"DASH" Diet May Keep Kidney Stones Away
I heard passing a kidney stone is like pushing a football through a garden hose. That'll certainly put a damper on your weekend!
So, if that doesn't sound like fun, you might want to try the DASH diet--short for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension.
Researchers claim "DASH-like" diets could cut the risk of kidney stones by 40 to 45 percent.
But, the DASH diet isn't exactly "American Food." It's plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and a little low-fat dairy, lean meat and fish message might be a problem. Where are all the McRibs, Double Stuf Oreos, and Snickers?
Reporting in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, data revealed of the 242,000 people studied, those eating a DASH diet had a lower risk of stones, even when considering body weight, blood pressure and fluid intake.
To me, DASH sounds like another word for a typical low-fat diet, and we've seen how well they've worked!
Are any of you on a DASH diet?

LOL. My first thought when reading the title was. "I love Mrs. Dash!"... but I quickly realized that you were talking about the seasoning.
ReplyI meant: "weren't talking about the seasoning". oops
ReplyI had mild hypertension that wouldn't go away with exercise. I then tried to cut my sodium content along with my exercise regimen but my BP still wouldn't budge.
I started to research ways to lower my BP and found out about the DASH diet. AFter studying it for a while, I decided to incorporate a 'modified' dash diet where I eat the same servings of fruits & veggies, but eat a lot more lean meats and less grains than was recommended in the diet. After one week of eating this way, my BP shot down to normal levels.
When considering what the average diet is like, I'm not surprised the DASH diet lowers kidney stone risk.
ReplyI can't eat that many vegetables every day. I try, but it's too hard. Leave me alone with my Baconator!
ReplyThe DASH diet was developed by the NHLBI for people with high blood pressure. It has been proven in many studies to lower blood pressure, as well as other conditions like kidney stones.
It is a good diet and I wish it was more mainstream and had greater awareness. It has the great basics of: low salt and saturated fats, and lots of fruit & veg and wholegrains.
The NHLBI website has a lot of info on the diet including recipes and how to get started with the diet. If you have high blood pressure or are at risk of it, or just want a healthy eating diet to follow have a loook at the DASH diet.:

ReplyI always thought the DASH diet was more low sodium than low fat, but I suppose it's probably both. My mom went on the DASH diet when she was diagnosed with Meniere's disease. It really helped her symptoms, but she didn't stick with it for long because she said it was too boring. I suppose if you're eating a diet that's low in sodium, it would definitely help with kidney stones.
ReplySpectra,
While it does have low sodium, I think the thing that makes the DASH diet so effective is its very high potassium content. It also contains an abundance of magnesium, calcium and fiber.
