Nutrient Found in Broccoli Protects Your Heart

When I was a kid, I'd only eat the tops of the broccoli. My parents thought I was little off.

But I don't do that anymore. I eat the whole thing. In fact, I eat broccoli 3 or 4 times a week.

And lucky for me, scientists think they've pinpointed why broccoli is so good for your heart.

Now, there's nothing magical about broccoli or any other fruits and vegetables. It comes down to nutrients. In this case, researchers claim sulforaphane, found in broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower, protects arteries.

In the study, appearing in the journal Arteriosclerosis Thrombosis and Vascular Biology, experts found sections of arteries exposed to sulforaphane activated a protein called Nrf2, which prevents inflammation and disease.

Most times I end up steaming broccoli and dipping it into organic ketchup. I know it's a little gross, but it's quick and easy. How do you eat your broccoli?

I eat a lot of broccoli. Stir fry is always good BUT I am like the article, if I am wanting to spend less time cooking or making a mess, I microwave & use mustard on my broccoli.. I have a variety of healthy flavored mustards in the house that I use on veggies, chicken, turkey, in tuna fish & more. I also use Mrs. Dash or another seasoning on the veggies too.

I absolutely loooove broccoli! It's one of the foods I can always eat and never get tired of. I eat it at least 6 times a week, if not more. :)
Not sure if that's such a good thing since it gives you quite a bit of gas if you eat too much...

Around here, its hard to find broccoli with substantial/meaty stems/trunks. Its like they are breed and grown for full crowns and wimpy stems/trunks. Not that i mind the crown portion, but, as a kid i ate a ton of brocolli stems.

I like it raw dipped in hummus or steamed and topped with some nutritional yeast. Makes it taste cheesy!

I like it simply steamed - tempura is nice too - but not the best for you ...

I love broccoli! I eat mine raw, dipped in salsa mixed with nonfat yogurt. It makes a really yummy dip. My husband likes to eat just the stalks of broccoli dipped in ranch dressing. Weird, but since it's the only veggie he eats, I don't complain.

I love broccoli and tend to put it in Asian style stir frys that I cook with Oyster sauce. Yum, I might cook that tonight.

I eat broccoli for lunch everyday. I buy the frozen bags, throw in a bowl with a lid in microwave for 7 minutes with 1 tblspn water, throw in some tabisco sauce, low fat, high nutrient lunch! Yummy

Remember that steaming vegetables is the best way to prepare them, steaming holds all the nutrients in the vegetable. Boiling your vegetables removes all the important nutrients that you need and disburses them into the water, the same water that you pour down the drain. Always staying informed about how you get the best from your veggies and the benefits that they have to offer is crucial to a healthy lifestyle, there is definite truth to "you are what you eat".

"Damn you, and damn the broccoli!"
