Get OFF the Couch and Start Exercising!

Do you sit for hours vegetating in front of the television?

No doubt, T.V. is an addictive pass-time for many, and I could preach all day telling them to get to the gym--but some would take absolutely no heed!

So, let's compromise here...

How are you with multitasking?

Can you see yourself using your T.V. viewing time as a distraction tool for getting in shape?

It's fact that most people simply aren't getting enough exercise. So, if you're sitting around watching T.V. for hours on end, my compromise is to combine the two.

If you want to watch every episode ever made of Seinfeld, you better dust down your workout gear! Think of it, running for 30 minutes staring at a wall would be tough for most people, but by watching T.V. at the same time is might just be do-able!

Your new mantra could be this: "I won't watch T.V. unless I'm doing something fitness related."

If you're not into T.V. watching, perhaps listening to a narrated book, or a podcast would be a good idea.

Here are a few suggestions:

  • If you're fortunate enough to have an elliptical trainer, or a stationary bike use it through the first half of the program.
  • Do mini bursts of cardio on an aerobic step for the length of one commercial break.
  • Grab some free weights or a resistance band and work on toning up your arms.
  • Do a few pushups against the wall or the back of your couch.
  • Chair squats are also great--try doing them for the length of one commercial.
  • Do some Pilates stretches as the credits roll to cool down.

So, do you have a distraction tool to take your mind off the monotony of exercise? Share your ideas with us!

I have written many a post about using time in front of the TV to do some exercise or stretching! I also encourage people to do things at every commercial break too! This is great for people short of time. Studies show that you can break up your workouts & still get the benefit! Upping the intensity with these short bursts is a given.

Cardio is draining to me so I listen to music & put something distracting on the TV at the gym too. Weights, no prob, I love them!

I do stuff in commercials pretty much whenever I watch TV. A 3 minute commercial is pretty much perfect for hammering out a set of squats, pushups, lunges, dips (using couch or coffee table), etc.

You have this one life to live and you're going to spend ANY of it sitting in front of this glowing box, staring vacantly at it while the real world around you passes you by? No thanks. Television is for idiots.

What if we're all plugged into the Matrix and none of it matters? Think about that, Mr. Muscles.

Oh not one of the anti-television zealots preaching from his high horse. It makes sense that most of you are exercise nuts also, just another reason you're so much better than all the fat, lazy, stupid people who dare turn on a tv.

I completely agree with your post Melanie, and I have already seen most gym's having TVs attached to their treadmills and stair-steppers.

Ok, what if I've already done my workout and vegetate for 3 hours in front of the boob-tube afterward? Am I going to get a lecture from the busybodies?

Unacceptable, entertainment is a crutch for fat, weak, miserabl losers. While you watched that Matlock rerun yesterday I burned 2,000 calories. Not becoming completely obsessed with exercise is for losers, so throw out your TV already fatty, kiss movies and ballgames and really anything that doesn't involve sweating goodbye.

I exercise for maybe 5 hours a week. Is that an obsession?

I exercise for 11 to 14 hours a week. And frankly don't care if it's an obsession. :D Of course, I don't really care if someone else spends every minute of that watching TV, either.

You should care. You should care for the same reason you should care if someone is smoking crack. Television destroys human potential and consumes precious time. Thinking of all of the billions of wasted hours people have spent sitting in front of the idiot box when they could have been interacting with each other, or doing something productive and meaningful for society makes me cringe and weep for the future.

You think that makes you superior to those of us who only do 5 hours a week? You probably aren't any fitter then us, doing your miles and miles of aerobics.

Who said superior? I said I don't CARE what anyone who's not me does. It makes no difference to me.

And I don't care who's fitter by any arbitrary definition. I care who I beat or who beats me in marathons. And whether I enjoy my free time -- and do what I enjoy. ;)

Even if I was fitter, what does that matter? That's just one thing someone might choose to pursue. They might choose to pursue a different avenue of personal gratification, and none is better or worse than another.

I also exercise about 5 hours a week. But according to some, you have to exercise 20 hours a week!

I watch TV while I work out on my elliptical...it's great; I get to watch Martha Stewart and Rachael Ray and not feel guilty about watching too much TV.

Um or you could just get cancel your cable/digital service provider. You don't miss it after a short while because you find other ways of filling your time. If you really miss your cable you can rent the dvd episodes of your favorite tv shows or watch them online. You can also get all your news online.
Since I cancelled my cable service I am reading more and studying more for my university courses. Im also more physically active. Last night I was bored at home so my boyfriend and I went wall climbing for 3 hrs! The old Lana would never have done that with tv enticing her.

Another intersting thing to note is that studies have acctually shown you have more brain activity while you are sleeping than watching television. You burn more calories while you are sleeping than watching television. Even reading burns more calories than watching television.
