Drinkers More Likely to Exercise Than Non-Drinkers

If you're hung over, the last thing you feel like doing is taking a hike or going to the gym. All you want is the cool embrace of the side of the toilet bowl!

So, it's pretty surprising to hear people who do a lot of drinking actually exercise more than abstainers.

Maybe guilt is the motivator--you feel like you're making it up to your liver by sweating the booze out in a high-intensity spin class.

A telephone survey of Americans found drinking was linked to a 10% greater likelihood of engaging in vigorous physical activity. The results, published in the American Journal of Health Promotion, show men and women who drink exercised 7.2 minutes more each week, compared to non-drinkers.

But slow down! That mug of beer isn't a sports-drink. Experts warn the risks of heavy drinking outweigh the benefits of exercise, i.e. things like cirrhosis of the liver.

So, have you ever had a wild night of partying, woke the next day feeling lousy, but somehow managed to drag yourself to the gym? I have!

Um, its because we feel like drinking after exercising, not the other way around. Try googling Hash House Harriers.

I think this actually just says something about the personality of people who exercise or of people who drink - that they tend to be similar. A social person who is likely to go out and drink with friends is also likely to be the kind of person to exercise. Someone who is more of a recluse is less likely to engage in either activity.

believe it or not, people with weight problems are recluses.

*not recluses

I didn't make a sweeping statement about all people who do or do not exercise - I just pointed out that it might be indicative of a trend.

Without being able to see the actual data and statistics behind this study, I'm a bit skeptical about the results. I would imagine the percentage of people who actually abstain from drinking alcohol is a fairly small percentage of the population, making it difficult to actually get a representative sample. In any case, such a study really is quite pointless and not helpful to anyone. I doubt a non-drinker who starts drinking is suddenly going to exercise more. We need to stop wasting money on studies like this.

"Alcohol users not only exercised more than abstainers, but the differential actually increased with more drinking."

I think they should be a little more specific. My experience was that when I drank, I did not exercise. I was a problem drinker (now reformed). I knew a lot of problem drinkers, and most of them exercised only when they were trying to curtail their drinking and get back to healthful habits. This usually did not last long. So for a "study" like this, I think they need to be a lot more specific about the number of drinks being consumed. I agree with previous posters that this might apply to people who work out at the gym and then head over to a social gathering, but it's hard for me to believe that someone who takes exercise seriously would drink much.

I don't drink & I have been exercising for years... Not sure what I think about this study. I think in a few years they will say something different.

There's something to be said for the benefits of a whiskey every now and then - but that's maybe a guy thing.

I don't drink alcohol either and exercise regularly. Not as much as Jody though! My hubbie on the other hand drinks every night and does not exercise. So, this study didn't ring true for me.

Men need their booze. Don't take it away from us. It's all we got.

E.L. is right.. money wasted on a study that has this kind of useless information is crazy. Alot of people drink and alot of people don't. Many people exercise, eat right and drink...there can be so many variables to this also...crazy!

If you look at the study a little more carefully, they say that people who drink 1-2 drinks a day are the ones that exercise more. I think it's a lifestyle thing...people who exercise probably look at their daily glass of wine as sort of a little reward for working out. I personally work out probably 2 hours a day most days of the week and I do drink one alcoholic drink per day. It's how I like to unwind and relax. I would think that people who drink MORE than 2 alcoholic drinks a day probably aren't the ones doing the exercise because I personally wouldn't be able to drag my ass out of bed in the morning to work out if I drank that much the night before.

Well, people who drink usually ends up eating more junk when they're hangover, so I guess the extra training just evens it up.

Well, anything too much is not good right?
Too much eating, too much drinking, too much smoking?
