Eating Sugar in Childhood Might Make You a Raging Adult

I didn't eat a lot candy growing up. All my Halloween chocolate ended up in the freezer, and then in cookies many months later. It was traumatic.

But, that might have been a good thing. Some experts now believe too many sweets as a kid might make you a more aggressive adult.

I don't know. I'm pretty much sugar-free now, but if someone cuts me off in traffic, it's on!

Reporting in The British Journal of Psychiatry, researchers examined 17,500 people, and found 69% of participants who were violent at 34 years old ate sweets and chocolate every day as kids.

In contrast, 42% of people who were non-violent at 34 had sweets at the same frequency, and this held true even when factors like behavior of parents, education and where participants lived, was considered.

Scientists say more studies are needed, but artificial food additives could be the cause. Many parent groups already rail about their link to things like ADHD.

So, next time I punch a hole in the wall, I'll tell my landlord the Snickers made me do it!

Perhaps a violent disposition predisposes one to eating lots of sugar.

As we know violence-prone, rage-filled types don't populate the bodybuilding circuit!

I also did not eat a lot of sugar growing up. My dad was a true sugar Nazi...he rationed out all our Halloween candy and gave us 3 pieces in our lunch per day. I think I was the only kid at school still eating Halloween candy in December, but whatever. I don't consider myself an angry person, but I do get really annoyed at people who do stupid things like trying to illegally pass me on the highway or hold up the line at the grocery store by trying to use expired coupons.

On another note, how do they define "aggressive" people? One man's aggressive could be another man's assertive; you have to really define your parameters on this one.

I also had my sugar intake severely regulated growing up - and I'm very calm person. I only fly into violent rages when I need to.

Sugar has no effect on your aggression as you get older. You might have other problems due to all the sugar intake but nothing that proves that sugar makes you a violent person

haha that's funny to think that all the grumpy adults are only mean because of how much candy they ate, but I'll believe it! Since I'm still considered a young adult I guess I need to pay attention to how much sweets I eat, or I might be the next Scrooge!
