized for the video, saying, "Upon reflection, our poor attempt at humor was insensitive and we deeply apologize to anyone who might have been offended."
What did you think about the skit?
I didn't see the skit, but I'm sick of people calling Jessica Simpson "fat". She may be curvier now than she was when she was doing Dukes of Hazzard, but she's still a normal weight. And yeah, it's pretty hilarious that BK was sponsoring the ad, considering they pretty much endorse obesity in all forms.
ReplyHmm, I duno, jessica is pushing the definition of curvy. Natalie Horler of Cascada is curvy, Jessica is chunky. But still not fat.
Maybe my definition of fat is getting messed up because of the average weight of people but still.
As for this skit... if it was ACTUALLY funny it would have been passable, but was it was so F**KING LAME. My little cousin can come up with better jokes than these clowns. Are we sure BK just sponsored this? Looks like they gave their burger flippers some extra side cash to write this trash.
ReplyShe's not chunky; she's just not blessed with height, like me. Us shorties tend to look a little thicker than if we had the same body fat as a taller person. So lay off.
Reply"She's not chunky; she's just not blessed with height"
>> Well then that's EXACTLY what's making her look chunky. Just because she lacks height doesn't mean I'll give her a pass! This is a dictatorship, it's not even up for debate. You want democracy? Goto Iraq. ;)
But really... Natalie Horler, go check her out. So curvacious.
ReplyI saw all the coverage of this & was disgusted by it! As a woman, I am tired of this crap. I certainly don't see much of this directed towards men, not that I would want that, but there are plenty of hefty famous men out there.
Also, Jessica is NOT fat or anywhere near close to it. She looks great!
I think Fox & all those players should apologize directly to Jessica including Romo. They need to make a public apology directly to her along with BK. How hypocritical!
ReplyIn fairness to Burger King, everything I've read about it indicates they had nothing to do with the segment. Sponsoring it is more like buying a commercial, it doesn't mean they have any input or preview of the content.
Replyshouldn't flozel adams be insulted as well as jessica simpson. and actually jessica should be flattered because the cartoon stated she can play football better than the loser cowboys. tony homo , maryann barber and jason dimwit.
ReplyGood point deb. The fox sports is embarrassed as to how badly the cowboys play and since jessica is not around this season to use as their scapegoat they had to bring her name up again to deflect from negative way they play and tony romo forgetting which quarter of the game they were in. how embarrassing so they tried to cover it up is what i heard. They are truly pathetic.
ReplyI think this commercial is extremely inappropriate. There again is another example how warped our media is in regards to women and their bodies. It is a terrible message to send out to our young girls.
ReplyDiet-blog, please refrain from using the F word. This is a family oriented website and words that are just as bad as racial slurs should not be a part of what goes on here.
ReplyThis is absolutely ridiculous and I agree, completely ironic. I don't understand number one, why people won't leave Jessica Simpson alone. And number two, I don't understand how Burger King has any room at all to make a campaign like this. It's disturbing and it's a horrible message to send to younger girls. This is a huge body image problem within the media.
