Heavy Boozing Raises Risk of All Sorts of Cancer
Bar hopping is fun. I know, I just did some in New York City this weekend. But, if you make a habit out of it, you've got problems. And I'm not talking about hangovers and coyote ugly!
Regular heavy drinking increases the risk of developing different types of cancer, such as esophageal, stomach, colon, liver, pancreatic, lung and prostate cancer. Wow!
The list is long, but the results of the study, published in the journal Cancer Detection and Prevention, vary from cancer to cancer, and type of alcohol. For heavy beer and liquor the cancer link was stronger than moderate intake of wine.
Cancers most affected by lots of drinking were esophageal cancer, with a sevenfold higher risk, 80% for colon cancer, and 50% for lung cancer.
Alcohol is a toughie for me--I'm young, single and awkward--so it helps in social situations. But, I'm also health savvy, it's a puzzling middle ground.
What about you? How do you balance booze and health?

Consumption of three or more alcoholic drinks per day is clearly associated with a higher risk of breast cancer in women. Even one or two drinks daily may slightly increase the risk. Folic acid supplementation might mitigate the risk. If you are a woman and breast cancer runs in your family, strongly consider abstinence.
ReplyI'm a woman and cancer doesn't run in my family at all. Nobody in my family has ever had it on either side, but I still plan on regularly getting checked for it. I drink one alcoholic drink per day (two if it's a really bad day, LOL); usually vodka mixed with seltzer or something. I eat an otherwise extremely healthy diet with lots of fiber, lots of antioxidants, and lots of vitamins and minerals. I figure, I eat healthy about 85-90% of the time and life's too short to completely deprive myself of something I like.
My husband does drink more than he probably should and he doesn't eat a great diet...I worry about him getting diverticulitis or colon cancer in the future if he doesn't improve his diet at some point.
ReplyI usually drink a glass of Cabernet/Merlot/Zinfandel, anything that's a dark red wine. Since it works for the French, It works for me. Occasionally if I'm feeling a bit stressed I'll hit 2-3 shots of Jack.
ReplyI am just not a drinker.. never have been, even in college. I guess alcohol played no place in my home growing up so I never really saw it so...
Now, unless I am in Hawaii enjoying R&R with one of those umbrella drinks worth a billion calories, I just don't have the desire to drink.
For me, I rather have a big ole cookie for the calories. I just don't care for the taste of alcohol, beer or wine.....
Now, I do have an brother-in-law that is an alcoholic & he has some big ole health issues & is 10 years youngest than me!
ReplyIf your drinking is at the point increasing your risk for cancer, doesnt that mean you have other more urgent issues. Like, why are you drinking so much?
ReplyAlso the experts say that drink dark red wines have heart benefits, as the wine molecules help clear away the platelets that cause blockages in arteries.
ReplyI heavily booze on Sundays, so frak it.
ReplyTip: Alcohol not only contains high calories, it lowers your metabolism causing you to burn fewer calories.
