Denny's Sued For High Salt Content

Denny's is kind of a joke. Its open 24-7, so it's the cliché late night hangout for drunks, burnouts and stoners looking to sober up.

It's greasy, sinful comfort food. No frills. Just all the stuff that will kill: bacon, sausage, syrup, fried potatoes, butter and salt--lots of salt!

And, its because of the excessive salt content in Denny's food, that one activist group has filed suit against the restaurant chain.

The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), which promotes nutrition and food safety, claim some of Denny's meals contain more than 5,000 milligrams of salt. They insist people should consume no more that 1,500 milligrams.

The CSPI says Denny's "Meat Lover's Scramble" has 379% of the advised daily limit of salt. It's made with two eggs, chopped bacon, diced ham, crumbled sausage, cheese, two bacon strips, two sausages, hash browns and two pancakes.

If I ate that, I would drop dead right on the spot. The CSPI's lawsuit wants Denny's to disclose the high salt content on their menus.

Listen, is someone who craves the greasy griddle of Denny's REALLY worried about salt?

Obviously if you're eating all that processed meat, you're getting way too much salt. I'm sure there's more than your daily allowance in a meat lovers pizza too. Just drink a lot of water with it.

I wouldn't list the CSPI and expect much respect for the article; not that that amount of salt in a single meal is a good thing, but after the CSPI supported trans fat in place of saturated fat in (I believe) the seventies and eighties, I don't think they can really be trusted to get anything right.

CSPI: Center For Science thats Positively Idiotic.

Some people are forgetting that the body DOES need salt for various functions. I fault Denny's here because they aren't using a healthy salt like Celtic Sea Salt, but once you are using a healthy salt, there's no reason to restrict it.

Salt is salt. There's no magic form of it.

It's not bad for you unless you have high blood pressure.

Also, there's nothing wrong with that particular Denny's meal as long as you're fit and aren't overeating in general. If you're a bodybuilder and you just arrived in town after a 12 hour flight, it might be a great choice. Lots of healthy fat and protein. (Otherwise it's probably too much food for a meal, but there's nothing wrong with the parts, only the total amount.)

Well, salt isn't just salt. White table salt is treated with chemicals (aluminum being the most concerning), stripped of all the trace minerals, and cooked at high temperatures.

Show me a study linking increased salt intake to higher all-cause mortality.

I'm guessing that most people that are actually worried about salt aren't going to be eating at Denny's. Unless you have blood pressure or kidney problems, there's not really a reason to severely restrict your sodium intake...just be sure to drink plenty of water if you eat something high in salt to help flush it out. People need to take some personal responsibility...all these stupid lawsuits are kind of driving me nuts.

I agree with the above! If you are eating at Denny's & ordering some of that stuff anyway & NOT the egg white scramble then.... come on, you know this stuff is loaded!

Wait... you mean these Denny's menu items aren't the pillar of good healthy eating that we always thought they were? WHAT A RIP OFF! Let's sue somebody. Man, I'm going to Waffle House.

Hilarious, Nelson! I couldn't agree with you more. Anyone with common sense knows that everything should be done in moderation. So we eat a greasy, salty meal once in a while - ENJOY! I'm all for government oversight on some things, but p-lease. Don't even try to controly my food intake!

Brenda, In a rather perverse way the government does control your food intake. At great cost, the Gov't subsidizes the corn industry thereby allowing cheap (and harmful) HFCS to flood the market. It is used in all packaged foods, sometimes serval times in the same reciepe. The corn (a very unhealthy crop to eat) industry is as powerful as oil and tobacco once was.
Also cental calif is a rather poor location to produce milk without the use of growth hormones and concrete barns to shelter the cows entire life for the hot sun, YET most of our milk and cheese used in package foods come from this dreadful supply. Your food choices have long been decided for you.

Since Denny's doesn't use 'CLEAN' foods like grass fed beef or diary, I would only then agree that the bacon and sausage will kill you but if you say it as a fact that beef and diary are high in Fat and thats bad, then I strongly disagree. Grains are the killers. Fear the Bread NOT the Butter.

Yup, carbs are the real killer. Along with being 100% sedentary. Oh and stress is the ultimate early killer.

I honestly don't know if you can just sue a food outfit because the food is unhealthy. It's not a good thing and you are putting your customers at a bad place, but you aren't really breaking any laws.

If Denny's had claimed so and so, but did differently then you'd have a case. It just so happens that it was Denny's, if you take a look at a lot of restaurant menu's nutritional values, you'd be surprised at the skyrocketing amounts of salt and sugar. Even places like Starbucks and family restaurants are guilty of this.

wow- this is as bad as that old bat who sued McDonalds years ago because she spilled her coffee in her lap and "gasp", it burned her. Lawsuits like these are what is destroying this country.
