British Doctors Call for Total Advertising Ban on Booze

Crack open a magazine from the 1960s or 1970s and you'll find an abundance of cigarettes ads. It's almost startling, like a creepy trip back in time.

But today you'd be hard-pressed to find a single advertisement. It's all part of an effort to keep people and kids from having a puff.

And now the U.K. is eyeing similar action against alcohol. A total ban on advertising, coupled with a tax on drinks higher than the inflation rate.

The British Medical Association has pitched the idea, which calls for the nixing of the industry's $1.3 billion annual marketing budget, and the taxation of alcoholic drinks. Health experts feel the alcohol culture is running amuck in Britain.

It's scary. The BMA says between 1992 and 2006, household spending on alcohol increased 81%, with more young people engaging in binge drinking.

But, I think a ban will do booze makers a favor. People are still going to drink, so you've just removed the expense of having to market it.

Now beer is near and dear to my heart! But I know little of the U.K. drinking culture.

On principle I am against any "tax" or advertising ban on a legal product.

Drinking in moderation can still be healthy but of course in excess drinking is very unhealthy.

John... Now if people would realize that that same principle applies to ANY food.

I can't see any advantages with alcohol. Calories, hangover and you can't workout. I think the UK is doing the right thing.

You do realize some of us drink in moderation. Not everyone has to get wiped out every night.

I personally have a drink most nights to help me unwind, but I don't binge drink or anything like that. My husband likes his beer and we'll probably still buy it even if they decide to raise the taxes on it. The beer ads don't really influence us to buy it, but without beer ads, people won't choose good beer anymore; they'll just go for whatever's cheapest. I can see sales of Milwaukee's Best and Natty Light skyrocketing in the near future.

Where I worked, we gave up trying to sell it and our manager just dumped it down the drain.

Talk about a double standard. In the states it's impossible not to see a commercial about either having a bigger or harder "wee wee". Most of the commercials these days are about some drug.

They seem to never run out of stupid ideas in Europe.

BTW, people haven't stopped smoking because of less ads.
