Do You Try New Comfort Foods When Times Are Tough?

I'm a professional blogger, so I'm a tiny apartment and broken down Honda Civic away from homeless--especially now that the economy is a disaster.

Lately, I've turned to a comfort food or two. A few cups of coffee, eel sushi and loaves of semolina bread. Sorry, it makes me feel better!

Those are my old standbys. But, some researchers claim people are more tempted to try new stuff during tough times--weird stuff too.

In the study, appearing in the Journal of Consumer Research, experts say a state of upheaval changes peoples choices. In this case, people passed up good old Lay's potato chips, and switched to fancy "camembert-and-plum crisps."

This could be because people are already in a state of flux, maybe a little disoriented, so the stage is set to try something unfamiliar and new. Makes sense to me, when you're bummed you'll try anything to pep you up.

So, when the "chips" are down and you're feeling low, what comfort food seduces you?

Pasta with tons of Parmesan cheese! I am still working off a giant bowl I had two days ago. The worst thing about it, is that I am not supposed to eat wheat! Its such a comfort food from my childhood.

Pasta with loads of cheese and sauce are the ultimate comfort food for me too. It's why I'm avoiding it altogether right now.

Guacamole and pretzels. The only downside of guacamole is that you have to plan ahead. When you buy avocados from the store, they usually need to sit a day or two before they are ready.

Salad...but with Ken's Italian Dressing. Also, gotta have chedder cheese in there.

Soup. I put leftover meat and veggies in a pot and fill it with more veggies, broth, and sometimes pasta.

Spaghetti with chopped bacon, tomatoes, and green onions mixed with the noodles. Brown hamburger and add that to some Prego tomato sauce. Mmmmmmm

Nah, I haven't tried any new comfort foods. I think a lot of people are "upgrading" their old standbys because it's an affordable luxury. I mean, if you can't afford to go out to eat, why not at least buy the GOOD food at the store? I will say that I have refused to give up my good coffee. I will never buy Folgers or Maxwell House...I'm stuck on my Berres Brothers whole bean. Even if it does cost $8 a pound, lol.

That's cheating... Comfort food = high carbs!

The only comfort food I reach for is chocolate. I go for dark fruit and nut, and if I really need comfort I can finish a 200gram block in one go!

Velveeta Shells and Cheese is my comfort food of choice, creamed potatoes on a rare occasion and meatloaf from time to time. I did a good job today though (4 days after a partial hysterectomy) and bypassed the Velveeta shells and cheese for a healthier version of homemade mac and cheese.
